A word from Alluette's Cafe
Alluette’s Café is Alluette’s newest venture. Alluette prepares the food as it is ordered. You may have to wait a little longer for that freshly prepared food, but once you take your first taste, you will be glad you came. Alluette’s Café is a “No Pork” restaurant. There are daily specials for lunch and dinner. Alluette has an “always on the menu” section including brown rice and organic tofu for the vegan and vegetarian diner. No sugar is used in the preparation of any food or beverage. Seafood is bought daily from local vendors. Joseph Fields is still a main supplier of seasonal organic produce. Alluette’s Café is a “Fresh on the Menu Certified SC Grown” restaurant. The dining room here is small and comfortable. Local artists’ works adorn the salmon colored walls and enhance the warm feeling of the café. A small patio is encircled with flowering plants, herbs such as basil and rosemary and even some pepper plants. Alluette’s Café is a one of a kind eating establishment. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Clearly Alouette loves food and making delicious meals for customers. A very friendly atmosphere for lunch or dinner!"

  • "Off the beaten path and for those who wish the road less traveled and a unique experience. Don't steer away from outer appearance because not only is there heart and soul inside but your mind, body and spirit will be fed. Go for the chicken salad, fish stew and black bean burger with a hummus dip on the side. Healthy and clean eating! Only advice is bring your own wine as that is not yet the special focus (red is chilled and not great). "

  • "Alluette's cafe has good food but very slow service. The wait staff has some knowledge of the menu but they are expert of it. The restaurant scenery is eccentric. It is an acquired taste. There is an outside dining area but in the South Carolina sun, the heat is a problem. I would not recommend Alluette for children whatsoever. "

  • "Indifferent, slothful service made worse by half-hearted, poorly prepared food. We're we not "entertaining" friends, we would have walked out. At least we can be sure not to return. Ever. Don't make the mistake of trying this place. It should be de-listed be Open Table, it's that bad."

  • "I had read about this restaurant in an article about Charleston that appeared in the New York Times last November. Our party of six decided to go there for lunch. It was an expensive lunch, but worth the price, even though Alluette was not in the kitchen that day. Lester was taking her place, and his special fried chicken was excellent, as was the cole slaw. The Times had mentioned the lima bean soup, so we had to try it and it lived up to the rave reviews. Don't be put off by the looks of the neighborhood or the exterior of the restaurant. Our only complaint was that they don't serve tap water, but their fruited iced tea was a great accompaniment to the lunch (and the refills were free)."

  • "Alluette herself was there and she is very interesting to talk with...food was great, wholesome tasty; service very slow but they have a sign up to warn you about the time it takes; small and noisy place but overall ambience good...a bit overpriced."

  • "Been visiting Charleston for nearly 30 years, and our evening at Alluette's was one of the most memorable. Small, intimate and humble setting, the food and the staff were truly extraordinary. Organic ingredients, southern flair, each dish made to order....not your standard restaurant fare. Not an evening to be rushed, not to be missed."

  • "When you're tired of the trendy foodie crowded hot spots in Charleston, and there are plenty, get yourself down to Alluette's Cafe, a bit off the grid but still within the historic district of Charleston and walking distance from most places. Bold and beautiful cafe with lots of charm and the best friend shrimp this half-Southern Yankee has ever tasted. This is like a tall cool glass of lemonade on a hot day--refreshing and restorative to the soul. Feed your soul and feed your self well at Alluette's. Don't forget to say hi to Alluette, who is the heart and center of her cozy cafe!"

  • "Location and appearance for first time dinners may be a concern but don't be put off. We had a wonderful dining surprise in a pleasant very friendly and very causal setting. Great wholesome southern style organic foods on the menu prepared by the Lady Chef who knows her stuff. Her collards are the best I've had .... and I'm a southern boy in my 60's. We will visit this place often."

  • "Don't miss the great fried oysters! Funky place with overall great food, though the pasta was a little overcooked."

  • "We were having a quick weekend trip in Charleston, traveling from Boston, and I had read about this place, and it was oh-so-close to our Holiday Inn. We really enjoyed the healthy take on soul food, and really enjoyed meeting and talking to Alluette herself, she is such a friendly and warm person! The fish stew was AMAZING :)"

  • "Quality of food was excellent- we loved the freshness of the selections Staff was very friendly - and very helpful in explaining menu and making suggestions Pace of meal was a bit slow- so not sure if you need to get in/out quickly this is best choice. We were not in any hurry, so enjoyed taking our time Exterior hides a nice gem inside"

  • "Do not let location and outside appearance deceive you. The food is excellent. It is a Charleston dining experience. Soul food stepped up a notch or two. Try it and you will be very happy you did."

  • "Aluette's is unusual: a soul-food diner with a love for vegetables. Don't let the ambience (or lack thereof) put you off: the simple, down-home setting is a perfect fit for simple, down-home food made from fresh ingredients. We had the veggie Thanksgiving meal: a lovely hummus with chips, incredibly tender collards, a flavorful rice, a delicious soup, and a vegan oatmeal raisin cookie to finish it off. I wish the wine (by the glass) were a little better quality, and the red wine had been served room-temp vs. clearly right out of the fridge. It's also a bit pricey - but hey, this is all hand-cooked."

  • "When travelling to Charleston, we now have an option that caters to our eating habits. No more vegetable plates or pasta primavera."

  • "We went for dinner and the food is way too expensive for what is offered and for the setting. We were only ones in restaurant so I cannot comment on level of noise."

  • "Dinner options for my family and I fell through at that last minute, so we searched Yelp and Open Table for recommendations for a last minute reservation. Alluette's did not disappoint. The food was some of the most flavorful I've experienced, while remaining simple. The local component of the food sourcing is great. The service was friendly, casual, and very accommodating (we had our 2 year old toddler with us). Highly recommended!"
