A word from Amali
Amali is a sustainably driven Mediterranean restaurant. Rather than write about ourselves, we prefer to let the press speak for us.

Eater 38 Essential New York Restaurants 2013-2014
This handsome Mediterranean restaurant serves one of the city's top brick chickens, and the seafood, pasta dishes, and charcuterie are just as good. Amali is also something of a destination for Greek wine enthusiasts.

Critic's Recommendation, NYT, 2012. Amali has a commitment to seasonality and sustainability and a daring wine list.

Two Stars, Adam Platt, NY Mag, 2012. A success...It gives over a whole section of the appetizer menu to salads and vegetables along with an impressive wine bottle list.

Wine & Spirits Magazine, Top Newcomer 2012. Amali takes an American approach to Mediterranean ingredients, creating something that is at once more Greek than any restaurant and less ethnic than any of them.

Diner Reviews
  • "Overpriced and horrendous service. Food was enjoyable but the lack of attention from our waitress ruined the meal, which was overly expensive."

  • "This is my favorite place for business lunch. Focus on in season and local ingrediens is nice. Food is always good!"

  • "Excellent blend of Italian and Greek cuisine. Highly recommend this restaurant!"

  • "This is a great little neighborhood restaurant. Clean flavors and simple dishes. We had the grilled dorade fish and a seafood pasta sepcial. Both were fantastic. We also had a great conversation and assistance from Jason the wine guy. He was great. However, we could not get our bill from the waiter. When we flagged him down and finally got it, we could not get him to pick it up! We had to sit and wait until we flagged him down yet again. The wait staff needs to pay more attention to their customers. Otherwise, a good experience."

  • "Loved this restaurant! It was the perfect place to sit and enjoy a lovely meal and a glass of wine... Or two."

  • "At first glance, the menu doesn't seem very exciting. In every simple & sophisticated dish, even the sides, there exist a harmony of a million interesting flavors and textures that pleasantly stimulate your taste buds. The art is in the seasoning. The use of different herbs perfectly matched w the ingredients and cooking method turns even the most boring dish into a plate of delight."

  • "This was my second time there and it was awesome! Food, service, wine, everything. I will 100% be back"
    Dined on 3/27/2014
  • "The food was delicious. Portions small and over priced. Wine list was vast. Glasses of wine also a bit overpriced but it is NYC. It's to be expected."

  • "This was only an ok dining experience. The food and service were nothing to get excited about"

  • "Having only 3 nights available for dinner during a 5 day stay in NY, I wanted to go somewhere special. I picked Amalie from Open Tables's recommended list, and tok a chance on the reports of high noise level. We were there on a Monday night. It was almost full, but the conversation levels were not at all irksome, and the piped music was a gentle background. THE FOOD WAS FANTASTIC. Innovative, imaginative fusion of flavours which worked amazingly well. We liked it so much that we went for lunch on our last day, wanting to end on a high note. Also went to the River Café, see my review for that."

  • "The food and ambience were excellent, as was the wine selection. Highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "I ordered one of the specials which was locally caught sardines, kale & roasted red peppers on crustini with a side of crispy white fish with a lemon aioli for dipping. It was a flavor party in my mouth! Absolutely delicious! I may be a bit partial to this since I loved sardines even as a young child. I also had the taro salad with rutabaga and feta cheese. This also did not disappoint. The Feta tasted so fresh and it was very well balanced. Service was very fast and pleasant. I would definitely recommend to a friend and will visit again next time I'm in NYC."

  • "A friend recommended Amali and said it was supposed to be one of the best spots in midtown. She could not have been more right! The staff, from the moment you walk in the door, is attentive while also being relaxed. It gives you the feelng of being in someone's house versus their restaurant. The ambiance it beautiful. Rustic exposed wood mixed with raw metal and exposed bulb lighting. A Restoration Hardware vibe done the right way. Then the food was simply to die for. I ordered the lamb shank and my friend ordered the Dorade. Both dishes were absolutely 5 star "foodie" experiences. I could not recommend this restaurant any more HIGHLY!"

  • "This was our first time at Amali and we enjoyed the experience immensely. The food was creative and delicious. The service was outstanding and the atmosphere warm and inviting."

  • "Excellent Mediterranean food...blend of Italian and Greek...absolutely delicious!"

  • "The noise was unbearable. This restaurant needs to fix the acoustics because it is impossible to hear. The back room is even worst since the floor is tiled. We were told that the restaurant tried added baffling under the tables but people remove it. They need to bring in an acoustician because more than baffling is needed. We left with a headache."

  • "Great Farm to Table Foods. Fresh Salads and Pastas. More Mediterrean than Greek"
    Dined on 1/10/2014
  • "The restaurant is dated. The place was empty when we walked in so it was very quiet. The grilled octopus was very nice but I've had better. I was expecting more based on the reviews, will admit, I was disappointed. Staff was very attentive and informative. Too many choices in NYC, I will not return to Amali."

  • "Service is slow and the choices for lunch are not great.I think maybe the dinner menu would better."
    Dined on 2/15/2014
  • "Everything we ordered was really delicious. The service could use some more professionalism. We arrived on a snowy Saturday night and it was very quiet and easy to talk. The restaurant filled while we were there and although the noise level rose, it was still pretty easy to hear our own table's conversation. I would definitely go back. The octopus and Hen of the woods salad were excellent and the brick chicken also got great reviews."

  • "The food is extraordinary, far above the "usual" Italian cuisine. The service matched, accommodating our needs and wishes. Highly recommended."

  • "Make sure not to miss roasted brussell sprouts and the Chicken under the Brick!"

  • "I dined here with work colleagues - about 8 of us - for lunch. The food was good and the service attentive, but the pace of wine and food was extraordinarily slow for being a restaurant that caters to business people. It took 40 minutes to get a bottle of wine opened."

  • "We've been coming to Amali for just about a year now. Decided it was time for our parents to meet each other and picked this spot to do it. It was perfect! Food was delicious (across the board - we tried a number of appetizers, everything from fish to red meat to vegetables, dessert), service was excellent/friendly, and everyone was completely wow'ed by the experience. What a fantastic place!"

  • "Glorious veggie options, utterly delicious not a run-of-the-mill dish in sight. Great choices. Can't wait to go back. Only drawback was it was WILDLY noisy! Too bad - popularity can be a curse!"

  • "the waiter was very attentive and complete on the explanations. portions are well served. food menu with good options and well prepared. wine list quite democratic. good environment for a romantic casual dinner... definitely will return."

  • "Service was very nice and ambiance ok, not particularly warming. Food was very Mediterraean and extremely salty. Not memorable in a good way."

  • "We eat there at least twice a week and every single time, we rave at just how great Amali is."
    Dined on 1/20/2014
  • "Service is really great. All of the waiters and managers know their stuff when it comes to the wine selection and food. I've eaten here several times and I've hosted several company events here and each time has just been fantastic. Being Greek I have never been a fan of Greek wines, but apparently I've been drinking the wrong type of wine. We were able to explain to the manager Jason what we were looking for and he brought a wine that perfectly it our criteria. This place is absolutely fantastic all the way around. Be sure to book your reservation in advance as it tends to get difficult to get a table on certain days."

  • "An unforgettable restaurant. Perfect for foodies and others who like to have food on their plates and for it to be unbelievably delicious ! We misunderstood their wine policy-Check before you bring- unlikely they will approve. Hot olives not worth it and bread was too cold. Sea bass was beautiful-wished they had let us see it a bit longer-whisked away before we could appreciate it and we would have liked the head and tail-no chance to ask. Broccoli, cauliflower pasta special, eggplant and flatbread each was unique and worth every bite. I am still dreaming about the flavor, can't wait to go back!"

  • "Quality of ingredients and the preparation was outstanding. Unpretentious (especially for the area). Only snag was the service. A lot of time would pass between server visits."

  • "We were looking for a special (but not outrageous) place to bring friends from out of town. Amali was a great choice. The staff was attentive without being pretentious. The recommendations were spot on. We actually allowed our waiter to pick our meal and surprise us and were not disappointed. The Hen of the Woods salad was delicious, as was the octopus. Two pasta dishes (which I would not necessarily have chosenon my own) were top notch, especially the one with merguese and broccoli rabe. The chicken was a little boring but the ribs were wickedly good. The sommelier was lovely about uncorking our special wine. All in all, a terrific experience."

  • "I've hosted a small party and a dinner for two at Amali. Both meals were very good. Seafood and pasta really shine. I also liked the spin on a Caesar salad made with escarole and toasted breadcrumbs as opposed to croutons. The light crunch throughout was very nice."

  • "I've gone many times and think the food is quite good. Basically Italian with other Mediterranean additions. Nice wines by the glass. The service can be less attentive than you might want, but very friendly and they cover for each other. The noise level at lunch is low, but can be fairly high when it is full at dinner. The glass-roofed back room is great for brunch."

  • "We used Open Table to make a reservation for the Charles Dickens Inspired Christmas dinner, but the restaurant manager informed us that the dinner could only be reserved via phone or email. We stayed for dinner anyway and the food was very good. The service was excellent and we were happy to discover a new restaurant in this neighborhood."

  • "We had a very special meal here. Everything from the bread to start to the sesame crusted chocolate torte were excellent. We shared the eggplant appetizer - terrines drizzled in a spicy red sauce that set it a apart, as well as the ricotta, spread on toasty baguettes - very very good. We then followed with the cacio e pepe pasta - sauce was the right balance of creamy/buttery, and cacio pepe punch - delicious. The best part of the meal was the lamb shoulder over mashed potatoes and spinach with a light glaze - broke apart with a fork - wonderful! We ended with the chocolate torte in a sesame crust that the waiter described as elegant. I'd agree. The service was highly attentive without being intrusive. Worth a trip to the UES!"
