Replicating the style of cooking he does for family and friends in his home kitchen, Chef Michael Scelfo prepares humble, unpretentious food that honors tradition of place in its quality. It's how he connects with anyone who joins them at their table.

While reservations are strongly suggested, we also save a portion of the dining room and bar for walk-ins in the event that your request cannot be accommodated, so, please, come on in!

I couldn't really understand anything on the menu, but everything that we ordered was to die for. They brought out the tapas as they were ready and we grazed all evening. The service was very attentive. The cocktails were also delightful."

  • "Had my first meal at Alden and Harlow and will return. The chef creates dishes with such an assortment of flavor sand textures that they touch every part of your palate and tap dance on your tongue. The many vegetable dishes allow yo to eat a meal that when coupled with one of the meats or pastas is not heavy or excessive. The home made rye pasta is fabulous as was the park belly. The grilled carrots had wonderful texture. The only weakness. Is the dessert menu or lack there of. We went straight to the Skae Shack for frozen custard in instead."

  • "This is a very nice addition to the Harvard Square restaurant scene. The food is really terrific and interesting. Everything is reasonably priced. It has a nice bar and the cocktails are good. The main dining area and around the bar can be quite loud, but there's a quieter area in the front of the restaurant. If you're looking to talk to your dinner companion rather than just look at him/her, you should request to sit up there."

  • "We went there for uor 46th anniversary. The price is appropriate for the quality of the food which is excellent. Servers were polite, efficient, knowledgeable, and trained. Food was excellent--we particularly enjoyed the chicken-fried rabbit and the 60-degree egg. We ate 6 dishes; we will have to return to sample the rest of the menu; the difficulty will be in passing up the rabbit for another entree. Suford really enjoyed the McGregor's Garden cocktail. She appreciated the efforts the server went to in helping her pick out the scotch (previously unknown to her) that was just right. Parking is difficult/expensive, but it always has been in Harvard Square."

  • "despite some communication issues. we were promised seating in the quieter front of the dining rm. when the reservation was made. not only did this not happen, the person who seated us told us that he couldn't offer other (quieter) parts of the dining room because they were being specifically reserved for someone. hmmmm also, we asked for no dressing on the salad. came with dressing asked for a candle in the dessert. no candle small things, both of which the server tried to correct after the fact. but like i said, there are communication issues."

  • "Great redo of the old Casablanca space with a creative (and delicious) menu. Chicken fried rabbit, butternut squash salad, and the clams were among our favorite plates (although they were big small plates). Also good to see Cab Franc offered by the glass- a rare find. The prices were a little higher for the plates than I expected, but this place is definitely a treat. Lively bar scene on a Friday and good cocktails."

  • "My family and I went to an early dinner at Alden & Harlow this weekend. The decor was modern and industrial, with reclaimed light fixtures and succulents. We sat in the "greenhouse," with walls of succulents and a skylight. We shared the Catania cocktail, kale salad, pickled corn cakes, charred broccoli, and peas with chanterelles -- all delicious. Next was the short rib and brisket burger (the first one that came out was undercooked and the second a little more well-done than medium) with homemade chips, the clams, lamb, and rye pasta. I ate the clam sauce with a spoon, and the lamb was great. The rye pasta and the carrot mash that came with the lamb were the only items I didn't love. Our waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable as well."

  • "Very innovative small plates. This is not a formal format, but plates come out at the pace they are ready. The interior is an interesting and well-decorated space. In general it is a pretty loud, busy space. I was hoping for more of a romantic experience and had asked for a quiet or corner table on opentable, which was not provided. We were seated pretty near the kitchen area which was busy, and the worst part was there was another table for 2 about 2 feet away on the side of a pole. Could hear everything they talked about. I asked the host if anything else was available and he said no but seemed sorry. There are a few booths along the bar, I wiuld highly recommend getting one of these if you'd like some privacy or sense of romance."

  • "Yet another "small plate" restaurant on map. Yawn. We found several of the dishes had too much seasoning each dish overpowering the last. And worst of all was the burger which tasted like a salt-lick. We couldn't even taste the bread or the meat...just salt. I will definitely give them another chance, fully recognizing that they just opened. Overall the service was great and I love what they've done with the interior. Front section was a little dark but overall warm and inviting. Our table near the back entrance was taken over by and arctic blast of cold air, which was assume was from the air conditioning. We actually had to put our jackets on to keep the cold air off our necks."

  • "The bar is great, with awesome service and delicious drink creations. Bar manager Seth deserves a huge shoutout but his team is also solid. The food is creative and generally awesome - the onion dip is a must, though sometimes the accompanying chips are better than others, the beef neck is always in our order as well, and now we are addicted to the smoked chocolate bread pudding with salt ice cream. The oyster gratinee is not a repeat - much prefer mine on the half shell when they are Duxbury's finest. The welcoming plate of pickled green beans was also awesome. We have been four times since it opened and it's consistently impressed and made us want to return."

  • "I had set up a reservation for the two of us for late, thinking we'd stroll in earlier and grab a table. Little did I know that this place would be hopping, hard. We ended up squeezing in at the bar and eating there. I can't say enough about A&H, it was absolutely fantastic. The food was outstanding, the service was perfect, and the drinks were brilliant. Although it was packed, the ambiance led to romanticism, and all around nothing was left to be desired. Highly recommended."

The food is interesting and surprising, but not always technically perfect or entirely convincing in taste and texture -- combinations don't always add up (the smoked mussels, for instance), flavors don't always come through clearly. But the pork belly is worth a visit by itself; wines are good and interesting; and service is efficient and enthusiastic (if sometimes a bit too much so)."

  • "My husband and I really liked this restaurant. Good atmosphere and very busy on a Friday night. You can choose a lot of small plates. The roasted carrots were to die for, amazing! Most of the others plates were inventive and excellent. The only bad dish was the dessert Mast brothers chocolate. The dish was so disappointing, it was just 3 little pieces of chocolate on a plate with some fruits and 2 pieces of grilled buttered bread. Not original, very lazy. They could at least melted the chocolate on the bread or something. But the rest of the meal was great."

  • "Alden & Harlow is a fabulous addition to the dining scene of Harvard Square, Cambridge AND Boston. The dishes really worked. They weren't just interesting sounding concoctions that then lacked flavor once you actually ate them. Every single dish we tried, from small to larger, was bursting with flavor. We were unanimous in loving everything we tried from the carrot appetizer to the rye pasta. Who knew that carrots could be that fabulous AND interesting? I loved every dish and also our server who could not have been more perfect. A great evening all around! Bravo Alden & Harlow!"

  • "Went the other night for "girls night". The waiter told us to order a few small plates to start and then take it from there. Each plate was more interesting than the next. Smoked cashews, kale salad, butternut squash salad, cauliflower kimchee, scallop crudo, caponata on grilled bread, charred broccoli. Yum. We chose skate cheeks, sworfish and lamb for entrees. Each delicious, each interestingly prepared. Passed on dessert as we were full. Service is attentive but not intrusive, wine list is satisfying and well suited to the food. Looking forward to a repeat visit."

  • "Each dish was unique and tasty. There were 4 of us and we shared 7 dishes--felt full enough, and each dish was able to be sampled by each of us. The wait staff was very attentive, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and will go back. We did notice that we were by far the oldest people in the restaurant....we all 65 and older, the majority looked to be 35 and under."
