Alex Italian Restaurant owned and operated by sommelier Alessia and Alessandro Sbrendola offers first class, Italian cuisine and service in an intimate sophisticated settings. Opened in 2011 and located in Rutherford in the heart of the Napa Valley, the restaurant features Chef Reed Hearon creative and contemporary cuisine. Alex Italian Restaurant received the Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator 2012. Alex Italian restaurant which take its name for the Americanized versions of the owners names, feature a top notch wine list that in its over 100 pages includes extraordinary wine makers from both old and new world.

  • "Alex in Rutherford is a friendly, special local restaurant with outstanding mostly Italian food. Service is excellent, fine full wine list, and satisfying in all ways. We ate the Chicken prepared under a brick, crispy on the outside and tender and juicy in the middle. Salmon in grape leaves was delicious. Our first courses were perfect. This restaurant deserves attention, lucky to have it in my neighborhood. It has a pleasant ambiance and Alex, the owner, could not be more attentive and caring."

The food is impeccably prepared with a focus on freshness and locally sourcing. At Auberge there is a sweeping view of the Napa Valley, at Meadowood there is the golf course. My only complaint was the setting. I did ask for the patio but it was unavailable until 5 mins after we were seated."

  • "This was our best dining experience while in Napa. Went on a quiet Wednesday and were impressed the moment we entered. Atmosphere is comfortably refined. Our server, Will, provided flawless, perfectly paced service and two wine choices that couldn't have been better. The menu is not deep with choices but I view that as a positive sign. Duck Pansotti was wonderful. Pork Cheeks with truffle puree equally so. Squid ink pasta with Dungeness crab and shrimp is highly recommended. We would be regulars here if it weren't the 2000 miles that separates us. Highly recommend."

  • "Very nice decor. Clean colors, wine country theme. Nice outdoor seating. The menue is not large, but a good selection. Every thing was very well prepared and the ingredients were top rate. The squid ink pasta was over the top great. Texture of the pasta was perfect, along with the crab and shrimp a dish I will remember. Duck and pork cheeks were a delight. "

  • "This restaurant is finally hitting its stride. The octopus was done perfectly; crispy yet still tender. The burata salad is consistently good. The pastas are fresh and correctly prepared. Chestnut pasta is our current favorite. The tenderloin is one of the best steaks in the area. Petrale sole was substituted for halibut on our last visit and it was excellent. Ricotta cheese cake with whipped cream and berries was a great ending to a delicious meal. "

  • "We had a very nice lunch here after touring some local wineries. We shared several dishes. The staff was very accommodating in this busy restaurant. The home made pasta was delicious ! We shared a duck ragu and also a pork schnitzel. Our friends also shared the pasta and a steak dish. Both were perfectly prepared."

  • "We checked out this resturant as we were staying at the Inn next door. It was a wonderful find! I had the beef for my entree and started with the Potato Gnonish. Both were excellent and the kitchen even made something special for my teenage daughter who was a bit overwhelm by the foodie culture of Napa. The really worked hard to take good care of us! The large roaring fireplace was beautiful on a cool rainy evening"

  • "The cuisine is outstanding. We had the most tender octopus salad ever, followed by gnocchi that nearly levitated off the plate served with spring vegetables. It was as elegant as it was tasty. Portions are on the smallish side and prices are justifiably higher than most. The wine list is ambitious. It has become our favorite place for special events and celebrations."

If you are looking for alluring flavors on plated works of culinary art you better go now before the world figures out about Alex. Red/yellow beet salad, citrus, arugula, goat cheese to start. Yum! Then chestnut pappardelle pasta w/tomato, burrata, & pesto. OMG!!! I had to stop myself from eating all of this fabulous pasta; brought it home! Next onion crusted salmon w/hearty vegis/faro. Brought that home too so I could have the unbelievable..shortbread cookie topped w/chocolate/caramelized bananas. Ate the whole thing! My husband loved his butter lettuce salad, gnocchi, beef tenderloin & Gelato. Thank you to very accomplished Chef Todd! We will definitely be back!"

  • "Alex is a restaurant that deserves more attention. It's just "off the main road" (Rt. 29) so many people may not even know it's there. But it's well worth the slight jog East on the Rutherford Cross Road. We had excellent starters - asparagus soup that was very fresh tasting and a delightful burata and carrot salad. That was followed by the most delightful chestnut pasta dish. My salmon and my husband's steak were both done exactly as we asked for them. We also enjoyed a lovely Barbaresco with our meal that we felt was fairly priced. All in all we enjoyed a lovely evening and will be going back soon."

  • "We dined on a Sunday evening. The restaurant had a quiet atmosphere and elegant decor. Though we brought our own wine, there was a long and interesting wine list. Lots of wines from Europe. The food was excellent. I had the squid ink pasta with dungeness crab and shrimp. Absolutely one of the best pasta dishes I have ever eaten. My husband had the beef tenderloin. He said the meat was very tender and tasty. The only con about the dinner was the portion size. Very small plates of food made us glad we started with a salad. I would recommend it as a great special occasion restaurant. The prices are a bit steep, though, for the portion size."

  • "We stayed at the Rancho Caymus which is connected to this restaurant. We weren't particularly hungry but it had been recommended and it was our last night so we chose to share a few dishes. It's a small place but it wasn't crowded while we were there. The food was wonderful, as was the service. I can imagine though that on a busy weekend night that this place would get very crowded, so I would recommend trying it early or on a night when it most likely wouldn't get too busy."

  • "this is a pretty location in a beautiful place that has unrealistic ideas about dining. Stike one, wine only. Strike two, to dark to read menu. Strike three, have to order every course or go home and have a snack. Tiny tiny tiny portions. Beet salad had two whole slices of beet. Baby vegetables with entree were so few and so tiny as to not even be worth messing with. Dessert was a teeny tiny cookie with a banana slice on top or a couple small pieces of chocolate and a teaspoon of gelato. Not even a bite or enough to fill a spoon. Would not go back, ever! The service was good, we were the only ones in there. Very expensive, So if you want to spend 250.00 for about five bites of food this is your place."

  • "Two of us dined at Alex based on Open Table and Trip Advisor reviews. Mid week in early February is a favorite time for us to visit wine country and Alex was quiet serving only 6 tables or so during the dinner hour. Food quality is where the dining experience took a nose dive. A pasta dish with tagliatelle was under cooked, tuff and doughy. A braised rabbit and polenta dish featured dry and stringy rabbit lacking flavor and chunky, flavorless polenta. We suspect the rabbit and polenta were not prepared the day we dined and was left over from a previous day. Dessert was a rock hard crusted canoli that had seen too much time in the fridge. A $200 dinner should feature better than left over quality thus we will not return.. ."

  • "I have lived in Napa Valley for years and have frequented many of the top restaurants. My first visit to Alex restaurant was eye opening! This establishment outmatched them all for outstanding quality of food, presentation, price to value, attentive staff, attention to detail in service, pacing of service and for the finely appointed environment. I also want to make a special mention of the wine list. It is generous in size, well selected, diverse and even the most modestly priced bottles are real gems. Many thanks to Alex as well for the help and knowledge with our selection. I am looking forward to my next visit!"

  • "Alex is off the beaten track, and thank goodness! Most diners are locals, who know about great food and wine. Alex is the ultimate host, with a sommelier's knowledge of wine. The food is consistently delicious. The duck lasagna special was rub-on-your-body fantastic. The rabbit in a sauce that included chocolate (!) was wonderful. Although I'd prefer to keep Alex a secret, I want them to stay in business, so I can keep having their delicious, authentic Italian food. Go there and enjoy!"

I look for precision cooking that is inspired with fresh thought. Desserts excepted, we didn't find this at Alex's."

  • "I would like to go back for Alex's charm and solicitousness, graceful service, and beautiful room, but the food did not do the service justice, and did not deliver value for the prices. It's too bad, because the menu was so tempting, but all the dishes were bland and were brought down by under seasoning and poor execution. Tagliatelle with Pork Ragout was very dry and undersauced, like someone scraped up the last bits out of the pot. Gnocchi were light and pillowy but bland and plain, with nothing to make the dish sing. Duck at $35, again no salt, a little heavy on blood orange, and a very bland over-fried arancino.. Cod had burnt potatoes flipped over to hide that, but had infused everything with an acrid taste. Can't hide that."
