First of all you can't find the place because it's set back from the street. A very small sign with no light on it. So if you've never been there you can pass by it with no problem which is what we did. It was very stuffy and over priced. I would never go back. The service was FABULOUS though. Very limited menu also. My husband wanted to leave as soon as we looked at the menu but decided to give it a chance.

Great food and service. And yet, while Alto was hardly full, we were seated at a tiny table in the Siberian attic ("But great view!" was the condescending and ridiculous remark from the hostess who seated me). Was I such an eye sore? Or is this what they do to Open Table users? Last time I ate here a few years ago (in the main dining floor, next to Bob Iger and Willow Bay at the next table), it was also nice but Friday's experience makes me never want to go back.

The food was spectacular and the wine list is as substantial as Proust's 'Remembrance of Things Past'. The service was impeccable. Overall dinner at Alto was a transcendent experience.

Had a very bad experience last evening (2/22/11). The service was extremely poor, the head waiter was rude to one of our guests (barked at him because his bag was on the floor and the waiter said, in a nasty tone of voice, "I can't serve if your bag is on the floor". One of the other waiters, who took a drink order, got the order wrong, and then when asked to fix it, got it wrong again. The food was not great and combined with the service, resulted in a poor dining experience.

We had the 7 course tasting menu with wine pairing. Each course was equal if not better than the previous. The sommelier was extremely knowledgeable and each selection paired perfectly with the course. For the first 3 courses, the service was a little uneven as we received our wine much earlier than the food was served so we ended up drinking much of it before we ate. But this got better as we got to our 4th course. The dining room ambiance was very romantic. We'll definitely go back.

Went for lunch on a Thursday afternoon - great food - excellent service - surprised at all the suits (more formal that I expected)! I had the poached shrimp & red snapper which were superb - my husband had the calimari (wonderful w/a little bite) and the hangar steak also excellent.

  • I booked in for Valentines
    OpenTable Diner Since 2011

I booked in for Valentines evening with my girlfriend. The food and service were excellent however i found that due to our table being at 10pm we were rushed to order and eat so that they could close the kitchen. With this in mind i wouldnt recommend eating late here. We also took the opportunity to take our own champagne due to $0 corkage after 9pm. The bottle was taken from us at arrival where it was prepared for us by the sommelier. Unfortunately, we were informed that it was corked (first time id ever had a corked wine). This was a shame as we had to them purchase something from the house list. All in all, we enjoyed the food and ambiance and would recommend this restaurant.

It wasn't the Italian food I would expect from the italian restaurant. The fishes and meat dishes were a bit overly cooked, but the pasta was good! I think the food doesn't justify the high price in this restaurant.

A horrible place to go for vegetarians. They do not make any accomodations, they actually told us that they would be flexible, ahead of time but once we were at the restaurant we barely had anything to eat. It was quite a dissapointing experience.

The evening was as nearly perfect as it gets. The food was delicious from beginning to end, the service friendly and courteous, and the sommelier, Levi, generous and knowledgeable. One admirable point: the restaurant has too much class to attempt to run up bills with bottles of mineral water that go on & on, following one's first request: we saw a number of bottles opened, but the final bill was moderate. Alto is our first choice for special dining in New York--again & again. The organization deserves high praise for its quality, elegance, and efficiency.

We had the prix fixe 4 course, and every course was delicious- I was particularly fond of the squab, and a bonus pasta course with uni and clam. My wife is still talking about the roasted pear sorbeto. Service was attentive without being obtrusive. Wine list is broad, with many choices even at my modest budget, and the wine staff top notch. OpenTable Diner Since 2008VIP
    Dined on 1/29/2011
As a whole the food was impeccable in both flavor and presentation. Portions were somewhat small, but that was expected with a more modern refined style of Italian cooking - no family style here. The meal was excellent, and even though the atmosphere was a little more subdued than I would have preferred, our table had a good time. This is the type of restaurant I would go to with my family or on a date before an uptown event. Read the full review at: http://www.eatthecityny.com/2011/02/alto-haute-italian-cuisine.html
