Diner Reviews
  • "Wonderful Italian cuisine. Detailed delicious meals"
    Dined on 4/15/2014
  • "For foods that you would never think of pairing and could never make at home, Alloro provides a stellar gastronomic experience. Some of the menu offerings sound like they are straining to be 'different,' but chef-owner Salvatore clearly has an imagination that is coupled with an excitement about and knowledge of what tastes absolutely wonderful. The food is satisfying but never heavy. Presentation is artistic without being 'precious.' The menu changes seasonally, and currently is divided into two sections: one for "The Traditionalist" (which is still a fresh take on classics) and one for the "Adventurist." Yes, it is pricey, but for a special occasion, Alloro is our local favorite."

  • "Always a great meal. The staff is welcoming and friendly. You feel like you've walked into a good friend's kitchen when you arrive. Best of all, they are always glad to see our kids. But really, what keeps us coming back is the food. Always surprising, always inventive and always, always delicious. And on this visit, we were happy to see that the owners have worked hard to upgrade their wine list. Once again, we left satisfied and talking about the great meal we'd had. We'll definitely be back."

  • "Alloro is not a run of the mill family restaurant. It offers unusual but delicious dishes using different ingredients. The eggplant parmigiana appetizer is the best!!"

  • "The service was great. The food is balanced just right. I love that. The quail rigatoni with truffle and orange zest started out like a blind date. I looked at it and immediately judged it as not suitable for my taste. I took a bite but carefully didn't incorporate every element of its parts in fear of having an anti-climactic drawn out evening together. This dish is of the sort like a lot of people that gets better when you truly get to experience everything it is."

  • "Have dined here many times and it is always excellent food and service. Tuna tartar was wonderful as well as the lasagna."

  • "This is certainly a little hidden gem on the Upper East Side. Food is really excellent, service friendly and pleasant and not too noisy (a big plus). They do occasionally run out of things but are accommodating in suggesting substitutions. It is certainly a very pleasant experience dining here."

  • "My friend and I tried Alloro last week. I arrived first, and was seated at a table in the front of the restaurant, in front of a vented window to the kitchen. All of a sudden, I began to feel this very uncomfortable vibration throughout my body, almost as if a huge 18 wheeler was parked right outside with its engine running...or as if the subway was running right beneath me, without ever passing. Needless to say, it was quite unsettling for me. The chef finally figured out that the vibrations were coming from the exhaust fan in the kitchen! I politely asked to be moved to the back of the restaurant, and the chef obliged, although noone came to help me move...until I decided to move myself. The food was good, different, but not for me."

  • "The menu at Alloro is always interesting and the imaginative dishes usually work well. For example , the Tuna tartare in am arugula sauce with candied tomatoes and capers was quite good , as was the poached salmon unusually served over a buffalo mozzarella purée. Although it took us a while to be seated for our reservation, once the meal began, the service,as always, was warm, friendly and well timed."

  • "I took some family there who were in town for the weekend. The food was fantastic and the service great."

  • "Alloro has been open for perhaps three years and in that time Salvatore and Gina have really established a restaurant that merits your attention. The menu is Italian but imaginative and always has something that is a surprise. We've been many times and never been disappointed. I'd recommend a specific dish but the menu has enough variety that it may not be there when you go, but if you want a good but "fun" salad order Salvatore's salad, always fresh, delicious and imaginative. We prefer the front room to the back."

  • "Based on yelp reviews I thought I would be in for a treat. Sadly mistaken. Called to confirm my reservations but when my friends and I got there they sat us right in the front bar area right by the entrance which was freezing. My friend even kept her voat on. When we asked the server if there was any room in the main dining room because of the cold she just said no theres not instead of checking first. No apology or offer to move us if another table became available. 10 minutes later another group who did NOT have reservations were immediately sat in the main dining room. Did you not just tell me there was nothing back there? And now on to the food veal was overly salted and the panna cotta tasted and looked like it came fresh out of a can"

  • "My husband and I went to Alloro with high hopes that we might have found a lovely, local Italian. It was sadly untrue. The food was good, but nothing special - your typical Italian fare that is a step above a Pizzaria and many steps below Morini, Caravaggio and other local Italian places. The server was sweet and nurturing. What disappointed me most was the dingy atmosphere. The back room was dark - and not in a romantic kind of way. But dark and dingy, as if the restaurant was 5 years behind in renovations. Likewise, I found the faux treatment of the walls tacky and made me feel as though I was in a bad episode of "Design on a Dime." While dinner for 2 at a $150 including wine was great value, that's all it felt like."

  • "We waited too long to go back. Don't you! Chef Sal Corea's food (the freshest salads, the just-right pasta (were those chocolate nibs on top), perfectly cooked fish, the desserts and the very reasonable wine list prices are just what you want them to be. The service, the smiles, the PLACE …. borders on perfect (with no pretension). Sign up for their special events - Sal's Spring Menu Kick-off comes up on March 19th. Get in there and Enjoy!!"

  • "The food was good. Portions were small, but they may have been small because I ordered from the restaurant week menu. Other than small portions, it was a positive experience."

  • "Dinner only in this small, intimate ambiance with the most creative cuisine by owner/chef Salvatore. The menu changes seasonally and is inventive and delicious across the board. Worth going out of one's way for this jem - it never fails to surprise and delight."

  • "The Upper East Side is jam-packed with fabulous restaurants, but Alloro really stands out. The food is always superb, with impeccable service."

  • "excellent and delicious. very charming and cozy. food very fresh. the chef comes out of the kitchen to speak with his guests -a very refreshing approach!"

  • "Alloro is a great little place with a comfortable, dimly lit dining room. The food is way above the normal neighborhood fare. In restaurant week they went down a notch but normally it has a creative menu and the food is very, very good."

  • "interesting combinations to create great tasting dishes ,interested service caring owners"

  • "My online planning for a birthday weekend in NYC culminated with a memorable dinner at Alloro, thanks to the superb food, excellent service and warm atmosphere. We will happily return on future trips and recommend it to friends as an Italian treasure."

  • "The restaurant was wonderful with a friendly staff. The food was delicious and the owner chief stop to each table to chit chat. The only thing is that the restaurant itself is small and I felt to close to my neighbor couple and felt like I had to talk over them. Overall I would go back."

  • "The food was great, the staff attentive and the restaurant was perfectly romantic"

  • "A wonderful staff. Intimate room. Food of the highest quality and plentiful -- the gnocchi, saltimboca, pumpkin soup, and cheese tray. Complemented by the Montepulciano. It was our first time at Alloro and everything about the experience was terrific."

  • "They were extremely accommodating of my dietary needs and the food was unparalleled. It has instantly become my go-to restaurant when I visit NYC."

  • "We tried this relative newcomer on Saturday Night., hoping it would be a smash. While the menu was interesting, the overall experience was disappointing. FOOD: Inconsistent...Some dishes were great but others were mediocre and one was inedible (bucatini in a salty cheese sauce.) SERVICE: Inattentive/inexperienced...We had to ask 3 times for extra plates to share some of the appetizers. And when we said the bucatini was not good all she did was offer to bring over some red sauce to add to it. She did offer for us the option to order a different dish, and did not remove the charge for the dish from the bill even though it went mostly uneaten. ATMOSPHERE: Charming enough, but crowded and hot (and then too cold once they opened the window)."

  • "Whether you just want traditional Italian fare or the beauty, whimsy, and inventiveness of a great molecular gastronomist this place has it. I live in the West Village where there is no shortage of great restaurants, but I wish Alloro was located here. I make sure to dine there any time I'm on the upper east side. You should too. It's simply the best Italian restaurant on the upper east side."

  • "Have eaten here several times and are never disappointed. Food preparation is outstanding! Can't wait for our next visit."
    Dined on 1/25/2014
  • "We have liked Alloro's inventive Italian food in the past but this time there was a little too much "invention". When I order traditional red sauce dishes that is what I want. When I order inventive I want inventive. But, please let me know which it is! Don't modify my lasagna or bolognese without telling me. Otherwise, it was as good as always - nice, comfortable neighborhood place with very good service"

  • "Definitely one of my favourite Italian restaurants in the city. Salvatore, the chef, is a pure artist. I am a regular customer and tried most of the dishes he makes. Food is always high quality and delicious. High end Italian cousine coupled with a unique combination of ingredients and an excellent dish presentation."

  • "This is without doubt the worst diner I have ever had! Ruïned our new year's eve which we had carefully plannend months ago. Although Savatore had all the right ingredients on the table he proved completely unable to cook a decent meal with them. What a dissaster."

  • "This restaurant is warm and welcoming. The owners and staff are very personable and the service is excellent. And for the food, it is outstanding - very fresh, deliciously prepared with excellent presentation. You really can't ask for more than Alloro gives!"

  • "Great food, great service! The perfect experience! A great neighborhood gem! Every aspect of the evening was 5 star. Very relaxing, quiet, wonderful time. Will return to Alloro many more times! Excellent wine selection. A very complete menu, with offerings for everyone's palate."

  • "The management is very attentive to what goes on in this restaurant, and the staff seems to have been there for a long time. The food is delicious and is presented beautifully. The restaurant is small, but they have avoided the temptation to cram tables close together, so the experience is like dining in a pleasant home. We have been there many times, two people, four and sometimes six. It is always good."

  • "Everyone else already knows about Allora but it was a great find for us. From the first word to the last bite everything was great - fine, personal service and wonderful food (salmon for me, pork chop for him and 4 chocolates). Clearly a group of people who put their hearts into the restaurant. We will be back soon."
