A word from All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

Given this place has a Michelin star, I expected more. The food was good, but hardly great. I ordered the bread fritter, which was a cheese filled rolled crepe served on under-done beans in a fairly standard Indian sauce. My main course was the ravioli - four pockets in a pasta strip filled with what should have been very distinctive fillings, but I couldn't tell one from another. Mainly tasted the pasta. Not bad, Just not worthy of a Michelin star.

Lovely, cozy little venue. Food and service are very, very good overall but on this visit I adjusted my rating slightly for the dry shortrib entree and for waiters clearing plates before all the diners at our table were finished...big faux pas!

There are some amazing dishes being turned out by a passionate team. Not to be missed if you are in the area. Pork belly appetizer has so many lovely flavors and everything on the plate is perfect. The Sunchoke soup is not to be missed. The Sea Bass and the Risotto were also delightful. Can't wait to try the entire menu!

The food and service at All Spice has always been fabulous and deserves their Michelin star. Our only disappointment was the Bordeaux blend from "Austria" we had which was quite unappetizing and not what I would have expected from a Michelin star restaurant.

This was a delightful experience. Quiet - so good for either romance or business conversation. We stayed for hours. My only concern was our waiter was so eager for us to order, including not letting us order appetizers prior to ordering dinner - said the kitchen liked to see the entire order at once. SO that didn't feel like high end service. Also he kept coming back for drink orders, and "are you ready to order yet"...so I felt rushed, and finally at the end asked if he needed our table. He said he would check. When he did not, we just relaxed a bit more, but we did not feel welcomed to sit, relax, enjoy a drink and appetizer, then settle on the main course, etc. BUT...the food and atmosphere is SO creative, I would recommend.

It's so easy to slow down and savor each bite, while enjoying the moment with your companion(s). I lived the thinking behind the combinations of flavors in the dishes.

I applaud All Spice for what it is trying to be - a restaurant in an area somewhat devoid of fine dining. But the menu is reads more like what you'd expect to find in a spice pantry - every dish was laden with excessive ingredients and flavors, with no real focus to the final preparation. So while it is clear that the chef can cook and is creative, the execution didn't work. For the prices being charged, there are simply better options.

My wife and I have started a tradition of coming here for our anniversary last year but honestly, we should come here more often. Considering the fact that this is a Michelin Star rated establishment, pricing is quite reasonable compared to the "high profile competition". This time for appetizers, we had slow cooked pork belly and scallops presented so artistically it was a shame to disassemble it. For main course, we had the sea bass and lamb loin. All of them were very satisfying except for the fact that the scallops were a bit dry. Now for the sweet tooth in all of us, their signature dessert Kulfi is to die for and their home made ice creams and caramel custard will whet your sweet appetite no doubt. Foodie Heaven!

Wife, son, and myself came here for my birthday. We brought some wine and corkage was priced moderately. We shared 4 appetisers, each had our own entree and dessert. Everything was delicious. Of special note were the seafood appetisers. My wife had the fish dish which she loved. I had lamb and my son had venison. Both were very good. Desserts were also very good. My complements to the chef and staff at the restaurant.

The Chef uses ingredients that are top quality and are combined in ways that are creative and so flavorful. The service was excellent both times as well..professional & friendly at the same time. This place exceeded my expectations - it's haute cuisine in a part of San Mateo you don't expect, a victorian home set back from the street amidst strip malls and the busy stretch of El Camino between 92 and downtown. The food is world class, the indian flavors are familiar but this is not indian food - artfully giving us a blend with local, California grown produce and butchery. If there's anything at all to point out, it's that they need to step up the wine list - it's small and uninteresting. The place is very classy - with 231 Ellsworth now closed, is this now the finest dining for San Mateo?

A unique dining spot, tucked away off El Camino in San Mateo, that serves a "New American exotic" menu inspired by French and Californian cuisine. Try a carafe of their own wine, and don't skip dessert. Excellent service in an intimate and cozy ambience in a small house. I'll be returning, again and again.

All Spice continues to be my wife and I's go-to spot and why not? They never disappoint while keeping it fresh & interesting. As always, everything was tasty, but the dish that stood out this time was the dessert...a flan-like custard with a piece of peanut-bacon-brittle laid atop. Upon arrival at All Spice for our mommy-daughter date, my mom & I were greeted by a hostess who opened the front door with a smile & a "welcome." We were ushered to a window table & offered menus. Even though my mom does not eat red meat & most seafood, there were plenty of tasty-looking options for her to choose from. As for me, who eats almost everything, I had trouble choosing. Eventually, my mom selected the makhani vegetable pot pie, & I, after consulting with our phenomenal server, Johnny, chose the veal cheeks. We also ordered the Ma Mere Indian bread fritter. With every bite we each fell into a state of euphoria. The food was outstanding, & the service matched! Reservations must be made in advance, though the wait is well worth it!

We loved the unusual salad special (endive-based with blue cheese, nectarines, several distinct sauces, etc.) and especially the appetizer, a chaat with various beans and goat cheese, unlike anything we'd had before; the salted rosemary crème caramel and dark chocolate kulfi for dessert were also outstanding. Our entrees, the lamb loin and seabass, while reasonably tasty, were much less distinctive and thus a touch disappointing in the context of the wonderful starters and desserts. One of the better restaurants in town.
