Diner Reviews
  • "We came here for my 60th birthday with my boyfriend and my mother who was visiting from Florida for this event. We expected a terrific experience. Instead, the air conditioner was not on/properly set and the experience was very uncomfortable. We complained to our server who advised he would check it out but that there were guests outside so the doors were open. This was pretty unacceptable with regards to our comfort level while dining. On the other hand, our server(s) were wonderful; the food was very good and the ambience was lovely. It's just very difficult to enjoy a fine dining experience while sweating."

  • "This "casual" dining spot at the Grand Del Mar has wonderful food and service. Both dinner and breakfast were outstanding!"

  • "The food was average, Brioche french toast looked good but really dry,(needed to be dipped longer in egg mixture) eggs benedict so so.Hollandaise sparse and not much flavor. The atmosphere amazing, service excellent."

  • "I just love dining at Amaya at The Grand Del Mar. Everything about the restaurant is awesome...the location, hotel beauty, quality of food, ambience, friendly staff, gorgeous views! It's like getting away, but yet so close to home. It's the perfect place for a special occasion, and makes an every day visit feel like one."

  • "This dining experience was really special! The waiters were very good and the food was really unique! We had a 6 year old and she loved the rocking chairs by the fire outside!"

  • "I booked an evening at The Grand for my parent's 40th anniversary and father's birthday. I booked a dinner and breakfast reservation at Amaya. I wanted to pay for everything, and have all reservations in place so they wouldn't have to worry about anything. It was a little difficult to arrange for the credit card authorization. After speaking with 2 different people, I was eventually able to speak to the daytime manager who was great, and sent me the cc authorization form right away. My parents had a wonderful dinner and breakfast at Amaya. They loved the food and overall experience! My father's birthday dinner was made special with a birthday dessert."

  • "Dined here for combination birthday and Fathers Day. It is one of our favorite restaurants and didn't disappoint this time. Superb cuisine, service and ambiance. Everything from the warm pretzel rolls to crisp salads, perfectly seasoned entrees, and beautiful desserts were absolutely delicious. Multiple waitstaff ensured we never had an empty glass, and everyone at the hotel was perfectly friendly and well mannered. We have never had a less than exceptional experience at the Grand Del Mar!"

  • "Although one expects overly priced food in a hotel restaurant, especially the Grand Del Mar, one expects the food to be delicious. Not so at the Amaya. It was mediocre at best and the portions were much smaller than expected. Because the restaurant choices at the hotel were limited, we gave the Amaya a second chance. Unfortunately, it was not better than our first dining experience. We should have spent our last night off property."

  • "Food is not outstanding just ok and too expensive even for a nice place"

  • "Enjoyed a quiet dinner for two, with a nice bottle of wine and a four course meal. The shrimp appetizer was better than dessert. The pace and attentiveness of the servers was absolutely perfect for us to share our meal, conversation and the view."

  • "We have been to Amaya several times in the past. Our last visit fell short. It was a busy night and and the wait staff just couldn't keep up. We sat for 10 minutes before someone came to the table. The trend continued thru the evening. The food was okay, but nothing on par with our previous meals. We had a so-so dinner when we expected better."

  • "This restaurant is located in the gorgeous Grand Del Mar Resort so my wife and I had high expectations. Pulling up to the Hotel's grand entry next to a black Maserati in our 2012 Toyota made us feel somewhat like gypsies in the palace, and when we walked into their opulent lobby our feelings were confirmed. The wine list was amazing, and our four course meal was superb. "So why the heck was it only 'almost' perfect?" One word...service. The food was five star but the service was pure hotel lobby restaurant stuff. Appetizers and salads came out together, water glasses left empty...15-20 minute gaps between courses....ugh. I have given it 3 stars because the food was sooooo good, but everything else...well...I am sorry to say meh."

  • "Went to Amaya Grand Del Mar for an early Mother's Day breakfast (day before). Lots of nice details/high-end elements to the food. Great service (e.g., multiple servers at once...). The venue is phenomenal/nice view... Have been here for dinner, late night drinks too. Can't go wrong. Prices are high but not ultra high. Good value for what you get. Feels like being in a palace. "

  • "We started off with an unappetizing Lobster Bisque which tasted just like the water that the lobster was cooked in. This was shared with the waiter but he did nothing to deal with the comment. The pretzel rolls were good but the butter was so cold that by the time it was spread on the roll it too was cold. The sea bass was good but the sauce was bland. The asparagus only amounted to a couple of chunks hidden under the fish to make the fish look larger than it was. Then a couple of razor thin shaved asparagus strips on top that were tough. The other two meals delivered to our table were steaks. After cutting into them it was realized they each had been given the other's steak. The dinner was overpriced considering the food and attention."

  • "Our Open Table reservation had us assigned a table outside without being asked. It was cool and the restaurant was almost empty so we requested an inside table thereby seeming to confuse everyone mightily! After a time we were offered a table at the open door; no different to being outside, temperaturewise. So we asked for an inside table, again, and further confused the hostess. Eventually we suggested an inside booth and reluctantly and moodily we were seated. We have dined at Amaya often for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It seems, however, that the reputation of the Grand Hotel and Amaya has led to complacency and haughtiness. There are other options available, Rancho Valencia's Veladora, for instance, where we will go in future."

  • "I came with my family to celebrate by daughter's 10th birthday. Service was great. Everyone greeted her and made her feel special. The kids had burger and mac and cheese (the celebrant's favorite). I started with squash blossom risotto and sea bass for entree. Both of which were very good. My husband had duck breast and kale salad. Both of which were great too. The kitchen/chef was flexible and added chanterelle to the entree. The bread pudding specially made for her was outstanding."

  • "This was our first visit to The Grand Del Mar. Beautiful place and our meal was fantastic! As we were celebrating out 31st wedding anniversary, they were kind enough to start us out with a complimentary glass of bubbly and finished with complimentary dessert which was unexpected and very much appreciated!"

  • "Outdoor setting for Amaya is peaceful and green and your neighbor's table is not in your lap. Took a friend for her birthday lunch because I wanted it all to feel special and it was! Shrimp and salmon on the salads were perfectly cooked, butter for rolls was soft for spreading, iced tea was unsweetened with orange slices as requested. The birthday dessert was layers of chocolate-- one tasting crunchy and another tasted of peanut butter... together it was one of my top 5 desserts ever! Excellent service-never rushed so we could talk. Thank you Amaya!"

  • "The Amaya is a top notch place to get together with Business Colleagues and take you time having a group dinner on a business trip. The menu is well put together and has a unique focus that allows for quick ordering. We started with the lobster bisque and Catalan-style Shrimp. The bisque had an outstanding flavor and depth and was a outstanding start to dinner. The Shrimp was a favorite with 4 of our party, and lived up to the billing of our waiter. The main courses were well prepared and filling, I would recommend this place to anyone"

  • "The Amaya is a beautiful restaurant at The Grand. The food is excellent, the service is both efficient and friendly, and the ambience is great. We all asked for a Cobb salad but with shrimps instead of chicken (we've done this before!), and it was really tasty - in fact our server thought they ought to put it on the menu! If the weather is warm, sit outside, as that is really a beautiful setting."

  • "What a great find. Wonderful ambience and food for my husband's birthday. Loved that there is a separate vegetarian menu in a fine dining establishment. Outstanding customer service. Eat in or out, both areas are comfortable and beautiful. We had a romantic and sweet brunch and will be back!"

  • "I picked this restaurant for our anniversary dinner because of its largely positive reviews on both OpenTable and Yelp. However, it did not live up to its expectations. We received barely any service because we sat outside. It was a very romantic and beautiful environment, but we didn't see our waiter for the first fifteen minutes, didn't have drink menus, and waited for about half an hour between our appetizer and entrees. The waiter gave us a complimentary round of drinks, but it wasn't quite enough to remedy the situation. The food was decent, but definitely not something we'd come back for considering the service we received. If you come, DO NOT sit outside or you will be forgotten."

  • "I LOVE the Amaya Grill, however I was very disapointed in the quality of their Valentines prefixed dinner. Typically the food is wonderful and you can't go wrong whatever you order. I don't know if it was because of the heavy voluume of diners they expected, or just plain old holiday greed. At $135.00 per person (without wine pairing) portions were tiny, tiny, and the quality absolutely DID NOT live up to it's normal every day fare. Service was exceptional as always, just such a shame about the food. If you go to the Amaya Grill to dine any other time, great. I'd stay away, at least, for Valentines Day."

  • "Dinner was okay, but there was a lack of attentiveness and attention to detail. Not what I expected for a $360 meal for two. I ordered my entrée without goat cheese, and it came with the goat cheese. I mentioned it kindly at the end of the meal (since the server never came back while we were eating), and was told that "goat cheese is an acquired taste." I stated that is exactly the reason I had requested the meal without goat cheese. The server gave a very noncommittal (and passive) response: "Well, a mistake must have been made." They ended up taking the entrée off the bill, but more attention to detail would have avoided the mistake. I wonder if the servers would have been more attentive if my colleague and I were men?"

  • "I am not sure if they changed chefs but I was not as excited about the menu selections. My husband had the clay pot fish ( can't remember what kind of fish) but not memorable and the sauce for the pork chop was Ok. The service was great as always and very accmodating. Probably would give it another try. But would certainly check the menu on their web site before returning"

  • "We have eaten several times at Amaya. The atmosphere and service are excellent and previously the food was good although servings were not especially generous. On this occasion we ordered beet salads which were ok and opted to split an order of seabass. Each plate had two bites of fish and a little garnish. The plate may have consisted of 50 calories maximum. It was such a small amount of food for half an entree as to look like a joke. I've never had an appetizer as small. The food on both plates together was a tiny serving. Because we were dining with friends we didn't say anything to the waiter or make a complaint. It's just unpleasant to do that."

  • "It was for my hubby's birthday. My in-laws wanted a lovely place that provided that pampered feeling. Amaya had no problems finding our OpenTable reservation. Unfortunately at the 11:30AM time slot most of the 4 person tables were occupied and regardless where we sat it would be noisy. Once everyone left, it was more enjoyable. The patio view was peaceful and elegant. The food was delicious but expensive (i.e. My brioche french toast costed $16 but was topped with fresh banana slices, a chocolate-hazelnut sauce, and toasted hazelnuts. It was delicious. My husband had the dungeness crab benedict which costed $21). My in-laws liked that the dessert for the birthday boy was complimentary. The service was excellent."

  • "We visited Amaya for San Diego Restaurant Week and received excellent service from a very attentive staff. The selection of entrees offered included roasted duck and red snapper which were cooked to perfection and paired well with first course selections of scallops and lentil stew w/quail. Dessert is always a sweet treat at Amaya. Overall, a very nice dining experience at the Grand Del Mar."
