A word from AltaMare

Altamare - a hidden “locals only” secret in Sobe - is a fusion between owner Claudio Giordano’s two passions: Italian cuisine and fishing. These aspects come together in a menu that showcases the best catches from local fishing boats intermingled with classic Italian dishes.

Our décor reflects South Beach style however, the food is anything but pretentious. The likes of wahoo crudo; fresh oysters; short rib lasagnette; and beautifully presented fresh fish are just a few items that keep locals coming back.

We are located on the Western end of Lincoln road mall, just off the beaten path. Stray from the overly-commercial glamorized retail stores and tourist trap eateries, with a short hop across Alton Road to discover this local favorite.

Diner Reviews
  • "I am in Miami often. Many restaurants are over rated. Fortunately, this is not. The food is prepared very well. Fresh fish and oysters. We will be back."

  • "Very lovely experience. The quality of the food was great and the service was outstanding. The only thing that I'd improve is that I ordered the truffle sea bass and the portion was super small for a $38 plate. I left the restaurant a little bit hungry."

  • "Excellent appetizers and salads. Main dishes variable. New interior."

  • "I regret not going more often to AltaMare...the food is great, the service is great, the ambiance is great...i only wish that they kept the open kitchen after the renovations but otherwise, top notch."

  • "I must admit, we are partial to Altamare, as we enjoy seafood and it is so convenient (on Lincoln Road) in South Beach. But, more than anything else, they bring an endless supply of interesting varieties of fresh fish prepared in innovative ways."

  • "My wife & I have eaten at Altamare several times over the past year and always enjoyed excellent food in more-than-pleasant surroundings. A recent remodeling has made the restaurant look and feel like a chain seafood joint--mistake! Also, our dinner was WAY below par, with dry, tasteless salmon and burned asparagus."

  • "We were optimistic based on recomendations from hotel and service from bar, but it was not what we expected from there... Food was average and dessert was not "fresh." I would definitely recommend taking your chances down on Lincoln if you're alreAdy in the area."

  • "Great wait staff - area for improvement hostess - given a table then asked to move as it was reserved for other patron who did not arrive until we were leaving. Food was excellent and head waiter very attentive recommendations spot on. Would definitely recommend."

  • "We returned to AltaMare after being away for a couple months but were warmly greeted as regulars and we given two tables pushed together for a two top so we could sit side by side on the bench and watch the room. The food was wonderful again from the appetizer ceviche grouper to the chocolate filled chocolate cake. Our server was outstanding allowing us to pace our course deliveries to our liking."

  • "We keep coming back to AltaMare for the quality of their seafood. The seafood terracotta is wonderful and we enjoy the constant variety of their ever-changing menu reflecting what is fresh each day."

  • "A slow Friday night so service was very good as well as food preparation. The trend is for smaller portions at higher prices at Alta Mare, except the "fish of the day" is he bargain!"

  • "My friend and I had an awesome dinner here last Thursday. It was my first visit despite living here for 12 years. We had the mussel starter and we devoured it! And we both had different pasta dishes for our main course. We loved it! Only downside was that the table for two is very small. Once you have the wine glass, starters, bread and main course, it's full and it's very close to the next table. A large family group was seated next to us and we had to tone down our conversation. On the night we dined, there were fruit flies or flies buzzing around our table. Was very annoying. Overall, I highly recommend it for the food. :-D"

  • "Great food! The octopus appetizer was delicious, as everything else we ordered. A bit overpriced, and very hot inside the restaurant. The dining room was full, great atmosphere, but need to repair AC!"

  • "Here, the outside, sidewalk dining is terrific, because it's located away from the most congested sections of Lincoln plaza. There are plenty of beautiful and interesting people to watch, while you enjoy the flavorful seafood and mediterranean delicacies. "

  • "Locals know what a treasure Alta Mare is. The owner and staff are always welcoming and attentive. The food is consistently very good. I always sit at the bar and it is very easy to have a conversation, as the noise level is moderate. Kobe and wahoo fish are excellent. "

  • "this is one of my favorite restaurant, however the selection I had just wasn't one of my favorites, it was good. It was just fish, yellow fin I believe that was in a light butter sauce, it was good and healthy. I guess I was in the mood for a more sinful dish."

  • "We were constantly flagging down inattentive waiters. Brought out wrong main for me even though an alternative "set up" was offered by the server using the same fish, which I chose. I didn't appreciate seeing him gesturing towards me while scolding the cook, nor did I like it when he threw the cook under the bus while he apologized to me. Wrong dessert brought out. Had to flag down servers THREE separate times, one to order dessert, another to take back wrong dessert and then to get the bill. Everyone was too busy running around and manic to give us proper service even though the three of us ordered three courses plus multiple drinks. Food was excellent but not good service for the price."

  • "We find ourselves back at AltaMare on a regular basis. More often than not, one of us gets the seafood terracotta. But, I really enjoy the wahoo -- not easy to find, but a wonderful alternative to Tuna, similar texture but white with a lighter taste."

  • "This is a great find on Lincoln Road. The food is great and if you eat indoors it is a quiet oasis amid the craziness on Lincoln Road. Plus the menu is varied and the meat is great."

  • "Shocked they were known for seafood. The mussels, oysters and clams didn't taste fresh. I had the terra cotta seafood pot and the broth was absolutely flavorless. Would never go there for food again. The service was very good."

  • "Excellent menu, a lot of choice but not a lot of fluff - everything looked great. Service was excellent and accommodating, would recommend to anyone."

  • "I've ate at AltaMare several years ago and had a god experience. This time was much different. Food was just ok- to poorly prepared. Our fresh mozzarella salad had no balsamic- which I thought was very odd. I had Brussels sprouts - which were served with a slightly warmed pancetta. Pancetta should be crisp! My red snapper was ok- but covered with an odd concoction red sauce. Did nothing for the flavor. Service, like everywhere in Miami, was poor.y"

  • "Good food, mediterranen taste for a fantastic fresh Golden Crab. Linguine cooked " al dente " as Italians do Good service Right the price."

  • "This is a casual but elegant solid restaurant. The atmosphere is sophisticated, not contrived, and the menu is interesting, authentic and changing. It is my "go to" place for an easy and dependably excellent dinner where I can actually speak with others at the table."

  • "We ate outside on a Sunday night. The noise level was low, but inside it was more energetic. The service was very friendly and attentive. One of the better margaritas in South Beach. My wife had the tilefish and loved every bite of it. I had a fish stew that was tomato based with a generous amount of shell fish in it. It was superb. This place is a bit off the beaten track in South Beach but definitely worth the visit. They have valet parking for which there is a charge, but given the dearth of parking places in SB, its a nice convenience,"

  • "Grouper seviche outstanding. Ditto passionfruit ginger martini; had to have two. Octopus with chorizo and farro superb. Husband had red deer tenderloin which was amazing as well. 4 leches dessert at the end was divine. Our fourth visit to Altamar. Consistenlty good. Owner is usually there, another good sign!"

  • "My companion tells me she often sees the Latin celebrities when we are dining here. With the food, it comes as no surprise. They have great seafood, the service is excellent."

  • "I reviewed the menu online and thought it had some interesting and unique dishes. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. Even though the restaurant was less than half full, the waiter kept rushing us. This was our 1st time there so we needed to review the menu, but he kept coming back to take our order. Everything was fast there from the time you were seated to receiving the check. I felt they just wanted to get you out if there. As for the food, the grouper fish cakes were served cold. The portions were small especially the skirt steak."

  • "I am a South Beach local that dines out very frequently. I was looking for a new menú to enjoy, and AltaMare did not disappoint! Unique seafood offerings had my tastebuds awake and almost had me in butterflies waiting 2 see what my server was going 2 put in front of me next. I gave up my table reservation 2 sit at AltaMare' s spacious bar. Thomas, our knowledgeable and attentive bartender, made excellent recommendation in food and then paired them perfectly with delicious wine and spirit."

  • "Valentine's night. We arrived at 9.15pm, time of our reservation. They offered us a table outside, and I think that was a great mistake. Once you're sitting outside, the details of a good restaurant dissolves. Too mucho noise, too much "south beach", but I repeat, no more class A service. 10 minutes after ordering drinks, I had to ask again for them. Tables so small that two plates and some bread definitely...don't fit. Octopus carpaccio...too much olive oil and too cold, so too many fluids in the plate (water and oil). Pan seared Hog was really good, and the risotto was good (not as good as the hog, but it was ok) Having said this, I think if there is a next time, definitely, I will try inside."

  • "Great place, not many vegetarian options ended up ordering a bunch of sides (sautéed mushrooms, oven baked cauliflower and steamed bok choy), none if which were worth mentioning. My date was happy w her Thai mussels and octopus. The wine was brought out and they didn't offer to taste it before pouring which was odd. Our server Daniel was outstanding. Eating outside was lovely and the place has a great energy, I recommend a visit but if you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or any other dietary restriction avoid."

  • "My husband and I went friday night, we live in sobe Got 3 apetizers, calamari carpaccio, grilled calamari and cobia cevice. Then we shared the palombo fish and we got a heavenly kind of dulce de lece. The food was very fresh, light and perfectly done, we got 2 bottle of champagne and had the best time. The italian waiter was very cool and attentive as well, always ready available and nice. Definetly ona if the best rest in south beach."

  • "Alta Mare was once a favorite spot with excellent food and service. While the service remains good, the food has now dropped considerably. Our fish entrees were overlooked and of no distinction. The sides were similar to what one would expect in a cafeteria. Not sure what happened but Alta Mare is off the list for us. Too bad."
