I enjoyed the creative flair and unusual combinations / flavors to the dishes. However I didn't realize that this restaurant serves small plates. We paid $200 for 2 cocktails, 4 brunch dishes and a dessert (dessert was because we were still hungry). and left only moderately satisfied.

We had a group of four, and while the good was delicious and the atmosphere and service great, I left feeling slightly hungry, a little unsatisfied. We each ordered two dishes and two more for the table, but they were served family style. Overall good experience but order up!

I was disappointed with most of the dishes -- after all the reviews was expecting more interesting takes on the food. The popular shrimp on shrimp dish was boring.

We were looking forward to this experience given the reputation of W. Dufresne. The food was interesting and somewhat tasty. The experience could have been improved had the waiter taken the time to explain each dish instead of hurtling everything on the table.

Alder delivers exceptionally intelligence and robust cooking, there are smart aleck tricks with titles and descriptions and ingredients and technique but what bursts in the mouth is delicious and highly pleasurable. The staff are fun, courteous and thoughtful. We were sitting at the common table and were joined by a large group having lots of loud fun making it a bit difficult for us to talk and we were moved to a quiet table for two, given a complementary dish and made to feel comfortable and well-cared for, all with humor and smiles. There is a gracious and fun professionalism to the staff that I appreciate and the food is simply delicous (I would say the deconstructed dessert was the only off-pitch moment). Definitely worth many return visits.

Great atmosphere with wood planks on the ceiling and slate tile serving plates. Every dish was beautifully presented and tasted even better. Everyone shared and sampled the creative dishes. A nice touch when you came to the bar, they immediately served a glass of NYC water while you contemplated the drink list.

Had a wonderful dining experience at Alder. Small plates with ingenious preparation. This is not a stuffy hoity-toity place but delivers with good food and a well considered wine list. Really enjoyed the goat meatballs and the pasta dish and the service was prompt but not pushy. For interesting food and a fun evening please consider Alder.

My husband and I took our 25 year old daughter here for Birthday Brunch. I had taken her to WD-50 a couple of years ago for her birthday and we had the best meal, couldn't get reservations this trip, so we decided to try Alder. The food was amazing, the three of us shared seven "small" plates, which weren't all that small, and then finished by sharing the 3 dessert options. We were stuffed, but we wanted to try as much as possible! Everything was delicious. As was the case with WD-50, here, every bite was well thought out to maximum flavor and effect. We will definitely return. Service was impeccable, we never wanted for anything and each plate came out with a smile and an explanation. We'll be back for sure!

I would come to this restaurant for the Pastrami Pasta over and over again (and not for sharing) the pastrami was incredibly tender and flavorful. The pigs in a blanket were good too. We ordered frog leg wontons, rabbit sausage, lamb tartar, shrimp on shrimps and we though they weren't magnificent, just OK. The frog leg wontons presentation was wonderful tho. I highly recommend the pasta, its worth it.

Upon first look at the menu i was excited to try many of the small plates. That excitement quickly dimishes. The pigs i. The blanket were the only thing that actuay had a taste. The shrimp on shrimp was tasteless Nd the sweetbreads didnt rwsemble ir tAste like any sweetbreads i ever had. The ceasar wings were the biggest joke. Basically they were plain wings that tasted as if they were baked with mo seasoni g at all. The rye pasta " specialty " is slices of pastrami topped with dry , tasteless fresh pasta. The Pple dessert was not cooked properly. they also serve so quick you cannot dine which was ok since the food was such a disaster. Dont bother

I expected better. The food just was not up to WD standards. Our server gave an deliciously sounding description of the goat meatball special, but we were presented with 3 tiny bite-size morsels that could've been pieces cut from an Oscar Myer hotdog, except that they were just utterly bland. We had 8 plates to share for 2 people, and none of the plates were really great; they were all just "okay". If you are going to charge exceptional prices then I expect my taste buds to be wowed. They just weren't with any dish.

10/24/14: Food was nothing like NYTs review. Menu has changed. All food was bland, not worth it, go somewhere else. We had the pub cheese, beets, onion soup rings, tilefish and rabbit sausage. Everything was well executed but no flavor, nothing special. So many other places to go. This should be taken off the NYTs scoop listing. It not up to WD50 standards.

Was drawn to Alder because of Wylie Dufresne. The food was alright but it was nothing to shout about and really, really not worth the huge pricetag. We had 6 tapas-style small plates and only tap water - no alcohol even - and the bill came to $120 with tip. I wanted to cry when the Caesar wings and the french onion gravy rings arrived - essentially dressed up chicken wings and onion rings. :( this disappointment overshadowed the other yummier dishes such as the shrimp on shrimp and the pigs in blanket. I probably won't ever go back.

In typical Wylie Dufresne style, every dish is comprised of ingredients that you wouldn't expect to go together. I think the best thing I had that night was the frog leg wonton soup. That broth was everything. Also try the rye pasta with pastrami it tastes just like a sandwich...expect it's pasta! Wines were great, bartender was great. Worth every penny.

We look forward to going back to Alder next time we are in the East Village! We loved the decor - upscale and calming, with wonderful use of stone and wood (even the menu was presented on a wooden plank!). We ordered six dishes. For us, the most memorable and delicious were the Lamb tartare, Hamachi, Shrimp on shrimp and Sweetbreads. The Cheese and pistachio appetizer was also great, as it is presented on a slate slab and we kept scraping up the cheese to not miss a bite. I'd highly recommend the Dr. Dave's Scrip Pad drink. The only issue we had was that the Rye pasta dish with pastrami was unbearably salty and not pleasant to eat. The Alder staff, however, graciously removed the item from our tab without our asking.

We live nearby and have wanted to try for a while. I'm afraid we were just a bit let down by this experience. Everything was perfectly fine, reasonably tasty, just nothing exceptional. The waitress wasn't particularly friendly, a bit impatient and huffy, but she wasn't horrible. I don't mind paying $21 for a 3 ounce tapas dish on occasion if each bite thrills; this fell flat, and was therefore hugely overpriced in my opinion.

We had an overall ok experience. The server recommended 2-3 plates per guest. We ordered 7 plates and were still quite hungry. The Lamb tartare was one of our favorite. The rye pasta was delicious as well. The head cheese and eggs and Madai dishes lacked salt, although they had really good flavor. The concepts of the dishes were very creative. The wine list was short and sweet, I enjoyed the bad vintage category. We found a great bottle! Unfortunately, we left without dessert so that we could go somewhere else to eat more. Our server hit the steps of service but was not noticeably personable.

Went with 2 friends to celebrate a special birthday. Service was lacking right from the start. Food was interesting, well presented, and tasty. Unfortunately, when it came time each of us to receive our own bill (small towns in Canada can do it but we are led to believe that the technology doesn't exist in NYC???), both the server and manager (?) were unaccommodating. This would have been bad enough but then their behavior turned to disrespectful and insulting. No customer should have to be made to feel like that. Especially after enjoying such a great meal! Unfortunately, my rating I based on how I felt when leaving the restaurant.

My wife and I had extremely high hopes for our first dining experience at Alder and it met every expectation. We tried four different plates and not one of them elicited "That's pretty good, but..." Each was a unique dish that we had never tasted before. You have to try the "Pigs in a Blanket," you'll thank me later. The service was impeccable: attentive but unobtrusive and the staff's recommendations were a hit. I always try and have a constructive criticism to balance excessive positive but it would be dishonest to try and make one up. 5 stars all around.

This is one of those restaurants where you need a slice after you leave. While the food was exquisite and beautifully presented, there wasn't much. And it wasn't all that cheap after we ordered a lot of dishes. We got 5 or 6 plates. Everything was delicious, don't get me wrong, but in the case of the scallops, for example, each scallop was cut in quarters to give the appearance of more without actual volume. The place is very pretty inside! And the atmosphere is lively. We also enjoyed our cocktails.
