Diner Reviews
  • "I was impressed by the tableside menu, the historic interior, and incredible attention to service that the wait staff showed. I would recommend Al's to anyone who is looking for a romantic dinner. "

  • "Tonight at Al's, I had the best tasting Filet Mignon that I have ever had. It was cooked to perfection as was the rest of my meal. My friends that I met there tonight could not stop raving about their seafood dinners. One of them had the Chilean Sea Bass and the other had Lobster Thermidore and they too said it was the best that they have ever had. Another nice thing about Al's was that a salad came included with our dinners along with a serving of lemon sorbet after our salads. It was nice not to be nickeled and dimed for everything extra that we received. The drinks were delicious as was the Bananas Foster for our desserts. Every course was served by an excellent waiters staff and a good time was had by all. We will be back. "

  • "Magnificent, Superb and Elegant are just a few words that I can use to describe my evening at Al's. For my appetizer I had carpachio. For my entree I had the steak romano and lobster tail which also included a dinner salad at no extra charge. For dessert I had the chocolate souffle which I needed to order a few days in advance. Everything from the beginning until the end was prepared and served to perfection. After dinner I went into their world famous riverboat bar for an after dinner drink. I could not have asked for a nicer evening. Thank you Als. I will definately be returning soon."

  • "What a special celebration enjoyed by all at AL'S. The food was terrific, the service was simply the best and the decor maid the perfect setting for this milestone occasion. What made things even better was it was wine Wednesday and the wine was half off. When you add it all up, AL'S is the place to go to Celebrate Good Times. I have already made my next reservation and I can hardly wait to experience another fantastic evening at AL'S."

  • "What an incredible evening, Al's has a passion for making dining an event, not just a meal. Tableside service adds flair to the ambiance of this classic establishment. I couldn't decide on an appetizer, so Harold put together a combination of my favorites - that's where their "ask and you shall receive" reputation makes for a truly fun and personalized service. Then of course had to have a steak. The 6oz filet was the perfect size and choice for me. Everything was cooked to perfection. It was an unhurried and relaxed evening where everyone makes you feel like you are their only customer, even when the dining room is full. The owner was also very gracious. Al's is definitely THE place to dine."

  • "This restaurant is my top destination for dining in St. Louis. The food is melt in your mouth delicious. The table side service by waiters dressed in tuxedos is second to none. The bar is a must see. Portions sizes for food and drinks are large. I had enough food left over for another meal. i enjoyed the history of the restaurant told to me by Bob who was my waiter. This is truly an amazing institution. I will be returning soon."

  • "Al's Restaurant in Downtown St Louis is the best value of any Fine Dining restaurant I have ever had the pleasure to dine at. With most fine dining establishments, everything is a la cart, but at Al's, you get a salad with your dinner. As far as prices go, if you can afford to go to the chain restaurants like Morton's, Fleming's and Ruth's Chris (which I do not really consider fine dining), then you will be happily surprised when you go to Al's because at Al's you get more value for less money. Plus, Al's has been locally owned by the same 4th generation St Louis family since 1925! Both the service and food are outstanding and the building is a historical landmark in and of itself and the ambiance is one of a kind. I will be back."

  • "The wife and I celebrated our 20th at Al's and it was certainly up to the occasion. Many of the new high end steak house chains try to emulate the look and feel of a decades seasoned establishment but Al's is the real deal. Not having a menu was a little un-nerving at first but the service was so special that it was not only not needed but would have taken away from the wonderful experience. Everything was spot on perfect but I have to mention the chocolate soufflé; don't hesitate to order in advance and know that it's more than any one person should ever eat! I travel and dine out for business quite often and am happy to say that one of the finest restaurants is right here in my home town."

  • "Went to Al's for dinner and had a wonderful experience. The service was outstanding and the food was delightful. I really enjoyed myself the whole night. I can't wait to go back and dine there again. Al's is a must go to!"

  • "It was a wonderful dinner at a legendary location. While other restaurants talk service and food, Al's still delivers."

  • "We ate at Al's on 3/28 with a 7:15 reservation and were 1 of 2 tables until about 8ish when 3 other tables showed up. The place was dead. The food was just ok overall. The garlic cream cheese spread for the bread basket was very good. Shrimp cocktail was just ok. Lobster in the Lobster Bisque was overcooked and soup was salty. Steaks were nice but the table side finishing was super old school and not classy. Steak butter was AWESOME. Wait staff was very polite and good, but tux outfits are very dated. Decor is soooooooo outdated. Restaurant seemed clean. Our bill was over $300 and I really expected more for the price we paid. Overall there was nothing WOW about Al's."

  • "Went to Als last weekend. Huge disappointment. Had been many times spanning 25 years. Steak was was under cooked. Nobody checked on us. When we complained about the food the management argued with us. Never going back. Don't waste your time or money."

  • "Best soufflés in town, must order them in advance of your visit though!"

  • "This place may have been good years ago but we were literally the only people in the place. It was very outdated, both the decor and the menu. I have no idea how it has remained open. It is supposed to be a steakhouse but the steaks were only fair at best. The lack of a menu is also outdated and while I knew it was going to be expensive I still would have liked to have the prices."

  • "........overall, while this was a positive experience, there were flaws. The shrimp cocktail was sub-par. The shrimp were of strange consistency.....maybe frozen and thawed. The salad was drowned in dressing. The NY strip was excellent as we're the pork chops."

  • "Excellent food selection for nightly dining -- steak and lobster was superb! Definitely a Five Star experience at a Five Star price. Staff was very professional and cordial, tending to our every need. Elaine has memorized the entire menu, and James took care of the rest."

  • "There is a reason that Al's has been in business since 1925...great food and great service. The professional wait staff aims to please."

  • "The four of us went to Al's down on Biddle the night before Valentine's Day. The place was very low-key. Our experience was fine, with no bumps along the way. We had a cocktail in the bar and then wine and appetizers and salads and entrees in the dining room. Gavi is my wife's favorite white wine, and they had a nice bottle of it. The pinot noir we wanted was not available, but there was another one for just five dollars more. We four agreed that we had a very nice meal."

  • "It' not often that we go to a 5 star restaurant, but it was my wife's b-day and our anniversary. I wanted surprise her with an excellent choice for dining! Al's was the perfect solution catering us with excellent service and menu choices. We where able to experience the silver platter menu presentation from Bob, and the assisting staff were great! I would highly recommend the experience to any couple looking for something different than your run of the mill restaurants... Al's has no equal!"

  • "Al's was a wonderful restaurant in the day. It is an iconic part of the waterfront dining scene. But lack of patronage has caused them to cut corners and unfortunately, the corners cut are in the food. I will not dwell on the bad. The good was as follows; the twice baked potato is to die for and the appetizers are very good. That's where I'll end. A place that can evoke nostalgic feelings of a better time as well as Al's does not deserve a cruel review."

  • "I guess this is OK if you like 50's- 60's steak houses but it was way too expensive and the food was way too mediocre. One of our steaks was over cooked and sent back while the other had little flavor. I probably shouldn't have ordered steak as I'm not a fan of aged meats - they always taste mealy to me. The twice baked potato was great as were the lobster bisque and lobster tail. If you order the Caesar, have them go light on the dressing. The service was fine and attentive. The wine list was very poor with too many expensive well-known bottles and not a lot of creativity. Not many mid-range affordable wines. I'd like to go back and hang at the bar, though...that was completely old school kitschy but might be fun."

  • "The service is outstanding, It was a wonderful dinning experience but the food didn't justify the price. I was let down, I was expecting something special but it was very good and cooked to my liking, it just didn't wow me for 200.00 for the two of us."

  • "I celebrated my 60th with family members at Al's. We had a very relaxing evening, great food and outstanding service. We looked at the online menu before going so we had an idea what we would like and even though one or two were not on the menu that evening the chef prepared them for us. If you go, plan to spend the evening - this is not a restaurant that serves you quickly so you leave quickly. No rush, just enjoy! Other reviews have mentioned that there are no prices given on the online menu nor at the table-side presentation. Others have stated to plan for about $50 per person without drinks. I would say it is better to plan for closer to $80/person if you want additional side dishes (meals include salad). I would highly recommend it!"

  • "Excellent old school presentation my great grandfather (a waiter) would have delivered at the best restaraunt in 1920's NY. The food is high quality, and tasty, but the service and ambiance drive the experience. An institution that should be supported. Make sure you spend time in the riverboat themed bar."

  • "The Steak was perfect and delicious, the special twice baked potato was tasteless, but nice and hot. The au Poivre sauce was pedestrian, no flavor and gloppy on the steak. Portions are large, especially the pasta dishes. The seafood combo was excellent. The extensive , customized -to-your -desires menu is a feat unto itself, and for a first timer, intimidating. Next time I will have a better idea of the range of great sauces to try with my dish."

  • "Al's in downtown St Louis is one of a kind and perfect in every way. According to my waiter, the restaurant was started in 1925 at this location and is still owned and run by the same family since it's inception. The inside decor is also one of a kind from it's riverboat bar and Mississippi mural painted on the walls to the rich wood paneled walls in 2 of the 3 dining rooms giving the overall ambiance of the restaurant a unique and fascinating look. The food is incredible and the table side service is extremely entertaining. Dinner at Al's is an "evening out". You are never rushed and the atmosphere is relaxing and enjoyable. Al's is no more expensive than the chain steakhouses, but you get so much more attention and value at Al's."

  • "This was not just dinner, this was a special occasion and Al's staff was incredible! Great food, with some nice chef's extras thrown in. Service was exceptional, if just because the waiter recites the entire menu by heart. Hardest part was trying to remember what he said! Highly recommend, especially if you need to impress someone or have a big birthday or anniversary to celebrate."

  • "We dined on a very quiet night--- we were the only ones in the restaurant for the first 45 minutes-- so we had a lot of attention. The portions were very generous and delicious."

  • "Al's is the greatest restaurant I have ever had the privilege to dine at. The steaks melt in your mouth and the seafood is to die for. The side dishes are large and the desserts like the bananas foster and the souffles (which need to be requested the day before) are just out of this world. Tables are spread out and not on top of one another so you do not hear the conversations of the tables that are next to you, which is why you see celebrities and St Louis business icons dinning there (like I did). I am sure that they like their conversations private also. I have already made my New Years reservation at Al's and am looking forward to starting off 2014 on a great note with a happy tummy and another outstanding dinning experience at Al's."

  • "Al's is a fine dinning restaurant in St Louis and is located less than 400 feet from the Mississippi river, one block north of the Four Seasons Hotel, 500 yards east of the STL Rams football stadium and about 800 yards north of the world famous STL Gateway Arch. It is one of the last standing buildings from that era in the area except for the Trigen power plant that is now listed on the Federal Historical Landmark Registry. Al's has been located in the same building and owned by the same STL family since 1925. The food and service are second to none and the mural in the river boat bar shows what the Mississippi river front looked like in the 1800's. This is a one of a kind STL treasure and is well documented in the history books of STL."

  • "Visiting St Louis from out of town. Would not return to Al's because of Location. In an industrial area...very dark night..poor outside lighting. Nothing else around it but vacant lots. Food & service was fine...without menu had no idea of tab until we got the bill"

  • "It was our first time and the food was great! The steaks were amazing. The waiters are very knowledgable, which is important because there is no menu! We both got the petite filet with the prosciutto and parmagian cheese in the middle. It was great! It's a bit pricey, but it shows in the quality."

  • "Go to Al's Restaurant in St. Louis, MO. Best service, steaks, seafood, drinks and deserts in St. Louis or anywhere else for that matter. Generous portions. First class accomendations. Knowledgeable and experienced wait staff. Eligant steakhouse decor. Wood paneling, expensive artwork on the walls, high back leather chairs, thick lush casino type carpet, white cloth table clothes and napkins, waiters in tuxedos, tableside service and an absolutly beautiful bar. Spoil yourself and go to Al's."
