  • "I really did not enjoy my meal at Alta. The place is extremely expensive probably targeting the Twitter/Square crowd. Not one dish stood out - the asparagus salad was the best thing I ate and still nothing special. The wine was good."

  • "The food was great and the waiter was very friendly. The only downside is that my seat was right by the door and cold wind blew in my face. The wind was to the point where we had to use glasses of water as paperweights for the menus. I half jokingly asked the waiter for a free drink to make up for the uncomfortable table. He was nice, but merely said "wish I could' instead of making it happen. If it weren't for the cold and wind, Alta would have gotten 5 stars!"

  • "I've been 3 times to this restaurant for convenience sake and found the food mostly terrific. The service was lacking all 3 times. Each time i waited at least 10 minutes to be greeted by the wait person then another 20 minutes to get a cocktail. The first time the first course arrived before the cocktail! and I had to flag down a runner to follow thru. The food was mostly terrific but also all 3 times the music was blasting with hard rock music made it impossible to speak without being annoyed. i don't understand why a restaurant would choose such abrasive ambience. In the end I did return twice more to give it a chance, but was the same each time. The bill each time was quite expensive considering the obstacles."

  • "With Twitter and others kicking off a gentrification on Market, we had to visit Alta which is just across the street from Twitter HQ. We parked by the city hall and walked (with a little trepidation) through streets 'til market (a year more of gentrification will help). Alta is one of the new shiny places changing the store fronts on Market. When you walk it, it has that hipster ambiance. Casual but high quality. They made some good design choices to make it friendly yet different. Food was small plates and good quality though a bit pricey for the combination but not surprising. We'd probably go back there again but not right away unless we are going to an event."

  • "Food and cocktails were outstanding. However, for a Daniel Patterson restaurant, service was poor. We sat at the bar, our bartender never once checked in on us to ask if everything was good during out meal. Also, we had reservations, but the host did not let us know how long the wait would be for our table, so we ended up sitting at the bar instead since there were open seats. I thought it was strange that they brought out our soup before the oysters we ordered too. Overall, loved the food, drinks and ambience, but since SF has so many amazing restaurants I would not go out of mh way to go there again."

  • "And where's the service? Entrees came before our drinks. Two of us got the cod ($20). Food was good but plating was sloppy: one plate had all the good fish slices but hardly any broccoli, and vice versa. Our server didn't check on us during the meal. We had to prompt him about dessert. Pricey for lunch: $35 each with tax and tip for 2entrées, one soup-salad combo, 3 non-alchy drinks and 2 desserts."

  • "Overall a swell experience at dinner here on Saturday night. Love the casual city vibe the restaurant has. Couple of things that were a little off. Our service timing felt extremely rushed initially, first course came out almost as soon as our drinks touched down at the table. Also thought that the dishes, whose flavors are complex and interesting, could use a bit more description from the server when that are brought to the table."

  • "The menu here was highly creative. The beef tendon puffs were not at all what we expected but were wonderful... more a (not greasy, just rich) pork-rind like item instead of a puff. Choice of hen-o-the-woods mushroom in one dish. Trotters were boned so all you had were the little wonerful bits of meat and none of the work. Chicory salad was dressed with a great light vinagrette with some unusual mild acid (forgot to ask what with all the notable plates coming next). Overall a great time."

  • "Alta CA excites. After a warm reception upon arrival, we were seated immediately, even though we were 20 minutes early. That gave us plenty of time to work slowly through the creative menu. We tried about 9 dishes, all of which were a bit of a twist on what we expected. It's a menu you want one of everything,including all the versions of soft serve ice cream, swirled with flavors from one's childhood. One suggestion is that they realty should serve the cute little bialys with the gently favored corned beef 'cause they really do go together. We loved everything we ate."

  • "Food was good, Service excellent. We got there at noon and it was empty, when we left it was packed, so I recommend going earlier rather than later. I had the burger. It was a little small and messy, but delicious. The potato chips were definitely home made but not as yummy as most home made chips I've had. My lunch mates had the pork trotter and pastrami sandwich. I wish I had gone for the trotter, the whole thing just looked perfect, my friend loved it. I'm not a big fan of brussell sprouts but even they looked good. The slow egg on top was perfectly cooked. Alta seems most lauded for the beef tendons which did not disappoint. I only wish he had gone after work instead for lunch, as I am quite certain their cocktails are delicious too."

  • "This is my 3rd time eating at Alta CA. The 1st 2 were lunch and I thought they were so so. A friend of mine insists that the dinner menu was better, all I can say it was larger but not more interesting. The beef tendon puff are tasty, but they do stick between your teeth. I did have them twice as I liked them so much, but a 4505 Chicharone is puffy and melts nicely. The Deviled Eggs have been constant and very nice. This I have ordered 3 times. Excellent Pomegranate Margaritas. The burgers are good, but many places have burgers so if you want a burger please do try theirs it is one of the better one. Then the mains - Pork Shoulder and Beef something neither a reason to come back. There were no vegetable or side on the menu."

  • "On entering the restaurant the overall design especially the free-standing liquor storage was visually impressive and unpretentious. I was there for lunch and it was only lightly to moderately busy and, therefore, the atmosphere was comfortable. Although I prefer not be perched on a stool, the stool was made comfortable with a foot rest. The menu was very different but easily accessible. We ordered the beef tendon puffs, the chick pea and oxtail fritters, the pastrami sandwich, the soft chocolate ice cream with caramel and the chocolate chip cookies. The eating experience felt low key and welcomed and the offerings unusual with subtle excitement."

  • "Can it live up to the hype post opening buzz? Well, we finally got our lunch reservation for President's Day. We were a party of three and tried a variety of items on the menu. Food was tasty — good balance of flavors and texture. Drinks (non-alchol), food and desert total average around $30 per person. Good value for the quality of food and service."

  • "I live near here and have been wanting to drop in since before the doors opened. I must admit I was more than a bit unimpressed. The person serving our table could not have been nicer but I would be surprised if he had more than a few hours total waiting experience under his belt -- ever. He was very green and nervous. In contrast, I ate at the good but less trendy Canela Bistro the next night and the difference in flowing, easy service could not have been more stark. The food was fine at Alta but nothing really to write home about. My friend had the porridge (which Michael Bauer liked) and we all agreed it was just okay. My smoked trout bialys were just okay. They need to tighten the food and raise the bar on staffing."

  • "First time at Alta and a little disappointing given the pedigree of the owners. Food was good but not great. Had about 6 dishes and there wasn't one that wowed us. Like the room, casual crowd and a good upgrade to that neighborhood. Service was okay and if you order cocktails be prepared to wait and wait some more. No reason to go back unless you live within walking distance. No dish that I said I want to come back for this."

  • "Alta CA is a Daniel Patterson resto, he of COI, and PLUM fame -- and he is quite the hot chef of the moment. I generally dislike tasting menus, preferring the best ingredients, well prepared, and any unexpected taste or flare is incidental. That's just what I got at Alta! Very good food and VERY professional service. Super lively room with a crowd that, I admit, did not seem like it was full of locals. Maybe there was a convetion of New Yorkers or Angelinos in town? Anyhow... it was fantastic. The cocktail list was especially great. I reccommend this place -- it's like slipping into a huge, swank private party that's hidden in plain sight!"

  • "Loved it. A total taste sensation. Started w the seared squid w greens, avocado, grapefruit, and almonds, which was a great combination of tastes and textures. Paired with an excellent Morey Aligote. For the main, had the pork trotter, which was a hearty dish of delicious tastes and textures. For dessert, I had the Chocolate ice cream with chili and lime, and it, too, was fantastic. My server was outstanding - articulate, attentive, helpful, and passionate about the menu. Finally, I thought the atmosphere was great, with the wine and spirits wall, the bar, and the lighting particularly well done. Will definitely visit again. Just make sure to book early, as it seems the prime slots go quickly."

  • "Lots of great energy entering, being greeted and such, but then felt a bit on our own. Service was very friendly but haphazard & duck confit was tough. The deviled eggs were really nice however. Overall an interesting menu that works for me but I will be limited on who to bring due to the menu being somewhat unapproachable. It's not as far as some, but unless you are a foodie it will be kind of hard. Alta is a nice space in a section of Market that was formerly not where you wnated to be. I'll go back and I'll try other food and hope that my next time improves as I like the staff, location and design...just need some consistency in service."

  • "We had a wonderful evening at Alta CA. We ordered quite a few of the items on the menu and got a broad range of tastes and experiences. Several of the dishes were exquisite, entertaining and tasty. A couple were just poorly prepared and no excuses could have overcome the problems with those dishes, for example, the unchewable, uncuttable "duck confit". I hope that Alta CA improves over time and starts to change their menu up a bit so that we can try new things in subsequent visits. I think I would go back for another experiment here."

  • "Most everything was excellent. The menu descriptions did not do justice to the amazing food and unique combinations of ingredients. The flavors and use of fresh ingredients made the dishes stand out. We really appreciated all the house made items, pastrami, blood orange marmalade in ricotta toasts, shaved sun choke chips,the porridge . Yum!!! Just remembered the soft serve ice cream with toppings . You gotta do it."

  • "Wonderful spot for lunch. The menu is small but tempting. I finally decided on the hen of the woods mushroom entree. It was like a risotto without the rice - cracked wheat porridge with mushrooms, turnips and salsa verde. Delicious! I'd like to try the black cod and hamburger on future visits. For dessert, I chose among several soft serve ice cream w/toppings. I had the vanilla with honey and rolled oats - a terrific end to a lovely lunch. The server was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the decor is very attractive. I highly recommend Alta CA!"

  • "The food and service were excellent at our dinner. Oysters with a creative mandarin and bay leaf mignonette were not perfect only because of a bit too much black pepper. Rye toast with ricotta and blood oranges and arugula was shockingly delicious. The hen of the woods mushroom porridge with baby turnips disappeared from our shared plate disappointingly quickly. The only "meh" aspects of the meal were the mixed drinks, which sounded promising but were not perfectly balanced, and the ice cream, which was fine but didn't live up to the fantastic dinner. I can't wait to come back and eat at the bar on a weeknight on the way home from work. Oh, and don't believe the Yelp reviews; the service was gracious, knowledgeable, and professional."

  • "The food was tasty but this was one of those places where you left hungry and wondering how the bill ended up so high. It's a nice place inside, with plenty of bar space and good atmosphere, but for us, the poor service and high prices were too much. The ice cream desert was especially disappointing, we had the mexican, which was just generic chocolate soft serve plus some cinnamon sprinkled on top. Boring."

  • "The open kitchen ambiance, interesting wine list, and creative, delicious food is truly worth a visit to Alta CA. But, don't bring a hankering for bread. The only option is ordering onion bialys, which are small and quickly harden. We've always said the quality (and presence) of the table bread say much about a restaurant, so Alta CA could clearly improve on this measure."
