A word from Alder
The 56-seat neighborhood spot is a modern interpretation of a public house, offering casual food, well-crafted cocktails and an extensive selection of intriguing and affordable wines. In the spirit of every great pub, guests are welcomed to drop in for anything from a drink and a quick bite on the way home after work, to joining with friends or family in sharing a meal.

Chef Wylie Dufresne, along with Chef de Cuisine Ryan Henderson, apply innovative techniques in the kitchen at Alder, taking familiar dishes and flavor combinations and presenting them in their own unique style, celebrating New York City’s diverse food culture in the process. Dufresne and Henderson find their inspiration in their metropolitan surroundings: New York is a city where we can source the best ingredients from around the world and turn them into something distinctly American.

We have dined at WD50 before so were pretty excited to try Alder.Points for creativity for sure but when all is said and done, it just misses the mark. We ordered nearly every dish. The rye pasta and pub cheese were highlights. The rest ranged from so-so to genuinly not good. Service and Atmosphere was great.

We came here 2 years in a row for my husband's birthday. The service is great, the drinks are great (but expensive!), and the atmosphere is fine. The food is sometimes really delicious and sometimes just okay. Last time we had the pub cheese and it wasn't good at all. We also remembered the pigs in a blanket from last time, so we got them again thinking we must have loved them, but they aren't very good. They're kind of like bagel dogs. Too dry but taste good. We also got shrimps on shrimps (very good), shepherds pie tartare (great), roasted quail (tiny but delicious), and rabbit sausage (good but not memorable). For dessert we had the apple tart and it was great! We came here with a giftcard, but won't be back to spend our own money again!

Pigs in a blanket (OK) - Shrimps on Shrimps (Tasty) - Rye Pasta (OK) Food was good, but not great. Small Portions. Service was actually lacking as our waitress didn't speak English very well and she was hard to understand. Felt rushed. Lively crowd, but not talented. Solid Cocktails.

Had high hopes for our dinner based on Alder's inclusion in many "best of" lists, but was left feeling very underwhelmed. The service was great and the atmosphere, while loud, was not a hindrance to a good time. Unfortunately, the food didn't deliver and was mediocre at best--lacking the special qualities and interesting flavor combinations most reviewers seemed to have experienced. There are just too many fantastic meals to be had in NY and I can't recommend Alder as a place that should be sought out.

Terrible experience. Menu and wine list very limited. Even though it's a tapas restaurant food quantities were pitifully small and over priced. Worst of all they seated two people we didn't know at our table of 4 without asking us or telling us why. When we inquired about it we were told "oh they won't bite!" Never again!

Fun food meets great concept tapas style at this charming neighborhood restaurant. Downside is that many of the wait staff take themselves too seriously and don't match the integrity of the food. Our female server was fond of saying, "Sure" to our genuinely felt "Thank yous!" It is a bummer to have wonderfully articulated, high quality food served by folks who seem to wish that you would just go away.

Yum. Alder was a delicious blend of classics done the new way. And by the "new way" I don't just mean stuff like latin-korean fusion, I mean really the new way - deconstructed, reconstructed, chemistry, etc. We went for brunch, and I'm still dreaming about my jerk chicken with maple waffles and coconut whipped cream (likely actually whipped coconut milk, no dairy about it).

Great brunch menu, original and delicious. Incredibly small, expensive (for the size) portions. The Chinese sausage pigs in a blanket were excellent (but only 4 very small half-inch wedges. Ditto for the French onion soup rings (only 4 rings in an order for $10). The coconut waffles with jerk chicken was also excellent. I was disappointed with the pastrami has as the spices were too "holiday season-ish rather than savory. All in all it was a great dining experience.

Small tapas style plates with some really interesting ingredient combos and fresh vibrant ingredients. For a guy and a girl, 4 plates probably will do it but you may want to go 5. It adds up but it's par for the course. With just a couple of glasses of wine or drinks and 4 or 5 plates, prepare to spend over $130 for 2, minimum. I would like to go back and try some other dishes but due to the cost, it becomes more of a rare treat type of place. I'll likely go back but it's not a must.

The dishes were a little hit or miss. We found ourselves liking about 50% of the dishes we tried. Some were a little more creative than they were tasty. Service on the other hand was bad. They brought our appetizer order out to the table next to us, who'd just sat down and hadn't even ordered yet. When they realized what'd happened they let the other table have our appetizer gratis and made us wait another 10-15mins to bring another order of the same out for us. Really weird considering we'd been inconvenienced and the other table got a comp'd item, while we paid for that dish as well as everything else.

I was really excited to try Wylie Dufresne's more casual restaurant (vs. wd ~50). Unfortunately, I was completely unimpressed with the food. The chips that came with the pub cheese and shattered when eaten instead of pleasantly crunching. The "brittle" it was served with (pistachio I think?), was far too soft and broken into small, odd shapes and then stuck in the purple (?) cheese. The wings/onion rings felt very pedestrian, similar to items you'd get from a local pub that put in just a tiny bit of extra effort. The shrimps on shrimps were quite good, but expensive and tiny. The pigs in a blanket missed the mark. If you are going to redo and iconic American dish like this, it better be your best effort, and this wasn't.

We chose this place because it was a ny mag critic's pic, which usually do not fail me. While the service was great, sitting outside was lovely and the wine list was good, the food was just strange and we really did not enjoy it. One dish- the rye pasta- was actually tasty but should have been warmer. With so many great places to choose from we would not return to Alder.

Went on a brunch date, and had a great time. The pigs-in-a-blanket were beyond amazing as a starter. They forgot my order of Bloody Mary popcorn but the servers were very professional otherwise, and excellent at reading guests and responding appropriately. As a server myself, I was mostly quite impressed. As for the food, it was brunch, so we had pretty standard comfort food, but it was executed as perfectly as a top-tier restaurant should. Can't wait to see what dinner is like.

You expect creativity from Wylie Dufresne, and Alder does not disappoint. Everything that came to our table was something wildly inventive, both in presentation and flavor. While everything tasted good, I was surprised at how many dishes I would condersider "fascinating" as opposed to "delicious". Most dishes were good, but there were misses. The chicken caesar wings didn't do anything for us. I did have to send back a drink (the gin and tonic tasted like household cleaning products to both of us.) But again, most dishes were excellent. Choose wisely and you're in for a culinary adventure. The service was good and the space is lovely.

This is more of a visit to the theater than a meal. Each dish is carefully crafted and thought through is a way that makes you want to stand up and applaud after each bite. The food is outstanding, but really requires the diner to want to think about what he/she is eating and not just grazing the surface of that thought. Each dish digs extremely deep into theoretical deconstruction and process. A real treat for foodies, but if you simply want a steak this is probably not the place for you.

We were very excited about going to Alder because we loved the dining experience at WD50. Unfortunately, Alder got it all wrong. We tasted six different dishes and none of them were exceptional enough to justify the high price. The pigs in a blanket were greasy, the summer rolls were thaï takeout quality, the chips and cheese thing could have been bought at a Union Market for a picnic in Prospect Park, the hanger steak was so small, we had to order two of them. The dishes came out so fast, we had a feeling nothing was actually freshly prepared. I think the whole dinner must have lasted 30 minutes. We ended up paying over $200 for the two of us. Ridiculous!

While the food prep is unusual and very good, the noise level is unacceptable. There was not a busy bar scene the night I was there, everyone was there to dine, yet it was impossible to have a conversation with my tablemate because of the din. The noise was so loud as to be painful and we did not linger because of the discomfort. We will not be returning.

I was looking for a young, vibrant, interesting and different place to meet my daughter and her husband who were here from out of town. This was it! The wine selection was different, but the staff was knowledgable and helpful when making suggestions. And the food was fabulous.....and again the staff was helpful in describing the different choices.....as the names didn't necessarily explain what it was you might be ordering. And loved the tapas and shared plates which we could discuss and compare. As the evening progressed the noise level increased....definitely an issue, but not a deal breaker.

For the small plate prices and a name like Wylie Dufresne, I really wanted more from the food. I read reviews similar to the one I'm about to write prior to dining, so I wasn't terribly disappointed when I left. French onion soup rings- great. Caesar wings- ok, nothing special. The hanger steak was fine but again, nothing special. I was most excited about this rye pasta with shaved pastrami- cool concept, but not much more than that. The only real stand out for me was the escargot plate- complex flavors, nice presentation, etc. Cocktails were also excellent, and the service was lovely. I think I would come back not for dinner, but for pre-dinner drinks and appetizers.
