Diner Reviews
  • "Amber continues to be one of my favorite restaurants. The flavors explode off the plate, the service is always friendly, and attentive but not overbearing, and it's in a fun location that is totally convenient. Can't wait to go back."

  • "Amber India remains at the top of its game as (perhaps) the best Indian in SF. (I'd put Dosa and perhaps more less high concept places like Vik's Chaat House and Breads of India in East Bay alongside it.) The sauces are all incredibly flavorful and the chefs really treat their ingredients well. Food is memorable from top to bottom, including the small things like raita and the basmati rice. Wine list is really good as well. You pay a premium for all this, of course, but well worth it for special occasions."

  • "I only tasted a few dishes because I was dining alone, but each was very good. The deep fried spinach is an interesting twist on appetizers and was remarkably not greasy despite being deep fried. The samosas had well spiced interiors and the pastry was thin enough. The stars of the meal were the saag paneer and the eggplant entrée. The spinach was silky smooth, had great flavor, and was loaded with excellent paneer. The eggplant had a delicious tomato-ey sauce with a pleasant combination of spices and I think sliced almonds for crunch. I wish I had two stomachs so I could eat all the ordered food. I recommend skipping the 32 hour dal - it was very plain compared to the other dishes."

  • "I am actually shocked at all of the good reviews. We have eaten at several indian resturants all over the US abd UK and this resturant is ok at best. My husband, who is a Brit, asked me to score everything a 2 - but Amber did have twp redeeming qualities - and that was the atmosphere and the riata. Don't want to be a "hater" - but not worth money ... In our opinion one of the top 5 or 6 in cost and one of the bottom five in taste."

  • "Seemed like a tourist spot. Food ok, not great. Prices out of line (high) for quality and portion size. Was convenient to our show at Yerba Buena gardens but that was its main strength."

  • "Again no disappointments! The house butter chicken should be illegal it's that good. We were looking forward to returning here since our last visit to the city. IMO it maybe the best Indian food I've ever eaten. Excellent cocktail list as well that actually goes with the food. Don't pass on this place and worth seeking out for dinner. Decor is also very pleasing and service is on point."

  • "I've been wanting to try Amber India for some time and I finally got to go in. They had some traditional dishes but also served many dishes that I would not find at other local Indian restaurant. Case and point: Orange and Fig tandoori chicken. It was juicy and well seasoned. They also have great cocktail and wine menu. I would recommend it for someone who wants to try exploring different type of Indian food."

  • "The food was above expectation and outstanding. Great flavors and every dish was exceptional. Issues included poor service, manager asking us to hurry up at the end of the meal while we were seated after the reservations. Additionally once were we were seated, took us asking and 20 minutes for service to get drinks. Appetizers came out with the main courses. Expect higher service from such a highly recommended and commended restaurant. Overall satisfied with the food but service could have been much better."

  • "This restaurant came highly recommended and you can see why. Great food wonderful service. My wife is Indian and she raved about how great the meal was not to mention the atmosphere. Definitely try the fig and orange chicken tikka and the butter chicken you'll want to thank the chef"

  • "We went there in a group of 6. It was great as usual although a nearby conference had the restaurant fuller than I've ever seen it. On our second plates, the buffet line was back to the bathroom. We noticed that after about 15 minutes the line had pretty much cleared out as people got their initial servings and then the lime was normal. The buffet price seems to have edged up a couple of bucks but everyone still liked it. It is great for lunch time groups because there is no ordering time. And the food is clean, fresh and tasty."

  • "As a fan of high quality indian food I eat here each time I visit the City. Saag paneer is perfect. Butter chicken and their version of veggie korma (called something else) are sublime. I have eaten there 7 times in one month and never disappointed or bored."

  • "From the time we arrived for our reservation and were immediately shown to our table until dinner was over, it was a totally wonderful experience. Outstanding meal and attentive service."

  • "Three of our party of four found the food hot and spicy but good. The fourth asked our waiter to recommend a very mild dish, explaining that she cannot eat peppery food or hot spices, though she likes mild curry and saffron. She ordered the entrée the waiter recommended. When it arrived, it was so "pepper hot" she could not eat anything after the first bite. The waiter acted unconcerned. Will not go back. If you like hot food, this is a nice place. If not, not so much."

  • "Food at Amber is very up-market Indian (with the price to accompany it). Portions are large, so if you are eating alone, you will miss the ability to eat a mix of multiple dishes. Cocktails are also unique and prepared very well. The restaurant adds an additional 4% to each check for "San Francisco city-imposed employee costs". This is printed on the menu, so is not a surprise when the check is delivered, but I did not appreciate this. This is the cost of doing business and does not need to be exposed to clients."

  • "Really wonderful. The food was delicious and much better than most Indian restaurants I've been to previously. Also, our waiter was particularly excellent (I believe his name is Sagar) and I would definitely request to be seated in his section again as I've been to Amber before and his services surpassed our previous servers. Great restaurant!"

  • "Really excellent Indian food. Best Indian restaurant I've been to in ages."

  • "We were going for a business lunch and had heard that there was a buffet at lunch. Since this was not ideal for our meeting, we tried to call in advance to see if you could order off the menu. No one ever answered the phone, so we had to walk to the restaurant to ask, thankfully we were staying around the corner. We decided to go ahead anyway since they told us we could order from the menu. Once we got there, they kept pushing the buffet which we ended up doing because the lunch prices from the menu were outrageous. Unfortunately the buffet was disappointing not well maintained (e.g. butter chicken had lots of curry, but no chicken!). I don't think I would recommend the restaurant if their buffet is indicative of their food quality."

  • "The quality of the ingredients is excellent as is the variety offered. I have eaten there quite often and always enjoy my meal and the excellent service received. The wait staff is always knowledgeable and ready to assist with menu choices."

  • "I've looked for great Indian food that is authentic and doesn't compromise taste and spices. This is the only restaurant that I know of that does so. I do like that they try new things with old traditional dishes and the fact that they try meats like duck that aren't necessarily part of an Indian cuisine. I do wish that is weren't as pricey so I could visit more often :)"

  • "We came here for dinner during a conference break and were very disappointed from the very beginning. The hostess was too busy texting on her phone to greet us. We had arrived early so we asked if we could be accommodated early, being fully open to having to wait at the bar. After much confusion between the her and the second hostess, we were told we could be seated early but they "would need the table back in 90 minutes". I was dumbfounded by this I had to ask her to repeat herself. It just went on and on. Server was equally bad. Food was good, but not great. Price was very high. Service was abominable for a fast food joint, let alone a high end SF restaurant. The only great part was our busboy. He was delightful. Do not eat here!"

  • "Food was okay, but over-priced and inconsistent. The main dining room and bar are both attractive, but sadly we were seated in the atrium which is between the bathroom, kitchen, and restaurant entrance/stairs and isolated from main dining room--which is okay for bar service or possibly lunch--but not for a nice dinner. I appreciate that the restaurant is trying to create a fine dining experience but it is trying too hard. The food should take the lead and stand on it's own."

  • "I am not an expert on Indian food but I do like Indian food but we came here based on recommendations from a number of people. The lunch buffet is fantastic as has been stated by many before me. You really don't need more than the first run to get your money's worth but then it wouldn't be a buffet if you don't go up multiple times. The next time I go I will likely just go up once and leave more room for dessert. On the other hand you can also skip dinner as I did. And while they give you mimosas it is really just the essence of champagne so don't expect to get loaded on it. Still it is a wonderfully made mimosa. The service is excellent. They were always refilling the drinks and naan without us needing to ask."

  • "We loved the food, but it was a little too loud, trendy, and crowded for our mostly 60-something party. The service was not compromised by the crowding or pace, so I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone that does not mind these issues."

  • "Whenever I'm in San Francisco I make it a point to visit Amber, and it is always worthwhile. The food is delicious - I strongly recommend the chaat appetizer - and the service is warm, friendly, and prompt. Add to that a beautiful interior with rich colors and soft lights, and you have a win."
