A word from All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Diner Reviews
  • "I enjoyed the full experience at All Spice. Friendly staff, good service, good food. And it was priced right for what you got (slightly higher price than other good restaurants, but also better quality service and food). Without the Michelin star it would have been a great find. However, our reference for a one Michelin star restaurant is the Pruned Horse and it doesn't get close (granted also not in price). So, in conclusion, I recommend to visit if you are looking for a good intimate diner experience, I recommend against it if you are sampling the Michelin star."

  • "Best, best dinner. Really quality of food on a par with best Paris has to offer. Irritating that cell phones are allowed? Intimate setting and ring, ring, ring very distracting!"

  • "We had a fabulous meal. Our appetizers "Ode to my wife" and Pork belly were delicious, presentation was beautiful. I had the lamb and my husband had the wild boar. My lamb tenderloins were perfectly cooked and so flavorful. My husband's wild boar was served in a lovely tureen, braised with just the right amount of fennel and coriander to flavor the meat and sauce. Our dessert, the dark chocolate kulfi was like a gelato served with macadamia nut brittle. We brought our own special bottle of wine, but I noticed they had wine by the glass on draft. Shoshanna, the chef's wife and her father make it themselves. Service was wonderful, and Shoshanna and our waiter kept checking to see how we were enjoying our meals. We will return."

  • "Eclectic menu with something for everyone. Food was well prepared and portions satisfactory. $15/bottle corkage fee not listed on website. Servers were attentive but very ammature and uninterested. Very small dining space so expect noise to travel. No wait to be seated with OT reservation and free on site parking was a nice feature. Chairs are large but very hard, so be prepared to get up and walk around if having more than one course. Unfortunately there was no tasting menu option; we would have been very interested in smaller portions and more selections but prices were prohibitive of that with the current menu design. Pretty & colorful decor was a nice change to some of the sterile & boring restaurants in town. Worth at least one visit."

  • "All Spice is a special experience, better now than it was two years ago, with beautiful and delicious dishes adding an Indian touch to French cuisine, topped off with attentive but relaxed service, well deserving of its Michelin star. I highly recommend this classy and still homey place. We can't wait to go back."

  • "Discovered AllSpice I'm sure like mant others via the TV show Check please bay area. It was a dining delight. Had 3 appetizers.... the friitter, ode to my wife 2 salad & the scallops. i would order them all over again. We both ordered the short Rib and it melts in your mouth. A little pricey, but it was a special occasion birthday and worth it.....about 150.00 for two plus tip. That was 3 apps, 2 entrees and 2 desserts."

  • "We had some amazing dishes on our first trip to Allspice. The crispy potato gnocchi and the pan seared sea bass with star anise and fennel were real stand-outs. For desert, the salted creme de caramel was superb. All of the dishes had interesting and unusual flavor combinations, without being self-conscious or overbearing. Well worth a trip to San Mateo for the experience. Lovely hostess, attentive and professional service, and a blessedly quiet ambiance."

  • "Everything was fantastics...the best meal my husband and I have had in a long time!!"

  • "A bit disappointing this time.It has been over a year since we last ate there. The lamb was not up to expectations, too much fat on it.It was not properly cleaned before. Fish was good but very small with most of the plate taken up by the sauce. Not in proportion for the eye, chicken appetizer - kebab( ?) was a bit dry and for my taste bready. Can't even remember dessert something with chocolate but it was not memorable. Reasonable wine list and our wine was nice."

  • "Once again, All Spice blew us way with fantastic service, great wine suggestions to pair with each course, and fresh inventive cuisine. Stand out dishes were the scallops with sea beans & strawberries, the crispy pork belly with decadent potato purée & radicchio, and the tender smokey short rib. Dessert was perfect also, a creme caramel with spiced nut brittle. Perfect way to celebrate our ten year anniversary!"

It's the go-to place for special occasions orfor guests who like warm and unique places. Staff is relaxed, attentive, and friendly like none other. Thank you, Shoshona and Sashin."

  • "This was our second visit and we brought friends. We enjoyed the charming dining space...intimate in small quarters but private...colors and decorative rooms were lovely. We shared our appetizers and enjoyed all the tastes and spices and beautiful presentations. Our waiter Rennen was pleasant and helpful. We loved the octopus! We had the braised boar, duck breast, wagyu beef, and gnocchi. Great Flavors and presentations. We saved room for a few desserts...chocolate kulki, Creme brûlée and a wonderful "terrarium" treat that hit the spot. This all made for a great night to enjoy with good friends. Thank you!"

  • "After many failed last minutes attempts, we finally planned ahead and got a reservation. It was well worth the wait. The food is delicious - definitely try the lamb, even if you normally don't like lamb. Wonderfully seasoned and cooked. Not a hint of the gaminess that usually keeps me away from lamb. We will be returning - this time, we will make our reservations far in advance. The service is wonderful. My only complaint is that a nearby couple was a bit too loud, but that's not the restaurant's fault."

  • "This is one of those places you'd never know about with the internet. It's tucked away in an alley of sorts, and it is sexy/funky. I loved the imaginative dishes and the service was great. A great find for sure."

  • "I have motored doen El Camino a million times and never knew this restaurant existed. Sophisticated yet simple food preparation and presentation. Octopus appetizer to drool over, wild boar, duck and spare ribs very succulent. The ambience met the quality of the food. After I scrape together enough money I will certainly go back again"

  • "We came here for my birthday after hearing so many wonderful things about it, and it did not disappoint. In fact, the evening was one of our most memorable dining experiences ever. The restaurant is located in a clapboard house tucked away from El Camino Real and the ambience is very intimate. The food was unsurpassed with each selection imaginative and surprising. Expect an array of tastes with subtle Indian notes - numerous sauces, bits of garnish - that combine with the main ingredients to create something greater than the sum of their parts. Service was gracious and unobtrusive. The wait staff seem to know they are part of something special. We plan to return for our next visit just to try every single appetizer on the menu."

  • "We have been coming here for Valentines for the past few years. Previous years, I would definitely give the Restaurant 5 stars, but this last year it wasn't quite as good as we were hoping for for the $. In previous years not only was the food better, but the food was more exotic and fancy (like Venison, quail eggs, etc). This year it felt not only more $$, but also felt a bit boring (like typical beef, vegetables, etc) . Don't get me wrong, the food was really good...just maybe didn't measure up to what we were expecting. We have nothing bad to say about All Spice and really enjoy the service and atmosphere. Buy I would by lying if I didn't feel a little disappointed with the actual food choices this year for the Valentines dinner."

I had "Kufli" chocolate ice cream(unique flavor) and my husband had homemade ice cream(three different flavors). All the herbs, spices and aromas were like a beautiful and harmonious symphony.Service was excellent . The host and owner along with staff gave us a warm welcome and made us feel special. We are looking forward to come back and definitely recommending this place to our friends.Special thanks to the chef .He is an artist I dare to say not just a chef!"

  • "From the location in a Victorian house nestled between two strip plazas, you get the feeling you're in for something a little different and you are. The food is a mix of unusual flavors which surprise and satisfy. The amuse bouch was a white wine gelee with habernos. Service is comfortable so you don't feel rushed and can enjoy the food and conversation at your own pace. Definitely merits more visits to try more of the items now only if we could make reservations easier to come by."

  • "They accommodated my dietary restrictions (gluten, dairy, egg and soy free) with grace. I let them know when they called to confirm the reservation and they were prepared when I ordered to guide me through and modify as needed. All Spice is off the hook!"

  • "We always love this restaurant. While it has an Indian influence in the spices used, it is not your typical Indian restaurant. The menu is very different and very creative. They also have a good wine list. I cannot remember the name of the chocolate dessert I had, but it was like eating a very cold chocolate truffle, only the size of an icecream scoop! Yummy!"

  • "We've been here several times over the years, and it just keeps getting better (which is difficult to fathom). Just took my dad and mother-in-law here for a special dinner, and they couldn't believe how good it was. Still talking about it, actually. Annoyed they got a Michelin star, though. Now everyone will know! :-)"

  • "We chose All Spice at the last minute for a co-worker dinner, and we were blown away by the amazing food, the charm, and the wonderful service. All Spice is tucked away in a restored Victorian off El Camino in San Mateo. Don't bother looking for the cute house from the street - it's completely obscured by newer buildings. We shared the roasted octopus appetizer and a deconstructed paella. The octopus was the star of the meal, so good that someone ordered it for dessert. I had the duck with chestnut puree and cherry sauce - beautifully roasted and a perfect portion size to leave room for the snowglobe ice cream sundae, an amazing combination of flavors: orange flower, chocolate, espresso, pomegranate, mac nuts, and cocoa puffs."

  • "Everything about the experience exceeded the review in Bay Area Checkbook. Only caveat was the special coffee. Made curious as to what a $40.00 cup of coffee might be, I tried it...blaah, what a waste of money."
