  • "We made the mistake of going here for the end of a business visit. Conversation was impossible. The playlist was very loud, and the surfaces hard and reflective, so the guests compensated by shouting at each other. The food was excellent. Our friend, who had been to Cuba a few times, said the mojito was exactly right. The service was spot on. Although I like low-level lighting I saw two separate couples - located in the middle of the floor - using small flashlights to read their menus. So they might want to re-think that. Also the combination of closely packed tiny tables, thin tall glasses of water and large heavy menus is a recipe for disaster."

  • "Used to be a big fan. Hadn't been in a few years. Place seems tired and in need of spruce up. Service was ok. About 4 different servers helped us but water glass was empty a lot. I didn't fee like I was cared for. My daughter dropped her steak knife and a bus boy immed picked it up, but no one brought her another. The food was still very good but the fried cow had shrunk dramatically in size. It used to be a family favorite. Classic mojito still tasty but the sugar cane stick in my drink was black at the bottom and tasted bad. $200 for 3 people for a quick night out felt pretty expensive for what I got."

From the Brazilian bread, to the Royal Palm Dates, to the perfectly prepared salmon with banana and lentil, to the (gluten-free!) decadent chocolate flourless cake. Can you tell I'm still dreaming about my meal this week? Thank you Alma de Cuba for taking me away from the stress of the world for a meal. Yup... these meals take me to another place. The Lenguado "al fuego", Octopus Escalivada, and the Tuna Tostone were all very tasty.The Rice Calamari was excellent. Overall very happy with our dinner choice."

Escorted from a lively bar scene to a quiet table upstairs, we surveyed the very interesting menu, and took recommendations from our server. We ordered the cocktail special, which was a delicious thai basil mojito. The server took our dinner order, and we relaxed with the breads. Our dinners arrived before the third sip of our drinks. The food was delicious and plentiful. We did feel rushed, and though we understand the need to move tables quickly on a weekend, this seemed to push it. Our server was fine; this was a kitchen issue. However, it messed with the ambiance of the evening, and we left to have a leisurely drink at another restaurant."

  • "My reservation may or may not have been necessary since the restaurant was not full when I got there at 8 pm, but it did fill up nicely as the night went on, so probably a good idea to book. The interior is beautiful, the ambience is terrific, although I had a lot of problems reading the menu because of the size of the print and the dim lighting. The music was also little too loud, and the only other negative was the price of the menu items. I compared it to Cuba Libre in Old Town, and while not off by much, for a lesser known establishment I would have expected lower prices. The Thai Mix Ceviche I had was terrific however as was the seared tuna(?) ordered by my companion."

  • "I hadn't been here in a number of years but had positive memories. Things were quite different. Positives: the bread with dipping sauce & appetizer sampler were yummy. The drinks were tasty. The scallop was perfectly cooked. Negatives: the drinks were very light on alcohol - surprisingly so. The scallops were a little gritty, & the dish overall (scallop & quinoa) was over salted, so much so I did not want to finish it. The staff were overly attentive to the point of being overbearing. My friends & I just wanted to catch up & it seemed like our conversation kept getting interrupted. The meal was a reasonable success overall, but with so many great places to eat in the city, I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon."

We had the 3 ceviche sampler and my wife and I agree that it was hands down the best ceviche we've had anywhere in the country. Entrees were also outstanding and exceeded the high expectations set by the descriptions. Service was also outstanding with our waitress giving us very helpful, honest advice about not making a substitution. We enjoy eating at top restaurants around the country and a handful make it on our list of favorites that we would definitely return to - this is one of those!"

  • "The food at Alma de Cuba is exceptional, including unique menu items, imaginative presentation, and an excellent wine list. The only negatives are non-culinary: the restaurant (at least, the second floor) is so dimly lit that a flashlight is essential to read the menu. The noise level is very high (music is piped in to the second floor dining area as well), making conversation a challenge. Though I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for a quiet romantic evening, if you can tolerate the noise and the low light, you'll be more than satisfied with the excellent cuisine."

Once our guests arrived our server quickly took out drink order then allowed us plenty of time to talk and view the menu. We want to go back to try some of the other items on the menu that looked interesting."

My girlfriend and I had an early meal before a concert but on a Friday evening, the place was hopping with happy hour crowd. We had a wonderful, attentive and accommodating server which always makes the experience pleasant. Then, we were treated by a little meet and greet with the chef/owner, Douglas Rodriguez who was in the midst of introducing the new Spring menu. With his recommendation, we tried a mixture of fresh ceviches and their signature Smoked Albacore Tacos among other treats... and the Chocolate Cigar, YUM."

Our server was average at best, but that may have been her reaction to serving a group of women. Shame on her -- doesn't she know women are typically better tippers than men? We had to ask for several things, but her poor attitude notwithstanding, we had a delicious evening!"

  • "After an evening perusing the Philadelphia Flower Show we braved the freezing temps and had a late dinner at Alma de Cuba. Although this restaurant has been here years, this was our group of 6 1st visit, and we all will return. We were seated on the 2nd floor of the former 1800's house. The exposed brick & old staircase vs the modern furniture & fixtures really works here. We enjoyed the black bean soup (a Cuban staple). My ahi tuna was served on lollypop sticks and cooked perfectly. The salmon and shrimp and cheesy grits (spicy) were also top notch. Service excellent, and since it was a week night & late we could carry on a conversation in normal voices. Ole' to Starr, Alma de Cuba is muy delicioso!"

  • "Had an early dinner with another couple. The service was excellent. We tried some rum drinks that were delicious. We had the sampler appetezer where we each got to try each of the three appetizers. Very good and just the right amount. For dinner, two had the shrimp and grits, one had the sea scallops and I had the skirt steak. I tried everyone's entree and I'm not sure that I could say which I liked the best. All three entrees were fabulous! We skipped dessert, since we had tickets for a show. Would definitely go again and recommend it highly!"
