Diner Reviews
  • "The mojitos are strong and delicious. THe food was very good but a little on the bland side. But it is easily fixed with a little salt :) I would definitely come back."

  • "Stumbled across this restaurant several months back - had a great dinner and drinks. Came back a 2nd time to celebrate birthdays - had another great experience. Appetizers were tasty (would not get the 'shared app for 2 or more at $13 pp - better to just buy separate apps - get more food). Drinks were good, and the dinner was great. Can get a little pricey depending on number of drinks, apps, dinner and dessert... Will be back soon."

  • "This was a lovely restaurant. The food was excellent, but the star of the evening was definitely the chocolate cigar, complete with sugar matchsticks."

  • "The lighting is very dark for the atmosphere. However, several diners needed a flashlight to read the menu & even at a small intimate table the noise level was such it was difficult to carry on a conversation and we were upstairs in a quieter part of the restaurant. Overall, the food was very good. My scallops and the chocolate cigar desert were excellent."

  • "Everything we ordered was delicious and well presented. However portions were small (other than pork ) do be prepared!"

  • "Been meaning to go here for awhile. It's a little on the expensive side but the food is good. At the table behind us a waitress spilled a pineapple drink all over someone, and there was a loud crash that came from the kitchen at some point but those things happen. Two managers came over and asked how our food was. I would return."

  • "The Thai Mixto appetizer was excellent (very small portion). The lettuce in the Caesar salad was brown around the edges and the dish did not live up to expectations from the menu description. All four entrees were perfect -- sugarcane tuna, cilantro honey mustard glazed salmon, sea scallops (very small portion) and skirt steak. For dessert, the roasted strawberry crepes were less than average, but the chocolate peanut butter bombe was out of this world and large enough to split. Service was perfect except when our server forgot to bring our coffee. The noise level was SO LOUD that the four of us had extreme trouble hearing one another. We won't return due to the noise level."

  • "This was my third time to have dinner at Alma De Cuba. All three have been fantastic! Went with friends that I see about every 7 years, so I'm not sure how adventurous they are in their dining. I think they were a little tentative going to a "Cuban" restaurant; however they left raving about it. We ordered Ceviche, which none of us eat regularly and all enjoyed it. Two had chicken, I had the Skirt Steak and only needed a fork, and my buddy had the fish. All dishes were cooked perfectly and were flavorful. Our server was perfect. Can't wait to get back to Philly and Alma De Cuba!!"

  • "We had the tuna, salmon, fluke ceviche and it was out of this world. Spicy, fresh. The scallops we both had were cooked to perfection. The chocolate cigar was delicious and creative. Our server was excellent, and the staff was friendly and accommodating. The surroundings, no matter what section you sit in, are inviting. We sat by the front windows and loved our table. The restaurant was a little chilly; if you are a woman who gets cold easily, bring a light sweater."

  • "Outstanding in every way! We enjoyed the happy hour in the bar area before dinner. The mojitos were the best! With our mojitos we ordered the amazing dates and guacamole. Both were full of flavor. Dinner was very flavorful. The fish was well prepared and the special of the night delicious. We definitely intend to return."

  • "My wife and I had a wonderful meal at Alma de Cuba. Drinks had a Cuban twist and were very good. The food was wonderful, service was also excellent. Would highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "Wonderful wait staff, the manager stopped by to make sure we were happy, the food was delicious. The only small criticism I have is that it was quite dim and we (being a bit older) had a very difficult time reading the menu (maybe the print could be slightly larger). Other than that, the food and service was fabulous and we will certainly visit again (but will bring a tiny flashlight!)"

  • "I have dined at Alma de Cuba several times and I have previously really enjoyed it. On this occasion, we tried the tasting menu and it may have just been a slow evening but the meal was pretty uninspiring."

  • "I've dined at Alma De Cuba twice and I adore this restaurant. Being both enamored with Caribbean food and culture as well as being gluten free, this spot could not be better for me. The ambiance of the tiered dining levels is wonderful, and the food, delicious. The Yuka (GF!) rolls are to die for, and the majority of the menu is gluten free."

  • "The service was outstanding. Very attentive, friendly, efficient and unobtrusive. The managers stopped by to say hello and make sure everything was to our satisfaction. The menu was interesting and the food was excellent. My friends raved about the black bean soup appetizer. We all enjoyed our entries. I had the flank steak which was beautifully presented, very tender and tasty. The others raved about the scallops, presentation and accompaniments. They serve these small gluten-free rolls which were wonderful. We didn't try the desserts as nothing appealed to us. I highly recommend this restaurant."

  • "This restaurant was truly a great find. We are not local to Phille and had several recommendations for this restaurant. The food was amazing, the menu very original, the drink list was excellent and the service was superior. We all enjoyed our meal and were very surprised to receive a visit from both the manager and assistant manager to ensure that we all had a wonderful dining experience. We will certainly go back whenever we are in Phille and look forward to enjoying meals at other restaurants owned by this fabulous chef."

  • "I had a change in the number of people and let Alma know ahead of time. The folks at Alma de Cuba were exceptionally helpful and found a way to accommodate the larger group. The service was stellar at the reception! We had mojitos as we waited to be seated; we had a variety of cerviches, which were excellent as was the octopus; the dates with bacon and cheese were also excellent. The mashed and fried plantains were the lest spectacular of the appetizers. Our group varied in their entrees from the salmon, to the pork; everyone raved. We had a Malbec with dinner. The only challenge was that we had a really noisy group next to us so it was hard to hear one another."

  • "We had a fabulous meal. The food was excellent. I am vegetarian, but eat fish. There were numerous choices that I could choose from. The staff was attentive and the assistant GM took time to speak with is when we were leaving. Overall it was a wonderful experience. Portions were just the right size. We each ordered a drink, appetizer, entree and split a desert. We have recommended to our friends. We will be back."

  • "It had been a few years since we had been here, but it was a welcome return. The menu has changed a bit, but the favorites are still there. My personal favorite is Carnes Asado - crispy beef with amazing flavor. I would have been disappointed if it wasn't available. The Rainbow ceviche was outstanding and a bigger portion than I was expecting. My husband had the Monkfish special which he enjoyed. There was no room for dessert. Wine and drink selection always a high point. Don't miss a chance to dine here. Only downside was the very low chairs which my 6'2'' husband had a hard time getting in/out of, but once seated were fine. Bon appetit!"

  • "We went to Alma De Cuba before a shown a Friday evening. We had been to Alma several times before but not for several years. The appetizers were excellent especially the Alma special three tier appetizers. The main courses were average - my tuna was kind of rubbery. one of my guests had the calamari and did not finish it - it was nothing like what he expected. Two of my party had the chicken - they both said it was OK. Our waitress was excellent and attentive."

  • "The food was awesome, the service superb, ambiance was outstanding, BUT it was not handicap accessible. Our party of 9 came with our grandmother who could not climb the steep stairs to the bathroom (she had to use the kitchen bathroom), didn't have an elevator (our table was on the 3rd floor) so we had to switch to the first floor area where our party of 9 had to be split into 2 tables. Not what we intended for such a special occasion as our daughter's graduation from PCOM."

  • "We took my son there for his birthday. He had been raving about it for 10 years, since he was last there. Felt it was risky because it is hard for anything to compare to the legendary food he remembered. It did and more, actually exceeded expectations. He is the "foodie" and felt it was one of the best dinners he has ever had. My husband and I are not very adventurous when it comes to food and we both loved it. The service was better than I have ever experienced, really know their menu. Wholeheartedly recommend it!"

  • "I love Cuban food and Alma de Cuba hit the spot! Their mojitos were excellent as was all the food. Our party of four ordered several appetizers, two entrees to share, and desert. When the coffee was as a little delayed to the table, the manager swiftly brought it and took it off the bill--very nice. The manager came over to our table more than once to check on us and he was great. I made a reservation well in advance but the restaurant wasn't too crowded. In a great neighborhood within walking distance to many other spots. I would definitely revisit Alma de Cuba."

  • "The food at Alma De Cuba is fabulous! Everything we had was absolutely exceptional and memorable, particularly the scallops, the plantains, and the tuna taco appetizer. The happy hour deal made it pretty reasonably priced, as well. My only complaint would be the noise level at the bar, but it wasn't nearly as loud in the restaurant proper. This restaurant really enhanced our visit to Philadelphia, and I would enthusiastically recommend it! I only regret that we live too far away to visit it again."

  • "We ate at Alma de Cuba on a Friday night. Food was outstanding - fresh, inventive, and well-executed. The waiter - who said he had worked there for 13 years - was attentive, informed, helpful, and enthusiastic. It was a bit more expensive than some other places, but well worth it."

  • "We had a fun and festive dining experience. The service was great, the atmosphere sleek, and the food terrific! Our favorites were the appetizers. We very much loved all the ceviches that we sampled, especially the Thai one. The appetizer sampler was well worth it despite the small portion size. The pork entry was rich and tasty, yet fatty, but our server warned us about that. The restaurant is moderately noisy, but somehow it adds to the fun. We will definitely be back!"

  • "We were very pleased with our experience. The ceviche sampler was really fresh and delicious. Everything was very carefully prepared and the wine list was also really great! We will definitely be back!"

  • "The food was spectacular and the service was so friendly and professional that we would have been delighted even if the food had not been so fabulous! We ate here once before in 2008 on my only other trip to Philadelphia and remembered it was great. It has only gotten better! All four diners in our party were equally pleased Don't miss the signature "cigar" for dessert!"

  • "This was a business dinner. I'm not and expert on Cuban food, and selecting Alma de Cuba was a shot in the dark. The dining experience far exceeded expectations. The waitress was courteous and helpful. She was present but not obtrusive. The drinks were authentic. The food presentation was impeccable. Everything form the appetizers, to the entree, to the dessert was delicious. A truely memorable dining experience. You can't go wrong."

  • "We got there before 5 pm and the staff was still having a meeting. At about 5:15, we were seated. The meal was great, but getting there before they hit there cruising gear means initially spotty service."

    Dined on 7/4/2014
  • "This is our 3rd or 4th time at Alma De Cuba. We had the Alma Sampler appetizer (can't get enough of those stuffed dates) and the octopus, which was cooked to perfection, yet tender. We could have polished off a 2nd dish of this, delicious. We had crispy pork, and Scallops over quinoa. I would have liked just 1 more scallop on my plate...there were only 3 with a large amount of quinoa. Tapioca was delicious, not at all like that fake tapioca that diners serve. Large pearls of tapioca with a hint of coconut, or at least I think it was. My only complaint would be the lighting is so dim its hard to read the menu descriptions, even with reading glasses. I like dim lighting, but its killer to read the menu."
