Diner Reviews
  • "This is like going to Disney Land. If that's your kind of thing, or if you like the idea of sitting under giant flowers, cupids poised over your heads, and everything in pink, then by all means try this restaurant. The steak and potatoes were good steakhouse fare. The "Eyetalian" dressing was coffeeshop style. Food definitely does not reflect the pricing. Be prepared to spend a lot of dough if this sounds like your kind of fun."

  • "Anyone traveling in the central coast of California should take the opportunity to dine here. It is truly a landmark . The atmosphere is fun and unique, back to the past. The steaks were excellent and in our opinion give Ruth Chris a run for their money."

  • "Food was absolutely amazing, my husband said it was the best filet mignon he has ever had!"

  • "We took our parents for a 45th anniversary and both the grandchildren and the grandparents where so impressed with the ambiance, then the orchestra started playing and the kids took the grandparents out to dance, it was so cute. The food was excellent and the service was impeccable. It was a wonderful experience: )"

  • "I went to the Madonna Inn's Gold Rush Steakhouse as part of an anniversary experience staying at the hotel. I have to say, both the hotel and restaurant exceeded our wildest expectations! Seating was lightening fast, we had a lovely table, our waitress was very friendly and attentive, and the food was delicious. The abalone appetizer was a definite standout, and my French Filet and husband's sirloin were both delicious and perfectly prepared. I like my steak rare and I can't tell you how often a restaurant will take that to mean medium rare. This was PERFECT! To top it off, the lovely piece of German Chocolate cake they gave us complementary was just perfection! Thank you for making this a special day for the two of us!"

  • "The restaurant had a fantastic ambiance and the devotee was over the top, but everything here was! Ashley, our server was wonderful. Friendly, knowledgable and fast. We ordered the filet mignon! It was delicious!!! They had cakes and less, but w opted for icecream. We had a wonderful time!!"

  • "We were married in 1960, so it's probably appropriate to celebrate our wedding anniversary in an atmosphere that reminds us of the sixties. The only thing missing is the Rat Pack! The service is attentive, and they always get the recognition of a special event right. Prices are high, but worth it. Portions are large and excellent."

  • "Very pleasant but to expensive to attend on a regular basis"

  • "The Filet Mignon was the best steak I've had in many years. Cooked to perfection. The atmosphere and decor of the restaurant is something out of a dream. Will definitely come back next time I'm in California!"

  • "The Gold Rush Steakhouse is phenomenal for the quality of their food and the high level of service. I've lived in this area for 35 years and still consider it "the place" to go for a special occasion meal. While the steaks are my favorite, this restaurant doesn't have the old west appeal that other local steakhouses have but it is so unique and special unto itself that this doesn't matter. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone."

  • "This steakhouse is always a pleaser. We've been several times within my 30+ year lifetime. This time we came for my mom's (semi-surprise) birthday. We were a large party (10 ppl) and we had 4 kids, so I presume this is why they put us in the back. The ambiance was still lovely and the food was delicious. The service was bad because our waiter was busy with another large(r) party. Took him 2 reminders and 30 minutes to take our order -- and this came without an apology. The rest of the evening was spotty with un-stellar service and a few bizarre though laughable issues. Thankfully the manager interceded and made things right with his kind attention. A major mishap with the bill at the end was catastrophic. Maybe we'll try again next year."

  • "Server, Sharon terrific but was disappointed that the manager, Michael, would NOT allow me to order the Prime Rib portion from the child's menu, as I was able to do in three "upscale" restaurants the previous evenings in both Monterey and Carmel, Ca! Therefore I split a meal with my husband and everyone lost, the restaurants would have had the extra meal charge and I had my desired portion and choice. Therefore will not return in near future!"

  • "I don't eat steak very often, so I try for the best when I do. The filet mignon at The Madonna Inn was the best I've ever eaten! Tender, tasty and wondrous! And the service was excellent. The waiter was friendly, helpful and courteous, and fun! The Madonna Inn is a hoot, the ambiance over the top and you must accept it for what it for that. We did!"

  • "The service was very good. and so was the food. However, we ordered our steaks to be medium and they were well done, (no pink inside). I was with my young daughter who was so thrilled at the time and I didn't want to ruin her impression of things so I didn't say anything about it. We also ordered the Abalone appetizer which was partially chewy. I was expecting something pounded out and completely tender. The portion was very small too."

  • "I used to frequent the Madonna Inn in the mid-late 60's. I was pleased to see that there have been few changes. Women still frequent the men's restroom and the food, if anything, is better that it used to be. The filet was wonderful. I missed Phyllis Madonna singing "I left my heart in San Francisco" but I expect she, as all of us, is getting a bit older. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants a great meal with surroundings that can hardly be described."

  • "Our first time eating here, it was a treat from beginning to end. Food was perfectly prepared. My wife had prime rib (med-rare) and I had the lamb chops (medium) both were cooked as we had requested. Sides of baked potato and veggies (al-dente) were perfect additions. Service was excellent and slow paced so that we could enjoy each course. Salad was fresh and nicely dressed. Wine choices by the glass (quartino) were plentiful with many choices. Atmosphere was funky and whimsical (translate: gaudy) and fun, with dinner music provided after 7:00. A bit expensive but worth it. Wait staff was attentive along with a visit from the matre'd."

  • "We went for our sons graduation from Cal Poly. Waitress was super nice and gave us right amount of time to have our drinks. My New York steak was delicious and very flavorful. Best at our table, but prime rib was also good as well as filet minion. For my son, they brought him a piece of their cake on the house and brought out balloon that said congratulations!!! Also there was a live band playing which gave us a fun atmosphere. Price was reasonable for what you received. Overall was very happy with food and dining experience."

  • "A must see if you are in the area. Over the top décor, fun old school dancing. And you must take a look at the men's bathroom...."

  • "This place was very interesting. First of all the food was good. Everything was prepared as we had asked for it. The wait staff was attentive and knowledgeable. The décor has to be see to be believed. It's over the top and I'm guessing that is exactly what they were going for. It was a fun place and I would recommend it at least once. There was a band the night we were there so it was a little noisy. Oh you need to check out the men's room."

  • "Loved the embiance! We were joining Modonna for our anniversary dinner. I felt amazing bringing her through the large wood carved doors. Signing in to our reservation had us wait and additional 10-15 min which was perfectly fine got to enjoy some great things like take pictures next to the fire place and urinate into a waterfall. We sat buy a lovely matre d, given water and pickled peppers warm cheese and green onion? Our server may have been new but did not meet our expectations that the prosona of the elegant Madonna had presented. Similar to a nice Denny's server. Don't get me wrong nice but not quite Madonna material. Steak was cooked perfectly bit chewey for a filet mignon, sent with a side of poorly sautéed mushrooms. Dessert was good"

  • "The Madonna Inn is one of a kind. While the menu is classic steakhouse, the decor verges on psychedelic with multicolored water goblets, oodles of pink and gold upholstery and seasonal decorations that included a ceiling decked with blossoms and butterflies as big as our table. The preparation of our steaks were spot on and the quality of the meat and produce were exemplary. There are some rough edges to the experience, but it is an experience!"

  • "Having worked in the industry for 25 years, both front and back of the house. I have a different perspective than most. Love the decor, I get it, If you are going to do over the top go all the way. The food was standard nothing amazing or special, Although I did like the Fig and goat cheese crustini. service was OK I saw they were running six to seven table sections which really doesn't allow for the best service. The young lady handling busing was not pre busing or filling waters and looked like she was the only one on the floor. over all it was good but not to the reputation this establishment carries."

  • "The hot pink booths and huge flowers are really zany and fun. We had good service and couples all around us were celebrating anniversaries (we knew this because Madonna ties a celebratory balloon onto table). I was disappointed in food, as it is very pricey. My daughter and I split fried chicken to offset cost and it was just ok. Frozen green beans and what appeared to be packaged rolls. Not befitting the high prices. My husband really enjoyed his steak. We had a slice of chocolate cake and a slice of champagne cake for dessert and they were fine, but definitely looked better than they tasted. It was a fun experience but they really should decrease their prices or increase quality of cuisine."

  • "Why can't we get steaks like these in England? In short, my wife's choice (prime rib) and mine (filet mignon) were the best two pieces of meat we've ever tasted. Though she couldn't finish hers that evening, our splendid waiter, Abel, boxed it up for us and it tasted just as good the following morning. We also had coffee and cake before departing, which were also superb."

  • "This place is amazing to see. The decor is absolutely divine. Pure American kitsch. Unfortunately the amazement stops there. Cold rolls, tasteless steak, lackluster sides and rubbery lobster. Go for dessert only maybe, you might have more luck. "

  • "The pink and gold dining room is amazing, especially if you can see the dancers next door. We had a lovely waitress and the steaks were great. The wine was average though and it's quite expensive. We shared our steaks which was more than enough with a couple of appetizers. "

  • "My girlfriend had the New York steak and I had the Filet Mignon. Both were excellent pieces of meat, and were cooked just the way we asked. The server and her assistant were both fantastic, and checked in with us often to make sure things were going right. Overall, a most excellent dining experience."

  • "This is not our first time and will definitely not be our last visit. The filet mignon is so tender! Had the cake with english toffee/caramel, WOW! Even though the cuisine is not refined or as tasty as french cuisine, the quality and freshness of food are definitely the best. The service is excellent and you can tell they want you to be satisfied. Just the scenery of the place is an absolute MUST SEE. "

  • "I celebrated my birthday at at The Gold Rush wanting something extra special. The place is from another era! It has remained unchanged since I first ate there 40 years ago. The food was amazing and the service friendly and efficient. Love the desserts and the live big band music really added to the night. They even have a dance floor and we made a full night of it. I love this place!"

  • "There is immediate relaxation when you go to Madonna Inn for early supper -- we went at 5:30. All those cushy soft booths muffle the sound making the Inn one of the places we take my 97 year old Dad. He can hear the table conversation there and dd not have to fight with loud music. I don't know how it gets later, but is great for dinner before 6."

  • "We hadn't visited Madonna's in many years, and had forgotten the unbelievable decor. It's like art deco on steroids, but it's unique and over-the-top-fun. Food was good, but not memorable. Everything well-prepared and served, but nothing out of the ordinary. Quite pricey. Favorite for me is the men's rest room."
    Dined on 5/16/2014
  • "Loved the fact we got a small relish tray, choice of soup or salad, and tasty food! The portions were very large, as I'm older now, it would be nice if they had a small plate option for seniors. Great steaks, and sinful cake choices for dessert! The service was exceptional. I love the booths and the outrageous décor! It's a bit on the pricey side for everyday dining, but very fun for a special occasion! It's one of a kind...."
