A word from All Spice – San Mateo

San Mateo’s most exciting restaurant is All Spice, an eclectic, contemporary eatery from Executive Chef Sachin Chopra. Chef Chopra expertly blends the freshness of Californian ingredients with Indian spices to create an entirely new style of cuisine, at once light, familiar and warmly exotic. All Spice is proud to have been awarded a Michelin star, a distinction reserved for cuisine of the very best quality and consistency.

The restaurant is housed in a converted Victorian with beautiful hardwood floors, a fireplace and a variety of architectural details. Each of three intimate dining rooms is decorated in bold, shimmering hues accented with gold. Thirty seats are scattered throughout. Professional service and a thoughtful, moderately priced wine list complement Chopra's dishes.

To book reservations for parties of 5 or more, please call the restaurant directly.

  • "Will return for sure. Fantastic food, cozy ambiance and very strong service. A fine experience"

  • "My husband and son went to All Spice last Sat. We are all foodies and love trying new restaurants. This has been on our list and Im so happy we went. Everything we ordered was amazing. We had 4 appetizers. Salmon, octopus, pork belly and scallops. Loved them all. I had the sea bass which was incredible. I would highly recommend this to anyone who loves a fun and fabulous dinner experience."

  • "Upon arrival at All Spice for our mommy-daughter date, my mom & I were greeted by a hostess who opened the front door with a smile & a "welcome." We were ushered to a window table & offered menus. Even though my mom does not eat red meat & most seafood, there were plenty of tasty-looking options for her to choose from. As for me, who eats almost everything, I had trouble choosing. Eventually, my mom selected the makhani vegetable pot pie, & I, after consulting with our phenomenal server, Johnny, chose the veal cheeks. We also ordered the Ma Mere Indian bread fritter. With every bite we each fell into a state of euphoria. The food was outstanding, & the service matched! Reservations must be made in advance, though the wait is well worth it!"

  • "We loved the unusual salad special (endive-based with blue cheese, nectarines, several distinct sauces, etc.) and especially the appetizer, a chaat with various beans and goat cheese, unlike anything we'd had before; the salted rosemary crème caramel and dark chocolate kulfi for dessert were also outstanding. Our entrees, the lamb loin and seabass, while reasonably tasty, were much less distinctive and thus a touch disappointing in the context of the wonderful starters and desserts. One of the better restaurants in town."

  • "The food was great. Nice ambiance. Very romantic. Really good place for a date."
    Dined on 6/27/2014
  • "The food was inventive and excellent even when there was a kitchen mishap and one entree was not ordered, they went out of their way to remedy the situation- above and beyond. This indicates a well run restaurant which treats the customers well. Will definitely return."

  • "One of the best Michelin rated restaurants we've been to in a while, although more contemporary American fusion than Indian. Food was absolutely delicious, with one Indian entree on the menu (gosht aka "curry") and one appetizer with Indian inspired spices. Consistent excellence from dish to dish. The restaurant is located in an old house, left standing alone in an parking lot after 100 years of development. It's quaint and the perfect setting. This is what Michelin is all about. Blew away Atelier Crenn, La Folie, Aziza, Gary Danko, Boulevard, SPQR, Spruce, and even State Bird (close), although I like those restaurants. I'm VERY picky about food, and I could eat here again, and again, and again."

  • "Very professional staff as we were seated right away and no wait, staff very open to questions (as MIchelin rated)--wait staff is unmatched. Family friendly (no ostentatious looks)=neighbouring table had stroller and "3 kids"= very tolerable and not at all looked down upon by staff. Food excellent--best described as "Indian/French (mostly)/American fusion with incredible French sauces-definitely classically trained chef (i.e. New York, Paris, etc.) Definitely check this hidden gem out! BTW Book way ahead-very intimate place, seats fill quickly."

  • "I've been to All Spice three times now, and I have to say it really is one of my favorite restaurants. Every time is memorable in its own way: each dish is spectacular and despite the Michelin star, the prices have remained reasonable relative to the high quality of each dish. I have no doubt that this is one of, if not the, best restaurants in San Mateo county."

  • "We invited another couple who had not been before. Food is so different and delicious and the atmosphere quite special. Don't rush your meal and enjoy the whole experience."

  • "Food was great -the special appetizer was excellent. The scallops were unique and flavorful. Great wine choices. All with attentive service "

  • "After hearing many good things about All Spice, we were lucky enough to try this creative, delicious restaurant. The atmosphere is warm and inviting--perfect for a romantic meal or special occasion. It is hard to choose from the tantalizing and intriguing menu selections. I enjoyed a scrumptious day boat scallop appetizer and my husband enjoyed a generous octopus salad. Both were plated beautifully and were very good. For our entrees, I had spring lamb two ways and my husband chose a unique wild boar dish. These entrees were exceptional. We enjoyed every bite. We were too full for dessert, but look forward to trying some in our next visit. Service was also very good, adding to an overall wonderful dining experience."

  • "All Spice is a neighborhood gem - a cosy little restaurant; While I am typically skeptical about American-version of Indian fusion cuisine, I think All Spice chef has probably struck the right balance. Serving portions aren't too big, but very yummy - request more spicy, as it may turn out too bland for an indian palate (somewhat an oxymoron to the name of this place :-)"

  • "The restraunt is very noisy and the food was just okay. We had no food choice where we said "Wow this is awesome". I was surprised they were awarded a Michelin star.....it makes no sense. "

  • "Met friends here; we had gazpacho (boring) & scallops (good) for appetizers, the wagyu beef (good), wild boar curry (boring), duck breast (ok), and sea bass (ok), the dark chocolate kulfi (ok) and the snow globe sundae (good). Generally speaking the food was good, with delightfully intricate side bits, as expected for a Michelin 1 star, but nothing really seized the spotlight. Not the food, not the decor, and definitely not the ambiance (tables were crowded together) or service (quite casual, and then we got the bum's rush from the table after 2.5 hours). Prices were a bit lower than 1 star places in NYC ($65/person rather than about $80, no alcohol), but San Mateo rent v. Manhattan? I'd need to forget about the service before I'd return."

  • "this was our 3rd visit and we brought friends. i love that the food is presented so lovely...exceptional are the flavor combinations. and even in the cozy 3 rooms, each table feels like its own private party. service is warm and friendly - notable and informed. we had a great time!"

  • "I was expecting much more from a Michelin starred restaurant. Food was just okay, nothing was memorable. Service was hit and miss. I can't say that I would return. The oddest thing was listening to "Oldies" music piped in through the speakers...?"
    Dined on 5/20/2014
  • "Really poor food, poor service, only beer and wine... This restaurant doesn't come close to the michelin standard. And michelin star aside, it was a very poor experience. Will never go there again, and will tell my friends to avoid it. (There was also a basting brush bristle in our food - but that was fluke, and I am not basing my review on that.)"

  • "Quite a nice surprise of flavors. Unique changing menu and helpful staff to help you through. The soups are amazing. Ode to my Wife Appetizer is a must. Dessert is a must. Give this a try! Fabulous!"

  • "Hard to believe that this warm and welcoming little house is right off El Camino. It is an intimate little gem. Lots of exotic flavors and ingredients and crazy garnishes - like ice plant! Not the place for those who want good ingredients simply prepared, but great fun for everyone else. There is a lot going on here, but the flavors are well-balanced. Bonus - fantastic home-made red wine blend that pairs perfectly with the spices. "

  • "A nice little restaurant with a beautiful decor that is perfect for a quiet dinner. The quality of the food is excellent. I loved the lassi and the wild boar. The octopus us was very good too. I didn't enjoy the sea bass as much but I suppose it is an acquired taste. Overall I would recommend this place."

  • "We love All Spice and always look forward to dining there. Saturday night may have been the first "off" night we've had. The leeks that came with the lamb were a bit chewy and the duck breast wasn't heated through consistently. Other than that, we loved the Halibut special, and highly recommend the "snow globe" for dessert. We also tried Shoshana's wine, and really liked it - went very well with our dishes. It's still high on our list of favorite places to dine."

  • "This restaurant came very highly recommended by one of our foody friends, so we had high expectations when we went to All Spice. My wife and I had the duck confit kebabs and warm chaat for appetizers. The chaat was a very confusing dish - lots of layered flavors mixed with conflicting textures and way too much going on in general - a well overthought dish in our opinion. The duck kebabs were good, but the eggplant that came with it was well over fried and very tough. We then had the spring lamb loin for entrees - what a big disappointment! The lamb loin was totally bland in taste, chewy and greasy - to the point that it was tough to finish the plate. Desert was ok, but not great. I expected A LOT more. We won't be back."

  • "Great food and quaint location/decor, however, food did not live up to the high expectations of a Michelin star restaurant. Very well priced for the quality."

  • "Best meal I've had since the French Laundry a few months ago...and a much better bill at the end"
    Dined on 4/18/2014
  • "I enjoyed the full experience at All Spice. Friendly staff, good service, good food. And it was priced right for what you got (slightly higher price than other good restaurants, but also better quality service and food). Without the Michelin star it would have been a great find. However, our reference for a one Michelin star restaurant is the Pruned Horse and it doesn't get close (granted also not in price). So, in conclusion, I recommend to visit if you are looking for a good intimate diner experience, I recommend against it if you are sampling the Michelin star."

  • "Best, best dinner. Really quality of food on a par with best Paris has to offer. Irritating that cell phones are allowed? Intimate setting and ring, ring, ring very distracting!"
    Dined on 4/8/2014
  • "We had a fabulous meal. Our appetizers "Ode to my wife" and Pork belly were delicious, presentation was beautiful. I had the lamb and my husband had the wild boar. My lamb tenderloins were perfectly cooked and so flavorful. My husband's wild boar was served in a lovely tureen, braised with just the right amount of fennel and coriander to flavor the meat and sauce. Our dessert, the dark chocolate kulfi was like a gelato served with macadamia nut brittle. We brought our own special bottle of wine, but I noticed they had wine by the glass on draft. Shoshanna, the chef's wife and her father make it themselves. Service was wonderful, and Shoshanna and our waiter kept checking to see how we were enjoying our meals. We will return."

  • "Eclectic menu with something for everyone. Food was well prepared and portions satisfactory. $15/bottle corkage fee not listed on website. Servers were attentive but very ammature and uninterested. Very small dining space so expect noise to travel. No wait to be seated with OT reservation and free on site parking was a nice feature. Chairs are large but very hard, so be prepared to get up and walk around if having more than one course. Unfortunately there was no tasting menu option; we would have been very interested in smaller portions and more selections but prices were prohibitive of that with the current menu design. Pretty & colorful decor was a nice change to some of the sterile & boring restaurants in town. Worth at least one visit."
