  • "The food was terrific, but the prices were about 15% too high."

  • "We truly enjoyed our meal--our out-of-town guest plans to bring back co-workers this week for more! Each dish looked beautiful as it arrived, smelled so aromatic we couldn't wait to dive in, and tasted wonderful to boot. Note that dishes have "heat" in the Indian tradition, not the lack of spicing you'd expect in a 50s Midwestern diner! The restaurant was elegant and lovely, filled with people, but still perfect for us to enjoy dinner conversation while we ate. Our main waiter was especially gracious and helpful. Special favorites were the trout--done to perfection--and Mary's butter chicken. We also loved the Belgian chocolate molten cake and the mango brulee."

  • "Food definitely not as good as usual. Lamb shank was tough. Okra spices were too heavy. Disappointed because the restaurant is usually a favorite."

  • "Most Indian food is just a tomato base or a cream base (or a mix) with some spices. But not many spices. Amber packs a lot of flavor into their dishes."

  • "I had such high hopes for this place since we used to go to the Santana Row location quite often when we lived in the south bay. We went for lunch, the lunch buffet itself is delicious and spicy, with a nice variety and even though it's a tad overpriced it's in a nice location in a nice looking building. A $4 mango lassi filled to 3/4 of a cocktail glass however... is a bit much. The service?? HORRIBLE, from the 10 min we had to wait at the front desk for the host to finally get off the phone to sit us, to the incoherent conversation I had with the waiter. The bill came before we asked for it (huge pet peeve of mine) and the bathroom was beyond disgusting with smears on the stall walls."

  • "Excellent food in this vibrant and busy Indian restaurant convenient to Union Square."

  • "This restaurant did not disappoint. The menu was creative. There were the dishes you expect (tikka masala, butter chicken, palak chaat), and some new additions that were odd and enjoyable. There was a sprout side dish that was particularly curious. I'd go back for sure."

  • "I booked a table for 6, and we got the worst table in the whole restaurant. We were just beside the emergency exit. Service was good, and the place is really nice and romantic (if you get a normal table) I've been here before and this won't be my last. Food is just fantastic."

  • "We had a great experience from start to finish. The appetizer and the accompanying sauce was exceptional. The main course of shrimp and aloo gobi was even better. We loved the garlic naan. Truly excellent!"

  • "Amber India (SOMA San Francisco) is a family favorite restaurant of ours and our most recent dinner there was no exception. The Four Chile Rubbed Sea Bass was extraordinary."

  • "Stopped by for a quick lunch last week. Overall a very good buffet, with many solid and tasty choices. I love their butter chicken! Would definitely come here again when in the area."

  • "A trip to SanFrancisco for the annual Intersolar would be woefully incomplete for me without an evening (or two, or three...) at Amber. I've made this a tradition for the past 4 years. The food is incredible and our server was delightful and extremely attentive. This is a MUST DO on your SanFrancisco Bucket List!!!"

  • "This was a very enjoyable dining experience. Our server was very attentive and there when we needed her. The food is excellent and great for sharing at the table. I'm definitely going back!!!"

  • "Me and my friend showed up separately and were seated on different tables, when though the reservation was in my name. I think they had misplaced my reservation through open table. In the evenings they seem to more chaotic. I also thought that the servers were too "fake" friendly. The food is great, highly recommend it."

  • "Compared to my previous dinner experience at Amber the lunch buffet was slightly disappointing. What distinguishes Amber in my opinion is the imagination and skill the chefs display while blending Indian and non-Indian ingredients and recipes to invent delicious new dishes. That imagination and inventiveness was not visible at the lunch buffet - the fare consisted of old favorites such as butter chicken, spicy lamb curry, tandoori chicken - solid traditional Indian restaurant food, perhaps tastier than most other restaurants, but nothing to rave about, and definitely not good value at their above average prices. While I will definitely go back for dinner, I'll probably order off the menu if I ever go for lunch."

  • "All really good. We are From London. The tandoori sea bass, lamb rogan josh delicious. We asked for a vegetable dish and a particular naan that was not on the menu and they made it no questions asked. Clean plates and dishes left."

  • "horribly overpriced for food that barely shows the much-hyped flashes of complexity and precision....would not go again at these crazy prices"

  • "We went here for lunch, so I can't speak about their a la carte menu, but their lunch buffet is amazing. They have a ton of vegetarian options, and they have a good amount of meat options as well. Super great service, and a very nice ambience."

  • "Amber has excellent Indian food - as mild or spicy as you wish, and also superb service. In fact, it's the best Indian food I've found so far in SF. So don't come only for the super-lively bar scene, but to have an excellent meal. Its downtown location is very convenient to all of the museums in the Mission/3rd St area, and to local movie theaters and shopping."

  • "The wife and I went for dinner here after some shopping in the downtown area. We ordered calamari soup, lamb chops and methi chicken with a few naans. The food is delicious and portions are quite good. The staff are friendly and knowledgeable and helped us make our selection. Its a bit pricey (dinner for two came to about $100 with tips), but definitely worth it for foodies who love spins on Indian food. We plan to come back here with the entire family soon. One minor nit - there seemed to be no drink options for people who don't drink alcohol, which seemed strange since there are so many ways jal-jeera and lemonade can be mixed with other Indian flavors. The ambiance is great too. Seating is a bit tight, but this is the city after all."

  • "This place has a wonderful lunch buffet. Each dish is carefully prepared. Lots of Indians in the restaurant, which is a good sign, as they know Indian food."

  • "This was not my first time. Outstanding food just the tables are small and if you are ordering a few dishes to share it is hard to have enough room. Also it was pretty noisy. Would return again though"

  • "Met a friend over lunch on a weekday. Gave us a lovely corner table/booth by the window. Initially was not going to order the buffet, but it just made sense to as I wanted the butter chicken and it was on the buffet, and the buffet was less than ordering the item off the regular menu. Glad I did, everything was excellent, and was able to try a variety of things I may not normally have. And the butter chicken was outstanding, love that Naan comes on the table. We were very happy with our meal, our iced tea was refilled often, great service. I highly recommend for lunch, also nice for a date, romantic atmosphere at night."

  • "I dine out monthly with a friend and we always share everything. We participated in Dine About Town at Amber India and shared our two appetizers, entrees, a rice and a naan and two desserts so got to taste plenty. Everything was delicious but the two standout items were the duck kebab appetizer and the garlic naan. We also had a delicious Spanish wine that the sommelier recommended and it was delicious on it's own and complemented the food well. I will definitely return, it's a bit pricey so would be perfect for a business dinner when I can expense the meal :)"

  • "We arrived about 5-10 minutes prior to our 8pm reservation and a table was not ready for us. We went to the bar to purchase our wine while we waited. The server in the bar was lovely. When our table was ready, we had to cash out our wine bottle purchase at the bar before being seated (I always find that set-up inconvenient and clumsy - why not just transfer the wine purchased at the bar to the dining tab?). When we sat, our table was less than impressive in terms of location. The service took a healthy step down in quality and attentiveness. The food was good - the appetizers were way better than my main. The wine selection was nothing to write home about. The ambience was nothing to write home about. Everything was sort of average"

  • "Absolutely superb food, great waiter who didn't hesitate for one second before recommending the "best dish" in his opinion (sea bass), one of us had that, the other the duck vindaloo. Just superb, and an very eclectic wine list."

  • "me and my wife dined at this restaurant on Saturday night. we ordered butter chicken, bhindi do pyaza, lachha paratha, chilli thyme naan, tandoori naan, corn tikki...food was good to taste and nicely presented. portions were enough. being Saturday night, the restaurant was crowded and hence noisier than average. but overall, the ambience was good. service was okay. food is priced a bit higher but can understand that - location is a premium one, it is SFO after all, the restaurant is widely well-known and famous for its Indian food. given all these factors, i'd say that it was a really nice meal that we had. thumbs up!"

  • "Went here based on it getting the highest reviews of restaurants in the surrounding area. Ended up really paying off. We got right in with our table already waiting for us at the time of our reservation. Our server was fantastic and helpful in accommodating my friends' special diets. Food tasted great and came out very timely. All around very impressed. Will definitely go back. "

  • "It was busy and we were surprised how large it is but we got a large good table. The food is exceptionally good quality and not at all a curry experience like many typical Indian style restaurants. The calamari starter was awesome, the calamari was so tender and the sauce was superb. The chicken rezalla was excellent and around madras heat with a great smooth sauce. There was no sign of the usual floating ghee and the breads and rice were excellent too. We had a really nice bottle of Napa Sauv Blanc. My one negative is the price. With three starters and 3 mains - 3 breads and one rice plus wine and a tip is was $264 which is a lot for a curry. However, I would definitely go back as the food was delicious. Just save up first!"
