A word from Alchemy
Alchemy is already a success for Michael and Debi Matassa, who owned the popular Fusion Grille in Fallston. While Michael is the executive chef, Debi is the sommelier and pastry chef. Alchemy's setting is polished and sophisticated but comfortable and welcoming. The menu offers various twists to traditional dishes and other creative fare. The restaurant is also serving Sunday brunch... the only champagne brunch on The Avenue. - Baltimore MagazineContinued

Diner Reviews
  • "Try the crab soup. Salty but the lump crab meat made it the highlight."

  • "Really excellent food, served beautifully. The crab bisque is to die for as are the Brussel sprouts. The only problem had been the parking situation, but now that they have valet parking, that is solved."

  • "I took my daughter in law for lunch and we had Two sandwiches and one ice tea and I dropped $34.00. Was it worth it? No. The sandwiches were fine and chips great, but for me, I find that too expensive for lunch."

  • "We went for $25 Tuesday special . It is the best deal in town. I had the delicious snapper beautifully prepared and the yummy pear salad followed by scrumptious carrot cake with a lemon cream cheese icing. Too much food . The place was packed. Everyone in our group was happy with their meals. Great placr"

  • "This is a nice little restaurant with excellent food. All the dishes we ordered - appetizers, salads, and entrees - were all noteworthy. The food is creative (e.g. sweet potatoes and corn in a corn husk), but not too crazy. They seem to have a great balance between creating new flavors while staying true to familiar tastes, as well. Rated 4 stars overall because the food was great and the menu seems to have lots of excellent options. The service was a little slow and the noise level high once it got crowded, but the excellent food overshadowed that, in my opinion. I will return often!"

  • "Hands down, the best food I've had in local restaurant in a very long time. Even the cocktails were imaginative and delicious. I was there for an 82nd bday dinner, and it was a bit loud, but even that didn't out a damper on the evening. Alchemy's chef rocks!"

  • "Good food, but nothing spectacular. Good service; attentive."

  • "Really, really good food with adorable waiter. What a find!"

  • "Even in the midst of HonFest, this restaurant didn't miss a beat. The chips are the best. The bloody mary is the most amazing start to any day with a huge lump of crabmeat and an olive!"

  • "As always another wonderful meal at Alchemy. Everything was fantastic."

  • "took friends for lunch, they really enjoyed! service great."

  • "Wonderful specials and yes, the crab bisque lived up to its reputation. It was everything I had heard about and more!"

  • "restaurants like Alchemy, who pride themselves in freshness, preparation and presentation, don't seem to be concerned about diners who have food allergies. I can usually manage the entree, but would love to have their wonderful coffee with my usual soy or almond milk. I don't think it would be too difficult to make that concession. Otherwise, I love the place and go often!"

  • "Alchemy is a home grown treasure. Michael and Debbie are the consummate hosts with interesting and delicious farm to table specials, beautiful plating, and elegant atmosphere. It is my "go to" place for en excellent meal."

  • "Everything was great from drinks to apps to the main course. There was only 3 of us. Groups larger than 6 might be a tight squeeze on the mail level. Street Parking was tight so we carpooled, but that's the only concern with going back."

  • "My husband who was a chef and I think this is one of the very best in Baltimore. Though it might not be where the hipsters go the food here surpasses many of those top rated hipster restaurants."

  • "This was our first time to Alchemy and we loved it."

  • "We weren't sure what to expect from Alchemy. Friends had positive things to say, but they undersold this gem. Everything we ordered was delicious but the House Smoked Fish Plate appetizer blew us away--hands down the best smoked fish I've ever had. The Crab Cassole was also a winner and our salads were great. The service couldn't have been better or more knowledgeable. All in all, a great dining experience."

  • "I'll be back. This was my first visit, and I took a colleague from out of town to Alchemy for lunch. He had the appropriately named Colossal Crab Cake sandwich and I had the soft shell BLT. FANTASTIC!! The crab was perfectly prepared and the bacon was thick. The service was good, too!"

  • "I had lunch at Alchemy with a friend last week and was disappointed. I had the Croque Madama and found it to be quite tasteless. Being from Belgium, I know what a Croque is supposed to taste like. It is supposed to be "croquant" not soggy and greasy. Too bad as I would love to find a good lunch place in Hampden."

  • "Our dinner was just fine, but nothing remarkable, considering how oversold the whole thing was. Ambience would be better after the sun goes down. There are a half dozen better restaurants on the same block, in fact, a taco and a margarita for $15 at holy frijoles would be a much better night."

  • "The ambiance is uncluttered and sophisticated, the food was very good. The luncheon salads were interesting combinations and delicious. It was a place where we could actually talk to each other without shouting. I'd definitely return."

  • "Not surprised that ALCHEMY is on every recent reviewer's list of best restaurants. FANTASTIC MEAL DEAL -- Tues night 3 courses for $25 + $5 wine small pours. We chose the House Pinot Noir that was spectacular for $32 bottle and three of us shared a bottle rather than did the small glass pours. We all loved our meals, and were pleasantly surprised that the portions were not downsized for this 'meal deal'. Beautiful displays of food with quality preparation. And, our waiter was the BEST -- he was friendly, helpful, attentive, but not at all pushy. So many choices on the menu that it was hard to decide. Eager to go back and try the other dishes we did not choose this time. Cozy place - loved our rear booth. "

  • "We went out on Mothers Day and was happy to be able to order from the regular brunch menu. The service and food was delicious and fast!"

  • "First time, but definitely not the last. Food, drinks and service were outstanding. Valet parking. Staff were very friendly and professional. "

  • "My girlfriend and I went here with our 9 month old the Saturday before Mother's Day. The food was very good, but I wasn't completely satisfied with my sandwich because the bread was hard as a rock. The drinks were fantastic. I'm just not a fan of hard breads. A warning for anyone with infants or toddlers; this is NOT a child-friendly restaurant. They only have boosters; no high chairs in the building. We'll go back again, but it won't be for a few years because our child will have to be of booster seat age. We got the crab cake sandwich (fantastic) and the pork tenderloin sandwich (pork was great, but the bread is too hard for my liking.)"

  • "We really enjoyed our meal - the food was excellent, the portions just what we wanted, and the plating was lovely. And it was possible to hear each other in conversation. We will return!"

  • "We loved it - the new items are spectacular - sweet potato appetizer, popovers in a basket, curried chicken, rice, and side veggies to die for. Thank you for this wonderful repast. "

  • "The good was great, the bad was very bad. Our server was lovely, helpful, and informative. We liked the Lamb-stuffed sweet potato, the Brussels sprouts, and the coconut-glazed salmon (although not the sides that accompanied it). The wine list was approachable and well-chosen. One entree arrived cold. The food was SO ill-conceived. The technique was obviously there (perfectly cooked meat/fish, etc.), but portion sizes were huge, proteins paired with disparate flavors, and the cuisine was generally unbalanced towards the heavy side...making the huge portions even more daunting. The place seemed to lack good management with clear vision. Ultimately, I don't think I'll be returning."

  • "The food was excellent but the waiter forgot one of the appetizers and the special Hendricks gin cucumber martini (very good!) took a long time to serve, way after the wine was delivered. It may have been that there were 7 people at the table but the waiter was not up to the service needed. The patron whose appetizer was forgotten was very irritated and refused even a late delivery of the appetizer (smoked fish plate). "

  • "We enjoyed our brunch this past Easter. It's a cute little converted row house. Not a lot of space but our party was a party of 2 so it was fine. There was a party of 4 nearby and they seemed like they had enough room. The service was great and so was the food. I would definitely recommend going if you're interested in simple good food. Oh and we were full for the rest of the day!"

  • "I had Easter brunch at Alchemy, and everyone in my party thought the food was great. A little extra attention from the wait staff is needed: played were handed to us instead of being placed on the table, coffee not refilled, butter too frozen to use. "

  • "Though it's a very small location I didn't feel like I crushed up with other diners like you find in some larger restaurants. Food was good, fast service, portions were right. Brian was our server and he was very nice"

  • "Food is terrific, desserts are outstanding! The restaurant is a little loud, depending on where you are sitting. However, it has a great energy, and this little neighborhood spot will not disappoint! "

  • "Food was okay- not worth the money at all. Wait staff not attentive. Beef short ribs were tender and artisan pear salad was decent."

  • "Outstanding food, service, drinks, and atmosphere. It was our first time there and it definitely won't be our last! "

  • "We left unhappy. When we arrived the table was not ready. We were told that half of our party could go to the bar, but not everyone because the bar was too small. The rest of us waited outside. We were offered drinks, by the hostess, while we waited. Four of us ordered a drinks and had to drink them in the small vestibule out front. We incorrectly assumed this was complimentary because of our wait. When our bill came we were charged 10 dollars each drink. We asked the hostess about this, but was told "I never said they were free." We asked to talk to the owner, but we were told that she was "busy working on a menu." It is hard to believe that the owner could not take two minutes to talk to patrons. We will not be back."
