A word from Aldea
In May 2009, Chef George Mendes opened Aldea in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. Named after the Spanish word for village, the restaurant’s menu is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and Mendes’ heritage. The chef adds a modern, seasonal approach to create a menu perfectly balanced between rusticity and refinement. Continued

  • "We go to NYC about twice a year for several days. We try different restaurants each time but we had to come back to Aldea because everything about it is good, the service, food and atmosphere. We will be back at the end of the summer, early fall to celebrate our anniversary too. "

  • "Given the Michelin star and great reviews, I had high expectations. We got the octopus to start off, which was the highlight of the meal. My husband had the flank steak, which was good but rather boring. I had the arroz de pato, since I had heard this was a specialty. Was I disappointed! The duck crackling and duck confit in the rice were delicious, but the slices of breast topping the dish were full of fat. I know duck is fatty, but I was expecting the fat would have been rendered and the skin would have been crispy. Overall, the dish was very heavy and not something I would recommend. The prices for food and wine are reasonable and the service was great (although a bit intrusive), but not a place I would go back to."

You can have a conversation in this civilized soundscape: so rare, so precious a bonus. The cocktails & Portuguese wines are zesty (& fairly priced). The food reflects the season; in winter, the venison was a standout, & now it's spring lamb (astoundingly sweet) & beautiful peas. If you have an allergy, it's respected. Every plate seems original & yet accessible. We invariably leave there happy (except that we're sorry to go),"

  • "Aldea is one of my favorite restaurants in NYC. My friend and I went last night and sat at the counter facing the kitchen, so it was nice to see the chefs preparing our food. The food was incrediable. I highly recommend the sea urchin toast, it melts in your mouth. Other appetizers we tried are the mushrooms, which were delcious as well as the spanish octopus, which was cooked perfectly. As for entrees I tried the Arroz de pato, Aldea's signature dish. It was amazing, the slices of duck were so flavorful. My friend had the suckling pig, absolutely delicious, moist as well as flavorful. Great wine/cocktail list too. The service was excellent and I plan on going back very soon."

  • "Maybe an off night for the staff, but I was a little disappointed this time around. Visited on a recent Tuesday evening. Despite the restaurant not being overly busy, service was noticeably slow, a bit disorganized and surprisingly disinterested in our table of three. Rather a different experience than those we've had in several previous visits. Food however was very nice, as we've come to expect."

  • "We were very much looking forward to dining at Aldea, having lived in Spain and all over the world we have grown to appreciate great food. We're still scratching our heads trying to understand what went wrong - from the service (40 minutes between courses, empty water glasses, complete lack of attention) to the food (average at best across the board, significantly overcooked octopus, and genuinely disappointing). Unfortunately there is no way in good conscience that I could ever recommend this restaurant, what a disappointment."

  • "The menu is ever changing. The challenge is narrowing down the selection from all the ones you want try. The flavour combinations sometimes seem odd on the menu but are always outstanding in practice. All the dishes were cooked perfectly. The service is just perfect. They have an outstanding wine list and the waiter made an excellent recommendation."

  • "service was so so. waiters would come then disappear for awhile. took a long time to even place an order. everyone was friendly though. food - had really high hopes but it just wasn't that good. suckling pig was not crispy enough. i know sardines are fishy but it just wasn't seasoned properly. probably won't come back given all the other options available."

  • "Most portuguese dishes are real not just an accent of the originalt.Stylish decor but I missed Portuguese porcelane Galos.The cod fish croquettas need more "bacalau'less potatoes. I missed alheiras,berbigao (clams ) with garlic+wine sauce(Bulhao Pato). Also as old colonies cuisine would you add to the Maya menu : gambas piripiri a Mozambique, chacuti (Goa)."

Aldea is absolutely deserving of all the accolades its received. We've visited NYC 5 times (we reside in GA) in the last 14 months - this was a great place and provided unbelievable value for the superb food served."

Food felt like it had come out of the Mediterranean, as if we had been transported to a Barcelona restaurant. We had the chef's table (actually a counter-like table for six) to watch the kitchen proceedings, and seeing the cooking staff and Chef de Cuisine in action was like having dinner and a show. Remarkable place."

  • "This was our first time eating here, and we were SO impressed, we're planning on a return visit asap. The nine course tasting seemed a bit excessive, but we went for it, along with wine pairing. The courses were more "tapas" style, which was a relief! Each course was outstanding! And the wine pairing was very good, with excellent pours, allowing you to savor the food and wine (as opposed to SOME wine pairings we've experienced where they offer just a mouthful of wine with each course) The service was impeccable. The staff couldn't have been nicer. We felt very comfortable during our stay, never rushed and in fact felt so comfortable, we didn't want to leave!! We WILL return here for sure."

  • "The food and service were great. The serving staff came by just enough to make sure you never went empty on your drink and you always had bread but not so frequent that you get interrupted. It was our 1st wedding anniversary and Aldea added nice subtle things like a menu saying Happy Anniversary as well as writing it on our desserts in sauce. The chef also made us a special appetizer for our anniversary which was really, really good and a nice surprise. Next time, we'll go and try to sit at the chef's table to watch them cook. It's a great place to have romance or just fun!"

  • "Our group of six enjoyed the privacy and spaciousness of sitting at the big round table on the second floor. Service was hospitable, professional, and charming. From the bread to dessert - everything was delicious. Favourites were baby squid salad, octopus salad, diver scallops, and the 'sonhos' (donuts) for dessert melted in your mouth. Wines were well chosen. Can't wait to eat there again!"
