A word from Amali
Amali is a sustainably driven Mediterranean restaurant. Rather than write about ourselves, we prefer to let the press speak for us.

Wine Enthusiast, Top 100 Wine Restaurants in the Country, 2014

Eater 38 Essential New York Restaurants 2013-2014
"This handsome Mediterranean restaurant serves one of the city's top brick chickens, and the seafood, pasta dishes, and charcuterie are just as good. Amali is...a destination for Greek wine enthusiasts."

Critic's Recommendation, New York Times, 2012: "Amali has a commitment to seasonality and sustainability and a daring wine list."

Two Stars, New York Magazine, 2012: "It gives over a whole section of the menu to salads and vegetables along with an impressive wine bottle list."

Wine & Spirits Magazine, Top Newcomer. "Amali takes an American approach to Mediterranean ingredients, creating something that is at once more Greek than any restaurant and less ethnic than any of them."

  • "Food is always tasty. Love the Farm to table concept of the restaurant, its def my little neighborhood gem. i LOVE their Octopus and Broccoli (BEST IVE EVER TASTED) and mine is always prepared GF so no breadcrumbs and STILL AMAZING... unfortunately now the broccoli is not in season :-( i was CRAVING it all day! so sad and hope they bring it back soon! they replaced it with Kale which was very tasty yet drenched in Olive Oil. I would prefer a bit less oil indeed.."

  • "Very good food but over priced for environment. Signature drinks not great. Stick with basics."

  • "too expensive limited wine by glass choices but better by the bottle list a tad pretentious excellent service....a small restaurant but a large, efficient staff"

  • "We went early for pre-theatre and we were so pleased with our dinner. The fresh grilled fish was a 10. The heirloom tomato salad was quite large and delicious. Our waiter was excellent!!! He didn't hover yet was there to offer great service. He even let us know that we were entitled to a pre-theatre discount since we were on our way to 57 e57 theatre. I don't think that I was ever told that before by a waiter. We will go back another night and dine at 8:00 or 8:30pm."

  • "Thoroughly enjoyed the food and service at Amali. We each had a fish dish which were extremely tasty, though I would hesitate to repeat as I don't care to wrestle with bones. That said, my fish dish was amongst the tastiest and best prepared i have had in many years. The side dishes, including the flatbread and the salad were unique and a pleasure to eat. The service was more than attentive and friendly. And when the owner became aware of our commentary regarding fish bones he made sure to provide complimentary after dinner aperitifs, which was a professional move on his part. The only disappointment, - the coffee, which we would not order again. We were told that the restaurant would indeed be changing their coffee purveyor."

  • "What a wonderful evening we had at Amali. The food was delicious and the service was the best we have had in aomg time. Our waitperson was knowledgeable, attentive and always had a smile. The food was outstanding and Jim Mallios, the owner, made us all feel welcome."

  • "We dined at Amali based on a recommendation from somebody who had lived in NYC for more than a decade. While it is true that you could eat your way through the city, this place made the short list of places not to miss. It did not disappoint. The food was wonderful and unique, and the atmosphere was a welcomed contrast to the hustle and bustle found in much of the city. The prices reflect the quality of the presentations. Highly recommended to anybody looking for a truly delicious meal."

  • "I must admit I was very disappointed. The salad was very good but the meal went downhill from there. The fish was dry and tasteless. I hardly touched it usually the waiter will ask if it was all right given that I hardly touched it. Maybe it was what I chose but I would not risk going back to give it another try. I don't think that any of the above choices to recommend the restaurant apply."

  • "The seasonal flatbread was delicious, and they had a special ravioli with grilled corn that was to die for. The chef did a great job of staying seasonal, keeping dishes a bit lighter, and we were not disappointed with one thing that was served. The waiters were absolutely perfect, and made the experience that much better! With that said, make sure you don't end up in the back room...we were seated there first, and while it has an open ceiling, the ambiance is very poor. There is a musky/cellar smell, that I am sure will go with time, but the lighting was very bright! Everything outside of the first seating was perfect, they were extremely accommodating the second we requested to move into the front room! I would DEFINITELY recommend."

  • "Amali has a farm like rustic decor but is elegant at the same time. The service is courteous and explains food selections to you. We shared the salami, dry cured sausage, cheese choice appetizer. This was excellent. My entree was the parsley pappardelle Bolognese which was delightful, and my wife had the braised lamb shoulder, which was also delightful. The meal was finished with a sticky chocolate beet cake. The cocktails from the bar are to die for. The front room is colorful and lively. All in all, I would recommend this new restaurant."

  • "Our NYC resident niece recommended Amali, and she knows her stuff! A charming little place with clean, modern lines and an excellent shortish menu. I hardly ever order chicken "out", but the Amali version of "chicken baked under a brick" appealed to me. It was FABULOUS - luscious, juicy, crispy and beautifully seasoned skin - literally, THE BEST! My vegetarian niece had an octopus (squid?) dish that she declared "delicious", and my husband's braised lamb shank was also a winner. Kudos all around. We've already started sending our Baltimore friends to Amali when they hit the Big Apple. Oh, and nobody rushed us at all when we were the last ones in the restaurant and lingering over coffee and dessert. Thanks, Amali!"

  • "Not knowing what brick chicken was I was prepared for all possibilities - as it turned out is a fantastic, flavoursome and moist way to enjoy chicken - highly recommended! My only comment is that NY restaurants in general don't seem to get the idea of GF - are there no coeliacs in the US - makes options very limiting."

  • "My friend and I chose Amali during our recent visit to nY and were impressed with the wine, food and service. The summer wine flight selections were whimsical, delicious and reasonably priced. Our food was so tasty, the fresh parsley pappardelle was a perfect summer pasta and the signature chicken under the brick is one of the tastiest I have with exception of my husbands on the BBQ. The location is great if you are staying in mid-town, nice walking neighborhood."

  • "This is no routine Italian restaurant. The orchiette with sausage and broccoli rabe is a delicacy. This iss true of its other pasta offerings. I like them so much that I haven't tried other items, but wouold expect them to show the same subtle delicious flavors. A very fine chef!"

  • "We loved Amali! The food was outstanding. My husband loved the pasta bolognese (which he orders everywhere, so he is a very good judge) and I loved my chicken under a brick. The service was good too; the manager stopped by our table repeatedly. We will definitely be back!!"

  • "Portions were very small; even with appetizers and side dishes, we were hungry at end of meal. We ordered fish that we were told was 2-1/2 pounds, ample for three people. Either a smaller fish was inadvertently served or most of the fish was discarded by server before it was served. And dessert was different from what the waitress described and was not appealing. We are happy to pay for a good dining experience; this was overpriced for a disappointing meal."

  • "Amanil is a wonderful little restaurant that also can cater to larger groups. We happened upon it before going to theater and we were in for a wonderfully tasty surprise. The brussel sprouts were amazing and the flatbread was so flavorful... We liked the fish special and spaghetti. We left room for dessert and was delighted by so many unique flavors of gelato and sorbets but our favorite was the pineapple cannoli sundae- that was the best mix of flavors. We will look forward to going back again soon"

  • "I made a reservation on Open Table for my Mother and rest of our family of 5 for Mother's Day. We all really enjoyed the ambience and the service was very attentive. We had a lovely burrata campagna appetizer served with a delicious toasted bread but there wasn't anywhere near enough provided for the amount of cheese. One guest had a very enjoyable brioche french toast with berries. 3 of us ordered a dish described as shrimp and grits. This turned out to be an extremely peppery dish with a tomato sauce but there was nothing in the menu description indicating either pepper or tomato. Another guest ordered mussels which were also extremely peppery. Nevertheless, it is a lovely restaurant and we all had a good time. "

  • "This is our fifth or sixth time at Amali, and each time we are more impressed. Mother's day lunch with 8 at our table ranging from 2 years to 77 and everyone was incredibly content. My very difficult-to-please family members all turned to me and said "THIS is fantastic! Thanks for making the reservation" My mother requires great service, my husband desires unusual beer, we all fought over the burrata (after two orders) and I - as a food photographer - care nothing if a meal is not lovingly made and gorgeously presented. My 2 year old son devoured his pasta and artichoke ice cream and the 11 and 14 year olds actually looked up from their devices when the food arrived. Add to that the sustainable mission of the restaurant and that's that."

  • "This is a great little neighborhood restaurant. Clean flavors and simple dishes. We had the grilled dorade fish and a seafood pasta sepcial. Both were fantastic. We also had a great conversation and assistance from Jason the wine guy. He was great. However, we could not get our bill from the waiter. When we flagged him down and finally got it, we could not get him to pick it up! We had to sit and wait until we flagged him down yet again. The wait staff needs to pay more attention to their customers. Otherwise, a good experience."
