Diner Reviews
  • "Excellent food and service. We went there for Sunday brunch. Besides the great food, there was also a live band"

  • "I came here on my date night and loved the place. They start you with mini cornbread that is to die for, me and my gf fought over them! I had the shrimp and grits and boy was it flavorful. I've never had anything like it! My gf had the oxtail and it was great the rice and peas used cream of coconut which was a change from the coconut milk I'm used too. We had a strawberry shortcake for dessert and it was the best one I've ever had. We had a few cocktails as well and I recommend the planter's punch. Overall it was a great evening. I look forward to returning for brunch."

  • "The food was not as good as I had heard about but the décor and ambience was wonderful. The owner is so charming, friendly, and just seems to have a great welcoming spirit!"

  • "We visited to celebrate our anniversary right before going to the movies. We were seated right away and our server was extremely attentive. We started with the Crab Cake which was just ok, and the Ceasar Wedge Salad with roasted beans that outshone the crab cake. We both loved our entrees. The fried chicken came with Mac and cheese and collard greens with just enough spice. My shrimp and grits were perfectly cooked and seasoned. Portions were small, but quality made up for quantity. We watched Alvin visit every table, and when he got to is we realized he is quite the character. My wife noticed and was impressed that the only colors in the room came from the art on the walls, which Alvin told us he painted himself. You must visit soon."

  • "The entire staff from the Hostess, to waitress, busboy & owner were very attentive & always were checking in on you. It made you feel special as if you had been there numereous times. But it was just our first & definitely not our last. Thanks!"

  • "A little too loud for any conversation. Most dishes were well made and delicious, but a few were just not good. Sticking with what they do best is probably better in the long run. The cocktails were AMAZING!!"

  • "We hadn't been to Alvin's since it opened in the new space. What an improvement! Bright and airy with nice outdoor seating too. We loved the piano music and have always enjoyed the art. The cocktails and dinner we ordered were terrific. I highly recommend this lovely restaurant for it's ambiance and food. The charm of its owner doesn't hurt either;-)"

  • "Being very familiar with the West Indian food scene in NY, I was astonished to find such an interesting spin on West Indian food in Westchester. Food was great. Alvin was a charm-he walked around from table to table to greet the guests. It was a sincere gesture. Rum punch was as authentic as you can find out of the Caribbean and the coconut martini was delish. Nice to see a fancy restaurant in New Rochelle that keeps it real as far as soul and flavor is concerned. Will go back skipping."

  • "We have been going to Alvin's since they opened. Food and service is always impeccable; professional and friendly. Can't say enough about this place. And Alvin and his wife are the consummate hosts. A New Rochelle gem. Have to try the duck, best I have ever had. And live music adds to the enjoyment."

  • "The food and service at Alvin and Friends was simple excellent. I definitely plan to dine there again! P.S. They serve the best Moscato wine."

  • "We are never disappointed. We dined al fresco and the food and the service was excellent. Alvin is a wonderful host. You feel like you are in his home."

  • "The ambiance was perfect. Service was great. The food was just ok. I had the curry crab chowder. Flavorful but too watery. Had the catfish n grits. While the fish wss good itcwas not grits served with the fish. The textute felt like polenta and it was too pastey and cheesy. That sauce with spinach and tomato peppers and onions is not a good combo on pokenta. Daughter had salmon. She enjoyed her food. Salad is also good"

  • "Our server was excellent. The only thing I will say that it took a very long time for the good to come out and I ordered shrimp and grits. The food was very good however the food was just warm not hot and that was the knit downside that I waited all this time for luke warm food. Other than that everything else was fine"

  • "Beautiful restaurant with great decor. Very good food and service. Wonderful owner/host. One of our favorite spots. We enjoy introducing friends to it."

  • "This our second time to the restuarant. The music in the front was very loud and not condusive to conversation. So we asked to sit away from it. Big mistake. We sat in the back room. The piano was lovely staff was nice but clueless. Food was good. Alvin is a great host. Ordered the ribs for an appetizer. Was told there were 6 or 7 ribs in a portion. 3 and a half ribs came out. When we explained that there were 4 of us and that was the reason we asked the waitress told us she was sorry. The real problem was that when we said one of the ribs was literally 2 inches big another waiter or manager came back out with the same 1/2 of rib and said that this was the portion and tried to explain that the ribs is a baby back rib."

  • "We always enjoy going to Alvin's, but now that he offers Friday Night Jazz in his 'Roscoe Room' with either cocktail or dinner service, we tend to combine the two. As always the food was great, but the entertainment was a fabulous bonus. On this occasion we were entertained by the legendary Nat Adderly, Jr Quartet featuring Jay Hoggart on vibes. It was such a treat! This is our second Friday Night Jazz, or as I call it NYC Jazz Supper Club, but in New Rochelle, our backyard!"

  • "My family and I visited this restaurant for brunch. We had dinner there before and loved it so we figured brunch would be just as good. Our waitress did not seem to know how the Saltfish Cook Up was prepared when questioned and was actually was very nasty when questioned again; a waiter nearby answered our question but was also found to be incorrect in his answer. Our question was finally answered by Alvin, the owner who by the way is a very pleasant and likable man. We have not written Alvin's off our favorite restaurants list but I don't think we will ever visit again for brunch."

  • "I recommend this place to anyone looking for a classy, upscale dinner date or night out with the family. You will see a diverse mix of patrons here. The staff is quite attentive and the owners will come by to say hello. The menu is mostly caribbean fare and the taste/quality is better than average. My date and I truly enjoyed our experience here and will be back."

  • "This restaurant is lovely -- the design, decor, fittings and layout are great. The ART, by Alvin is fabulous and creates a wonderful atmosphere. Service was very, very good, everyone was a pleasure to deal with. Unfortunately, and I hope it was an anomaly, the weekday lunch food was a terrible disappointment -- two stars is being generous. The crab cake and avocado sandwich was okay. Everything else was unsatisfactory. The fried chicken -- considered their specialty, mac 'n' cheese, mahi mahi, collard greens, both the entrees and sides were totally lacking in flavor, were dry, did not have even a pinch of salt to bring out any taste and were without ANY seasoning at all. I'd like to give brunch a try in case we hit a bad day."

  • "Inviting, relaxed atmosphere. Food was delicious. Had Alvin's Special cocktail, great taste. Smoked jerk pork, seafood creole linguine and fried chicken were well prepared and presented. Fried green tomato was good but only 2 of us liked the goat cheese. Will certainly return to try other dishes."

  • "I am not new to Alvin's, it has been my "go-to" place for special occasions even before it's recent move to its new location. A friendly atmosphere, good food, excellent service and a friendly proprietor makes it easy to recommend the place."

  • "Mother's Day dinner for 9 is usually hectic but this was really bad in terms of service and food served1. Cold apps. An item on the menu was switched w/o telling waitstaff so the guest got jerkin pork instead if pork loin 2. Waited 75 minutes for dinner 3. Peach cobbler was just ok as peaches were hard 4, bill $ 400 5. Expected better from a seasoned restaurant owner that's been in the area long term "

  • "The food was great. However, I have concern for people with seafood alligies. They fry everything in the same oil . Therefore, limited menue "

  • "I really wanted to take my mother out for Mother's Day, but as we all know it his crazy trying to get a table almost anywhere in the Bronx on a Sunday afternoon, Mother's Day Sunday is definitely no exception. I decided to check Open Table for a cozy spot that wasn't to far from home. I saw Alvin & Friends and was intriqued. The pictures online looked really good (both food and ambience) so I decided to make a reservation. When we arrived we were greated by a friendly hostess, a choice to dine in or outside, and a live jazz band. The waitstaff was really great and we enjoyed our meals. Mom and I plan to bring my father and stepmother for Father's Day next month. I also plan for a girls night. I highly reccommend Alvin & Friends."

  • "I absolutely love this place. New Rochelle definitely needed a spot like this. The atmosphere is prefect, the music is so right, the customer service is excellent, and the owner is so welcoming. It was perfect. "

  • "A month ago, we found the food surprisingly good (though expensive), the noise excessive (due to the jazz band), and the service excellent due to Alvin and his wife's attentiveness. 4 of us sat down last Saturday and waited 45 minutes for the waiter to take our order. Alvin came bye to say hello in the meanwhile, which was lovely, but after that greeting, there was no one to help us. We told the hostess, but to no avail. The food was equally as good as last time, except for the one striped bass dish which came out raw. 20 minutes after returning it, it came back. We could not converse due to the noise. We wanted to tell someone when we left, but no one was at the hostess stand."

  • "Went for a pre Mothers Day meal. The staff could not have been more accommodating. The food was interesting, not run of the mill, and good. A welcome addition to the area. "

  • "My boyfriend and I went out with some friends and we had a great time. The live jazz music was wonderful. I had the Jerk Rubbed Duck Breast and my boyfriend had the Grilled Mojito Rack of Lamb. Both were DELICIOUS! The coconut Martini is a MUST! The restaurant is adorned with beautiful, vibrant and colorful artwork made by the owner whom we met shortly after dinner. He was charming, welcoming and geuinely cared about our dining experience. We will definitely return!"

  • "I llove Alvin an dFriends. It has a New Yorkeyy vibe in that it is sophisticated yet it is also relaxed and casual. Alvin is the consummate, attentive host and the food is yummy. IT is great for dinner, lunch or brunch and you always leave happy."

  • " and it was enjoyable from beginning to end. The mini corn breads were divine, the salad plates were delicious and plentiful. Loved the sea bass and the red snapper! Our desserts were uniquely flavorful; a warm red velvet bread pudding served with ice cream and a coconut cheese cake, yum! This is a come back place. The jazz ensemble and Alvin's attentive personality provided the icing on a perfect evening. You must experience it!"
