Diner Reviews
  • "Very accomodating as the size of our party, grew shrank and grew, and some came to sit and not eat, which did not elicit any negatives. Everyone (11 of us) enjoyed our meals and our various adjustments (different sides, different breads) were readily accepted and correctly served. I had the catfish po-boy which was delicious. The bornbread was perfect, and others with fried chicken, cuban sandwiches, etc. all were very pleased. Thanks for all... Also very affordable!"

  • "Food was excellent, waiter took forever to take drink or dinner orders. Once the orders were placed, food was amazing. Busy night made it noisy but could still hear OK. Great bar staff."

  • "Alvin greeted us at the door. Very courteous and attentive staff, excellent food, music was not too loud. Will definitely go again."

  • "This was by far the best experience! We were sent to Alvin and Friends on a recommendation from a local college coach since we were visiting campus from out of town... he nailed it! It was delicious, great music, Alvin was a treat- made our dining very personal and did I already say, delicious!!??!! :)"

  • "The food was delicious. Staff was very attentive and the owner walked around the restaurant to greet everyone which I think sets this restaurant apart from others. The oysters & mac & cheese is awesome."

  • "It was Jazz Night at Alvin and Friends and the place was hopping! We had a great table for the 6 of us where we could hear the music but it not drown our our conversation. Fried Chicken was the favorite choice and grits were shared by all. I had the crabcake appetizer which was amazing - mostly crab (surprise!!). Alvin and his wife are the perfect hosts, stopping by our table more than once to check on us - we will go back - again and again!!!!!!!!!!!!"

  • "Alvin and Friends is my favorite restaurant in Westchester. Great food, wonderful ambience, live music but places to sit where you can still talk. A real find."

  • "We had a very good meal. Unfortunately the waiter forgot about us. When we asked about bread, we were told it was baking. However when we saw others then getting theirs, our waiter kind of forgot about ours. We had to ask twice for some more water. The waiter asked us if we had our desert, after we had finished with it and our plates had been cleared. The waiter never asked us if we wanted coffee or tea. Might would like a response since the food was really good and we would consider returning again."

  • "Alvin Clayton and his wife Gwen are delightful and always aim to please their customers. Great paintings (by Alvin) adorn the walls and the food is fantastic. Light jazz ensemble on Friday/Saturday compliments the atmosphere. Don't miss this gem!"

  • "This is a great place to fine, and the food is fabulous. My only criticism is that they don't allow any substitutions from the menue."

  • "It's restaurant week and I decided to try Alvin and Friends out for the first time. I've heard so many great things about this place and IT DID NOT FAIL!! The staff were welcoming, the ambiance was nice, I didn't want to leave with live music and DJ and the food....very good and tasty! Alvin even came to my table to introduce himself to me. A nice and humbled man! He mingled with the patrons and also helped out his staff, providing water to tables. I can't wait for the weather to fully bloom so I can enjoy their outside seating, while continuing to enjoy all this place has to offer."

  • "We live in the downtown New Rochelle area and are delighted to have such an easy and pleasant place to eat. The service is always friendly and welcoming. Alvin & Friends has a great approach to traditional Southern/Carribean foods--creative flare for the for the common fare. The atmosphere lends itself to our three-generation family or a more intimate meal for just two. I love the openness...and I always enjoy the original artwork by Alvin."

  • "Food was excellent and very nicely presented. The ambiance was just right for Sunday Brunch with live music playing in the background. I had the Shrimp over grits with a Creole sauce and my guest enjoyed Steak and fried eggs. Always a pleasure at Alvin & Friends from the food to the service to the ambiance to the art works. Of course always nice to see Alvin greeting everyone. Hope to be back very soon."

  • "Had dinner here on Friday. The atmosphere is excellent, staff very attentive and paintings are beautiful. The food however was disappointing. Caesar salad and shrimp with grits over spiced with Old Bay. Loe the signature rum punch. Would go again and try other entrees because I'm excited to have such a great vibe in Westchester."

  • "I've been to Alvin's & Friends several times to dine with friends and for private functions, and the place never disappoints. The food is FANTASTIC, the atmosphere is inviting and exciting. And Alvin and Gwen are gracious hosts who make you feel like they're entertaining at their home."

  • "I came to Alvin's because some friends of mine were playing in the band Andjam. My sister and I were treated like royalty from the time we entered until it was time for us to go. The food was superb, the service was impeccable and the music was fabulous. We are planning our next trip to New Rochelle to enjoy Alvin & Friends with more of our friends!!!"

  • "Alvin and Friends has become one of our all time favorite restaurants. People talk up Red Rooster but Alvin and Friends (as well as A Place 2 Go) blow that restaurant out of the water in terms of flavor, price, portion, and ambiance. Quality and freshness of the ingredients and knowing what to do with them make Alvin's a place where the food is wonderful. Paintings done by Alvin adorn the walls - bright, cheery, colorful and human. The fried chicken is one of the best we've ever eaten. Nothing in NYC can match it. The mac'n'cheese is one of my husband's favorite dishes. I love the cheese and grits. Fried catfish with their remoulade is outstanding. The pork sliders were spicy and savory. Now I'm hungry for some of their fried chicken."

  • "Alvin moved from a small restaurant to a bigger one around the corner and the experience got even better. We go there whenever we want to impress our friends or when we want to listen to some good live jazz and enjoy good food on the weekend. The food is excellent, the bartenders are good, the waiters and waitresses are very attentive and obliging, as well as the kitchen (in case some customization of a particular dish is desired). Best of all is the owner, Alvin, who is mingling with the guests most of the time and making the experience delightful. The restaurants music scene is enhanced by Alvin's personal collection of art he has displayed on the walls."

  • "Really good food, friendly service, great art on the walls. Just an exceptional experience. We'll be back."

  • "The food was good, but honestly not worth the price. We always love it when an owner comes by to schmooze and he was very friendly. The service was good too. The fried oysters appetizer was excellent!"

  • "Had an excellent restaurant experience here. The decor is very modern and trendy and feels more like a downtown manhattan spot. The food was an excellent take on southern cuisine. My only minor issue was with the portion size. Definitely do not attend hungry. The live jazz band combined with the bar area made this place rather lively. The one knock I have about our service was that I did wait for a refill of my water, but otherwise the service was prompt and attentive. Will definitely revisit and bring family and friends."

  • "Alvin and staff always make you feel very welcome. Because of my gluten sensitivity, tasty options can be limited for me but not at "Alvin and Friends". They have delicious menu items that are gluten free. The oxtail stew was the best I have ever had! We are never disappointed here."

  • "The food, beverages and service were great. There is even a jazz band Saturday nights. Alvin greets all the patrons and makes each one feel special. The restaurant is also diverse, i.e., white folks, African Americans, west indies folks. It's nice to see a mix. Dining here is a nice experience."

  • "Have been wanting to try for over two years. Alvin himself walks around and greets every person. Amazing! Restaurant is beautiful. Great live music is one of the the things that brought us there. Place was packed and alive on a Saturday night yet did not interfere with our dinner. Not loud at all. Perfect. Felt like I was in New York City. Only negative was service. Bartender had no personality for such a hip, lively place. Our waiter was slow and could not describe grits for us.... I would go back though and did tell two friends already"

  • "We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner with another couple last Thursday. Warm, inviting atmosphere and great food. Alvin is a consummate host and the staff knows when to help and when to leave you alone! I can't recommend it highly enough. Spread the word about this great new restaurant."

  • "Alvin is a gracious host and fantastic artist as seen in his work seen throughout the restaurant. His staff are friendly and super attentive I have never felt so taken care in my life. The live music transports you to another time similar to 1920s New Orleans and the dim lighting make it perfect for a intimate dinner with your significant other. The food is fabulous I had grits for the first time ever and fell in love! Corn bread and the Spanish coffee are to die for! I will definitely be back, it's definitely safe to say Alvin and Friends is by far the best restaurant that downtown New Rochelle has to offer."
    Dined on 2/21/2014
  • "My friends oxtail stew was like leather. My shrimps on grits was good. Service was inattentive. Very noisy and not because of the music. First time I went for Sunday lunch and it was very good. This time poor. Not sure I would go again. Next day I had lunch at Orsay on Upper East side. Service and food were superb. Alvin should go there to see how to improve his restaurant."

  • "Everytime my husband and I want to dine out we think of this place or that place, but we always wind up "going home". Alvin's has that combination of supurb dining and yet you feel so comfortable it's just like "going home"!"

  • "The presentation and unique taste of the food is exceptional. The southern & Caribbean flavors accentuates the atmosphere that permeates every selection on the menu....In addition, the staff, including the owners, the hostesses, the waiters; all make you feel comfortable and welcomed."
