Diner Reviews
  • "We visited this restaurant on a recommendation of a server at another restaurant and it is fantastic. It is a cozy little spot on 9th Avenue. It would be difficult to rate any of our choices as the 'best' as they were all outstanding. Select choices of our foursome were: a pear salad, a mozzarella salad-a restaurant specialty, linguini con vongole, home-made ravioli - so very good, and a veal selection. All the food was superior. Our server Andrea was very helpful, personable and fun. If you are looking for an authentic Italian restaurant like you would find on a little side street in Italy this is it. A little difficult to find but well worth it. It will become one of our 'must' visit restaurants on our next visit to NYC."

  • "We were a party of 4. We arrived early, were immediately seated. The waiter was great, the food was outstanding. We will return."

  • "We had high expectations based on tripadvisor reviews. The calamari was very good, the Caesar salad was ordinary, pasta was delicious, Tiramisu delicious. However the service was extremely slow. It was a busy Sunday night, World Cup soccer was on, etc. Also do not go unless you want to yell over all the noise. Very loud. Overall mediocre."

  • "My sister and I were in a rush to go to a play. We made our reservation earlier that day. Amarone's was able to accomodate us on a busy night. The service was quick but attentive. The wine was great and the food was very innovative. WE had a great dinner and got to the theater on time."

  • "We stopped for a late dinner after a show and the food and service were both excellent. The pear salad was delicious. My daughter loved the Gamberoni and my seafood pasta was very good and generous with the seafood."

  • "We've been to Amarone several times pre-theater; because it's a little off the beaten path, it doesn't tend to be as crowded as those closer to Times Square. Food is good, service decent, nice atmosphere and just an extra block from many of the Broadway theaters. It's a nice, dependable place but have always felt it could kick it up a notch or two."

  • "Had dinner with my boyfriend here, and the food and service was amazing. I ate the chicken for dinner and it was very good. For dessert I ate the tiramisu and it was amazing! We went back for lunch two days later and I will definitely go back again."

  • "This was probably our fifth or sixth visit to Amarone over the past three years. We live in Virginia Beach and visit New York City about three times a year. We usually try some new restaurants with each visit, but we keep coming back to our favorites, of which Amarone is one. The best part of our experience is Renald, our waiter - he always takes good care of us, with a great sense of humor, and makes us feel special."

  • "Easily made reservations thru Open Table. Arrived at restaurant 10 minutes before our 5:30pm reservation, was seated immediately. Tables were rather close together, but ambience was nice. Wait staff provided good service, presentation of food was beautiful, food was hot and taste was well balanced and delicious. Would definitely go back again or recommend to anyone."

  • "My favorite restaurant in the city. Every time I go there I have an incredible experience and the food and service are always the best. Recently I brought two business associates for dinner and they could not stop raving about the incredible food and service. The wine list is excellent and the prices are excellent for the area as well."

  • "Small volume in glasses of wine. Mussel appetizer hearty with tasty sauce. Pasta dishes good. Noise level intrusive, 9th Avenue quieter at rush hour."

  • "Food was great, service was so-so, we must of had a new waiter who screwed up all the drink orders to start, but then all went well, worth the trip and would go back, even though we did not have any amarone."

  • "Went with my kids - mistake. Not kid-friendly. I should've read up on that part. Good for pre-theater dinner. Loud and extremely crowded. Toilets were very clean. Took a long time for food to arrive. Expensive. And hostess was wearing totally inappropriate attire. Dress was way too short and tight. Might work for a dance club, but not a neighborhood restaurant. Food was very good, though. We won't be back. Going to Pietrasanta across the street. More space and less expensive, and great food."

  • "My wife and I had a good, but not great, dinner at Amarone. The weather was beautiful so we were lucky to get a table in their sidewalk cafe area. Service was welcoming, attentive and not intrusive. I ordered a duck special, my wife ordered pasta with shrimp and we had a Caesar salad and Calamari app. Neither one of us were unhappy with our food, but it wasn't memorable, either. Prices were reasonable for the area, a good choice for pre-theater. At the next table a couple had very little time before their show, they ordered soup and were in and out in less than 1/2 hour, a good choice when pressed for time."

  • "We stopped in and were fortunately able to be seated despite the restaurant being busy on a Friday evening. We started with the Fried Calamari and shared the Fava Bean Salad which were both excellent. Salad was unique and delicious. Then we had entrees of Orecchiette, Chicken Parmigiana, Veal Chop, and unfortunately cannot recall the last meal. But everyone enjoyed their meals thoroughly. We were celebrating a birthday and they put together a beautiful plate of mixed desserts and served that along with Grappa and Moscato. The owner was sweet and the servers were professional and attentive. They made the night special and everything was delicious."

  • "Ate at Amarone before theatre last week; and most of the food was good---BUT, when the swordfish or tuna we wanted and ordered, we were offered instead the monkfish special after 15 minutes when the waiter returned and said our choice was sold out!!! This special was not only some of the toughest, and 'oldest', stale fish we had ever eaten, but it was also at least $8---$10 more than the rest of the menu. This was not told to us, as it was a special As we had to get to theatre, they were running quite late anyway, so we had to keep the fish, but could hardly eat it!!! Too bad, as we will NOT return"

  • "gathered here for a small family reunion , eight of us enjoyed a very pleasant setting, good service , food and wine, everyone seemed to enjoy their meal, the only disappointment was the sampler antipasto plate , thought it was going to be a large plate to share and was served as individual tasting plates, therefore, you couldn't choose to eat just what you preferred, would recommend choosing specific appetizers for a Manhattan eatery the prices were very reasonable for the good quality of food and service would recommend it to friends and would definitely consider returning if I am in the area major plus was they did not rush us through our meal and we could enjoy our company "

  • "Trying to understand why this place got rave reviews. I'm a frequent diner and go into New York a lot. Possibly people are getting use to mediocre. My daughter and I ordered the same cocktails to start. Hers was so sweet it tasted like cotton candy. Mine was tart. For 13 dollars a drink, I expect almost perfection. Her salad was bland..some lettuce with mushrooms thrown in, mine at least was acceptable. I felt rushed with the waiter asking immediately after giving the specials, "are you ready?". Wine by the glass was listed with the name of the wine, no explanation of where it came from, or what year. When I asked, the waiter then hesitated before answering, "Italy". Coffee bitter. Coffee is one thing a restaurant must do right!"

  • "We returned to amarone to introduce Friends to the great experience we had two years ago. The food was much more average and the service was not just rushed (party of six out in an hour) but the staff didn't listen to what we were asking - brought red when we wanted white wine, and tried to pitch only specific wines that were more expensive. VERY disappointed."

  • "They didn't have my reservation, despite my confirmation, which, thankfully, I had with me. They crammed us into a two-fer table when we were three. We did finally get them to move us to a larger table. We waited a very long time to be served although we had told them we were headed to the theatre and had allowed 1:45 for dinner. The lettuce in my salad had brown edges. My ravioli was OUTSTANDING, but my friends' food was just okay. We chose it because of proximity to a theatre we were attending, but probably would not return. I have to reiterate, in all honesty, that the ravioli stuffed with ricotta and spinach was exceptional, however."

  • "There aren't many places in NYC that can make you feel truly at home with every visit but Amarone definitely can! From the friendly staff to the DELICIOUS, fresh made pastas and perfectly cooked steaks and seafood - you cant go wrong at Amarone. Full of repeat customers and loyal locals - with a cute little patio for dining out front and an intimate but friendly setting indoors - make a reservation and take advantage of the amazing experience ahead!"

  • "I was hesitant to book a reservation here because of the mixed reviews on several sites. The food was average and my ravioli would have been better if it was warm. Three dishes were covered in an orange sauce that was bland. The calamari was ok but not the best I've had. The best part of the meal was the dessert-hazelnut gelato and tres leches cake. The service was nice and attentive. "

  • "We had dinner at Amarone - table for six - near the two hour mark as we were finishing our mediocre meal, the owner stopped by to ask us to vacate the table. Yes he offered us a drink we did not want, but we felt this was extremely rude for a bill that was over $400. We were rushed through the entire meal and the service was inattentive. This was a celebration dinner that was spoiled by bad manners (when there were empty tables). Would NOT recommend."

  • "It isn't easy to find an enjoyable meal near the theater district which might explain why this restaruant was so busy so early. Well trained but unobtrusive wait staff that does not rush the customer. Specials are the way to go. "

  • "We ate there before an 8:00 show. We had 6:00 reservations. We had a delicious meal, wine, and the service was fantastic!! The food was amazing!! We were done with plenty of time for the show and would definitely recommend!!"

  • "Charming neighborhood place to eat. Nice menu and crisp looking tables and glasses. When weather is nice, eating outside is treat in spite of traffic. There is much activity and you get a real sense of the city. On Sundays it is toned down. Give it a try. Reasonable city prices."

  • "We ate at Amarone, Sat 5/10/2014. I like Amarone very much and have eaten there many times over many years. Amarone has a rep for tight spaces - that's OK, what else is new in mid-town. But on Saturday we were given a table within 1 to 2 feet of the waiters' station. This table should not have existed. There was no space for the staff to move through. The buss's had literally to pass water pitchers over my wife's head to pass by. After being bumped/jostled several times, I complained to the maître d'. He admitted this table was only there for the pre-theatre trade and would disappear later. I understand tables are money. However there are limits - and this setting went way past that."

  • "Amarone was delicious. Great place just far enough away from the bustle and touristy traps of 8th avenue. The service was great - quick and responsive - and the food was delicious. Perfect little place before a show!"

  • "Amarone is that special place to eat before your Broadway show. It's near the theaters, yet not on top if them so your dining experience is private and quiet. Amarone serves fresh , home made pasta dishes as well as specialty dishes. The menu is an exciting one. Service is impeccable. I've shared this gem many times with friends to great response. It's MY neighborhood Broadway gem. "
