A word from Aldea
In May 2009, Chef George Mendes opened Aldea in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. Named after the Spanish word for village, the restaurant’s menu is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and Mendes’ heritage. The chef adds a modern, seasonal approach to create a menu perfectly balanced between rusticity and refinement.

Food very good, subtle, maybe a little expensive for what it is. But filet amazing. Swordfish too. Servers seemed poorly trained--salad delivered to wrong party. Wrong dessert sent to Birthday girl. Maybe because it was a holiday?

The four of us were delighted with the service and the quality of the food. The duck confit and the hanger steak were amazing as was the mussel soup. The deserts were fresh, interesting and delicious. Service was excellent. We could hear each other talk. We can't wait to go back again.

Food was excellent. A couple of amuses (I particularly like the "frozen gimlet" topped with cucumber). I started with a gorgeous egg, with bacalhau, black olive, & potato crisps. Next I had baby squid with a romesco sauce and squid ink, followed by venison steak with mushrooms and baby vegetables. My wife started with uni toast, then had matsutake and chanterelles with Benton’s bacon , greens, and egg. Her main was a variation on the classic Portugese pork and clams, with suckling pig. Every thing delicious, and well-presented. Service was efficient and polite but not intrusive, lovely space. It was our anniversary and they were great about corkage ($35) so I could bring a wedding year wine. We'll be back.

The food at Aldea is very well presented and prepared. One exception, we were presented with a appertizer starter from the kitchen and were told to grab it off the tray. We noticed the tray was actually placed on the table for other. The food is off excellent quality, the timing of our entree was delayed and we had to inquire about the status after a period of time, this affected our overall opinion. We would we go back and try to sit in the kichen observation area, looked like fun.

Aldea bills itself as a Portugese seafood restaurant, but the decor is Asian and the food is basically iberian inspired nouvelle French cuisine. The service is truly friendly and super-helpful. The wine list is very good. The entrees are quite good, but the appetizers, sides, breads and desserts are an odd mix of experimental--yet blandish--affectations. For example, I had a lovely piece of tender cod as an entree, served with a side of seafoam. Yes--what at first appeared to be perhaps a side of frothy potatoes turned out to be a very plain whipped air foam-thing, not really for eating. My companion had a soft and tender pork entree which she enjoyed. Overall: somewhat disappointing given the high prices.

A second visit to Aldea was even better than the first. The expertly prepared and delicious food is Spanish and Portuguese with a modern presentation. Delicious. Varied. Richly flavored. Unusual. And in keeping with an excellent kitchen the food you order is the food it is. Today that is a big deal. We made a reservation for two weeks hence.

    - arrived significantly early, but host was happy to seat us - two patrons behind us were excessively loud, but out of restaurant's control - had the tasting menu and were offered complimentary bread and butter - service was quick, descriptions were thorough and staff was very well mannered and knowledgeable - some of the wine/dish pairings didn't come out exactly on time - dishes grew in flavour and boldness further into the meal and we were full by the end - overall great experience

Sat at the bar for dinner. Bartender was nice enough and able to explain the menu. However, he offered inconsistent service. The rest of the folks dining at the bar got bread and bar snacks. Not me! I don't think it was deliberate on his part, as he seemed nice enough. But the inconsistency is still not OK and makes me not want to return. Food was good from start to finish and just the right portions.

We reserved a table at Aldea, after seeing their online menu. We were not disappointed - the food was as advertised, well prepared from excellent ingredients, the decor beautiful, and the service attentive and accommodating. Two main issues prevented me from giving 5 stars: first, for the portion sizes, Aldea is overpriced. With tax and tip, we ended up with an almost $200 bill for two starters, two mains, 1 cocktail, 1 dessert and water. I'm not one for stuffing the guests, but had we been bigger eaters we would not have been full. Second - saltiness of dishes, which slightly hindered us from experiencing the full range of additional flavors in them. I would return, and recommend it to others, but this constitutes fair warning.

This is the highest food quality for the price asked to pay for it in Manhattan. Chef Mendes gives new meaning to consistency. I brought two very wealthy friends to dinner Friday evening who can afford to eat anywhere they want in Manhattan. They were very impressed and then the check arrived and they were impressed again. When booking online there were 9:30pm and 9:45pm available. I took the 9:30pm slot and my guests arrived 5 min early. As soon as they sat down they were asked when I was coming (I arrived 1-2 min before 9:30pm) as their kitchen is closing. If they wish to close the kitchen early then they should not list either time slots as available. None of us were late but were pressured to order as soon as we sat down - this wasn't even the last seating according to the listing online. I have spend three birthdays at this restaurant and loved every experience - this time was a disappointment even though the food was great as always. Not what I expect from a top NYC restaurant.

Our second visit here after several years when it was new. Seems to have lost the edgey vibe and energy. Wine list not kept current - they were out of our first selection. Server was not at all familiar with list - for a 1 star I was surprised. The wine person on duty simply pointed at other " popular" bottles without really trying to pair with food choices - never even asked about what we'd be eating which was disappointing at this restaurant. Food was delicious but the wine choice experience subpar. Also the bare tables - seemed wrong and I don't recall that from when it was new.

Service was terrific, the tables are small for serious eaters, the space is nice. Bacalao croquettes were very smooth but benign. Squid ala plancha was gooey/pasty and we didn't care for the overpowering sauce with the grilled octopus. Scallops were very nice, excellent hen of the woods mushrooms. Smoked trout was prepared perfectly but the confit potatoes were so bland and unsalted - it could have been a perfect dish, The thinly slice apples added a fresh, interesting, crunch. Very nice, reasonably priced wine list. Everything was original and the thought behind it evident, not always well executed, generally lacking salt and texture. We really appreciated the quality of the service. So much potential here to be a great restaurant.

The octopus appetizer was really good. The rest of the food (shrimp appetizer, Arroz De Pato, etc) was kind of bland and uninteresting. Very surprising given what we had read about the place. Not likely to return nor to recommend to others. Service was strangely rushed although the manager was quite responsive to this issue.

The shrimp appetizer was ok, a tad too garlicky and I did not care for the saffron sprigs. The duck rice deconstruction from the traditional dish did not deliver. The rice had an unpleasant acidic aftertaste, the chouriço slivers were minuscule and crackling instead of the traditional moist and flavorful and generous. The duck itself was very nicely done a good departure from the traditional twice cooked breast. The codfish was the most disappointing dish, as it was bland and the charred corn did not balance the dish.

Aldea is a jewel of a restaurant. The decor is sophisticated, spare and easy on the eye. The food is a delight. The noise level is such that four people can converse over dinner as though at home, i.e., mercifully quiet. I had the scallops, my husband had the delicious gazpacho and lamb shoulder, I don't recall what our friends ate, but we all had clean plates by dinners end and were well beyond happy and satisfied. With the exception of our waiter, the wait staff could not have been nicer. He had an unfortunate personality being officious when asked a question. He was the only clunker in an otherwise sterling evening.
