Diner Reviews
  • "Each new dish we tried was more delicious and interesting than the last one! It was fun trying so many different tastes....and our waitress was extremely helpful. My only thing was that the noise level was pretty high...but the wine and food made up for it."

  • "We chose this place because it was a ny mag critic's pic, which usually do not fail me. While the service was great, sitting outside was lovely and the wine list was good, the food was just strange and we really did not enjoy it. One dish- the rye pasta- was actually tasty but should have been warmer. With so many great places to choose from we would not return to Alder."

  • "I've been here a few times but keep forgetting the portion is super small. So not for brunch. Service is great."

  • "Nice casual setting, enjoyed the atmosphere from arrival to departure, food is simple yet delious. We couldnt decide on a dessert at the end so we ordered all 3 desserts & enjoyed them all. The prices are resonable & would recommend this place to anyone looking for a casual eating place that pumps out tasty food."

  • "Went on a brunch date, and had a great time. The pigs-in-a-blanket were beyond amazing as a starter. They forgot my order of Bloody Mary popcorn but the servers were very professional otherwise, and excellent at reading guests and responding appropriately. As a server myself, I was mostly quite impressed. As for the food, it was brunch, so we had pretty standard comfort food, but it was executed as perfectly as a top-tier restaurant should. Can't wait to see what dinner is like."

  • "Loved the cocktails and the diverse menu choices. Gorgeous ambiance as well."

  • "We had a very nice dinner for 5 persons. The chef decided our menu, and it was very good."

  • "I know this place received a bunch of reviews that were pretty glowing - I didn't see it. Ambiance was nice, food was reallllly small portions, and decent. Nothing blew my mind. The Rye pasta was pretty tasty. Interesting combinations. I wouldn't go back or recommend to a friend."

  • "You expect creativity from Wylie Dufresne, and Alder does not disappoint. Everything that came to our table was something wildly inventive, both in presentation and flavor. While everything tasted good, I was surprised at how many dishes I would condersider "fascinating" as opposed to "delicious". Most dishes were good, but there were misses. The chicken caesar wings didn't do anything for us. I did have to send back a drink (the gin and tonic tasted like household cleaning products to both of us.) But again, most dishes were excellent. Choose wisely and you're in for a culinary adventure. The service was good and the space is lovely."

  • "This is more of a visit to the theater than a meal. Each dish is carefully crafted and thought through is a way that makes you want to stand up and applaud after each bite. The food is outstanding, but really requires the diner to want to think about what he/she is eating and not just grazing the surface of that thought. Each dish digs extremely deep into theoretical deconstruction and process. A real treat for foodies, but if you simply want a steak this is probably not the place for you."

  • "We were very excited about going to Alder because we loved the dining experience at WD50. Unfortunately, Alder got it all wrong. We tasted six different dishes and none of them were exceptional enough to justify the high price. The pigs in a blanket were greasy, the summer rolls were thaï takeout quality, the chips and cheese thing could have been bought at a Union Market for a picnic in Prospect Park, the hanger steak was so small, we had to order two of them. The dishes came out so fast, we had a feeling nothing was actually freshly prepared. I think the whole dinner must have lasted 30 minutes. We ended up paying over $200 for the two of us. Ridiculous!"

  • "While the food prep is unusual and very good, the noise level is unacceptable. There was not a busy bar scene the night I was there, everyone was there to dine, yet it was impossible to have a conversation with my tablemate because of the din. The noise was so loud as to be painful and we did not linger because of the discomfort. We will not be returning."

  • "I was looking for a young, vibrant, interesting and different place to meet my daughter and her husband who were here from out of town. This was it! The wine selection was different, but the staff was knowledgable and helpful when making suggestions. And the food was fabulous.....and again the staff was helpful in describing the different choices.....as the names didn't necessarily explain what it was you might be ordering. And loved the tapas and shared plates which we could discuss and compare. As the evening progressed the noise level increased....definitely an issue, but not a deal breaker."

  • "My boyfriend and I were taken on a culinary ride at this gem of a joint this past Friday. We enjoyed choices from the small and medium dishes and finished it off with the root beer pudding! You can't go wrong here. . . the menu is just that good."

  • "For the small plate prices and a name like Wylie Dufresne, I really wanted more from the food. I read reviews similar to the one I'm about to write prior to dining, so I wasn't terribly disappointed when I left. French onion soup rings- great. Caesar wings- ok, nothing special. The hanger steak was fine but again, nothing special. I was most excited about this rye pasta with shaved pastrami- cool concept, but not much more than that. The only real stand out for me was the escargot plate- complex flavors, nice presentation, etc. Cocktails were also excellent, and the service was lovely. I think I would come back not for dinner, but for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers."

  • "The place is very noisy, people almost have to scream to hear themselves. The food comes in REALLY small portions. We asked for 4 different plates: pigs in a blanket, which was good, but as the others, not well served (paying more than 10 dollars on 1 saussage with mayo is terrible). Then, we asked for Crostinis: two demi-slices of bread with artichoke. 18 dollars. And it wasn't even that good. The rest was also too expensive for what was served. Wouldn't recommend it for someone as a restaurant, maybe as a bar. Good wine is served there."

  • "The food combos prepared by the chef are surprising... and delicious! Maybe slightly too much coconut for my taste but overall amazing food. The onion rings are unbelievable. The service was very professional and attentive. Would highly recommend this place for brunch! Also, love the fact that these are starters meant to be shared, it creates a great atmosphere."

  • "Everything is in "shareable" portions, yet the waitresses acted very perturbed when we requested plates. Are we supposed to just eat off the serving dish?? The cocktails are laughably small and the beers were $8 for what you get on a beer sampler tray at other places. This place is coasting on the chef's reputation and is simply not worth the money or attitude."
    Dined on 8/3/2014
  • "It was good. Although the food looks much better than it tasted. Noise level was extremely high. All in all it's okay but you'll find better places for the money."

  • "The food here is the main event. We tried five plates and it was sufficient for two of us with dessert. The oyster mushroom special was amazing and they need to add it to the full menu! Drinks were okay if not a little weak and missing some of the 'essence' components. I'd gladly return to Alder to try all of the other plates I didn't get a chance to."

  • "Everything was way too expensive for the portion size! Also, didn't feel food was that good!"

  • "The food at this restaurant is very good, but I felt that the prices were a little high for the portion size. The off menu assorted platter was a great way to try different things. Shrimp on shrimp and the Caesar chicken wings were prepared very well. The onion rings were excellent and the cheese was a welcome addition. We both enjoyed trying a "short" which is a half sized version of the cocktails offered on the menu. It would be better if all choices on the drink menu (not just 4) were shorts. The wait staff were pleasant and informative, although not overly friendly. They did a good job of getting food out to the tables. I would recommend this restaurant to those that are not shy about spending a little more for good food"

  • "We loved it. Food was very creative and delicious. Pigs in a blanket were fantastic as well as the cheese platter. The rabbit sausage was too strong for me, but my wife loved. Would come back in a heartbeat"

  • "Quite simply this is why you go out to eat. Run don't walk to eat at this resturant."
    Dined on 7/21/2014
  • "This was the biggest disappointment of our 5 night eating and drinking frenzy this past weekend. The hype around the comfort food elevated with playfulness was intriguing but didn't really show on the plate. The 3 starters of Shrimp on shrimp, foie gras, and the pigs in a blanket were the best food of the evening. The squash blossoms were bland with too much batter, the pastrami pasta a gimmick, and the rabbit sausage was o.k. but nothing to get excited about. There was potential (the sauce on the veggies with the rabbit was delicious) but cute names doesn't really make them interesting. The pasta was the most playful in its concept and yes, the noodles tasted like rye but were bland and the pastrami dry. Perhaps needs some attention?"

  • "LOVED the food. However, there was so much noise in the restaurant and it was SO loud that we couldn't hear one another. Would definitely return for the food though."
    Dined on 7/18/2014
  • "Unique tastes and flavors. Some of the bar food was terribly overpriced ($16 for 5 onion rings!) so the bill racks up very quickly. Appetizers/bar food in general were better than the main dishes. Escargots were disappointing and flavorless but sea bass, pasta, pigs in a blanket, desserts were all delicious. Service was not up to par for the quality of the restaurant; our server was clear about wanting to answer some questions but had no patience for beyond that. This type of restaurant really relies on servers to explain the dishes and ingredients, so that was disappointing. We still loved our overall experience, though."

  • "The brunch was horrible. Their bloody mary popcorn was stale. The bacon and egg gyoza was the only good thing. It is a relatively small menu with limited options. The pastrami hash was served with a soft poached egg on top on a completely flat plate. Does this make any sense, obviously when the egg is broken all the great juices are now on the table and not able to be scooped up. The drinks were lackluster and the place was COMPLETELY empty for a Sunday Brunch. Wouldn't return"

  • "Expected to be wooed. What I received was uneven. No dish was fully satisfying: Pu Pu platter, squid salad, escargot toasts, striped bass."
    Dined on 7/11/2014
  • "We truly enjoyed the unique gourmet twist on some basics (e.g., french onion soup + onion rings = french onion soup rings). Our favorite dish was the rye pasta with pastrami, but we absolutely loved everything. The cocktails are also unique, refreshing and delicious. We will definitely dine here again!!!"

  • "I met longtime friends for dinner at my suggestion. The portions of the entrees were very small and I felt there was too much spice/heat in the food that I could not eat it all. No reason for the heat particularly when it was not mentioned on the menu."

  • "Alder has very friendly wait staff. The ambiance is good for dates. I only went for an off menu item so I cant speak to the main menu, but I did have one of the desserts. They have a great root beer pudding."
    Dined on 7/7/2014
  • "We enjoyed ourselves immensely but it was loud and sometime difficult for me to understand our server and her us. That said the service was attentive without being intrusive by all who helped us. In the currently popular world of "small plates" restaurants we felt like we had some pretty extraordinary ones here at Alder; we would recommend it and return."

  • "Overall I had a really nice experience at Alder. I love the way the restaurant looks inside and the staff was happy to answer questions. The food was tasty. I shared the onion rings and a rye pasta. Both were great. I wasn't aware of the small plate concept until I got there so the prices were a bit high for what "I thought" I was getting. I was visiting from out-of-town and the noise level was a bit too loud for me but typical New Yorker's don't mind."

  • "we ordered 3 courses each because server says there portions are very small and the price was fine. But the main menus were not that delicious that I expected. And also the dessert was so small. I ordered corn bread with strawberry something and I got some big bread crumbs. I understand the portions are small because it' s cheap. I think this restaurant will be better when u sit on the bar and order some famous menus that u heard before. But the service was good.they are kind tho."

  • "Alder was a nice setting for a late dinner with my young adult children. They are starting to appreciate what goes in to making a memorable dining experience. Food is number one but also service can make or break a meal. Our "main" waiter (they work as team)was pleasant and somewhat helpful with questions about the menu. However-- at this level I expect the wait staff to not only bring the dish but to present it, describe it and make any anecdote that might be of interest---especially since it is a "tapas" style restaurant. Only when asked was the waiter more than helpful in the description of the dish, other than that each dish was just brought to the table and and nothing else--- I would always opt for a clear description of each dish"

  • "Two of us shared a "pupu platter," which consisted of two pieces each of five different "bites." It was delicious. We then went on to share the escargot dish (nice flavors but hard to distinguish the escargots from the mushrooms) and the soft-shell crabs -- outstanding! Our server, Aaron, did a superb job at explaining every dish in detail and his service was impeccable -- very thorough and attentive. Can't wait to go back."

  • "After years of "meaning" to try wd~50, we found ourselves with an early last-minute table at Alder. Odd advice for a restaurant, but don't come hungry! The strength of Alder lies in its deliciously careful, thoughtful small morsels, not in any sort of stick-to-your-ribs-ness. There's not a bite you'll want to lose to your appetite (except the soft shell crab, a generous helping of grease, crunch & salt). Scotch eggs were a winner, foie gras also perfection. do save room for dessert. Sound like a stupid plan for a whole dinner out (i.e. not much of a dinner at all)? The bar has enough space to audition a plate or two and a fun cocktail (but skip the FOMO unless you're into the taste of Windex, IMO). 7:30 on a Friday still had room."

  • "We weren't sure we wanted another small plates meal at a crowded noisy restaurant, but we were really glad we we tried Alder. The pigs in the blanket were tasty and the chicken liver mousse was creamy and yummy. The rye pasta was innovative and good and the soft shell crab was delicious. Can't say enough about the carrot cake sundae. The service was really nice and not pushy. Although noisy, you could still carry on a conversation. Really had a nice dice dining experience at Alder."
