A word from Aldea
In May 2009, Chef George Mendes opened Aldea in Manhattan’s Flatiron neighborhood. Named after the Spanish word for village, the restaurant’s menu is inspired by the Iberian Peninsula and Mendes’ heritage. The chef adds a modern, seasonal approach to create a menu perfectly balanced between rusticity and refinement. Continued

Diner Reviews
  • "Interesting, eclectic Mediterranean menu. Great service and small but very well chosen wine list. The open kitchen is great. Would definitely come back."

  • "From start to finish, an exceptional meal with impeccable service. We did the tasting and wine pair (and a beer thrown in too with the octopus course), and we loved the entire presentation."

  • "Service was terrific, the tables are small for serious eaters, the space is nice. Bacalao croquettes were very smooth but benign. Squid ala plancha was gooey/pasty and we didn't care for the overpowering sauce with the grilled octopus. Scallops were very nice, excellent hen of the woods mushrooms. Smoked trout was prepared perfectly but the confit potatoes were so bland and unsalted - it could have been a perfect dish, The thinly slice apples added a fresh, interesting, crunch. Very nice, reasonably priced wine list. Everything was original and the thought behind it evident, not always well executed, generally lacking salt and texture. We really appreciated the quality of the service. So much potential here to be a great restaurant."

  • "The place is smaller than what I saw online but the staff was amazing... Very friendly, they work as a team to ensure our table was clean between each course, our drinks ready. The food was fantastic drinks were really good. I didn't think it was pricey a little over $300 for four celebrating a birthday is very good to me. Food range from $8 snacks to $30 dinner. Overall, I loved it and would go again for sure."

  • "The octopus appetizer was really good. The rest of the food (shrimp appetizer, Arroz De Pato, etc) was kind of bland and uninteresting. Very surprising given what we had read about the place. Not likely to return nor to recommend to others. Service was strangely rushed although the manager was quite responsive to this issue."

  • "My special occasion was made extra special by the exceptional cuisine we enjoyed at Aldea. We ordered the prefix five course menu and enjoyed it along with the two additional tastings offered by the kitchen. At every turn there was a new experience in taste. Each dish was a complete surprise to the senses. Aldea helped ensure that my special occasion was not only special, but memorable as well."

  • "Aldea is deserving of its accolades by having the makings of every great restaurant. By each natural restaurant dimension they perform well. The Mediterranean cuisine is thoughtfully and carefully prepared and the flavors are wonderful. Have been several times and expect to do the tasting sometime in the future when the time is available."

  • "Aldea is a jewel of a restaurant. The decor is sophisticated, spare and easy on the eye. The food is a delight. The noise level is such that four people can converse over dinner as though at home, i.e., mercifully quiet. I had the scallops, my husband had the delicious gazpacho and lamb shoulder, I don't recall what our friends ate, but we all had clean plates by dinners end and were well beyond happy and satisfied. With the exception of our waiter, the wait staff could not have been nicer. He had an unfortunate personality being officious when asked a question. He was the only clunker in an otherwise sterling evening."

  • "The cooking by Aldea chef George Mendes rivals that of the "big deal" restaurants in town that are impossible to get into. He is awesomely talented and the preparations his kitchen turns out are delicious -- you want to stop talking and savor every single bite."

  • "From the hostesses to our server and everyone in between the service was outstanding. Food was delicious and we were so glad we went for the pix-fixe menu. Great cocktails and loved the Portuguese and Spanish wine selections. Sat at the chef's counter and had a wonderful time! We will definitely return!"

  • "Came here with a friend on a Thursday evening, received the best seat in the house (chef's counter). I personally love the open kitchen concept, enjoyed watching the chefs work their magic. Every dish was nothing short of amazing. I have to say my fave was the Spanish octopus. The buttery uni will melt in your mouth, indulge in a beautifully plated Portguese sardines, warming up to a generous portion entree wild stripe bass (thumbs up) and their signature sea salt Chatham cod, can't forget the scrambled eggs with bacalao(innovation at its best). Dont forget to check out the dessert menu, to all the yuzu lovers please try the honey sponge cake. Had a fantastic evening at Aldea would definitely come back."

  • "Went here for my girlfriends birthday. Aldea exceeded every expectation. The service was outstanding. The food and presentation was top notch. Not one dish on the tasting menu was less than perfect. Great cocktails and wine selection with a knowledgable staff."

  • "Be careful about ordering the $75 4-course prix fixe dinner. Depending on what you choose for each course, it may cost less to order the same choices a la carte. Of our two prix fixe dinners, one would have been $77 a la carte but the other would have been $71. Desserts were spectacular."

  • "We needed a place near Union Square to meet some friends so we could talk and get better acquainted. We got our reservation same day for Friday night, and the whole experience great. The most remarkable thing about the restaurant was that it was quiet enough that we 4 50-somethings could hear through the whole 2 and 1/2 hour dinner even when 2 large parties were seated by us an hour in. The food was delicious--extraordinary bread, lovely mussel soup, trout, diver scallops and arroz con pato all outstanding. The flan and sherbet desserts also excellent: the flan brought an unusual twist to this old standard and delighted us. The decor was subdued but lovely, and contributed to our sense of calm and rest at the end of the work week."

  • "My wife and I have had another wonderful dinner at Aldea. I ordered by usual 2 eggs as a pre-appetizer and the octopus as an appetizer. For my entree, I had the lamb and treated myself to scoops of brunt bread ice cream and pear and orange blood carrot sherbet for dessert. We have never left unsatisfied and always look forward to our next meal by Chef Mendes. Try it...you'll like it!!!"

  • "My wife and I went to Aldea for my birthday. My wife had seen George Mendes on a food show and was impressed. We had the Chef's Tasting Menu, which was excellent. That way, we were exposed to the variety of his food. All of the courses displayed his creativity. The seafood reminded us of the Italian feast of seven fishes. This is the Portugal version. The duck breast was also excellent. The pre-dessert and the dessert were delicious. The service was superb. The restaurant was very quiet, which we like. They knew it was my birthday and they showed that at dessert time by inscribing Happy Birthday on my plate and inserting a candle in my dessert. A perfect dinner!"

  • "We were visiting whilst on vacation, having found out this restaurant had acquired a Michelin star. We weren't disappointed with the quality of the food or service. We found the staff attentive and well-mannered. We had the set menu and were very satisfied. Standout dishes were the Sea Urchin on Toast, Pork Belly & Duck confit."

  • "We had our first dinner at Aldea on a Monday evening at 6 PM. We had the Chef's Tasting menu and wine paring. With tax/tip, the bill came to a bit over $450. But, we both agreed that it was a wonderful and memorable meal and, while tres expensive, we thought it was worth it. Months later, we still talk about it. We sat at the counter looking into the kitchen so we could watch the action. We watched how each of the eight dishes made their respective way from prep station to prep station. Many of the dishes involved seafood and we saw our trout being open grilled, the octopus torched and the oysters opened. It was fascinating and engrossing. Each dish was a tiny masterpiece. We've walked by Aldea for years. Why'd we wait?"

  • "Sat at the kitchen bench as I was dining alone. Great view of a busy kitchen. Food was of a very high standard. I enjoyed the Portuguese wines too!"

  • "How is it possible I did not know about Aldea before? This Iberian gem of a restaurant, with an open kitchen, does everything possible to please! From the amuse bouches to the final custard tarts, compliments of the chef, it was sublime. I especially loved the serrano ham and baby squid appetizers, as well as the Arroz con pato main course. Service is most attentive and the ambience is warm and friendly. Just go!!"

  • " This is one of those rare restaurants at which you find an innovative menu, well prepared , delicious, unusual food, a charming, unintrusive and unpretentious staff. You're able to leisurely enjoy your evening in modern, elegant surroundings."

  • "I have been to Aldea in the past, and I found it superb. This time I found it just to be ok. Not sure if it was the choices we made but things were fine but nothing to shout about. Portions are definitely on the small side."

  • "The food at Aldea was as good as any michelin we have been to. However, we have become accustomed to a certain level of service to compliment the food that was sadly lacking on this occasion, particularly when a 20% service few is all but mandatory. The tables were also very close together so we were able to involuntarily overhear the graphic conversation of the couple next to us. Glad we experience the food, but as one off the list we won't be hurrying back."

  • "Taste and size of foods were much more moderate than restaurants in Newark. However, it is questionable why Michelin gave a star to this restaurant. Staffs and servers were very friendly and helpful, but elegance or class or sophistication which most of highly classified restaurants have were not sensed in combination with interior and atomosphere unfortunately. Please note that this critic doesn't mean this restaurant was bad. Truly enjoyed the food and service. "

  • "Loved the meal! You can get a $40 finely cooked entree or go all out with app and wine for ~100/head."

  • "We were very keen to dine in Aldea as it came highly recommended, but sadly, it was disappointing on every level. We started with a glass of Cava, but it was warm. Thereafter, the sommelier assisted us with a choice of white wine, but it was served at room temperature - when questioned, she advised it was served at cellar temperature - what nonsense, on that basis, one would have serious concerns about the wellbeing of the cellared red !! The hanger steak lacked flavour and was under cooked. The floor was understaffed and in all, the meal was well short of its very expensive mark - wouldn't return or recommend it to others. "

  • "There are many places to eat in Manhattan that offer good food at elevated prices. George Mendes offers great food at reasonable prices. My test for a great dinner is whether you can list the things you ate 3 days later. At Aldea that is very easy. Intimate, focused and memorable food is the Aldea trademark. $100 per person with tax, tip and spirits for a shared small plate, appetizer and entrée and a shared dessert. You can not eat this well for this price ANYWHERE in Manhattan. For a special treat ask to sit at the banquet overlooking the kitchen to understand how much thought goes into every plate and DO NOT miss the "little dreams" which will surpass any New Orleans Beignets you have ever eaten."

  • "We knew the food was going to be Great At Aldea. But what really surprised us was how much effort went into the design and layout of each course. The squid was excellent. The octopus was ok but could have been better. The Chatham cod just melts in your mouth and the sorbets were great too! "

  • "A few hits. A few misses. The little 'dreams' of dessert dipped in 3 sauces was wonderful. Octopus was tender and generous, but was not a great fan of the accompanying tamarind sauce as it overwhelmed delicate taste of octopus. Worst was the 'crispy faro' on the sardines, as they had the texture of hard stones and added no flavor at all. "
