Diner Reviews
  • "Restaurant week in NYC. We found Alloro online, highly recommended, we booked a table for 19.45. We were warmly welcomed and given a table at the front of the restuarant. We decided on the set menu designed for Restaurant week at $38.00. Why do restaurants participate when clearly more attention is shown to the locals and those who order alcarte? Our three courses were served within an hour and then we were asked to have coffee at the bar as waiting guests wanted our table. Saying no we received "daggers" from the guests waiting for the table. So unfair as this was an error of management not us. The staff were kind and I sensed they were also embarrassed by our comments. Great food but avoid during restaurant week."

  • "Food is amazing. Great for the traditionalist and for the adventerous."

  • "Amazing as always!!! This is one of my favorite restaurants!!! Their menu has a traditionalist and adventurist side so there is something for everyone!!"

  • "The service was just right (attentive but not hovering), the advice on our choice of wine was spot-on, and the food was superlatively good!"

  • "Had an amazing dinner at Alloro as usual...the service was great...and the food not to be missed..."

  • "Discovering something special in your own backyard is always a wonderful surprise. We had some special company that likes to try "new" places so to Alloro we went. Delightful place with lovely people - including the owners. Dependable and creative menus - you have to go there to understand that - which pleased the eye and the palate. A very special and well thought out wine list - with some wonderful Sicilian wines. All in all - not to be missed"

  • "If you love eggplant parmigiana & veal meat balls w/ the most delicious marinara sauce then your in for a treat in the UES. It melts in your mouth ;)"

  • "We were happy with our meal. The pineapple risotto was especially good!"

  • "The service was friendly and warm, and you could easily hear the dinner conversation. The menu presents two options; traditional and adventurous. We sampled from both sides of the menu and were happy with all of our choices. Some highlights were the rigatoni w/ quail ragu, the house lasagna, the ricotta cheesecake and the chocolate four ways. I would go back for sure."

  • "Everything was great except the main entree. The best meatballs, eggplant parm, and sauce we ever had. The sardine in the pasta dish was perfect. Then the big disappointment. My sister's veal dish was good but my suckling pig dish was so salty. I barely touched it. I even told my waiter. He did not offer to bring the dish back. "

  • "Loved the two "traditional" and "adventurous" menu options. We tried both and were delighted with the food. Our waiter was welcoming, friendly, attentive and helpful with our choices. We're looking forward to returning and making Alloro a "go-to" place."

  • "Interesting approach with two menus -- one classic and one adventurous. The lamb Milanese was outstanding as was the lasagna, so they do both well. Many reasonable wines along with pricey if you want to head that way. "

  • "First class food and warm and inviting at the same time. Excellent wine list offering value and some beauties for the oenophile. Great spot. "

  • "This is our go-to restaurant, for a cozy, romantic atmosphere and exceptional food that is 'different' without being bizarre. We love the new Menu categories: one, for The Traditionalist; and the other, for The Adventurist. Of course, you can choose anything from either side of the menu, but be sure to come together and share one of the decadent but delicate desserts!"

  • "this is the third time we go there. The owner/chef and staff are great. The food is good and consistent although the menu changes seasonally so I am not able to have my favourite dishes there every time I am in NY :)"

  • "Alloro is our new favorite. The food is always wonderful, the service warm and attentive, and the room warm and inviting. "

  • "Chef Salvatore only uses the highest quality ingredients to prepare the best dishes of Italian tradition (I'm Italian, so I know what Italian food should taste like) as well as his innovative creations. You can't find a higher price-quality ratio in town"

  • "We were surprised to have missed this restaurant. They have been in our neighborhood for 7 years and we missed it. It was imaginative and quiet which is a real bonus. We will go again soon."

  • "Excellent food and also a great venue for small parties."
    Dined on 4/29/2014
  • "The food is rich and complex and very different from most Italian restaurants. The chef is attentive to every nuance of the service and asks each table if they are happy with the food. The wine list has very expensive choices and it is fair to say that this is not a neighborhood place but one for a demanding foodie willing to rise above the local level."

  • "We were a group of six and each and every person at the table found the food at Alloro to be outstanding. Unusual pairings of food with herbs etc. Alloro's menu is exciting and not run of the mill Manhattan."

  • "Great dining experience. Plan to visit again the next time I'm in the city. The food was well prepared and presented. The chocolate 4 ways is a fantastic dessert."

  • "This restaurant wow'd us by their expert layering of flavors and their large portion sizes."

  • "For foods that you would never think of pairing and could never make at home, Alloro provides a stellar gastronomic experience. Some of the menu offerings sound like they are straining to be 'different,' but chef-owner Salvatore clearly has an imagination that is coupled with an excitement about and knowledge of what tastes absolutely wonderful. The food is satisfying but never heavy. Presentation is artistic without being 'precious.' The menu changes seasonally, and currently is divided into two sections: one for "The Traditionalist" (which is still a fresh take on classics) and one for the "Adventurist." Yes, it is pricey, but for a special occasion, Alloro is our local favorite."

  • "Always a great meal. The staff is welcoming and friendly. You feel like you've walked into a good friend's kitchen when you arrive. Best of all, they are always glad to see our kids. But really, what keeps us coming back is the food. Always surprising, always inventive and always, always delicious. And on this visit, we were happy to see that the owners have worked hard to upgrade their wine list. Once again, we left satisfied and talking about the great meal we'd had. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Alloro is not a run of the mill family restaurant. It offers unusual but delicious dishes using different ingredients. The eggplant parmigiana appetizer is the best!!"

  • "Wonderful Italian cuisine. Detailed delicious meals"

  • "The service was great. The food is balanced just right. I love that. The quail rigatoni with truffle and orange zest started out like a blind date. I looked at it and immediately judged it as not suitable for my taste. I took a bite but carefully didn't incorporate every element of its parts in fear of having an anti-climactic drawn out evening together. This dish is of the sort like a lot of people that gets better when you truly get to experience everything it is."

  • "Have dined here many times and it is always excellent food and service. Tuna tartar was wonderful as well as the lasagna."

  • "This is certainly a little hidden gem on the Upper East Side. Food is really excellent, service friendly and pleasant and not too noisy (a big plus). They do occasionally run out of things but are accommodating in suggesting substitutions. It is certainly a very pleasant experience dining here."

  • "The menu at Alloro is always interesting and the imaginative dishes usually work well. For example , the Tuna tartare in am arugula sauce with candied tomatoes and capers was quite good , as was the poached salmon unusually served over a buffalo mozzarella purée. Although it took us a while to be seated for our reservation, once the meal began, the service,as always, was warm, friendly and well timed."

  • "My friend and I tried Alloro last week. I arrived first, and was seated at a table in the front of the restaurant, in front of a vented window to the kitchen. All of a sudden, I began to feel this very uncomfortable vibration throughout my body, almost as if a huge 18 wheeler was parked right outside with its engine running...or as if the subway was running right beneath me, without ever passing. Needless to say, it was quite unsettling for me. The chef finally figured out that the vibrations were coming from the exhaust fan in the kitchen! I politely asked to be moved to the back of the restaurant, and the chef obliged, although noone came to help me move...until I decided to move myself. The food was good, different, but not for me."

  • "Alloro has been open for perhaps three years and in that time Salvatore and Gina have really established a restaurant that merits your attention. The menu is Italian but imaginative and always has something that is a surprise. We've been many times and never been disappointed. I'd recommend a specific dish but the menu has enough variety that it may not be there when you go, but if you want a good but "fun" salad order Salvatore's salad, always fresh, delicious and imaginative. We prefer the front room to the back."

  • "Based on yelp reviews I thought I would be in for a treat. Sadly mistaken. Called to confirm my reservations but when my friends and I got there they sat us right in the front bar area right by the entrance which was freezing. My friend even kept her voat on. When we asked the server if there was any room in the main dining room because of the cold she just said no theres not instead of checking first. No apology or offer to move us if another table became available. 10 minutes later another group who did NOT have reservations were immediately sat in the main dining room. Did you not just tell me there was nothing back there? And now on to the food veal was overly salted and the panna cotta tasted and looked like it came fresh out of a can"

  • "The food was good. Portions were small, but they may have been small because I ordered from the restaurant week menu. Other than small portions, it was a positive experience."

  • "We waited too long to go back. Don't you! Chef Sal Corea's food (the freshest salads, the just-right pasta (were those chocolate nibs on top), perfectly cooked fish, the desserts and the very reasonable wine list prices are just what you want them to be. The service, the smiles, the PLACE …. borders on perfect (with no pretension). Sign up for their special events - Sal's Spring Menu Kick-off comes up on March 19th. Get in there and Enjoy!!"

  • "Dinner only in this small, intimate ambiance with the most creative cuisine by owner/chef Salvatore. The menu changes seasonally and is inventive and delicious across the board. Worth going out of one's way for this jem - it never fails to surprise and delight."
