My husband and I dined here with another couple for my husband's birthday. We read great things about the restaurant, but I was hesitant to try it due to its uncommon menu selections. However, I was pleasantly surprised. The food is fantastic. The four of us are huge foodies and love dining throughout Cambridge and Boston. This is by far one of our favorites now. Looking forward to coming back. Hope the burger is available next time!

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. I called ahead and told them the occasion and they knew what to do. The seated us in a corner which was very comfortable and pretty much made the evening perfect. Alden and Harlow was recommended to me by a friend, and I would definitely pass on a recommendation myself. Oh and not to mention the food was excellent. The cauliflower dish was our favorite.

  • Great food, unimpressive service
    OpenTable Diner Since 2014
    Dined on 11/22/2014
The food was truly incredible, creative and delightful - eating was a wonderful adventure. The waitstaff however was underwhelming, to say the least. Our waitress lacked any enthusiasm or personality, and when we expressed emphatic interest in understanding more about the menu and how each dish was crafted and presented, we we're met with a cursory and disinterested description that gave us no more information beyond what was already presented on the menu. A vibrant and knowledgable server can make all the difference in a dining experience, and a place with food as excellent and creative as Alden and Harlow could really benefit from servers who are excited to talk about the effort and intention that goes into the food. Other interactions with wait staff besides our server were equally uninspiring and it was disappointing to dine at such a fine restaurant with such below average service.

A lively (if a bit too loud) place with excellent food. Some of the best dishes have little or no meat which quite refreshing. My wife and I were there Saturday night and really enjoyed the creative food. While not a vegetarian, my wife leans toward the veggies and often has vegetarian entrees where available. Mostly they're disappointments. At A&H, the veggie dishes might have been better than the meat dishes. Try the broccoli and the polenta.

My wife and I had early dinner reservations on a Saturday night. The most outstanding part of our visit was the service - they've really got things figured out. Everyone who came to our table was friendly, professional, and knew everything about the menu. Very attentive and accommodating as well, and the pacing of the dishes was perfect. This mirrors the experience of friends who have recommended Alden & Harlow. The menu is all small plates. We ordered the tallow-fried brussel sprouts "snack", the chicken liver salad, the pickled corn pancakes, the pork belly, and the "secret", "off-menu" burger. - Brussel Sprouts: Very small, and not recognizably "tallow-fried." On the whole tasty but not very impressive. There are better brussel sprouts to be had, for sure. - Chicken Liver Salad: Delicious "salad" of chicken livers, crispy chicken skins, eggs, and herbs. Paired well with a perfectly grilled piece of bread. Unctious, crispy, livery goodness. Would order again and again. - Pickled Corn Pancakes: Perfectly cooked pancakes, and the accompaniments were delicious. - Pork Belly: My wife and I love pork belly, and were super excited about this. It was largely a disappointment. Though the skin was "crispy", it was also extremely leathery, and we had extreme difficulty cutting it with the steak knife that was provided. We observed the same difficulty at the table next to us. The pork belly flavor was OK; the other flavors in the dish (grits and apples) were fantastic. - Secret Burger: we were lucky enough to get one of these. The toppings were a duck liver butter with a stinky cheese, smoked mushrooms, and sour cherries. Truly decadent and unbelievable - when people say they make one of the best burgers in Boston, they're not kidding. Served with a generous portion of, quite literally, the best homemade potato chips I've ever had in a restaurant. Overall - fantastic service, slightly uneven food. We will return for the burger.

The food is very average, the menu is small and choices are very limited. I understand being a waitress is not the best job, but if your customers can sense that's just not right. We will not be going there ever again although we eat in Harvard square every weekend.

You don't need to order as many small plates per person as the server recommends. We found two per person (or a starter and a small plate) was just right. I know the concept is to share family style but the plates and sizes aren't ideal for it. Granted the good was so good, few of us wanted to share anyway.

I rounded up four friends who I haven't seen recently and picked Alden & Harlow to get together. It was a really fun place to get back in touch! The energy was great, great ambiance and lighting, and delicious food. Don't be fooled when they recommend you get 2-3 of the plates to fill you up. Everyone in our party ordered 2 each and we definitely had too much food. I'd say for a group of girls, 2 entrees each tops or if there are two of you get three and share. I did like the "sharable" nature of the food too... it came out when it was ready (so not all together) and the sizes are in between a full entree and a tapas portion. Also, in addition to the food being great they had interesting drink selections too. Get a reservation early!

Wonderful tapas style dinner using local produce with an adventurous menu such as smoked lamb belly ribs with carrot and cashew tahini with sour orange glaze with a lighter fare of honey glazed burrata - pumpkin caponata crispy lonza and pepitas. Young vibe yet welcoming towards families who want their children to appreciate an interesting menu. The wine list is nice. The service was excellent even on a busy evening!

We loved this place. Everything on the menu is share-only, the wonderfull waitress explained that we needed 2-3 items per person. We tried the fried bok-choy: WoW!!!! Citrus salad: fresh, nice combination with caramelized fennel. Rabbit stew: best ever. Burger: ok but don't understand all the fuzz about the burger. It's actually a bit salty, meat is fine though, but there are so many nice things on the menu that Į would skip the burger. Everything is perfect here if you're looking for a comfy night out!

Shareable small plates is the way to go here. The sugar pumpkin salad was a hit, pasta-like in appearance, very refreshing. We tried the chicken fried rabbit and each loved our bite, the skate and vluefish were both delicious. Get there early to ensure availability of the burger of the day- well worth it.

I took my husband to Alden & Harlow for his birthday and noted that in my reservation. We had a nice drink at the bar and then moved to a table, where we had really good food. As the restaurant filled up, the noise became unbearable--hard to even have a decent conversation or focus on the food. I had to remind the server to put a candle on my husband's dessert--it didn't look like she even knew we were celebrating his birthday. The bread pudding dessert came with a candle but tasted awful. They took both the dessert and our drinks off our bill. When I mentioned the noise, they said it was quieter in the front part of the restaurant. This was our first time in the restaurant, not at the bar. Why didn't they tell us that before, especially since they knew we were celebrating my husband's birthday. I love the food, but the noise makes it impossible to enjoy and the service is impersonal.

Alden and Harlow is relatively new to Harvard Square. I came as part of three couples who regularly eat meals together and this was my suggestion. As a die-hard Henrietta's Table aficianado I had some trepidation about A&H, having only eaten rather spicy dinner food there. But in a word it was wonderful. Eggs, pancakes, wonderful pastry, great drinks - everything was top notch. We are definitely coming back here.

We have been wanting to get to Alden and Harlow for a long time, and finally made it on Sat, 11/15. Our group of four was seated immediately, and our server soon followed with his query re bottled/tap water. One member of our party ordered a special drink and really enjoyed it; the rest of us enjoyed our wine choices. With a little assistance, we ordered a good variety of dishes. As usual with tapas, the dishes arrived in random order—but each was well-prepared, beautifully presented, and delicious. Each of our final dishes was served in tandem with the others. The food is innovative and delicious. Our server was attentive without being too present. Our only complaint is the noise. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, and for some reason, the noise level is at a constant high in this section. Each of us was hoarse from trying to speak loud enough for the others to hear.As we left the restaurant, we realized that it was a bit quieter in the bar area. If we return, I will definitely ask for a table in this section.

I was so excited to get a reservation that I didn't mind going at 5:15 on a Saturday. At this time I would've expected higher quality service. Also towards the end of our meal it was apparent they wanted to turn our table over because the server staff was like vultures hovering over us. The food was amazing - especially the lamb ribs. I would give this place a 2nd chance based on the food alone, however I will try the bar area next time.

Kale salad and broccoli with squash hummus was delicious. Portions were surprisingly large. Lamb belly was tasty and well cooked but too much fat. Wine and cocktails were great and the bartenders were terrific. Only disappointment was that they ran out of the burger. We sat in the bar because it was quieter than the other half of the I look forward to returning to try other dishes. . Food was interesting and well prepared.

The menu is full of delicious and interesting options... very hard to decide. They were out of a few things so that helped narrow down the choices. We ordered 4 plates between the two people (plus a yummy dessert) and we were both quite full by the end. Stand outs for me were the honey-glazed burrata and heirloom eggs with bocquerones. The chicken fried rabbit was delicate and delicious too. Next time, I'll skip the lamb ribs and try the snails. On the downside, the room was very smoky and I carried the smell with me for the rest of the night.

This was truly an unexpected pleasure. With an array of small plates, I am often disappointed in one or two. That was not the case at Alden and Harlow. Each plate was more creative and delicious than the last. Can't wait to return. My only criticism is that the desserts do not stand up to the rest of the menu. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives for sweets in Harvard Square.

A&H has become quite popular -- don't even think of coming without a reservation, which you'll need to make well in advance. The menu is inventive and the food is expertly prepared. Thanks to the tapas format (they recommend ordering 2-3 items per person which is about right), things can get very expensive very quickly, but what you get is generally worth the price.

We wanted to try the restaurant since it opened. We used to come here when it was Casablanca. We went for brunch so I can only comment on that. We ordered a croque Monsieur and it was not tasty. It said it comes with brioche bread but it came with a toasted bread. The wild mushroom frittata was shaped round rather than triangle which was interesting but it was overly salted. The vegetables that came with were crunchy but again super salty. They forgot to bring few items at the end but when they brought, they took them out of the bill which was a nice gesture. Everything also had a pork flavor even the dessert. I will try the dinner. I love the space and the decoration!

The food was definitely unique here. The chef is clearly a fan of salty sweet combinations - which is great but was overwhelming when it was super strong in almost all the dishes. The rabbit stew was great although both very sweet and very salty (which was phenomenal, loved this dish!). The broccoli was overly sweet as well. The ribs weren't but I think that because they were incredibly charred and fatty, which ruined any other flavors. The bread pudding was smokey, which was interesting and went well with the fantastic salted vanilla ice cream. The cocktails in the menu were good but ordering off menu resulted in drinks being made incorrectly, even after I checked if they could make it. Overall, interesting but overrated

This was our second time here. I really liked the Scarlet Letter beet-based cocktail (an acquired taste for some, I'm sure), the burrata, and the skate wing. I wish there had been only Jerusalem artichokes with the skate wing, instead of a mixture with potatoes. The staff was very helpful after we had messed up the reservation on our end, and misremembered the time.

The appetizers are great, especially the broccoli - enough to share easily. The mains are less exciting - the lamb was OK, nothing special; ditto for the bluefish. The tables are too small. Why are so many stuffed into the space? $$? This is the major issue. But still a gem of a new restaurant - just make it better. We'll keep coming back.

The sauces are so awesome I would appreciate it if they either offered bread (charge or no charge) along with the plates - if you ask and pay for it, you eventually get some kind of dry grilled bread, but it's way too late by then - the sauces are cold or gone! I bet they can make some killer bread here if they focus on it.

While the menu features a lot of meat entrees and no vegan ones, I was impressed at how knowledgeable and accommodating this restaurant is to vegans. I called ahead of time and the person who spoke to me understood my question fully and told me exactly what could be made vegan. When we got there, I found they had even made a note of it with our rsvp. The waiter again went through the menu with me and helped me with several options, including ensuring that the dishes were prepared with EVOO instead of butter, etc. Most impressive of all was dessert--while nothing on the dessert menu was vegan, the waiter consulted with the chef and they prepared a special dessert for me that included dark chocolate and fruit. Great job, Alden and Harlow!
