Diner Reviews
  • "We were celebrating our 14 year old's birthday (he is a bit of a foodie). I myself am very sensitive to well prepared food and service having been a chef and owner of a catering company for 33 years. Most steak houses do not put the attention to presentation that Alexander's does. The appetizers were stunning, but there was a major flaw. The King Crab was mealy and overcooked. The porterhouse was the finest I had seen in the way of presentation. The bone Marrow lay across the de-boned Tenderloin/Strip Steak. The souffles for desert were gorgeous and fluffy and were available for order at the end of the meal, I would highly recommend Alexander's to any one who appreciates fine dining with an effort of artistic interpretation."

  • "Third visit in about a year; service and steaks consistently topnotch. House Cabernet very good; tasty without excessive tannins-- just right with beefsteak. Hamachi shooters a mandatory treat. Don't order sweet onions side veg; cloying. The truffled French fries, however, are to die for. Squab is uninspired but pork chop is really fine. Get the mint sorbet dessert and be raptured. House specialty is Japanese Wagyu beef; all of it very good, as are the Omaha steaks. Alexander's now offers a dry-aged Kagoshima steak well worth trying-- even at the price I seriously thought about ordering another."

  • "We went to Alexander's this past Friday for my birthday. Incredible service and food! They really took care of us and we will definitely be back. Thank you for making it a great night for us!"

  • "Went for my fiancée birthday. He got a Japanese wagyu and I got the porterhouse. Appetizers, entrees, desserts, and drinks...one of the most expensive dinners I've had but it was worth it."

  • "This is an upscale restaurant with excellent food, and well, you will have to pay high price too. The japaniese steaks are way over-priced and do not live up to expectations. But everything else was very delicious. Great steaks and appertizers and the salads were seriously the best salads I ever had! They also kept bringing little taste bites here and there; those were very nice surprises and really elevated the diing experience! It was a nice treat for my husband's birthday."

  • "The Hype, the Yelp reviews, how could it be anything but fantastic? It just was. Having the priviledge of living near a world class city of restaurants, this was not one to be rated this high. Everyone has an off-nite this was that nite for the food alone. The service was everything it was rated to be...excellent. Extremely attentive wait staff. The ambiance was very much in line with the SF scene. The food was just not up to the hype. My boyfriend indulged in to quote our server, "the #1 most tender and rare cut of meat in the world", more rare than Kobe. The size cut 3oz (less than a deck of cards) for $140. It was good, but not "great". I had the porterhouse & it was overcooked. $600 tab for 2 . In this town there are better."

  • "Went here with a group of friends for the very first time for my birthday dinner. The ambiance was great and our server was very knowledgeable. They had a birthday card waiting for me and definitely catered the dinner to my birthday and even gave free dessert in the end! which was very kind and thoughtful. The steak was wonderful, we got the tomahawk, shooters for appetizers, and a few other things. The squab was a very small portion but tasteful. The food unfortunately did take a VERY long time to come out, but the staff did try to keep us occupied and eating with small treats from the kitchen which did help. Overall, great for a special occasion and steak, but perhaps snack a little before or order more appetizers."

  • "Great place to dine with great friends as well as customers - we sat upstairs and it was very comfortable. I definitely would return to try more dishes. The surprise tastings from the Chef were excellent! Everyone loved the Hamachi shots, we had to order more. Several of us had the Hyogu Japan Steak and marveled over the exceptional taste. Our server was key to our great experience, very knowledgable and timely."

  • "I would rank the food a five star as well as the service but the prices are just unreasonable. I ate there last night with three friends. Our total charge with tip was $2900 We did a nice flight and wine pairings but came to almost $650 a person. Had the waiter told me sir that pairing is 450 it would have helped. I wish I could have said we drank Silveroak or opus all night. I have eaten at some of the best restaurants in the world and never got that big of a surprise when I picked up the check. My advice would be to skip. Great food and amazing service but there are so many better options in San Francisco. Also the location doesn't really give you the feel That it's special."

  • "Our meal was unforgettable. Everything from the hospitality (hand written note from chef and sparkling wine to celebrate my birthday), to the hamachi amuse, the tiny rolls with marrow butter to the most unique selection of steaks we have ever encountered, there wasn't one thing I would have changed. The Caesar salad was absolutely radical. Don't be afraid, eat the anchovy and the 63 degree egg. I am still thinking about it. If it's in your budget, it's a must try."

  • "From the entrance to the exit everything was perfect. We got seated right away at a table upstairs which gave us a view overlooking the main floor. The the staff was very knowledgeable and attentive (at least 1 person tending to us at all times). Every bite was delicious. I liked the varied portion sizes which gave us the opportunity to try multiple items. The cotton candy was a cute touch and most seemed to enjoy it but honestly the last thing I wanted after the delicacies we ate was a bunch of processed sugar. Although the food was pricey, it was appropriate for the overall quality. I'd skip the truffles next time...not worth $50 for a few shaves in my opinion (basically tasted like mushrooms to me but I'm no expert)."

  • "The bill for 2 was $192 and change...2 glasses of wine, 2 salads, 2 filets & 2 sides. So this is not an inexpensive night out, but the food was very good and the service was great. All-in-all a very nice evening."

  • "We were absolutely enchanted by the service, the fantastic food, and being a beer drinker by the quality and quantity of beer choices. The presentation was first class and so was the helpfulness of the staff, they treat you as the most important customer. Fantastic."

  • "It was everything I hoped for on my birthday.....great service, romantic and they gave me the royal birthday treatment. The restaurant gave me a birthday a card, 1/2 glass of champagne and a beautiful dessert! I only gave the food 4 stars 'cuz I ordered the filet mignon and I had to spit out several bites because it was chewy. That never happens with filet mignon. It is usually so tender it melts in your mouth. Ask to sit upstairs if you want a quite romantic dinner."

  • "Alexander's Steakhouse is ALWAYS spectacular. I am very picky and don't throw the word "perfect" around lightly....but every time I leave Alexander's, I feel like I have just had the perfect meal, the perfect fine dining experience. Sincerely, I mean that. If I were going to take a special person or people out to dinner for one night only in San Francisco, with all the wonderful choices in this city of exceptional dining, I would take them to Alexander's. The service is awesome & you won't find a better wait staff anywhere, they are exceptional. And you don't have to be dressed like the classy staff, I have never felt self conscious going in jeans & a t-shirt. Just a 5 minute walk from AT&T Park."

  • "The customer service was amazing. Everything was so perfect, like a timed event. Two chefs were present in the kitchen- making sure each piece was perfect before it got to the customers tables. Once we got finished with our amazing "shooters" they would exchange the spoons and forks for what was next. Literally, impeccable timing. My filet mignon melted in my mouth, I was really sad when it was over. Everything was cooked to perfection. Some may say a taste of heaven. I still cant stop thinking about the experience, and cant wait to come back. Thank you, Alexanders Bravo, but also I hate you because I know that no other restaurant will come close to matching you."

  • "Service was excellent and food delivered to expectation. Prices are high just a bit higher than expected. Selections on menu were broad enough to appeal to many varied tastes. One of the best attributes of the restaurant is the portions are pretty adequate. Would return infrequently."

  • "The room is inviting, food wonderful and the service outstanding. Our recent experience here was a wonderful surprise and I will be back with family or colleagues. This is worth the trip, but pricey."

  • "A friend wanted to do her birthday dinner. I just dropped a note in opentable about serving the desert with a candle since it was a birthday. The staff from the bar tender, our server to the manager just over delivered on every aspect of the dining experience. The food was delicious too, one of the best steaks I have had in SF."

  • "It is pricey but I will go back again and again. The service was amazing and the steak was one of the best I've ever had. Normally I find it hard to get a good steak and good apps/sides... This had the best of both. Definitely recommend the dry-aged steaks!"

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday here and from the moment we walked in the staff made us feel very special. And of course the food was amazing too."

  • "I didn't expect to get an amuse bouche in a steakhouse and it was delicious. I had the red wagyu with 12 different salts and my husband tried an Omaha steak that he's always read about. We were both very happy with our meals. Since I can't have dairy and all the desserts except for the sorbets have dairy, they gave us the complementary coconut dessert, salted chocolates, candy cotton and extra chocolates to take home with our left over mushrooms and green beans. Plus a chocolate dessert for my husband for his birthday. I made an omelet for breakfast with the mushrooms and green beans. Our waiter was very attentive as was every server that walked by if we had a question. We will definitely go back."

  • "this was our second year here for our after V-day dinner. We avoid the v-day smash and always dine the next day. This place will be a tradition for us. The wait staff is helpful , attentative and make great reccomendations. The food is amazing."

  • "Three of us ate at the restaurant that night. Two of the steaks were grilled wonderfully. I ordered rare and received well done. The wait staff was terrific and tried to correct as well as possible, but my friends were already eating and the ambience of the special evening was already gone with the loss of rhythm of the evening. VERY disappointing from the kitchen, but the wait staff truly is fantastic."

  • "We celebrated my husband's birthday here, a total group of 10. We were taken excellent care of, great service. We were seated upstairs in our own section of the restaurant, which was nice since we were so many people, which allowed everyone to talk, laugh and sing without necessarily disturbing other guests. The food (filet) was good, the scallops were amazing! It was a bit pricey, and if you're just going out for regular steaks I'd say you could probably choose a less expensive restaurant and still be happy with you meal. But if you like different types and styles of meat, you should try this place out."

  • "My general tendency when I go to Alexander's is to just ask whatever the best/most-unique steak is that they have at the moment. Each and every time, I could swear that was the best steak I've had in my life. There isn't a better steakhouse, anywhere, for any price. 11/10"
    Dined on 1/31/2014
  • "The food was way overpriced; it was not well prepared; the carrots were like cardboard; the service was awful (other than the wonderful man that served the bread); and the only thing that stood out as acceptable was the glass of cabernet. I enjoyed The Sea in the South Bay (an Alexander-related restaurant), but I will not be coming back here."

  • "This restaurant is beautiful, the service is top-notch and the food is delicious. I went with a friend and we shared the Tomahawk Steak for two. It was huge, really tasty and cooked perfectly. I recommend the truffle fries, but the mac and cheese was not up to par with the rest of the meal. Very impressed by this restaurant."

  • "The service at Alexander's was outstanding. Our waiter and other staff were attentive to every detail without being overbearing. Food is pricey but worth every penny. A prime example of how choosing smaller portions that are top quality and deeply satisfying trump larger portions that are just bulk."

  • "I'm new to the city and wanted to take my g/f somewhere nice to celebrate her birthday. I was recommended this place and it was wonderful. The service was a delight and the food was nice. They also served up a 'Happy Birthday' plate with mini-cake and candle which was a nice touch."
    Dined on 1/22/2014
  • "The service staff is excellent and gives royal treatment. The steaks are pricier than comparable steakhouses (e.g. Ruth's Chris or Morton's) yet not quite on par. However, they give many small, little freebie "treats" between courses which is quite nice. I recommend this place for special occasions."

  • "My husband had received a gift certificate for Alexander's, and after battling Friday night traffic, we were 10 minutes late - no problem, our table was still ready, even though they were packed. The food was innovative and delicious. We split the Little Gems salad with the maple bacon. He had the prime rib, and I had the black cod. Again, they were great, especially the cod,.Be forewarned, the prime rib is served with a trio of horseradish only. Good we had ordered the brussels sprouts-very flavorful. Then, sublime chocolate souffle. Our server made me remember how a great waiter can transform a good dinner into a great one. We'll be back ."

  • "Went here to celebrate my birthday with my husband. We love steak and this was the perfect place! They modified the menu to our taste and also created dishes for my husband and I to share vs. ordering our own meal each. Service was outstanding and the food was amazing! We were so stuffed when we left but we couldn't leave a bite left because it was so delicious!"

  • "My fiance and I came here to celebrate our 8th year anniversary and we couldn't have asked for a better restaurant than Alexander's. Our waiters gave us excellent service and the Tomahawk ribeye steak dinner for 2 was by far one of the most delicious and juiciest steak I ever tasted. I highly recommend this dish if you've never been to Alexander's before. Add on a couple side orders of mac n'cheese and wild mushrooms and you are good to go. We would definitely be visiting Alexander's again for other special occasions in the near future."

  • "The service was superb, but this restaurant is far more expensive than any steakhouse I've experienced. If you are a foodie (I am not) then you would like the bizarre, over-the-top combination of ingredients, since every dish is completely different than you would expect. For example, the butternut squash soup had beef in it. Really? Also, I asked for my steak medium, and it came medium rare--emphasis on rare. When chef's insist that they know better than you how your food should be cooked, I don't return. If I order the food and pay for the food, I better be guaranteed to get what I ordered. If my order offends him, then he has lost perspective."

  • "Steaks were excellent of course.I ordered the one of the Kobe steaks - very expensive but to-die-for. My mom ordered the prime rib - definitely worth it, it was huge! The crab appetizer was just ok a little bland, the salads were also a bit boring. The mackerel appetizer though was awesome. You MUST get the truffle french fries! mashed potatoes pretty good too. mac and cheese could use a litle more kick. The drinks were aweome! and they give you the cutest "pre-dessert" of cotton candy. I would go there again but only for a special occassion - very pricey, excellent service and food."

  • "Went for an anniversary dinner and let me say this...WOW. The staff was out of this world (handwritten card, champagne, etc.). The food...incredible!! Had the Perfect Porterhouse - AMAZING and a few of the 3oz Wagyu - BUTTER! Highly recommend this place and you will love it. Get ready to drop some coin. I brought a bottle of wine - $35 corkage fee. OVERALL - WHAT A SPOT!"
