Diner Reviews
  • "Very fresh and juicy oysters and crab legs. **Note that they only had orange juice from Florida Fresh (cartons displayed everywhere) and no other fruit juices. *The ad on the website stated various freshly squeezed juices but that is not accurate*. I was looking forward to the fruit juices (not much of a drinker), so was sorely disappointed. The cakes are so, so but the desert arts are to die for, especially pecan tart. Lunch offerings of beef and fish are mediocre, but breakfast foods, including lox is very good. Very good salads with shrimp. A bit wary to recommend to others based on inaccurate advertising..."

  • "Second time dining here but first time with the salad and dessert buffet. I epically enjoyed the salad bar as a compliment to my BQ rib dinner."

  • "This is one of the best keep secrets. Don't let the location fool you, it's not your everyday hotel restaurant. Service, quality of food and prices make this the best keep secret in North brook."

  • "Our brunch was excellent. The waiters never let our champagne glasses get below half full. The seafood was really good and the prime rib was tasty and juicy. It was a great place to celebrate a birthday at our table of 6. We will be back for the unlimited champagne and mimosas!"

  • "Great food, excellent service and atmosphere quiet and friendly. Server lady provided great service. Knowledgeable, prompt and great personality. All 3 of us were delighted with the total experience."

  • "My wife and I have been to Allgauer's a number of times and have always had a nice, quiet enjoyable meal. This last time we were there two and a half hours eating and talking and the server was there when we wanted and left us to our evening the rat of the time. The service was exactly what we wanted."

  • "Salad, soup, and vegetables were great. I had the shrimp and strip steak which were just OK, Couldn't taste the shrimp because of the cheese and heavy coating. the steak would have been better smaller but thicker so it could have been better prepared rare."

  • "The food was worse than mediocre. There was hardly anyone else in the restaurant and I can see why. They should close this restaurant."

  • "Celebrating my mothers 76th birthday... She had her heart set on prime rib and Allgauer's has it on their regular dinner menu, so for us was perfect... The prime rib was very good, loved the veggies... The waiter was very nice, not overwhelming... The service was very well executed, even after the restaurant started to get busy... And they brought a Chocolate cake with a candle without requesting it!! I would come back..."

  • "I read the reviews before we went. Remembered how it was 20 years ago and hoped for the best. Every presentation was spot on, and the array of choices was delightful. But execution on flavor and quality was definitely lacking. The lobster was tough and flavorless, as was the prime rib. The snow crab legs tasted great but were ice cold and would have been better steamed. Salads were very good, as was the desert table. The Oysters Rockefeller weren't anything special, but the raw oysters tasted fresh and firm. The service was nice. If the food tasted better, it would be worth the price. Sadly, the buffet did not deliver. Much less than expected for dining in a Hilton. Food presentation=great Food quality=not so great Service=good"

  • "This is in the Hilton hotel in the Northbrook area. The food was very good. It's not a big place, nor overly fancy but that was okay with us. The riverfront (I believe the Chicago River) was out the window, which was a nice view. My overall judgment on a place is, would I go back? In this case, yes."

  • "We go to Allgauer's every year to celebrate our friend's Birthday and we always have a wonderful experience. We got a table right by the window, it wasn't overly crowded and was very quiet. The crab claws and shrimp are outstanding, as are all of the fresh salads they make. The wait staff is very attentive (the champagne & orange juice was flowing freely!) and the food quality is quite good."

  • "Quality of food is awful. Bread was served two different types, at first they found in the kitchen pretzel bread, then something else... From 3 glasses of ice tea one was clear nice color of tea two other ones strange color and foggy. Ribs was dried not BBQ, well they have some BBQ souse on it, but meat was dried out on half of the slab. Would not recommend to go there..."

  • "My husband and I have been wanting to dine here for a long time given how long it's been around. Service was fine, nothing special. Food tasted and was presented like a banquet, I would have expected more when I am paying $34.00 for a small filet."

  • "Entertained five guests, all of whom had some issue at the brunch. Hair in orange juice, Syrup machine clogged up, a number of COLD entrees, etc. Disappointing as it is an expensive brunch with a LARGE tip automatically added to the bill. I would not return or recommend. Wait staff was attentive and made effort to rectify issues as they arose."

  • "Went for my birthday this past Friday. So sadly disappointed because it used to be great. We were there for the 1st seating so the food was freshly put out. Oysters Rockafeller were cold. Seems they were precooked and the oysters were actually very hard - overcooked. The lobster halfs were okay, but the snow crab, although good size, the meat was mushy and not firm. Had to scrape the meat out with my finger! Prime beef was fine. Did not have enough appetite to try anything else although it looked good. Great dessert table. I ordered a frozen margarita which was served in a common water glass?? At least the water was served in a goblet. The only thing that saved my night was the friendly, chatty people I met at the dessert bar."

  • "We were a party of 6. Two people had the ribs, 3 had the salmon and 1 had a vegetarian dish. All were very pleased with their choices. The ribs portion was so large that those who had that entree each took what remained home in a meal box. The abbreviated Sunday menu, which included the salad bar and dessert bar, was very fairly priced. The wait staff was attentive."

  • "My husband and I had our 5th wedding anniversary on December 15th, however had to delay our celebration until the last weekend of January. Made reservations at the restaurant and had a very enjoyable dinner. I had the prime rib, very good and cooked perfectly. He had the ribeye and enjoyed it very much. The service was on point, overall a very enjoyable experience. Thank you."

  • "Tucked into the Hilton on Milwaukee Avenue, Allgauer's has a pretty view of the waterfront including a lovely ice sculpture which the staff creates every weekend. People tend to overlook the restaurant which has been there many years. Setting is lovely, servers are efficient and friendly and the food well prepared. The steak was the same quality as the steak my husband had a week earlier at almost exactly twice the price. Though the menu isn't extensive, there's a nice selection so everyone should be able to find something appealing. They offer special on Friday and Sunday nights as well as a fabulous brunch on Sundays."

  • "Service outstanding from the front desk to the wait staff. However, some of the seafood was lacking! Especially the lobster. Size and quality looks poor especially for the price. The prime rib and raw oyster was very good! Fresh and prime rib cook perfectly! The desert table lack quality cakes!. Expected better quality desert items for the price of the buffet!"

  • "Have been there 3 times once at Thanksgiving, twice Christmas . Dined at 12pm and there was not alout of dinners there. Times before were ok but this time I think they put too much food out and it was not as fresh as I would have liked. The breakfast items were good but the dinner items were not. Started to pickup after 12:30 but I still did not enjoy."

  • "We went here for dinner on Christmas Day. The restaurant is beautiful and the employees very friendly and thoughtful. We had a lovely table overlooking a little stream with ice sculptures outside the windows. The wine was disappointing, and was quickly changed when I said I didn't like the taste. The food is not modern or innovative, but it tasted good and we enjoyed it. We didn't have the salad bar, as the meal comes with a salad and that with the entree is more than enough for a meal. All in all, an enjoyable experience and conveniently located."

  • "Overlooking the DesPlaines River, this restaurant continues a tradition of great food, prepared and presented in a first-rate fashion. There were few diners the night I was there with a group of 3. The service times were a bit slow and not particularly attentive, but the food was excellent. A party in an adjoining room may have occupied the small number of wait staff too much."

  • "My wife and I utilized a coupon that she had received and dined at Allgauer's on a Friday at 6:00 PM. Their seafood buffet is only offered on Friday nights (I believe) and we arrived before the crowd. The assortment of appetizers, entrees, and deserts was just beyond belief. The presentation was phenomenal and the taste was too! I started out with a small sweet potato salad and some salmon, followed by a couple of halved lobsters, prime rib, and some macadamia crusted grouper. My favorites were the lobster, and prime rib but I saw some snow crabs that I might have to try next time. My wife enjoyed the different salads, lobster tails, prime rib, and brought me some chocolate dipped strawberries that were to die for! WE WILL BE BACK!"

  • "The food was excellent, but the service was soooooo slow one could have starved to death while waiting. If it had been crowded, we could understand, but it wasn't -- only 3 other tables had diners, so we really don't know what was going on except our waiter was very slow at doing everything."
    Dined on 11/10/2013
  • "We were very disappointed. First, the waiter never presented a drink menu, there was a noticeable language barrier, we had to repeat requests multiple times. Food was served cold, my daughter's steak was over done, My husband's pasta was mushy. Atmosphere was geriatric to say the least. It felt like a nursing home dinning room, with equivalent food quality. A restaurant that has seen much better days. We won't be back."
    Dined on 11/9/2013
  • "Grilled poached salmon was outstanding. Large portion, fish was fresh and moist. Excellent spinach and artichoke dip with flavorful but not overpowering garlic. Thinly toasted bagel slices was a nice change of pace with this appetizer."

  • "While we enjoyed the brunch, we were disappointed to see they switched from King Crab Legs to Snow Crab Legs. A lot more work for a lot less meet. That is one of the reasons we never minded paying the hefty price for brunch. Their service is great and our server, Rosa, has served us before and is so pleasant and helpful. She makes customers want to come back. Bring back the King Crab Legs and you will see us in there again!!"

  • "When we arrived we were seated promptly even though there was a large wedding party in the property. The hostess gave us extra service to find us a requested quiet table. Warm rolls and water were served almost as soon as we were seated. Our waiter arrived at the table soon after, but gave us ample time to peruse the menu. The entrees were served soon after the salad plates had been removed. The food was well prepared, but the beef medallions had more cracked pepper than my wife would have preferred - - a matter of personal taste. Throughout the meal we had attentive, but not excessive attention from our waiter. We would be happy to recommend this restaurant to others."

  • "The food, service and environment are great. However, we were a bit set back by the age of the patrons. We were there at 7pm on a Saturday evening and everyone seemed to be over the age of 70. Nothing against that, but if your going for a more upbeat atmosphere you will be disapointed. We asked the hostess and she said it was very typical of their patrons. All in all a very good menu and meal."
