Diner Reviews
  • "It was absolutely wonderful! i went there for my anniversary and we had a blast! It was restaurant week, so I didn't get to sample the whole menu, but what we did order was hot, fresh, and delicious!"

  • "The music at the restaurant was uncomfortably loud! This was our fourth time here; first time for this level of noise!"

  • "Quite pricey and food was quite simple... Went on a date, but it didn't feel like a date- worthy restaurant... Kids were there at 10pm, chairs are low to the table, and it's quite cramped with not much room for privacy (not really a good intimate setting)... Service was great though."

  • "Great food, prepared and seasoned just right! Great flavors and a super atmosphere."

  • "Our waitress was fantastic, attentive and informed. The wine list was decent, not great, but the wine steward was earnest. Unfortunately the noise level was somewhere between rock concert and jet take off which kind of spoiled what was supposed to be a romantic dinner. If you are into the vibrant bar scene by all means this is your place, but don't go for a romantic dinner. "

  • "Impressed with the octopus, pork shank and steak. Duck less so. Granache was a big disappointment, the Chilean Pinot Noir made up for it, outstanding. Very attentive and professional service from entrance to exit. Our waitress was fantastic. "

  • "Philadelphia has a thriving restaurant scene. Within limits. Weeknights, after the theatre, options are severely limited. Alma de Cuba offers terrific Cuban food in a handsome setting, with friendly service and reasonable prices late at night. Lots of corner tables, candle light, authentic Cuban music (a trifle too loud) on the speakers, minimalist decor (black and white photos), and an outstanding classic mojito. The chef is skilled. The sugarcane tuna, seared and rare, was outstanding, sitting atop a bed of potatoes and spinach. My wife had the arroz con pollo, a bountiful serving of chicken and rice, modernized with a sunny side egg afloat in the rice. The dessert list looked interesting, but we passed because of the late hour."

  • "We were visiting from Washington, DC for the weekend and chose to go to Alma De Cuba. We were all extremely happy with our dining experience. We had three ceviches and the special sweetbread appetizer to start. Both were excellent. Our entrees were also excellent - I had the crispy pork, which was full of flavor and extremely juicy."

  • "The food and service was excellent. One of the managers came to our table and asked for comments and was genuinely interested. It was an extremely enjoyable evening."

  • "We split an empanada for an app which was very good. Both of us had the classic mojito. They were good. Then I had duck breast for an entree and ordered marinated golden beets as a side. My fiancé had the skirt steak. All was presented perfectly and tasted incredible. We were too full for dessert but they sounded pretty interesting. The only issue was it was very dark and some people were using iphone flashlights to read the menu. The place has three levels so the noise carries but was not overbearing. Price is up there but not crazy for the city. We had a gift cert so we didn't really care. Cost was a little over $100 without tip and dessert."

  • "I never miss an opportunity to dine at Alma de Cuba when visiting Philly. Everything from the drinks, the warm cheesy bread starter, the entrees, and the service are always consistently fantastic."

  • "Everything was superb; the variety of menu items was exceptional, but the best part was our waiter who helped us navigate everything from drinks to desert! He really made the dinner!"

  • "We made the mistake of going here for the end of a business visit. Conversation was impossible. The playlist was very loud, and the surfaces hard and reflective, so the guests compensated by shouting at each other. The food was excellent. Our friend, who had been to Cuba a few times, said the mojito was exactly right. The service was spot on. Although I like low-level lighting I saw two separate couples - located in the middle of the floor - using small flashlights to read their menus. So they might want to re-think that. Also the combination of closely packed tiny tables, thin tall glasses of water and large heavy menus is a recipe for disaster."

  • "I took a customer there for dinner and it was a great time. There were so many great wines apps, and entree's to choose from, it actually opened up more conversation outside of business!! Thanks AdC!!"

  • "Used to be a big fan. Hadn't been in a few years. Place seems tired and in need of spruce up. Service was ok. About 4 different servers helped us but water glass was empty a lot. I didn't fee like I was cared for. My daughter dropped her steak knife and a bus boy immed picked it up, but no one brought her another. The food was still very good but the fried cow had shrunk dramatically in size. It used to be a family favorite. Classic mojito still tasty but the sugar cane stick in my drink was black at the bottom and tasted bad. $200 for 3 people for a quick night out felt pretty expensive for what I got."

  • "If you like Latin cuisine you will really enjoy the layers of flavors that this chef incorporates into his creations. Exceptional service, refined ambiance, and most important, fantastic food. If you ever get the chance, don't miss this one!!!"

  • "I have yet to find another restaurant that rivals Alma de Cuba. Every single bite is pure heaven.... every... single... bite. From the Brazilian bread, to the Royal Palm Dates, to the perfectly prepared salmon with banana and lentil, to the (gluten-free!) decadent chocolate flourless cake. Can you tell I'm still dreaming about my meal this week? Thank you Alma de Cuba for taking me away from the stress of the world for a meal. Yup... these meals take me to another place. Talk about savoring the moment."

  • "I absolutely love Cuban food. I had the roast pork and my daughter had the chicken and rice. The pork was very good as was her chicken. I've had better cuban food though at much lower prices. I will add however, the desserts were delicious as was my mojito."

  • "We decided to make reservations here on a whim and were not disappointed. Every single thing we ate was so delicious it should be a crime. Rum cured duck breast. Enough said! This place is definitely on the "to dine at" list the next time we're in Philly."

  • "Despite the fact that we were 40 minutes late to our 7:15 pm reservation, the hostess and the staff were very pleasant. Our table was ready. The food was very good . The Lenguado "al fuego", Octopus Escalivada, and the Tuna Tostone were all very tasty. The Rice Calamari was excellent. Overall very happy with our dinner choice."

  • "I consider myself a foodie and restaurant snob and Alma De Cuba exceeded my expectations. Great food, great service, and great atmosphere. While the menu seems somewhat simple the preparation and special spices made every dish very special."

  • "My husband and I were celebrating his Bday as well as our engagement - 6 yrs. ago. It was my husband's first time eating Cuban food. Our waiter was great at taking the time to explain the essence of cuban cuisine as well as passionate about the Cuban dining experience. We cannot wait to go back!"

  • "As an experienced chef at home who frequently makes dishes that exceed those I eat out, I have to gush over Alma de Cuba. Not only is the food fantastic, but you literally cannot make it at home. I know because Ive tried."

  • "We were really looking forward to our evening here, and initially we were quite happy. Escorted from a lively bar scene to a quiet table upstairs, we surveyed the very interesting menu, and took recommendations from our server. We ordered the cocktail special, which was a delicious thai basil mojito. The server took our dinner order, and we relaxed with the breads. Our dinners arrived before the third sip of our drinks. The food was delicious and plentiful. We did feel rushed, and though we understand the need to move tables quickly on a weekend, this seemed to push it. Our server was fine; this was a kitchen issue. However, it messed with the ambiance of the evening, and we left to have a leisurely drink at another restaurant."

  • "My reservation may or may not have been necessary since the restaurant was not full when I got there at 8 pm, but it did fill up nicely as the night went on, so probably a good idea to book. The interior is beautiful, the ambience is terrific, although I had a lot of problems reading the menu because of the size of the print and the dim lighting. The music was also little too loud, and the only other negative was the price of the menu items. I compared it to Cuba Libre in Old Town, and while not off by much, for a lesser known establishment I would have expected lower prices. The Thai Mix Ceviche I had was terrific however as was the seared tuna(?) ordered by my companion."

  • "I hadn't been here in a number of years but had positive memories. Things were quite different. Positives: the bread with dipping sauce & appetizer sampler were yummy. The drinks were tasty. The scallop was perfectly cooked. Negatives: the drinks were very light on alcohol - surprisingly so. The scallops were a little gritty, & the dish overall (scallop & quinoa) was over salted, so much so I did not want to finish it. The staff were overly attentive to the point of being overbearing. My friends & I just wanted to catch up & it seemed like our conversation kept getting interrupted. The meal was a reasonable success overall, but with so many great places to eat in the city, I'm not sure I'll be back anytime soon."

  • "We were in Philadelphia for one night and looking for a great meal - Alma De Cuba handily exceeded our expectations. We had the 3 ceviche sampler and my wife and I agree that it was hands down the best ceviche we've had anywhere in the country. Entrees were also outstanding and exceeded the high expectations set by the descriptions. Service was also outstanding with our waitress giving us very helpful, honest advice about not making a substitution. We enjoy eating at top restaurants around the country and a handful make it on our list of favorites that we would definitely return to - this is one of those!"

  • "The food at Alma de Cuba is exceptional, including unique menu items, imaginative presentation, and an excellent wine list. The only negatives are non-culinary: the restaurant (at least, the second floor) is so dimly lit that a flashlight is essential to read the menu. The noise level is very high (music is piped in to the second floor dining area as well), making conversation a challenge. Though I wouldn't recommend this restaurant for a quiet romantic evening, if you can tolerate the noise and the low light, you'll be more than satisfied with the excellent cuisine."
