A word from Alchemy Restaurant
Alchemy is a modern American cuisine restaurant located in the hip, up-and-coming neighborhood of South Park along the burgeoning 30th Street “Restaurant Row.” Executive Chef Ricardo Heredia has created an approachable and creative menu for dinner and brunch alike that draw on his childhood influences as well as techniques and flavors from various cultures around the world. The fundamental foundation of Alchemy’s food lies in the fresh, high-quality produce, poultry and meats delivered daily, much of which is purveyed locally. The restaurant has compiled an innovative wine list of over 100 different bottles and 22 wines by the glass. Our craft cocktail menu is classic in nature with a modern twist. The restaurant also serves up several unique culinary events including Wednesday evening’s Vegetarian Tasting Menu, Dinner With 6 Strangers, Suckling Pig Dinners and Silent Sunday, where Alchemy pays tribute to the traditional speakeasy with silent films and Prohibition-era cocktails.Continued

  • "I hadn't been back to Alchemy since it opened but was looking for a resturant which accepted reservations at the last minute in South Park. We were delighted with the service. food and cocktails. Moderately priced. We will go back"

  • "Ordered chicken and dumplings, duck boa and frites. Chix and dumplings were unremarkable--salt, but not much seasoning beyond that. Dumpling more of a flour mashed potato. The steam buns were hard, tough and dense. I like steam buns soft and fluffy. I understand they can be dense, but these were too dense to be enjoyable. Duck had a nice flavor--not to gamey or fatty. Not a fan of the curry ketchup for the frites. Overall, unremarkable dinner and will not likely return. Server was friendly, but served our bottle of wine in large pours rather than gradually. These weren't bar drinks, but a bottle--she literally poured it out in 2 pours or 3 pours--even after we told her it was warm and needed more chilling. Unremarkable. No need to return."

  • "My mom and I were in San Diego for Spring Break and I had seen Alchemy on a tv show, so we decided to try it out. It was our favorite restaurant all week! I had the bottomless strawberry basil bellini (AMAZING!) and my mom had a mimosa, which our waitress also made bottomless! My mom had the buttermilk waffles, and I had the ham/sausage/bacon frittata. Both tasted great, were very generous portions and were fairly priced. The ambience was fun (we loved the look of the restaurant, especially the books on the ceiling - very cool!) and all of the staff were super nice and friendly! We wish there was an Alchemy near us in CO, but it will definitely make our trips to Southern Cali even more special in the future - we will definitely be back! :)"

  • "In town for a conference. we wanted to get away from Gaslamp district. This place did not disappoint. Great apps and drinks. Eclectic entrees. Not too pricy. Worth the trip."

  • "My husband and I split the rib-eye and it was cooked and seasoned to perfection. We ordered several sides and had the hush-puppy appetizers, all excellent. Our sons had the quail, burger and fish plate. They all enjoyed their dishes. The menu was very eclectic running from simple to fancy. Presentation was beautiful and service was prompt even though they were very busy. I brought a cake and they were very kind to not charge a "cake-charge"."

  • "Knew we would be able to have a good place to catch up with a friend a couple of us had not seen for many years. Yes, the evening was a success. We enjoyed the atmosphere, and had good food also. Thanks."

  • "I really wanted to like this place, ambiance was great and the menu was interesting. Our cocktails were great but the food was inconsistent or spotty at best. I don't want to dismiss them, but I probably won't return. Duck buns was great but the chicken and dumplings a huge disappointment. They were served in a large bowl, with one chicken leg and two dumplings swimming in a bowl of gravy. Very unappealing--it would be different if this was a soup, with a soup or broth base, but this was basically a big bowl of gravy with a leg and two dumplings tossed in. Our server was very nice, but she was new, and wasn't able to answer questions about specific dishes or keep up. Not her fault--she tried but probably wasn't fully trained."

  • "We were able to be seated right away on a Saturday night. Waitress was very pleasant and patient. They didn't have a kids menu but were very accommodating for our youngest. I had the beef tamale and the fish tacos which were both delicious. Others had the quail and cocido. Only complaint was the noise level and the parking. Parking is on the street in a residential area and was a hunt to find a space."

  • "Tried this place last week. Hubbie's burger was dry my fish was overcooked. Service left a lot to be desired. Overall just not impressed."

  • "We were looking for a low key place with excellent food to unwind on a Saturday night during a conference in town--to get away from the waterfront/conference venue. This was perfect! Not too loud, but busy enough and relaxed. It was a nice mix of ages--not all young people, but not all staid old fogies either! The menu was small but had just enough variety to make it interesting. We ordered three small plates and one entree. All were delicious. The curry quail dish was outstanding. As were the duck bao. We drank local beers on tap, which were great! We are from out of town, but if we lived here we would make this a regular spot!"

  • "We ordered four to share and three were not particularly good. The green beans were green, but not tasty. The cauliflower had a tasteless white sauce. Even bacon did not redeem it. The quinoa hush puppies were overcooked. Kudos to the fourth appetizer. We really liked the pork tacos. The bread pudding dessert was great, by the way."

  • "Went there with a couple of girlfriends, one of few rainy Sundays in San Diego. Walked right in at 10am, within an hour, it was full. The menu is not large but you should be able to find a little something to munch on. I recommend the chicken and waffles but the Carnitas Chiliquiles were incredible! Don't miss the bacon bloody Mary."

  • "The oysters we not up to freshest standards plus the very plain lemon wedge and horseradish presentation lacked the usual condiments many oyster love with them - small crackers, mignonette and cocktail sauce which usually accompanies them. The Norweigan Roll was OK but the flavor were rather in-distinctive so they are not something I would re-order."

  • "Restaurant looks great! Ambiance is cool! Was tempted by online search that vegan dishes was the norm. But found out that they are an after-thought. Taking out the meat from dishes is not vegan! I do like the idea of the monthly vegan exploration of real vegan dishes...please make them plentiful on the full menu...PLEASE!!!"

  • "I first decided to go to this restaurant because my Chef recommended it to me. So I decided to make it a valentines dinner date with my boyfriend. Once I arrived my table was already prepared because of the reservations I made on OpenTable. For Valentines Day there was a prix fixe menu. $65 a person for a four course meal. I believe it wasn't entirely worth the 65 dollars, but that doesn't mean it wasn't good. The food was unique on the flavor. I would suggest going to the restaurant on a regular day to check out their daily menu."

  • "Despite our party being one of three tables in the restaurant, our mediocre food arrived 45 min after ordering. A brunch order became a lunch meal because it took so long."

  • "Went to Alchemy on Valentines day and had a wonderful experience. A prix fixe menu was the only offering of the night with some outstanding choices available for us to try. Everything was delicious especially the duck, but a little under seasoned. The 4-course meal didn't seem like it was going to be enough but ended up leaving us completely stuffed! The creativity and freshness of the food make me want to go back to try their regular menu. Hopefully we'll be back soon."

  • "We were one of a few tables for brunch, the restaurant was mostly empty. We were greeted by three staff members as we sat down. However, no one came over to our table after we sat down to offer a menu or drinks. I had to eventually get up and ask the bartender for a menu. Quite strange as the place was not crowded and staff saw us walk to our table. When someone finally came to take our order they had an attitude, as if we disturbed them somehow by requesting service. Food and drinks were both good, though I would not return due to the poor service."

  • "Alchemy has an eclectic mix of food options ranging from ceviche to butter buiscuits, both of which are absolutely delicious. There food did not leave me wanting. However, being that this restaurant is in San Diego, their beer selection left me unimpressed. The beer they offered was local (always good) but they only have about 5 options, and none seemed overly thrilling. Another plus of Alchemy is that they take reservations, unlike other restaurants in the area. Definitely go to Alchemy for the food, but stop at Hamilton's if you're looking for something delicious to quench your thirst."

  • "I went for Valentine's Day, which had a special menu, so the food we ate probably isn't standard fair, but I would expect the quality to be consistent. Also, I think they change their menu fairly regularly. Amazing food, a 4 course meal and every course a treat. The ambiance is nice, its somewhat loud (though that may vary depending on the crowd) but the dim lighting lends some intimacy. It has a rustic, organic atmosphere that reflects the food well. They have a short but well selected beer & wine list. This a gem of a restaurant in a gem of a neighborhood."

  • "We were able to score a last minute invitation on Saturday night. My husband's only request was that he wanted a rib eye steak. Friendly service but slow( they were busy), charming environment. The fried pickles and green cauliflower were delicious. I had the fish special and found it to be wonderful. Unfortunately, my husband's teak was full of gristle, chewy and tough. As we looked around, we noticed a lot of 1/2 eaten steaks so unfortunately, it seems the restaurant just got a bad batch. We will try it again despite the steak. l"

  • "I took my sister who was visiting from NYC to Alchemy based on a recommendation from a friend. We shared the hushpuppies, grain salad, and vegetarian curry (also offered with Quail) and finished with the blueberry bread pudding. Each dish was delicious, and nicely plated. I had a good local ale, and she had one of the house cocktails that she really enjoyed. The service was excellent, with the right amount of attentiveness. She has high standards since she dines in NYC frequently, and she was very happy with Alchemy. Overall a great choice."
