A word from Alder
The 56-seat neighborhood spot is a modern interpretation of a public house, offering casual food, well-crafted cocktails and an extensive selection of intriguing and affordable wines. In the spirit of every great pub, guests are welcomed to drop in for anything from a drink and a quick bite on the way home after work, to joining with friends or family in sharing a meal.

Chef Wylie Dufresne, along with Chef de Cuisine Ryan Henderson, apply innovative techniques in the kitchen at Alder, taking familiar dishes and flavor combinations and presenting them in their own unique style, celebrating New York City’s diverse food culture in the process. Dufresne and Henderson find their inspiration in their metropolitan surroundings: New York is a city where we can source the best ingredients from around the world and turn them into something distinctly American.

    Great menu selection and the portion size allows diners to try several very different dishes. Two of us shared six items. Really enjoyed the rabbit sausage and the crostini. Very attentive waitstaff. Small so book ahead. Acoustics are such that a full restaurant is very loud.

    I expected better. The food just was not up to WD standards. Our server gave an deliciously sounding description of the goat meatball special, but we were presented with 3 tiny bite-size morsels that could've been pieces cut from an Oscar Myer hotdog, except that they were just utterly bland. We had 8 plates to share for 2 people, and none of the plates were really great; they were all just "okay". If you are going to charge exceptional prices then I expect my taste buds to be wowed. They just weren't with any dish.

    10/24/14: Food was nothing like NYTs review. Menu has changed. All food was bland, not worth it, go somewhere else. We had the pub cheese, beets, onion soup rings, tilefish and rabbit sausage. Everything was well executed but no flavor, nothing special. So many other places to go. This should be taken off the NYTs scoop listing. It not up to WD50 standards.

    In typical Wylie Dufresne style, every dish is comprised of ingredients that you wouldn't expect to go together. I think the best thing I had that night was the frog leg wonton soup. That broth was everything. Also try the rye pasta with pastrami it tastes just like a sandwich...expect it's pasta! Wines were great, bartender was great. Worth every penny.

    We have been to Alder several times but all the dishes 4 of us ordered (I think we missed 3 on the menu) were really good. Found out later that Wylie Dufresne was cooking on Monday.

    We look forward to going back to Alder next time we are in the East Village! We loved the decor - upscale and calming, with wonderful use of stone and wood (even the menu was presented on a wooden plank!). We ordered six dishes. For us, the most memorable and delicious were the Lamb tartare, Hamachi, Shrimp on shrimp and Sweetbreads. The Cheese and pistachio appetizer was also great, as it is presented on a slate slab and we kept scraping up the cheese to not miss a bite. I'd highly recommend the Dr. Dave's Scrip Pad drink. The only issue we had was that the Rye pasta dish with pastrami was unbearably salty and not pleasant to eat. The Alder staff, however, graciously removed the item from our tab without our asking.

    We live nearby and have wanted to try for a while. I'm afraid we were just a bit let down by this experience. Everything was perfectly fine, reasonably tasty, just nothing exceptional. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly, a bit impatient and huffy, but she wasn't horrible. I don't mind paying $21 for a 3 ounce tapas dish on occasion if each bite thrills; this fell flat, and was therefore hugely overpriced in my opinion.

    We had an overall ok experience. The server recommended 2-3 plates per guest. We ordered 7 plates and were still quite hungry. The Lamb tartare was one of our favorite. The rye pasta was delicious as well. The head cheese and eggs and Madai dishes lacked salt, although they had really good flavor. The concepts of the dishes were very creative. The wine list was short and sweet, I enjoyed the bad vintage category. We found a great bottle! Unfortunately, we left without dessert so that we could go somewhere else to eat more. Our server hit the steps of service but was not noticeably personable.

    We were excited to try this restaurant -- we love sharing small plates and the menu looked inspired and creative... however, we found it pricey, portions were small and nothing "wowed" us. With so many great restaurants in the area, I don't see any reason to recommend this one.

    Outstanding food quality and originality. Everything tried was amazing Desert are so so (not bad but way below the rest of the menu) don't go for them prefer everything else. Also the menu is tapas size based so you can try a lot of different things and share :(

    Went with 2 friends to celebrate a special birthday. Service was lacking right from the start. Food was interesting, well presented, and tasty. Unfortunately, when it came time each of us to receive our own bill (small towns in Canada can do it but we are led to believe that the technology doesn't exist in NYC???), both the server and manager (?) were unaccommodating. This would have been bad enough but then their behavior turned to disrespectful and insulting. No customer should have to be made to feel like that. Especially after enjoying such a great meal! Unfortunately, my rating I based on how I felt when leaving the restaurant.

    My wife and I had extremely high hopes for our first dining experience at Alder and it met every expectation. We tried four different plates and not one of them elicited "That's pretty good, but..." Each was a unique dish that we had never tasted before. You have to try the "Pigs in a Blanket," you'll thank me later. The service was impeccable: attentive but unobtrusive and the staff's recommendations were a hit. I always try and have a constructive criticism to balance excessive positive but it would be dishonest to try and make one up. 5 stars all around.

    This is one of those restaurants where you need a slice after you leave. While the food was exquisite and beautifully presented, there wasn't much. And it wasn't all that cheap after we ordered a lot of dishes. We got 5 or 6 plates. Everything was delicious, don't get me wrong, but in the case of the scallops, for example, each scallop was cut in quarters to give the appearance of more without actual volume. The place is very pretty inside! And the atmosphere is lively. We also enjoyed our cocktails.

    We have dined at WD50 before so were pretty excited to try Alder.Points for creativity for sure but when all is said and done, it just misses the mark. We ordered nearly every dish.     We came here 2 years in a row for my husband's birthday. The service is great, the drinks are great (but expensive!), and the atmosphere is fine. The food is sometimes really delicious and sometimes just okay. Last time we had the pub cheese and it wasn't good at all. We also remembered the pigs in a blanket from last time, so we got them again thinking we must have loved them, but they aren't very good. They're kind of like bagel dogs. Too dry but taste good. We also got shrimps on shrimps (very good), shepherds pie tartare (great), roasted quail (tiny but delicious), and rabbit sausage (good but not memorable). For dessert we had the apple tart and it was great! We came here with a giftcard, but won't be back to spend our own money again!

    Had high hopes for our dinner based on Alder's inclusion in many "best of" lists, but was left feeling very underwhelmed. The service was great and the atmosphere, while loud, was not a hindrance to a good time. Unfortunately, the food didn't deliver and was mediocre at best--lacking the special qualities and interesting flavor combinations most reviewers seemed to have experienced. There are just too many fantastic meals to be had in NY and I can't recommend Alder as a place that should be sought out.

    Terrible experience. Menu and wine list very limited. Even though it's a tapas restaurant food quantities were pitifully small and over priced. Worst of all they seated two people we didn't know at our table of 4 without asking us or telling us why. When we inquired about it we were told "oh they won't bite!" Never again!

    Fun food meets great concept tapas style at this charming neighborhood restaurant. Downside is that many of the wait staff take themselves too seriously and don't match the integrity of the food. Our female server was fond of saying, "Sure" to our genuinely felt "Thank yous!" It is a bummer to have wonderfully articulated, high quality food served by folks who seem to wish that you would just go away.

    Yum. Alder was a delicious blend of classics done the new way. And by the "new way" I don't just mean stuff like latin-korean fusion, I mean really the new way - deconstructed, reconstructed, chemistry, etc. We went for brunch, and I'm still dreaming about my jerk chicken with maple waffles and coconut whipped cream (likely actually whipped coconut milk, no dairy about it).

    Great brunch menu, original and delicious. Incredibly small, expensive (for the size) portions. The Chinese sausage pigs in a blanket were excellent (but only 4 very small half-inch wedges. Ditto for the French onion soup rings (only 4 rings in an order for $10). The coconut waffles with jerk chicken was also excellent. I was disappointed with the pastrami has as the spices were too "holiday season-ish rather than savory. All in all it was a great dining experience.

    Wylie never disapionts! Food was good (there were a few dishes made better then others) other wise it would have been great. Alway interesting .. Which is why we love WD. Staff recommendation was of wine was on point! I have found my new fav wine. Overall good experience, go!

    Small tapas style plates with some really interesting ingredient combos and fresh vibrant ingredients. For a guy and a girl, 4 plates probably will do it but you may want to go 5. It adds up but it's par for the course. With just a couple of glasses of wine or drinks and 4 or 5 plates, prepare to spend over $130 for 2, minimum. I would like to go back and try some other dishes but due to the cost, it becomes more of a rare treat type of place. I'll likely go back but it's not a must.

    Loved it. A perfect spot for adventurous eaters who are game to try lots of different fare. The menu is extremely creative, but more importantly, delicious. Very spirited when it comes to noise, but we weren't looking for a quiet dinner. The wine list is also eclectic, but has some real gems.
