Diner Reviews
  • "Food was delicious. The service was above par for this caliber restaurant. The cost doesn't break the bank. And the view is one of the better views on Mt. Wash. Can't wait to go back there."

  • "Altius is a new restaurant and the remodeling of the facility was great! Add to that the unhindered view of the city, plus an outstanding menu, Altius represents a great addition to Pittsburgh's dining options. Menu was varied, nice choices; presentation outstanding. Waitress and staff very attentive. Nice conversation with owner at the end. I recommend this restaurant to all discriminating food lovers, in addition to those who love a great view."

  • "Altius was great. It was chic and elegant without feeling stuffy. Both my date and I had terrific meals and the view overlooking the city was breath-taking. I would definitely recommend visiting for spot for a special occasion or just a nice date night."

  • "Altius was a delightful restaurant with a notable cocktail list and wonderful choice of appetizers and entries. I had the vodka, sake and cucumber martini which I am adopting as my new favorite drink! Also had the kale salad which was very flavorful and the salmon was delicious. A nice find on my visit from Miami. The service was a bit slow"

  • "Loved the view and service was great, but most especially the meal was fantastic. Four of us dined and we each had A fantastic meal. The table favorIte was the pork chop--exceptional."

  • "Great new addition to Mt Washington's Grandview restaurants . The design is modern and beautiful, the view is breathtaking , and the food makes you want to come back . Great modern menu which is needed among some other neighboring restaurants that keep churning out boring old standards . Can't wait to go back. Staff was very friendly . Interesting fact- they share a transformer with the incline and the lights dim every time it makes a trip!"

  • "The food was outstanding but service was not for such an upscale restaurant. Our waiter only barely acted like he wanted to be there. He poorly described the dishes and showed no interest or enthusiasm. When he poured the wine, he served the men full glasses and the woman half or none, even though the women were clearly drinking as much or more than the men. One guy actually poured out some of his wine into the women's glasses it was so obviously not equal. I'll definitely go back because of the food and view, but will ask to pour our own wine."

  • "Everything was top notch, except I ordered my salmon medium rare and it was well done. It wasn't dry, but it was not medium rare."

  • "The meal was more like a tapas or sampling , I guess, because of the special pricing due to restaurant week. The place Has been remodeled and looks lovely, super view of Pittsburgh! The popcorn on the table is a different touch, but done very tastefully. The food was good also."

  • "From the time we walked in until we left, almost two hours later, everything was wonderful. Our waiter was terrific, answering our questions about the menu and offering his suggestions which turned out to be delicious We will definitely be back."

  • "Not only is the renovation fabulous, but the food, service impeccable. I wanted to show an out of town friend the view from Mt. Washington and had heard of this newly opened restaurant. We went late on a Friday and ended up having the Pittsburgh Restaurant Week tasting menu with the suggested wine pairings. The decor is a wonderfully calming and cozy blend of grays. The wine service was exceptional. The food fantastic. What stood out the most for me was the attention to detail and little touches that stood out and made the experience phenomenal. We can't wait to go back and I will take others for sure. I do wish the bar was larger, there were only maybe 6-8 seats and we didn't have much area to congregate while waiting for our table."

  • "We were there for restaurant week, so that may have affected our impression of the food. The bread was amazing and a highlight of the meal. The wine was good but expensive. We would definitely try this restaurant again for a special occasion given the beautiful location and to try the more extensive menu. Or perhaps just for appetizers and drinks at the bar."

  • "Too notch! One of the best restaurants in Pittsburgh hands down!"

  • "The portions were excellent along with the wine pairings. The dessert was very rich and decadent. Perfect for a dinner date or get together with friends. As a foodie I was impressed."

  • "My husband and I went during Pittsburgh Restaurant Week. I had the prix fixe menu, which was very good. Much better than the old Georgetown Inn."

  • "This was our first visit. We took out of town guests to enjoy the view and to try the food at Altius. We thought that the food was generally very good although a few of the extras, like to little glass of spicy tomato soup, missed. More importantly, we wanted to have a drink before dinner and to sit around and enjoy that and the view before getting into dinner. The wait staff seemed to be programmed to work at a particular pace that was not consistent with the pace we were setting. I had to ask them to slow down and not rush things on two occasions. But these are minor problems. We really enjoyed the restaurant and it was a prefect setting for our dinner with out-of-town friends,"

  • "Wonderful new restaurant on Mt Washington with lots of potential. Vibrant bar with nice array of interesting drinks. The view is spectacular as always but the new hip decor is equally fantastic! The food is on tract to be a very good restaurant; the service had some growing pains. Recently had dinner with a dear friend there and had a wonderful time. She had the gazpachio and the pork chop which were both fantastic! I had the bison tartare which was good but too many elements on the plate. My black cod was delicious but a bit under seasoned. The breads and deserts were out of this world! Unfortunately, the wine pairings did not work at all for me and did not highlight the food. Will definitely go back!"

  • "We went for restaurant week. The food was divine. There were lots of local and seasonal ingredients blended in unique ways. I especially enjoyed the half-baked brownie. They were served with three of the most delicious cherries I have even tasted. The service was attentive but not intrusive. We had a spectacular view of the Point on a perfectly clear evening, watching the city slowly light up and become all glittery. It was a truly perfect experience."

  • "This was a wonderful experience from beginning to end, from the amuse bouche to the last bite of 'half-baked' brownie. Went for restaurant week and would love to go back to experience the rest of their menu and cocktail list. Each of the dishes showed great vision and technique. It's good to know that the Mt. Washington cliff side restaurants are finally picking up their game. For a long time, there was a big gap between what you paid (usually high) and what you felt like you got (usually mediocre). The service was excellent and as views go, unbelievable. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for a wonderful dining experience."

  • "My sister and I tried Altius during Pittsburgh's Restaurant Week. The newly renovated space has a nice contemporary vibe. As for the food, everything we tried was delicious. We both had the squash risotto as an appetizer. My sister had the lamb for her entree and I had the cod, which was so tender it practically melted in my mouth. In addition to the food we ordered, the restaurant gave us complimentary popcorn, fresh baked bread, and an amuse-bouche--not sure if this is there standard practice, but if it is, you will definitely go home full! To top it off, we had grate view of the city as we dined. It's not cheap, but I would definitely recommend for a special occasion!"

  • "We had a very good dinner at Altius. The interior is sleek and trendy with an amazing view! I had the gnocchi and my husband had the salmon; both were very good. He also had the charcuterie plate and they source everything locally. The honey was very good on that dish as was my scallop appetizer."

  • "This is a new restaurant that is in the space that use to house the Georgetown inn. They have done a fantastic job renovating the space. the view is still great but in addition the food is exceptional and the service is impeccable. Everyone from valet parker to wine steward really seemed to care that we have a great time. Because of this we did have a great time and will return."

  • "First time visit for three foodies and two wine drinkers. No complaints from any one at the table- rare, rare , rere."

  • "Mount Washington's dining scene is generally known for two things: the billion-dollar view of Downtown Pittsburgh and the exorbitant prices attached to dining with that view as your backdrop. Well, Altius ups the ante by being inventive from the kitchen, restrained in its decor (letting the view do all the talking), and providing a wonderful evening out. My partner and I visited for the kick-off of Pittsburgh Restaurant Week and were not disappointed by the three-course menu and accompanying wine parings. We've been raving about Altius to our friends and will most definitely be back. Don't let location fool you... once inside, the menu, cocktails, presentation and service are really top-notch and not using the location as a crutch."

  • "Dined here for our anniversary during restaurant week. Ordered from the Restaurant Week menu so offerings were limited but price was very reasonable. Included the wine pairing option. Several complimentary offerings from the chef which we really enjoyed. The focaccia was outstanding. The sommelier did a great job with the wine pairing though neither of us are excited about dessert wines and would have preferred to just have coffee with our dessert. We went on a week night so we were not bothered by noise as others have mentioned. Great view of the city. Gave us a complimentary home baked cookie to take home...really nice touch! Would recommend this restaurant."

  • "So much attention to detail and perfection in the food, the service, and the ambiance. Gorgeous dining space with a spectacular view. The only modern dining spot in the area, so chic. J'adore"

  • "This was our second visit and it was very good. If you dislike crowds, go on a night other than the weekend. The decor, the view and the excellent food make this spot a winner! We requested a table close to the windows and our request was granted with one of the best tables in the house. The service was especially good this time. We will return."

  • "Finally, a dinning experience worthy of the price! With all of the tired, boring, and unchanging menus in Mt. Washington, Altius is a breath of fresh air. From the décor, the view, exceptional service, and outstanding meal ingredients and preparations, this restaurant is a cut above the rest. If we had to pick one area of concern, it would be the increasing noise level as the crowd multiplies. That being said, we will definitely return and highly recommend Altius to others."

  • "This place has improved 100% over the previous owner. The decor, the food, the wine list. Everything was great. Of course you cannot beat the view. Now it is great to have both - great viiew and great restaurant."

  • "Celebrated a birthday with family and friends. Altius is sleek, friendly, upscale-vastly different from the former occupant of the choice spot on the Mount. The dining experience was exceptional and the service impeccable. They were not made aware of the birthday prior to our arrival but delivered a beautiful birthday dessert. We had a corner table on the upper level and our city was stunning from that vantage point. Special cocktails are a must. GO!"

  • "Everything at Altius was thoughtful and well-executed...down to minute detail. Our table was ready when we arrived and we were able to snag a window table with the fantastic Pittsburgh skylilne view. The service was professional and not overbearing. In fact, we noted that once our food arrived, we weren't constantly bothered by, "How's the food?" Because the food was amazing and they know it! The food is local and sustainably (humanely) raised. And it literally melted in my mouth. Small details like a complimentary amuse-bouche, truffle oil popcorn, warm bread, a sommelier...all added to the ambiance. I highly recommend the charcuterie board. It was like nothing I'd ever had. Kudos to the chef and the management."

  • "I would recommend for those who want a good (although expensive) meal. The food was delicious with inventive pairings of protein and sides However, Altius has several tables with no view. It seems like at least some of the other Mt. Wash restaurants have a tiered level, so even if you are not at the window, you can see the view. It was very loud, so conversation was limited. Since our out-of-town guests had not seen the city yet,we were anxious to go out on Grandview. After the check was presented, we sat for at least 15 -20 minutes with the credit card sitting on the check nursing the dregs of our coffee. Therefore, if you are going for food - good. If you want to show off the view, do business or to catch up talking - I'd go elsewhere!"

  • "Was with my wife and a friend for dinner. I enjoyed my meal, which consisted of green tomato gazpacho, charcuterie plate and duck with goose liver and cherry sauces. The duck and bread selections were excellent. A couple of points however, my entree had way to much duck and polenta as the side. I would cut it back a little. My wife had chicken which arrived dry. I credit the restaurant for trying to redo a bad dish; the best solution would have been to ask if she wanted anything different and get it to her pronto. We were very fortunate to have a wonderful view while there and the fireworks from the Rivers Casino really made for an enjoyable evening. Noise level on the second floor was a bit much for me. I will try it again!"

  • "Upscale, creative, locally sourced and highest quality. Best pork chop anywhere. My pet peeve : uncomfortable chairs at swanky places. These chairs were chosen with care and are VERY comfortable. World class view."
