A word from Alex H
Alex H was originally opened as “Gourmateque Restaurant” in 1982, located on St-Hubert street, it was already making headlines for it’s great food. Most notably the home made lasagna, still found on our menu on occasion. The man behind this was Alex himself.

Alex already had restaurant experience from some of Montreal’s greatest, such as, the Royal Embassy, Mother Martin, Grand Motor hotel, Elmridge country club, and the Ritz Carlton to name a few. Alex had decided he would want to offer the same fine dining experience at a more affordable rate.

Established in 1990, the original Alex H (on Monkland street) was family run for 10 years, until 2000, when it moved to Sherbrooke street where it is still found today.

Today a family trio runs the kitchen, Alex, his daughter Maria, and his son Edward. Every night they cook your meals with pride we hope you’ll take the chance to experience the pride and care that goes into making every dish at Alex H. Please BYO Liquor.

Diner Reviews
  • "I love this restaurant - you can always rely on the staff who are friendly and efficient and the food is consistently delicious. It's a lively atmosphere without being too noisy. Neighbourhood gem is definitely the right description, but you don't have to live in the area to enjoy this restaurant - it's worth a trip!"

  • "The food was not as good as it used to be and during all the meal, we had this lound and cheap "chikaboum' music in the ears. And no, the waitress was not able (or allowed?) to change the type of music. Not a memorable experience."

  • "Maybe it was because it was still using a Valentine menu, but I found the food choices to be lack-luster and boring. My duck was extremely thick salty (like the sauce may have been sitting too long) and the coquilles Valentine (with lobster), though passable, seemed to have been made with instant potatoes, I don't think they were instant (or at least I hop they weren't), but that was what the texture reminded me of. The service was pretty much non-existent. My waitress didn't even come over once during our meal, and I actively sought her out to complain about the duck. Too bad, it was pretty good the last time I visited, but this was a disaster!"

  • "I've been to the Alex H at least 3 times in the past year and have never been disappointed. The menu has something for everyone, the dishes are reasonably priced and consistently delicious. The service has always been attentive, unpretentious, friendly and first rate. The space, while not high end, has a comfortable ambience. This mostky unkown local restaurant offers great value and is a real gem that I would recommend to anyone."

  • "My friend and I wanted to dine before seeing a play. The server timed our meal within our restraint yet not rushed. Overall, parking was easy, the ambiance was cosy and elegant, it was easy to hear one another talk and our selections from the various interesting menu choices were delicious. What a find - we will definitely return!"

  • "When we placed our order, I asked for an appetizer and then my companion and I also were to have had (him) and salad (me) that came with our meal. I asked that he be served his soup while I had my appetizer and I would have my salad at the same time as my meal. Instead, I was served my appetizer alone. It was not yet busy at this point. Then several minutes after my plate was taken away, we were brought the soup and salad. After that, we got our meal and although tasty, wasn't as hot as it should be. In fact, it was barely warm. The creme brûlée wasn't good at all (didn't finish it) and the house cake was just average."

  • "Have been there many times over the last 2 years & it never disappoints. Food is always great, service friendly & efficient, very affordable because it is BYOB. Excellent example of a well run family business that the area enjoys supporting. It is our first choice for dinner out. Always try to bring new friends there so they can enjoy this great gem."

  • "BYO which is great. Very nice wait staff. Escargot in a rosée cream sauce with a little puff pastry, $6, really good. For $34, good carrot ginger soup served piping hot and an ostrich medallion which was really good, although on the small side. This definitely would not have been enough food for my husband. For $30, carrot soup and the cote de boeuf with sauce au poivre and blue cheese. It was really good as well. Unfortunately, the vegetables served were extremely bland steamed vegetables with a couple of spiced potatoes. Very boring. Even if we did enjoy the food somewhat, I probably wouldn't go back. On a Saturday night, I prefer to go out to a livelier place. There was no ambiance, no music, no decor and a 60 + crowd."

  • "It was a night out with Mom and my wife. The food was delicious - light and full of flavour. We had a fabulous time."

  • "Food was definitely good: chicken and duck dishes had great flavours. Service was uneven but friendly and charmant. Not sure why this resto would be classified as French and Italian - little or no Italian."

  • "We have been to Alex H many times and it is consistently good unpretentious food. We appreciate the BYOB part as we can enjoy a really good bottle of wine . We would recommend this restaurant for a cosy pleasant evening. The liver is outstanding and always cooked to perfection."

  • "AlexH has always been a very friendly neighbourhood restaurant that has served excellent food. Congratulations to the chef that has kept the quality of the restaurant up since its inception."

  • "Alex H is a charming restaurant with a good quality cuisine. Unfortunately, on my last outing there, the vegetables were lukewarm and the starter salad offering AWOL (as the lettuce delivery person didn't show up). It was very full and a bit noisy, but that it is to be expected in the run up to Christmas. I certainly will go back for the ambiance and the generally excellent food."

  • "Three of us, adults in our 60s, recently spent a pleasant Saturday evening at Alex H. The service was friendly and efficient, the food offering was varied and good and the restaurant ambiance allowed for normal conversation between old friends. Who could ask for more? Oh yes, I forgot to mention that you can also bring your own wine!"

  • "fantastic neighborhood ambiance... the mark of the chief's ingenuity is everywhere... my wife had a wonderful veal chop and i venison with "savage berries" er wild berries. Bringing your own wine keeps the prices sane and allows one to concentrate on the creativity of the food. Great desserts. Another reason to venture out of the usual dining spots in a wonderful culinary city..."

  • "We were a group of six, 4 adults and 2 teens, and everyone had a great time. The menu is limited but varied, and they are very flexible. I mostly eat vegetarian and some fish, so was happy that there were options for me. The food was great, and while it's not cheap, the $20 table d'hôte was very reasonable, and the Bring Your Own Wine aspect makes it really worth it. Definitely a great option in the NDG area!"

  • "Alex H is a cozy little neighborhood restaurant that has never disappointed. I've been many times and always found the French bistro food to be the excellent. The Magret de Canard is a particular favorite. On my last visit the service was a little slow, but not to the point of ruining the evening."
