I was blown away. I eat at nice
places frequently and more and more it seems all facade and very little substance. Amarena had it all and I will certainly be back."

We really enjoyed our experience
at Amarena. It was my wife's birthday. Our waitress and the entire wait staff made it special. The food was really good. I'd like to say excellent, but that would be hyperbolic this close to North Beach. Not that I expected it, but they didn't comp the dessert on her birthday."
Dined on 4/4/2014
A very solid menu in the Southern
Italian tradition. Wild boar, pastas in great sauces, and extensive appetizer list."
Dined on 3/25/2014
The osso buco had obviously been
cooked days before and was barely warm. The cucumber salad featured huge thick chunks of cucumber. I would not return."
Dined on 3/20/2014
I really enjoyed my pasta dish and
the service and ambiance are good. Wine wine and a shared salad it was a bit more expensive than we planned. We'll just have to remember that for next time."

Had dinner for a party of 8 on
Saturday and we loved everything - food was delicious (seafood fettucine!), service excellent, and the staff was so incredibly kind. Will definitely be coming back."
Dined on 3/15/2014
Something different from the
current trend of bare-bones, wooden tabletops, and formulaic service restaurants in the polk street/russian hill neighborhood. White linen and moderate noise level allow for conversation at the table without resorting to shouting. Service was very good with entire wait staff making sure that water was filled and dishes brought out in a timely fashion. The housemade pasta was excellent. The tiramisu was also excellent and served in a slightly different way with additional espresso on the side. Will certainly return if I want a relaxed place to eat and converse with friends."
Dined on 3/14/2014
The portabello mushroom appetizer
was amazing. It was the star of the show despite the two other yummy meals I shared with a friend."
Dined on 3/11/2014
The food was delicious. From the
wine to dessert, unbelievable."
Dined on 3/4/2014
Everything was "ok" but nothing
was so good that I'd go back. Food was fine, but not a big menu. Service was slow and not so friendly - we got no welcome or told of specials, just "are you ready to order". Kinda pricey for the portion size. If I lived in this neighborhood I'd maybe go a couple times a year, but not worth a drive from elsewhere in the city or out of the city. The Bruschetta appetizer was good but only 3 teeny little pieces of bread."

I have eaten here many times- I
keep going back for the great pastas and sangria. Speed is not their strong point, which is ok, a nice lingering dinner is lovely. Yet the service we experienced this weekend was abysmal. Drinks didn't come out for 20 minutes, our order wasn't taken for another 10-15, and we waited well over an hour for the actual food. (all 4 orders were just pasta!) The waiter had the audacity to drop by after we had been sipping the SAME drinks for 30 minutes to ask how everything was?? We had NO food and no refills. We watched adjacent tables start and finish meals while we waited. He had clearly forgotten to fire our order, and did not have the confidence to rectify the situation appropriately. So disappointed."

Went to Amarena for Valentines and
the fixed meal was perfect. Awesome food, great service....love this place."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We frequent this restaurant and
usually love it but our valentines day dinner was terrible. Awful food with the pre - fixe menu and way more tables than normal. Very dissppinting valentines day dinner."
Dined on 2/14/2014
We went on valentines day and they
had a set menu -it was good but the pasta and main courses arrived luke warm. The food was good but not worth the 85 per person. The service was excellent."
Dined on 2/14/2014
...listed and then a $210 bill...
I'd recommend going elsewhere if you are planning to spend"
Dined on 2/14/2014
The food, the waitress, the owner
are all exceptional for a neighborhood spot. Parking can be a challenge so if you can walk or take UBER - that's your best bet. But the owner was terrific and helped us find a spot -- so all in all a great experience!"
Dined on 2/8/2014
We took a friend with us and all
three had different dishes, all of which were beautifully presented and absolutely delicious. We will definitely return and send anyone who wants a taste of Italy in a place that let's one feel like they are right in a Tuscan or Umbrian village restaurant run by a chef who would be 5 star if s/he were in SF!"
Dined on 1/28/2014
Great neighborhood spot, excellent
food and nice atmosphere. Would definitely go back again."

Nice to encounter a restaurant
participating in "Dine About Town" (Jan. 2014) with very appealing choices for each course. Food was well prepared, nicely seasoned, with yummy flavors throughout. Quite busy for a Sunday evening, which may have accounted for longer wait for the entrees to arrive after the first course. Overall, lively neighborhood place with warm colors and feeling, good selections and reasonable prices on most items. Hadn't been in quite awhile, but plan to go back soon. Thank you!"

We tried this restaurant thru the
'Dine about Town' initiative and were absolutely wow-ed away. Cute small simple place. Impressive wine list. The best had still to come: the food. The Dine about Town menu was a selection of their regular menu and had THE best and freshest burrata we had in the SF Bay Area. The other starter was the beet salad with nuts and spinach which was incredibly fresh with an exceptional dressing making it a very healthy, tasty enjoyable dish. Beautiful colors as well. One of our main dishes I can't not tell about was the butternut squash ravioli, OMG! THE softest you'll have and sooo tasty. Desserts were gorgeous too. All in all one of the better Italian places we got to know in SF. A true pleasure to dine here."

We spent my husbands 50'th
birthday at Amarena for dinner. It was a fabulous choice. We brought our 1 1/2 year old who was probably a bit too noisy but the owner was very sweet to us regardless. Salmon is a favorite dish for me and the salmon at Amarena may be the freshest and best I have ever tasted. There were these roasted strips of potato or parsnip laid under the salmon that added a delicate sweetness and texture, making the dish fondly memorable too. The porcini mushroom appetizer that my husband ordered on creamy polenta cries out for mention. Yummy! Remember to try the amarenas (cherries in syrup) because they are like sugary kisses."

I have recommended Amarena many
times..Love it and never disappointed."
Dined on 11/18/2013
This is a lovely Italian
restaurant. Nice classic Italian starters and awesome pastas. My favorite Italian so far in SF."
Dined on 1/10/2014
I love this place. First of all,
the food is very authentic and delicious! It also has a very charming and cosy atmosphere that's great for a catch-up with friends or a date. The staff is super nice and friendly (and Italian!). Great spot - check it out."
Dined on 1/1/2014
I LOVE THIS RESTAURANT!!! As my
wife said " you walk in and it smells like Italy!!..." More importantly it taste like Italy. And the service is great too... The ones we love the best are; waiter (Tario) and waitresses (Giada, Nicola)."

Located on a quiet corner in
Russian Hill area, Amarena was exactly what we where looking for. We had early reservations (6pm) and were just the second table of diners, but by the time we left the restaurant was full. The service was excellent until the rush came and we had a wait for the desert menu. That proved to be worthwhile for the Crème Brulee was as good as I've tasted anywhere."
Dined on 12/27/2013
I love this place; it has been a
favorite for years. Friendly, unpretentious, neighborhood gem, but perfect for a special occasion. Always feel welcomed and the food is never disappointing. Recommend."
Dined on 12/20/2013
Loved our experience here - it was
a quiet mid-week evening, service was attentive & warm, atmosphere warm & evocative. Clams with pasta was delicious - the salmon special was exactly that, would order it again in a heart beat. Prices are reasonable."
Dined on 12/11/2013
We walked down for dinner after
drinks at home. This isn't the first time this has been our modus operandi. We are always remembered, the wines are good and well-priced, and the food is like Italian comfort food. It will continue to be our go to place when we don't have the energy to organize a full-fledged dinner party at home."
Dined on 12/5/2013
I expected better after reading
the menu. The gnocchi portion was too small, the salmon was mushi. Carpaccio good, ossobuco average. Most of the food was too salty. Good ice cream."
Dined on 11/25/2013
Yes, Amarena is still holding its
own. The wide spaghetti all'amatriciana was fabulous; perfectly cooked pasta with a flavorful and rich tomato sauce. The Red Snapper special was tasty although at $24 not quite worth the price. It remains one of my go to Italian restaurants in Russian/Nob Hill area."
Dined on 11/22/2013
The service really makes this
place. The waitresses have been there for a while and treat everyone so well. Great spot."
Dined on 11/16/2013
very authentic and our waitress is
from italy. Very warm and feel very authentic."
Dined on 11/15/2013
I will definitely dine here
whenever I'm in SF. Just off Hyde, a cable car ride was easy. Had a very lovely dinner with friends. Waiter forgot to bring a glass of Vin Santo I'd ordered, but made up for it by making it on the house with a side of mini biscotti. Veal was delicious."
Dined on 11/5/2013
The food was delicious and worth
the wait, but it took much longer than expected to be seated. I made a reservation on Open Table for 9 pm. We arrived timely, but were not seated until almost 9:45 pm. The server was great, the wine was amazing, and the food really hit the spot. If you are going on Saturday night though, expect to wait. The seating is limited and it's very noisy inside when crowded."
Dined on 10/26/2013
Went here because the Yelp reviews
were good, and they didn't lie. The food was amazing (I had the butternut squash ravioli, which I highly recommend), our waitress was friendly and really helpful with the menu and wine list, and the owner chatted with us before we left. It wasn't difficult to get a table on a weekday night and it's location makes it a place you might not know about unless you stumble upon it"
Dined on 10/21/2013
The ambiance is cozy, the food is
great and the wine list is Italian with some interesting choices. Has been around for a long time in the Russian Hill neighborhood. Parking can be a problem but taking the Hyde St cable car and making a short walk is the easy way if you aren't cabbing or have a car service. It's well worth the trip for authentic Italian food. If you live in the neighborhood you know that it gets busy and is a small restaurant so reservations are usually best. Would definitely recommend and have not been disappointed with any of the food choices!"
Dined on 10/18/2013
We loved coming to this
neighborhood restaurant. There's another Italian restaurant up the street that everyone raves about. I've been there and have never understood the high praise. Amarena has delicious food, personalized and friendly service, and a warm and energetic energetic atmosphere. Reasonably priced too."
Dined on 10/18/2013
The restaurant has gone down in
recent years. The banquette seating was full of stains and quite honestly I was embarissed to have my girlfriend sit down at this place. Bruschetta was very bland, no garlic or taste of decent quality olive oil. I am an advocate for small businesses but not when I waste $150 on a bad dinner The place was more or less empty - Should I have taken that as a heads up? Sadly I will not be back."
Dined on 10/15/2013
Amarena is on my must visit list
anytime that I travel to San Francisco. It is a great neighborhood restaurant that was recommended to me years ago by the Fairmont Concierge. I have never been disappointed by the warm surroundings, amazing food, and good wine list. Service was attentive without being rushed."
