A word from Alex's Bistro on Reed
Since 1985, Alex's Bistro has created
fresh seasonal cuisine for customers who want to enjoy a taste of European food in a relaxed, bistro setting.

Chef & new owner Daniel Kern, a German-born and trained Chef, is now the driving force behind Alex's Bistro. His cooking has roots going back to his childhood in Stuttgart, Germany.

My philosophy is simple:

We use only fresh and fine ingredients and traditional methods to produce exceptional Food. If you don't see on the menu what you are looking for, just tell me and we will prepare it for you!! That's why we only use all natural meats and sustainable seafood products. Because, I want to know what I am serving you.

  • "I made a reservation for 2 at Alex's Bistro via Open Table this past Tuesday for their wine tasting event. We drove there and arrived at the appointed time. The restaurant door was boarded up. There was nobody inside. We called and got a recording that directed us to leave a message to make a reservation. I contacted the Bistro e-mail directly the next day and found out that it is, indeed, closed. As a result of this, however, we went around the corner and had a wonderful evening, good meal and great company at the bar of the Windward Passage. You can never go wrong with Windward Passage. I do think Open Table needs to update their information. I will think twice before I book through Open Table."

  • "It is truly a pity that the service was so poor, because the food (when it finally arrived) was excellent. We arrived a little before our reservation and we're immediately seated. But they had no menus for us. Twenty minutes later we were finally given menus and rolls. I definitely recommend the not-too-salty onion soup. But then we had to wait 45 more minues before our dinner came out. And the check never did arrive. We finally went to the cash register to request it. Between the noise level and the poor service, we won't go back."

  • "We chose this place last minute for a family dinner the same weekend as OSU graduation. There was a large party in the restaurant and we waited at least 25 minutes before our order was taken. Dinner didn't arrive until we had been there about an hour and ended up entertaining our kids by drawing on the paper covering their tablecloths. 2 of our meat orders were served at the wrong temperature, one that was suppose to be medium rare was well done, and the one was edible."

  • "We had another experience for the best tonight. Our server, Igor, was spot on and made our night. The food at this old world bistro is amazing, fresh and straight forward. Just outstanding!! The lobster, as fresh as it can be and the ribeye, with a coffee rub......just outstanding. We are glad to found this unpretentious place with high quality food. The owner, Daniel, came to our table to make sure, everything was alright and made us feel like family. We will defiantly return,again, with friends. Best place in Columbus."

  • "Lovely dining experience. The bistro feels like the real deal. Wonderful food - even though sauerbraten may not be classically French it was delicious. The wait staff made excellent suggestions throughout the evening and was pleasant and attentive. While the noise level was a tad loud due to a large party, it was not off putting and we will be back soon."

  • "I had the seafood crepes and they weren't very good. The sauce was an "interesting" and somewhat unpleasent combination with the crepes. The crepes themselves were rubbery. My wife had the duck with red cabbage with some kind of fritter. She liked the duck and cabbage but the fritter (or whatever they were) had no taste and was very dry. The service and atmosphere was fine."

  • "Service was not quite as good as usual but the restaurant was very crowded. Maybe they needed another waiter which could have been done because they know how many people are coming. My husband's meal was great. Mine (duck) was so-so. I preferred the duck done the way Alex used to do it.. Too much sauce all over it and accompanying mush was not great. But I like the restaurant, have been going there for many years and plan to come again. Disappointed you no longer serve lunch."

  • "Sea Bass was excellent, Ceasar Salad anchovies had to be requested. Howerver the service was very mediocre. Hostess sat us and informed us they were out of wine menus. The ambience was very poor. We have visited Ales's over the years and no profit has been reinvested in refreshing the interior. Certainly the men's room has not had a fresh coat of paint in over a decade. The first two chairs i tried when I was seated were wobbly and I was concerned they would break. At the end of our meal, it took some extra effort to get a cup of coffee. In summery, a wonderful meal that could have been enjoyed as "carry out". What a wasted opportunity for the restaurant to provide a "romantic experience" to former customers."

  • "A Groupon brought us to Alex's for this first visit, but we'll be back. We had done our research ahead of time, noting that the restaurant offers substantially reduced wine prices on Sundays and Mondays, so we visited on a Monday. We started by sharing an order of the truffled frites (fried in duck fat!), which are to die for. We shared a very pleasant salad (with a modest $1 extra charge for splitting it onto two plates). Given the snow and cold outside, we chose two winter-hearty main courses: boeuf bourguinon and roast duck. Both were quite excellent and lived up to our expectations that these choices would warm us well. The servings are very generous, by the way. Maybe next time we'll have room for dessert."

I would welcome more parking spots, but the restaurant was really full that evening and there is more parking space nearby. We will certainly be back!"

  • "My wife and I dined during restaurant week and both ordered off the prix fixe menu. We understand that these are discounted but should have excellent quality. I ordered the Risotto with Lobster. The lobster was good, a little tough, but good flavor. The risotto was not acceptable as I could not finish the meal. The cheese was so overwhelming and powerful it was sour tasting. My wife had the filet. It was cooked really well but the flavor was lacking. The bread was ok and the service was not good as I had an empty water cup the majority of the night. Not a good experience for us, will choose elsewhere in the future."

  • "Mouth watering menu with many unique options! Mussel appetizer was done to perfection. Escargot appetizer was perfect portion size and delicious. Lobster rissoto was delivered luke warm and was a little pasty. Duck with red cabbage was rated "good" but the skin should have been crispy. Beef Burgundy was generous portion sized but way too salty. Coctails were served in "juice glasses" but with premium pricing. Restaurant was full and quite loud, probably due to Restaurant Week". Service was slow. We will most likely give this spot another try, maybe during the week rather than on a busy weekend."

  • "Same Alex's dining experience with a new owner and new menu. The wine, food and sauces were great. The wine list seemed to have a good range of choices without being over the top. The menu had several dishes we would like to try next time and not just French dishes. We had a group of business men seated next to us which made for a little louder environment and also slowed down our server a little, but they took good care of us. Our food was served in a very timely manor and everything was prepared wonderfully. We will be back soon."

  • "Took my parents to dinner for the 1st time during Restaurant Week. We had early reservations thinking we could get in and out to the CBJ hockey game but I was wrong. We entered the restaurant only to wait for an awkward amount of time to be greeted. Then when we were acknowledged, we had to wait some more to be seated when the restaurant was literally empty. After that annoying first impression, we were seated and ordered the steak, mussels...I don't remember what other entrees we ordered because basically it was forgettable. The server was nice but she left my father's water glass empty for most of the night. We left late for the game after eating a bitter creme brulee. Won't be back with so many other restaurant choices in town."

  • "After going down-hill for a while the new chef and owner, Daniel has made a comeback! The food is excellent and they really care how their guests are treated. Daniel stops at most of the tables during the meal to make sure everyone is satisfied. Thank you for bringing this restaurant back to life!"

  • "We try to visit local restaurants each year for Restaurant Week. Usually, we will pick the one with the best menu and ambience. This year we chose Alex's Bistro for two reasons: 1. We had gone there a year ago by sheer chance. The restaurant we wanted to go to for a night out was absolutely packed with a 20 minute wait and, frankly, it was very stuffy in there on an August evening. So, we went around the corner and had dinner and cocktails at Alex's Bistro. We loved it. 2. The menu for Restaurant Week chosen by Alex's was extremely enticing. We ate t the bar, which is our preference. The service was great, the food, marvelous, and our attendant even flamed my husband's creme brule tableside. My goodness! What a treat!"

  • "Under new ownership, Alex's has been reborn to it's former glory and then some. The menu is creatively inspired, the food exceptionally prepared, and Ali a fantastic server and host. A number of old favorites (think caeser salad and crepes) remain, but newer touches (think lobster risotto and escargot in a delicate cream sauce) and added. The wine list is very comfortable with ample selections; there is a nice touch in that they do not overwhelm, just have two or three in a wide range of wines. Deserts are worth the wait, so do not fill up on the delicious bread. All in all, an out of the park homer."

  • "Alex's Bistro is essentially a French restaurant with a German influence from Chef Daniel. This was our first visit (but certainly not our last). We started out with the Mussels Marinière and nearly filled up with bread used to soak up the wonderful broth. My wife then had the Spaghetti Bolognaise, which was very meaty and I had the Pork Schnitzel “Vienna Style” which brought back fond memories of our travels in Germany. Both dishes were delicious and the portions huge. Come hungry or plan to take some home. We also sampled the Goulash, which was one of the specials from "German Night" (every Wednesday). After sampling the Goulash, we know we will be coming back for German Night on a routine basis."

Wonderful atmosphere and also very comfortable...The highlight of the evening was when Daniel, the Owner/Chef came to our table to introduce himself and also brought champagne.   • "A few months ago we visited and were sorely disappointed by the food and the service. We heard the German chef was back and tried one more time. Come to find out he bought the restaurant from the retiring Alex and has brought it back to the way it used to be. Wonderful food and great service. (We even saw Alex dining there!) We will be back."
