  • "We started with the foie gras (politically incorrect as it is) - very smooth, almost too smooth, very small portion, overwhelmed by the intense berry preserve accompaniment. Also had the soup du jour, a cold tomato bisque that was good. Mains were rack of lamb which was stuffed, a bit muddled and overcooked, and the flank steak with risotto that was probably the best dish. Finished with the apple tart, too much crust vs. filling, and way too sweet and rich. Wine list is good. Overall this was not a bad meal at all but for the money and given the stellar reviews I'd expected more."

  • "It had been several years since we had dined at the Winchester Inn, but Alchemy has received some great reviews, so we decided to try. The good press was highly justified. The meal was beautiful, delicious, inventive, and featured multiple flavors and textures that harmonized so well. We ordered the Dungeness crab salad and the braised short ribs. It was quite warm in the restaurant -- the air conditioning not quite up to such a hot day."

The food, well let's just say after the meal was finished, and we lingered over a terrific dessert, we decided this IS our favorite place to dine in Ashland.   • "Once again had a 5 star experience. The Foie Gras was Excelkent with a lovely Sauterne. The stuffed endive with rogue creamery blue cheese was delicious. My Duck entree was cooked perfect and tasted incredible. Our chocolate dessert that we shared was a perfect ending to an excellent meal."

  • "Everything we ordered was fantastic. We were told that the filet mignon is their specialty, and it was truly special, as were the root vegies and Jerusalem artichoke mashers. The goat cheese gnocchi with wild mushrooms appetizer was a creative masterpiece! This is a rare occurrence for us. The service was great. We had a couple of special requests for them that were carried out seamlessly. We will be back!"

  • "We ordered duck breast & scalloops. We asked our server for a wine suggestion that would be appropriate & the response was "oh something in the middle". This was totally unsatisfactory for a restaurant that prides itself on its award winning 25 page wine list. She did not offer any other help even a sommelier. The butter lettuce salad was served on a warm plate & was wilted. The entrees were presented with style but lacked the flavor one would expect from the menu description. In addition, scallops were cold & duck was less than tender."

  • "the food is great and innovative. I had a boneless short rib that was glazed and perfect. Not fatty as some short ribs are. Tender - yummy. It was served with a combination of Yukon gold potatoes and carrots, all mixed together like mashed potatoes. Tasty and the carrot color went well with the very dark short rib. this is a small restaurant, it is quiet and you can TALK without shouting. We wet there for our anniversary dinner and were not disappointing."

  • "We wanted to try a new restaurant while in Ashland for the Festival. We had read good things about Alchemy so decided on our evening off to come here. It was perfect. The pace was just right. The specialty drinks were fun. The food delicious. I had the scallops and my husband had the filet. The scallops were prepared 3 different ways and each one created an explosion of flavors in my mouth."

  • "While this restaurant definitely isn't a cheap place to eat, the quality is so high I am surprised that the dinners aren't $50 per person! It was a great place to celebrate and the staff was warm and welcoming. Also, when I had questions about dietary issues (I have Celiac Disease and therefore need to eat gluten free), the staff was very knowledgeable and when they didn't know they went and checked with the chef. Awesome! I would definitely come back again in a future trip to Ashland."

  • "Both our meals were barely warm when they arrived at the table. Neither my scallops nor my bf's salmon impressed. Odd flavor combinations such as whole (pitted) calamata olives with the salmon or the big square of cold tomato under one of my scallops just didn't make sense or do anything to complement the seafood. Enjoyed the option to builds wine flight and the setting was very nice."

The soup of the day was described as a bisque by our server but the server at the next table said it was a chowder - it was neither - just a thick corn soup that was over-salted. While my dining companion's scallops were wonderful, my salmon was dry - a terrible thing to do to a beautiful piece of alaska king salmon!"

  • "While the appetizer - gnocchi with short-ribs - was excellent, everything else - salad, cod and rib eye - were very ordinary. Worse was the service. We had a personable waitress but heard lots of excuses about the computer systems being down, and had what seemed like amateurish service all around. We expected more from an Ashland landmark."

  • "My favorite treat in Ashland is eating here! Tried a new aged steak(at waitress recommendation) with an egg, truffle, and cheese on top, was trepidacious, but it was outstanding! There was this chocolate desert that was like a choc. sponge with chocolate moose rolled in a log all covered with a layer of hardened dark chocolate (looked like a can of chocolate). It blew my mind! Absolutely everything at this place is special! Breakfast was treat after treat starting with really good coffee, punctuated with a knock your socks off french toast with honey and figs, choice of breakfast meat on the side! This is a very special place."

  • "I ordered the stuffed quail and it arrived looking pretty pale. The inside stuffing, rabbit sausage was quite raw and I had to send it back. It came back better, but still a little underdone on the innermost part. My husband said his duck was also a little underdone. The chocolate cake dessert was very dry, tasted more like a hostess HoHo than anything I would expect from a fine dining restaurant. They did comp the dessert due to the quail problem, but shouldn't they have comped the quail instead?"

Many people like this kind of noise, but it's not our thing. We enjoyed our food, but we'll probably try something else next time we're in town."

  • "Located in charming Victorian B&B "Winchester Inn". Loved the decor & romantic ambience. The fig & sausage stuffed quail was delicious. The special was brined lamb on risotto. NOT SO GOOD!!! I should have realized there wud be a problem when they did not ask me how I'd like it cooked. it came med well, overcooked, tough and didn't taste like lamb at all. Everything else was great. The shallot tarragon dressing on the salad was yummy. Apple tart and chocolate mouse cake very good. Service was good. Adjacent table ordered the mini Wellington appetizer which came as 2 large bite sized Wellington's. next time I will have that with the salad and dessert. We sat inside but they have a charming patio. Perfect place for High Tea."

  • "Dinner here before a show at Shakespeare festival. Nice atmosphere, very good service. Seem to be known for their special cocktails, however the one we tried, Lagoon, a gin drink was decidedly week, should have had my usual Martini. The cold foie gras was a treat but a very small portion. The stuffed Quail excellent. The trio of Scallops was interesting and well done although we much preferred only one of the sauces. Nice wine list and wines by the glass."

  • "We had a large party for my graduation but they were very accommodating and friendly. We even had my 8 year old nephew there and he was able to get a grilled cheese before we ordered to help him stay on good behavior. The food was elegant, unique and most importantly delicious. The short ribs and filet mignon were some of the best I've tasted. It's a great place for a date or special occasion because you will end up spendinga bot of money but it is worth it."

  • "We had a nice pre theater dinner with good service. Drink menu has variations on old stand bus as well as the standards. There are a number of wines by the glass. Our appetizers included gnocchi with pork belly and a fresh green salad, both were good. We had braised beef ribs and seared salmon. Both were very well prepared. The citrus for the salmon was in the polenta, a nice surprise when you ate a little of both together."

However, my friend has the scallops and had an upset tummy after we left and I had the salmon and also experienced an upset tummy later on. However, everything we ate, was very good, so don't know why we had upset tummies. Dessert was very good also - cherry creme brunet and apple tart"

  • "They had a special mushroom soup with local mushrooms--outstandingly delicious! The duck was wonderful and the black cod was superbly prepared. Drew helped us select a fantastic Winderlea Pinot Noir from his wine selection. My question was which of the 4 vintages he had on the menu worked best with our entrees and was tasting the best right now. He came up with a winner--the '07 Winderlea. With fantastic food and formidable wine, you cannot go wrong!"

  • "Welcoming restaurant that resides in an inn that is a few steps from the OSF and Main Street. The restaurant is homey and comfortable. The service was eager to please and friendly. The bbq sport ribs were very good. A nice option for dining close to the theatre."

  • "Most of the meal was delightful, but the overall experience was inconsistent. The waitstaff was excellent. The foie gras was hard, cold, crumbly and bland. The black cod was perfect, as were the filet mignon and the duck. The cocktails were a little odd, but acceptable. Wine list is commendable. The dining room is very cluttered with tables and HOT - no circulation. It might be perfect for fans of Arsenic and Old Lace."

  • "The little food touches were what one expects from a well reviewed restaurant, and items like the pureed carrots on the short ribs plate were excellent. My only complaint was that the black cod I was served was so small it looked like an appetizer. But, truly, everything else was fine; it just wasn't special enough to want us to go back."

  • "Not our first time here, we were looking forward to returning. Alchemy did not live up to expectation. Alchemy has an extensive by-the-(expensive)-bottle wine list, but the offerings by-the-glass are neither numerous nor particularly desirable. For the second year in a row we asked for two glasses and were told the last pour of our wine of choice had just been made. No adjustment was offered. Could it be they are hoping to lure us into buying a whole bottle? The couple at the adjacent table who arrived after us were likewise treated. Many of the entrees were to my mind unimaginatively larded with additions of crispy bacon. My gnocchi was dry, portions were small. Ashalnd has many so many fine restaurants, we won't return. "
