Amber IndiaWonderful placeWe were promptly seated without waiting (we had dinner early to avoid the dinner rush: 6:30pm) and was seated by the window as requested. Perfect place except a little awkward since the sofa seat extends to the next table- a little too close for comfort. But we kept more private and lowered our voices. The ambience was dark inside and we were thankful for the bright lighting from the outdoor sky at 6:30pm. Server was ver attentive and our water was promptly refilled. Food was great(we used Dine About Town) and enjoyed our 3-course menu of lamb and sea bass. Servers were a little slow since we didnt have a fork by first course and had no spoon by the third. Drinks had too much alcohol for happy hour. The food is outstanding, five stars. The servicepeople are friendly and knowledgeable (though occasionally not as attentive as some of us might prefer when things have not yet arrived, and too attentive once things have). Beautiful atmosphere, excellent cocktail list and wine list, and spacious airy room easily suited to lunch and dinner meetings and to large groups. Far and away one of the best Indian restaurants in town, and one of the best overall restaurants in that location. The chicken dish was good , the Fish was superb. We enjoyed some of the other dishes also such as the salad, vegetarian dumplings and the lentils. One of the desserts we ordered was Gulab Jamun Usually an order of Gulab Jamuns has two. The food was really good: flavorful, good use of spices, and great sauces. The service was attentive. The design of the place is very elegant, modern. We really had a good time. My only complaint is that the portions could be a little bigger.
By the way, we went during Dine About Town. The special menu looked great and seemed like a great bargain, however, the server told us that the portions were smaller than the usual. It's near her work and there's lots of parking at the nearby Yerba Buena Garage. We chose the buffet, and were delighted. The arugula salad was crisp and the butter chicken was to die for. For instance, we told our server that we wanted wine and she did not return for over 15 minutes. We had to hail another server to track her down and send her back to us. It was my first time, so kind of a risk, but one worth taking. Our food was readily delivered and we were able to enjoy it in our little corner of the restaurant together. The waitress was professional and prompt. It's a brief walk just north of the north building. I dined with a friend who is very familiar with Indian food who loved the excellent flavors as I did though described the dishes as non-traditional. I found the black lentil dahl very tasty as was the eggplant main dish. We shared the cauliflower appetizer which had such a wonderful sauce that we kept the dish until we had the garlic naan to get the last of it. I had been there about four years ago and found it just as good. The menu includes mostly familiar Indian favorites but each is done with some extra touch or flair. In our group of six everyone was very happy with the appetizers, meals, and desserts. Special faves were the flash-fried crispy spinach (we ordered a second bowlful) and the mango brulee. The specialty drinks such as the Marquis de Mumbai were a big hit as well.
The service was disappointing, however. On our first visit it had been a bit slow but pleasant and accurate. Highly recommended.1/17/2013 12:00:00 AMConsistently good for dinnerI've been to Amber three times for dinner, and they have consistently delivered good service and fantastic food. The only thing I would caution against is the desserts. Also, don't be put off by the hostess as they deal with a lot of walk-up traffic and so they give ridiculous wait times (Hey, you're on Opentable, so you won't be doing that), so their not the friendliest when you walk in, but once you sit down, you'll find the servers attentive and efficient.
This is my go-to whenever I have out of town visitors who are craving some good Indian fare.
On the food side, everything from the palak paneer to the chicken tikka is exceptionally good. The dals are very tasty and they usually have a good masala fish special. Enjoy!
