A word from Alex H
Alex H was originally opened as “Gourmateque Restaurant” in 1982, located on St-Hubert street, it was already making headlines for it’s great food. Most notably the home made lasagna, still found on our menu on occasion. The man behind this was Alex himself.

Alex already had restaurant experience from some of Montreal’s greatest, such as, the Royal Embassy, Mother Martin, Grand Motor hotel, Elmridge country club, and the Ritz Carlton to name a few. Alex had decided he would want to offer the same fine dining experience at a more affordable rate.

Established in 1990, the original Alex H (on Monkland street) was family run for 10 years, until 2000, when it moved to Sherbrooke street where it is still found today.

Today a family trio runs the kitchen, Alex, his daughter Maria, and his son Edward. Every night they cook your meals with pride we hope you’ll take the chance to experience the pride and care that goes into making every dish at Alex H. Please BYO Liquor.

The way the restaurant was described, I thought it was more urban than it turned out to be. It's in a quiet, pretty neighborhood much like areas of Brooklyn, off the beaten path. It was BYOB, but that was righted quickly enough with a nearby convenience store, though the wine choices were pretty arbitrary. Gnocchi with a tomato cream sauce for my wife and daughter, followed by salmon with pistachios for the former and a bison steak with a wildberry sauce for the latter. Our server, a charming young lady, forgot our gazpacho, so we shared one bowl after the mains. I had a simple smoked salmon app...and a veal chop with wild mushrooms. Very reasonable spot. They even had a creme caramel for dessert for $3. Good if not great meal, great deal.

I thought the food was, overall, quite up to level we have come to expect at Alex H but an error in the kitchen took the edge off our meal particularly for one member of our party. Two of us ordered the rack of lamb and we were quite looking forward to it. Just before the main course was to be served, the waiter told us that due to an error in the kitchen, we were both going to get the veal chop instead. We could have the lamb if we insisted, but as we would have to wait we both accepted the veal. I could see that my friend was more disappointed especially as her veal was overdone. I enjoyed my meal, veal and all (and our deserts were gratis) but had the error not occurred, i would likely have given four-stars, not three.

We had a reservation at 6:15 and the place was still empty, so we had our pick of tables. The server informed us that there was only one serving left of one of the main dishes offered...then when one of our party opted for a different choice, we were told (after the appetizer) that this main dish was not available. So that seemed a bit odd- given that there was no advanced notice and we were the first seated (more customers had arrived by then). The meals and appetizers were all very good, but there is only one server, so things backed up quickly. In short, the food is worth the visit, but only if you have the time. Dinner for 6 including tax (5 appetizers and 6 mains) came to @210.

My wife and I went to Alex H for the first time last week. Although the menu is somewhat limited, both of us had more than sufficient choices. During our meal we were served by three waiters, all of whom were very helpful and friendly. While both of us had the salad, the rest of our selections were different. We were so pleased with our meal, that I have already decided to go to Alex H with three colleagues in early September.

The food is very good. The sauces and presentation especially is excellent. My only qualification is that on my last visit the bavette steak was, despite an excellent Gorgonzola sauce, exceedingly small. On the other hand, my wife had the duck and it was perfect in every way.

Robert Primeau

Maybe it was because it was still using a Valentine menu, but I found the food choices to be lack-luster and boring. My duck was extremely thick salty (like the sauce may have been sitting too long) and the coquilles Valentine (with lobster), though passable, seemed to have been made with instant potatoes, I don't think they were instant (or at least I hop they weren't), but that was what the texture reminded me of. The service was pretty much non-existent. My waitress didn't even come over once during our meal, and I actively sought her out to complain about the duck. Too bad, it was pretty good the last time I visited, but this was a disaster!

I've been to the Alex H at least 3 times in the past year and have never been disappointed. The menu has something for everyone, the dishes are reasonably priced and consistently delicious. The service has always been attentive, unpretentious, friendly and first rate. The space, while not high end, has a comfortable ambience. This mostky unkown local restaurant offers great value and is a real gem that I would recommend to anyone.

When we placed our order, I asked for an appetizer and then my companion and I also were to have had (him) and salad (me) that came with our meal. I asked that he be served his soup while I had my appetizer and I would have my salad at the same time as my meal. Instead, I was served my appetizer alone. It was not yet busy at this point. Then several minutes after my plate was taken away, we were brought the soup and salad. After that, we got our meal and although tasty, wasn't as hot as it should be. In fact, it was barely warm. The creme brûlée wasn't good at all (didn't finish it) and the house cake was just average.

BYO which is great. Very nice wait staff. Escargot in a rosée cream sauce with a little puff pastry, $6, really good. For $34, good carrot ginger soup served piping hot and an ostrich medallion which was really good, although on the small side. This definitely would not have been enough food for my husband. For $30, carrot soup and the cote de boeuf with sauce au poivre and blue cheese. It was really good as well. Unfortunately, the vegetables served were extremely bland steamed vegetables with a couple of spiced potatoes. Very boring. Even if we did enjoy the food somewhat, I probably wouldn't go back. On a Saturday night, I prefer to go out to a livelier place. There was no ambiance, no music, no decor and a 60 + crowd.

Alex H is a charming restaurant with a good quality cuisine. Unfortunately, on my last outing there, the vegetables were lukewarm and the starter salad offering AWOL (as the lettuce delivery person didn't show up). It was very full and a bit noisy, but that it is to be expected in the run up to Christmas. I certainly will go back for the ambiance and the generally excellent food.

We were a group of six, 4 adults and 2 teens, and everyone had a great time. The menu is limited but varied, and they are very flexible. I mostly eat vegetarian and some fish, so was happy that there were options for me. The food was great, and while it's not cheap, the $20 table d'hôte was very reasonable, and the Bring Your Own Wine aspect makes it really worth it. Definitely a great option in the NDG area!

I cannot give a review, as I found out minutes before leaving to go to the restaurant that they had booked the whole restaurant for a private party, and we wouldn't be able to come! And if I hadn't called to say that we would be 20 minutes late, we would have arrived to be turned away at the door! How humiliating! Who does this? We were celebrating someone's birthday, how would you feel having to tell that person that we now have no where to go? I was not notified either by e-mail, or my work phone number, the two contacts I had given. I hope their private party was worth it, as they now have lost at least 5 people who cannot trust to go there again.
