Diner Reviews
  • "This is a great find on Lincoln Road. The food is great and if you eat indoors it is a quiet oasis amid the craziness on Lincoln Road. Plus the menu is varied and the meat is great."

  • "Shocked they were known for seafood. The mussels, oysters and clams didn't taste fresh. I had the terra cotta seafood pot and the broth was absolutely flavorless. Would never go there for food again. The service was very good."

  • "Excellent menu, a lot of choice but not a lot of fluff - everything looked great. Service was excellent and accommodating, would recommend to anyone."

  • "I've ate at AltaMare several years ago and had a god experience. This time was much different. Food was just ok- to poorly prepared. Our fresh mozzarella salad had no balsamic- which I thought was very odd. I had Brussels sprouts - which were served with a slightly warmed pancetta. Pancetta should be crisp! My red snapper was ok- but covered with an odd concoction red sauce. Did nothing for the flavor. Service, like everywhere in Miami, was poor.y"

  • "Good food, mediterranen taste for a fantastic fresh Golden Crab. Linguine cooked " al dente " as Italians do Good service Right the price."

  • "This is a casual but elegant solid restaurant. The atmosphere is sophisticated, not contrived, and the menu is interesting, authentic and changing. It is my "go to" place for an easy and dependably excellent dinner where I can actually speak with others at the table."

  • "We ate outside on a Sunday night. The noise level was low, but inside it was more energetic. The service was very friendly and attentive. One of the better margaritas in South Beach. My wife had the tilefish and loved every bite of it. I had a fish stew that was tomato based with a generous amount of shell fish in it. It was superb. This place is a bit off the beaten track in South Beach but definitely worth the visit. They have valet parking for which there is a charge, but given the dearth of parking places in SB, its a nice convenience,"

  • "My companion tells me she often sees the Latin celebrities when we are dining here. With the food, it comes as no surprise. They have great seafood, the service is excellent."

  • "Grouper seviche outstanding. Ditto passionfruit ginger martini; had to have two. Octopus with chorizo and farro superb. Husband had red deer tenderloin which was amazing as well. 4 leches dessert at the end was divine. Our fourth visit to Altamar. Consistenlty good. Owner is usually there, another good sign!"

  • "I reviewed the menu online and thought it had some interesting and unique dishes. When we arrived, we were seated immediately. Even though the restaurant was less than half full, the waiter kept rushing us. This was our 1st time there so we needed to review the menu, but he kept coming back to take our order. Everything was fast there from the time you were seated to receiving the check. I felt they just wanted to get you out if there. As for the food, the grouper fish cakes were served cold. The portions were small especially the skirt steak."

  • "I am a South Beach local that dines out very frequently. I was looking for a new menú to enjoy, and AltaMare did not disappoint! Unique seafood offerings had my tastebuds awake and almost had me in butterflies waiting 2 see what my server was going 2 put in front of me next. I gave up my table reservation 2 sit at AltaMare' s spacious bar. Thomas, our knowledgeable and attentive bartender, made excellent recommendation in food and then paired them perfectly with delicious wine and spirit."

  • "Valentine's night. We arrived at 9.15pm, time of our reservation. They offered us a table outside, and I think that was a great mistake. Once you're sitting outside, the details of a good restaurant dissolves. Too mucho noise, too much "south beach", but I repeat, no more class A service. 10 minutes after ordering drinks, I had to ask again for them. Tables so small that two plates and some bread definitely...don't fit. Octopus carpaccio...too much olive oil and too cold, so too many fluids in the plate (water and oil). Pan seared Hog was really good, and the risotto was good (not as good as the hog, but it was ok) Having said this, I think if there is a next time, definitely, I will try inside."

  • "Great place, not many vegetarian options ended up ordering a bunch of sides (sautéed mushrooms, oven baked cauliflower and steamed bok choy), none if which were worth mentioning. My date was happy w her Thai mussels and octopus. The wine was brought out and they didn't offer to taste it before pouring which was odd. Our server Daniel was outstanding. Eating outside was lovely and the place has a great energy, I recommend a visit but if you are vegan, vegetarian, gluten free or any other dietary restriction avoid."

  • "Food was good. I had a pan-fried red snapper that was very good. Waiter was beyond attentive. Seemed like he was rushing us at every turn."

  • "My husband and I went friday night, we live in sobe Got 3 apetizers, calamari carpaccio, grilled calamari and cobia cevice. Then we shared the palombo fish and we got a heavenly kind of dulce de lece. The food was very fresh, light and perfectly done, we got 2 bottle of champagne and had the best time. The italian waiter was very cool and attentive as well, always ready available and nice. Definetly ona if the best rest in south beach."

  • "Alta Mare was once a favorite spot with excellent food and service. While the service remains good, the food has now dropped considerably. Our fish entrees were overlooked and of no distinction. The sides were similar to what one would expect in a cafeteria. Not sure what happened but Alta Mare is off the list for us. Too bad."

  • "This restaurant sits just outside the Lincoln Mall area. Outdoor seating is great. The best thing on the menu is the fried yellow tail snapper. This isn't your typical fried fish. It's very lightly floured. No batter. They serve the whole fish deep fried. It was crispy, piping hot and melt in your mouth good. Highly recommended."

  • "Just down towards the end of Lincoln Road Mall, so there is less traffic, but makes for good outdoor dining without a lot of passing crowd noise. Good variety of fish selection and wine selection too. The raw appetizer options were delicious as well as the desserts. Heaters out on a chilly night made it very comfortable."

  • "Great place at great location just off the LIncoln Rd mall. Lots to look at before or after dinner- build up appetite or walk off a full meal. My grouper was excellent and uniquely prepared. My friends were not as adventurous, but equally happy with non-fish meals."

  • "After the review of Alta Mare in NYT, I guess I was expecting quality on the level of restaurants in SAn Francisco or NYC. Our family tried 4 different entrees and they were all okay but not as good as what we get here in Durham, NC! IN general, Miami Beach restaurants don't measure up (maybe downtown is a different story?). The prices, however, are equal to those in NYC or CHicago, with $38 entrees not at all unusual. I'm beginning to think that when in Miami Beach, I should aim lower and eat at low-cost ethnic dives, rather than elegant bistros like Alta Mare. The ropa de vieja I had in the airport cafeteria was pretty good!"

  • "Yes, there were lots of couples there and lots of glasses of fizzy, but we were there for an intimate dinner. All were accommodated. We had our intimate New Year's dinner -- no price fix, just a great selection of seafood with attentive services and a timely service from the kitchen. We even tasted a new variety of fish."

  • "I found the AltaMare well situated with a few parking options nearby. The staff were always well mannered and friendly, we encountered about 5 staff members from the moment we arrived to the time we left. The culinary standard was good to very good, but there were some simple mistakes before the first course delivery that could have been avoided if they put a little more thought into it...but in there defense, it was New Years Eve and quite busy. The prices were quite reasonable, especially for the overall experience, so I would definitely consider dining there again."

  • "Presentation and flavor outstanding on all fish we ordered. Even on Mew Year's Eve, service and food were both outstanding. Drinks were strong, not typical measured shots."

  • "I live in South Beach, and sometimes friends ask me where they should eat. If they enjoy seafood, I always send them to AltaMare. We go frequently, yet they often introduce us to new varieties of fish. The service is attentive, yet they know how to just leave a guest alone to enjoy a leisurely meal."
    Dined on 12/23/2013
  • "Altamare serves the freshest, most carefully prepared fish in South Beach, complimented by superb pastas and a good, though not inexpensive, wine list. The service is invariably careful and experienced, and dining outside on the sidewalk is pleasant, not chaotic like Lincoln Road restaurants east of Alton. In colder or too hot weather, the indoor seating is attractive and comfortable, looking at an open kitchen. A great place."

  • "the food was good and showed a little imagination in the creation of the dish but in general prices on the items seemed to be at least 50% greater than equivalently or comparable type of restaurant. I won't go back!"

  • "Very disappointing! New waitperson (1st night). . .everything confused, incorrect. Mostly a new staff! Where was the owner?"
    Dined on 12/5/2013
  • "I have eaten here a number of times in the past and the sea food has always been very fresh and well prepared which is still the case; however, every other item we ordered was over salted. We sent one salad back and the replacement was just as bad. You lost a customer"

  • "One of the best seafood restaurants in South Florida serving fresh local fish. Where else can you order roasted grouper throats or grilled cobia collars as an appetizer,,,both of which are unusual and delicious. If in the Lincoln Road Sobe area; do not miss."

  • "We consider AltaMare our local favorite for Seafood. They often have varieties of fish that we've never before tasted, but we come back to the terra-cotta seafood pot as our favorite seafood dish."
