The cuisine is outstanding. We had
the most tender octopus salad ever, followed by gnocchi that nearly levitated off the plate served with spring vegetables. It was as elegant as it was tasty. Portions are on the smallish side and prices are justifiably higher than most. The wine list is ambitious. It has become our favorite place for special events and celebrations."

Went to Alex's with local friends.
A little empty for a Thurs night, restaurant deserved better. I had Parpdelle and my wife the duck. Both were excellent. Everything was great, very good and friendly service. Will return."

Those were the words of our son
who worked w Alex's Chef Todd at Auberge. If you are looking for alluring flavors on plated works of culinary art you better go now before the world figures out about Alex. Red/yellow beet salad, citrus, arugula, goat cheese to start. Yum! Then chestnut pappardelle pasta w/tomato, burrata, & pesto. OMG!!! I had to stop myself from eating all of this fabulous pasta; brought it home! Next onion crusted salmon w/hearty vegis/faro. Brought that home too so I could have the unbelievable..shortbread cookie topped w/chocolate/caramelized bananas. Ate the whole thing! My husband loved his butter lettuce salad, gnocchi, beef tenderloin & Gelato. Thank you to very accomplished Chef Todd! We will definitely be back!"

Alex is a restaurant that deserves
more attention. It's just "off the main road" (Rt. 29) so many people may not even know it's there. But it's well worth the slight jog East on the Rutherford Cross Road. We had excellent starters - asparagus soup that was very fresh tasting and a delightful burata and carrot salad. That was followed by the most delightful chestnut pasta dish. My salmon and my husband's steak were both done exactly as we asked for them. We also enjoyed a lovely Barbaresco with our meal that we felt was fairly priced. All in all we enjoyed a lovely evening and will be going back soon."

We had a great time at the
restaurant. Good food, good friends. Can't wait to come back!"

We dined on a Sunday evening. The
restaurant had a quiet atmosphere and elegant decor. Though we brought our own wine, there was a long and interesting wine list. Lots of wines from Europe. The food was excellent. I had the squid ink pasta with dungeness crab and shrimp. Absolutely one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten. My husband had the beef tenderloin. He said the meat was very tender and tasty. The only con about the dinner was the portion size. Very small plates of food made us glad we started with a salad. I would recommend it as a great special occasion restaurant. The prices are a bit steep, though, for the portion size."

We stayed at the Rancho Caymus
which is connected to this restaurant. We weren't particularly hungry but it had been recommended and it was our last night so we chose to share a few dishes. It's a small place but it wasn't crowded while we were there. The food was wonderful, as was the service. I can imagine though that on a busy weekend night that this place would get very crowded, so I would recommend trying it early or on a night when it most likely wouldn't get too busy."

this is a pretty location in a
beautiful place that has unrealistic ideas about dining. Stike one, wine only. Strike two, to dark to read menu. Strike three, have to order every course or go home and have a snack. Tiny tiny tiny portions. Beet salad had two whole slices of beet. Baby vegetables with entree were so few and so tiny as to not even be worth messing with. Dessert was a teeny tiny cookie with a banana slice on top or a couple small pieces of chocolate and a teaspoon of gelato. Not even a bite or enough to fill a spoon. Would not go back, ever! The service was good, we were the only ones in there. Very expensive, So if you want to spend 250.00 for about five bites of food this is your place."

It must have been an off day for
the place. My main dish was a little on the salty side. My fiance enjoyed her halibut thou."

Two of us dined at Alex based on
Open Table and Trip Advisor reviews. Mid week in early February is a favorite time for us to visit wine country and Alex was quiet serving only 6 tables or so during the dinner hour. Food quality is where the dining experience took a nose dive. A pasta dish with tagliatelle was under cooked, tuff and doughy. A braised rabbit and polenta dish featured dry and stringy rabbit lacking flavor and chunky, flavorless polenta. We suspect the rabbit and polenta were not prepared the day we dined and was left over from a previous day. Dessert was a rock hard crusted canoli that had seen too much time in the fridge. A $200 dinner should feature better than left over quality thus we will not return.. ."

I have lived in Napa Valley for
years and have frequented many of the top restaurants. My first visit to Alex restaurant was eye opening! This establishment outmatched them all for outstanding quality of food, presentation, price to value, attentive staff, attention to detail in service, pacing of service and for the finely appointed environment. I also want to make a special mention of the wine list. It is generous in size, well selected, diverse and even the most modestly priced bottles are real gems. Many thanks to Alex as well for the help and knowledge with our selection. I am looking forward to my next visit!"

We always enjoy Alex, but the new
chef has taken the menu in a great direction! We had four courses (carpaccio, crab salad, pasta, and a meat dish) and all were fantastic! Alex's hospitality makes every meal a great experience. Service was on point as usual."

Alex is off the beaten track, and
thank goodness! Most diners are locals, who know about great food and wine. Alex is the ultimate host, with a sommelier's knowledge of wine. The food is consistently delicious. The duck lasagna special was rub-on-your-body fantastic. The rabbit in a sauce that included chocolate (!) was wonderful. Although I'd prefer to keep Alex a secret, I want them to stay in business, so I can keep having their delicious, authentic Italian food. Go there and enjoy!"

While I feel it is disingenuine to
"review" a restaurant on a single visit and without a writer's culinary credentials, this is the format that OpenTable seems to think is appropriate. I look for precision cooking that is inspired with fresh thought. Desserts excepted, we didn't find this at Alex's."

Alex has a new chef as of late
December and she is hitting it out of the park. If you have been in the past and have been disappointed you must give this place another try. We have been twice already and will return again soon."

I would like to go back for Alex's
charm and solicitousness, graceful service, and beautiful room, but the food did not do the service justice, and did not deliver value for the prices. It's too bad, because the menu was so tempting, but all the dishes were bland and were brought down by under seasoning and poor execution. Tagliatelle with Pork Ragout was very dry and undersauced, like someone scraped up the last bits out of the pot. Gnocchi were light and pillowy but bland and plain, with nothing to make the dish sing. Duck at $35, again no salt, a little heavy on blood orange, and a very bland over-fried arancino.. Cod had burnt potatoes flipped over to hide that, but had infused everything with an acrid taste. Can't hide that."

Our experience at Atex's was very
memorable. Alex and his staff are very friendly, knowledgeable and courteous. The wine selection was outstanding. The food was very tasty and plentiful. Will return again on our next trip to the area."

Overall the food was good not
excellent, Alex the owner was very nice and knowledgeable about wine but the service was painfully slow and we were not followed up with for drinks. I thought something might be wrong when it was the only resturant with availability on a busy sat night in Napa but I read the reviews and it seemed like most people had enjoyed it. I would not go back or recommend the resturant"

Napa Valley. Old world charm coupled with attentive staff and wonderful dishes."

We dined at Alex for my birthday.
It was wonderful! So warm and cozy and the most welcoming greeting by Alex himself! The food was wonderful - three of us had the gnocchi with meat sauce, one a mixed seafood dish. All were fresh and delicious. We enjoyed the poached pear for dessert, and because they had run out of the two desserts the rest were hoping for, the chef prepared a special chocolate mousse sampler! Wonderful! We'll be back!"

Wonderful dinner and romantic
evening. The wine list is AMAZING!! Highly recommend you take the time to get to know the owner. Great personality, very attentive, recommended an excellent wine, and a true Italian!! Thank you!!! Our Christmas Eve dinner was very memorable."

Overpriced relative to other
restaurants in the area--for the same amount of money, you can eat at a Michelin starred restaurant (Redd, Bouchon, Auberge). Service was underwhelming."
Dined on 12/24/2013
The food that I received was very
salty. When I commented that the food was salty, the owner of restaurant became very defensive and upset. I believe he took it personally. I had a feeling that I was no longer welcomed at the restaurant. I was very disappointed with my experience here."
Dined on 12/10/2013
No one really knows about this
great restaurant. We've had excellent meals here each time - service can be hit or miss, but never "bad." They really should market themselves more. The wine list is incredible and the food outstanding and reasonably priced. Atmosphere is beautiful. One should not miss trying this restaurant - you won't be disappointed. We're fortunate to live in the area, with weekly reservations in Yountville, St. Helena, etc. - so to have found this little hidden gem was quite exciting."
Dined on 11/22/2013
This was third time here. Noticed
number of diners way down. Cream of mushroom soup was thin, with a quail thigh (?why)...Beet risotto (why beets?)was just red and overpwered by beet flavor. Rib eye was cooked perfectly but COLD (other two steaks at table were medium, think they took my medium rare off the fire while they waited for the others to cook). We will NOT dine there again."

If you are open minded to trying
authentic Italian food, you will not be disappointed. There are some unusual ingredients and preparations, but everything is prepared with such skill. We have been there twice - in Oct 2012 and Oct 2013 and both times it was spectacular. I have to agree with others in that Alex himself is great - very personable and down to earth. When my husband complimented him on the main dish, he was so pleased - it was sweet. It is very romantic and has quite an upscale feel, but the servers and Alex make you feel very comfortable and welcome. I imagine wedding proposals taking place there. Give it a try."

My friend and I were excited to
try Alex's after reading several reviews and looking at the menu online. The staff was very attentive and the owner greated us by name and did most of the serving. That was the highlight of the meal however. We had an italian meat and cheese plater as an appetizer that was very good. Main dishes of Tagliatelle and Ravioli were both very bland and the Tagliatelle was overcooked. On the plus side the wine list was extensive and very good...I suppose if we had drank more the poor quality of the food would not have been as noticeable."

Have been wanting to visit Alex
for some time now since La Toque moved. The space is still warm and comfortable, simple and welcoming. Our service was fabulous from start to finish. We were a large group so had the pleasure of ordering most every dish on the menu and each was worthy of a "foodie shot". That said, though everything was well presented and the pasta perfectly executed (as would be expected) we left somewhat underwhelmed in the land of flawless food. It dawned on us that everything was simply under seasoned. Fresh herbs and the power of salt can elevate a so-so dish into fabulous. We enjoyed our meal but in one of America's most competitive dining destinations it fell short."

This is our favorite restaurant
for a romantic dinner in the Napa Valley area. Alex's is very cozy with fireplace seating indoor or on the patio, and boasts creative Italian dishes to savor through the evening. The wine list is extensive with reasonable pricing. The service is outstanding!"

an hour long wait at Rutherford's
made me move next door to Alex...we were only one of 3 tables in there and it was library quiet. Service was unexceptional, prices were outrageous for small portions, none of the dishes were outstanding."

After being overwhelmed by their
wine Bible--just ask Alex (the owner) what to have. He's amazing! And the food----yum!!!!"
