A word from Amaya the Indian room
Joanne Kates (The Globe and Mail Restaurant Critic) writes…”Amaya, which opened recently in the (renovated) premises of the former Jov, is heaven-sent. The combination of silken service and excellent ingredients freshly cooked, with sensitive spicing, is seductive in the way that only the food of the subcontinent can be - rich, assertive, complex, exotic.” Just as the food avoids clichés, so does the setting. The 40-seat dining room is accented with subtle hints of India through stunning photography creating an inviting atmosphere that is casual and friendly yet elegant and sophisticated.Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Fabulous food, very authentic and I say this as a person of East Indian descent! Only downside is the location, I wouldn't be able to make it a regular haunt as it's a bit too far from the downtown core."

  • "Went to Amaya with high expectations. Extremely disappointed with the food quality, and service. Having travelled extensively and eaten the best Indian food available, I can guarantee you that the food is not authentic. I had ordered a tasting menu, but was surprised to see it served as a la carte. Plates were not changed, and tables were left dirty. If you're serving bottled water, it should not be served in an open, and dirty bottle. When the food arrived, it was very cold and had to send the food back only to wait 20 minutes. While waiting, the naans were not served and we were left eating beet root rice. While the waiter tried his best, this is not the place to go if you're looking for a pleasant Indian fine-dining experience."

  • "After the waiter suggested the tasting menu for the third time we felt it must be something special, it was!!!!! Absolutely delicious, would recommend for sure."

  • "My husband and I has dinner here on Thursday at 730 pm. Only about four other tables were occupied so it was fairly quiet. Our waiter was really nice and took his time explaining the menu to us (first time diners). He told us they had very recently updated/changed their menu. We had the cauliflower appetIzer, chicken vindaloo (not on the menu but the chef agreed to make it since it wasn't a busy night) and the lamp chops. Everything was very good but the cauliflower was excellent. The naan is quite big and one to share was enough. We both enjoyed our meal and will be back."

  • "We went to the India Room to celebrate a friend's birthday. The food was excellent and the staff were incredibly friendly and a pleasure to deal with!!! Highly recommended!!!!"

  • "We had a good dining experience but for Indian food it was way overpriced. We could have had bigger portions and same quality food for half the price at most Indian restaurants. Service was very good but not a very kid friendly place."

  • "Very limited choice for main menu, very different from one listed on the website ."

  • "This was my second time coming to this restaurant. My group and I fully enjoyed the dining experience. The food was outstanding, as in our group was a few that were skeptical about trying Indian food for the first time, but all thoroughly enjoyed it."

  • "Exceptional service and delicious food! Tables for 2 along back wall too close!!! Remove one or create a table for 4..."

  • "I have been here a few times in the past. The food was very good, and I looked forward to the next visit. This time I was not so impressed with the food. The menu had changed, and not for the better. However, it is still a very popular place to dine for the neighbourhood, though on this visit only two tables were occupied, including mine. However, it was a bitterly cold night, and might have something to do with it. I am ambivalent about another visit, but I might give it another try."

  • "This was our third time at Amaya and each time the food has been outstanding. The menu is creative and innovative, the aromas enticing. I recommend the Bolly Bellini cocktail - delightful! The service is efficient and attentive. This is the best Indian food we have eaten in Toronto."

  • "Took my wife here for Valentines and was pleasantly surprised! Ordered the set menu with 5 courses and each one was perfectly spiced. My only complaint was that a few of the portion sizes were a bit small. I will definitely be going back!"

  • "Once again we had an excellent meal at Amya. The appetizers were great and the lamb main course was wonderful. Full of rich flavours and generous portions.. The staff is friendly and helpful, and the nighttime ambience is warm and comfortable. All-in-all a very nice dining experience. Cheers."

  • "We were promptly greeted and seated upon arrival and attended too relatively quickly with an offer of water or beverage. The server asked if we wanted regular water or sparkling water. They did not specify that there was a cost for sparkling water so this was the first surprise we got on our bill. The food was wonderful. I had the lamb as my main course and it was perfectly seasoned, great balance of taste and spice and meat was very tender. We ordered some garlic naan with our meal. About mid-meal the server came and simply asked if we wanted either more water or more naan or rice. I said yes to more naan and water. When the bill came, charged for extra water, extra naan. Be upfront about your charges/costs. This is my only complaint."

  • "Everything was great except I found the resto a bit too cold (bathroom area freezing!) and the food a tad too salty. But I would still totally recommend the place!"

  • "Visited for the second time in Winterliscious because of the outstanding food and preparation with my kids. They have just returned from a trip to India and we're very impressed. Would recommend it to my friends."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed our evening at the restaurant. Food was very good. I rated the service good, not because the servers didn't check on us, but because they checked TOO much. I realize that this might be a subjective comment, but 3 different servers checked at least 3 times each. It was a little distracting. The other comment was the music. It was nice Indian music when we arrived, but they were playing regular North American bar music by the time we were leaving. Indian restaurant - should play Indian music. The evening should appeal to all the senses - taste, sight and hearing - restaurants tend to forget the music. It was nice that it wasn't loud."

  • "the food and service was very good. The restaurant was a little cold due to the door being opened and shut. Reservations may not have been scheduled well. We were asked to leave when we paid out bill since there was a number of people waiting."

  • "It's really nice to find a restaurant with a different twist on Indian food. They have added interesting items such as lobster and other "non-traditional" ingredients in their food. The only downside to my dining experience was the wait we had. My reservation was for 8:15 and arrived at 8:13. Told that it would be a 10 to 15 minute wait - understandable. During our wait the host offered us horderves. Another 5 minutes went by and the host then rushed us to the bar. We were there for another 25 minutes before we actually got seated. They had a poor system of making people wait at the entrance, then the bar, and then finally to the table. Happened to the 4 tables in front of us too. Be honest and say that you don't have seating."

  • "The decor at Amaya is nice with it's cute lights and lovely dishes. We were disappointed with the options offered for Winterlicious as they did not match what we saw on their website prior to booking. The appetizers were lovely but really small portions. The entres were okay and the desserts were totally small portions and not what we had signed up for. However, the staff are freindly and did not push to sell more food/drinks or kick people out once they were finished. Most folks stayed for a long time."

  • "Always a treat to visit Amaya. Menu had been changed in the 6 months since we'd eaten there but still delicious food. They gladly made a dish that was no longer on the menu. Great service, great food, great experience."

  • "Most Indian restaurants focus on the flavor and quality of the food. They usually lack in service, decor and presentation but Amaya is different. The quality of food is outstanding, the decor is modern and the service is great! It's the best of the old world and new world!"

  • "My wife and I had dinner at this place on Saturday Feb. 1st 2014 - we had a great time. The service was fast and efficient, the food was fresh and all our dishes cam out just at the right time. I would be hard pressed to find a single fault with this place. Overall, a great evening. Thank you."

  • "My partner and I had a fabulous Winterlicious lunch at Amya this past Sunday. The service was excellent, informative and friendly. We started with 2 appetizers: chicken tikka and some absolutely amazing cauliflower. We both chose the same entre, chicken korma with pistachios. It was great and the portions were very generous. Even the naan was good - light and fluffy, not chewie or doughy. We finished off with 2 deserts. Sadly the names escape me, but one looked like a "tim-bit" with coconut ice cream, and the other was a sweetened milk infused sponge cake. Both were excellent. I heartily recommend the food at Amaya and the $15 Winterlicious prix fix lunch is an excellent value. Enjoy!"

  • "Decor and ambiance is nice. The server we had must've been new...he took too long in between courses and even forgot to bring us our beers. Food was ok...good presentation but taste is nothing spectacular. I can get better Indian food for a cheaper price at other restaurants. It's like Canadianized Indian food...the spices were definitely toned down. Only reason we went here was because of Winterlicious. Probably won't come back again."
