Diner Reviews
  • "First time at this restaurant. I had the enchilada suiza, loved it! Everyone in our party tried something different, mixed reviews but still on the positive side."

  • "Sat outside and was blasted by music, service was great but the price for 4 people was almost $100 and the food didn't taste that great, not at all."
    Dined on 4/10/2014
  • "Food was terrific. If you want your guac to be spicy, you can ask for the highest level, BUT, also ask for the extra spicy that they don't mix into it and it comes on its own plate. Very good, it was a 2014 Salt Lake Magazine winner for best new restaurant and best Mexican spot and it was really good. It is 1/2 block down from the SLC Marriott on State St."

  • "After reading about Alamexo in Salt Lake Magazine, we were awaiting the right occasion to try the restaurant. We took a risk taking our two children (9 year old twins) not knowing exactly how spicy or "kid friendly" the food would be. Our kids are very adventurous, so the worry was small. Well, after seeing my twins devour a batch of fresh guacamole and then proceed to consume duck tacos, chicken tacos, and tres leches cake, our concerns were muted. The place is awesome. Anyone who loves good Mexican-style food with a bit of flare will love Alamexo. And, if you go, do try the Vida Rita for your beverage--truly enjoyable. Great place."

  • "We went early on a weekday and the food and service was outstanding!! I can't wait to eat here again!"

  • "I happened to pick up SL Mag which said this Alemexo is a must try restaurant. My wife and I are always game to try new places. This restaurant is fit for any foodie. We started off with guac made tableside (which was a tough choice since the ceviche looked amazing) then I had the beef short enchiladas. They were amazing. I wish the salsa was better. It was missing something special. The only issue we had was because of the time of day we went the sun was shining right in my wife's eyes. I had to switch seats with her and the table next to us had to move. It can easily be solved with some shades! I recommend this place and I have told a lot of our friends about this unknown restaurant. Derrick"

  • "Fourth time at Alamexo and the food was great again, especially the tableside guac. Avoid the table by the kitchen entrance, unless you like hearing the staff say "corner" every 15 seconds!"

  • "My wife and I enjoy looking for good food. When we saw Alamexo won salt lake city's 2014 best Mexican restaurant we booked our table for the next weekend. Location is amazing but the food was way over-priced and nothing special. I'm pretty sure the suiza enchiladas had a caned green Chili's sauce. For two of us to eat this unoriginal food cost $60 (without any drinks). I'm okay paying that much if the food is something we enjoy, but not for this meal. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. Totally disappointing best describes our experience at Alamexo."

  • "We went for a late lunch. Service was attentive. Had the guacamole made tableside... was a little bland...probably should have asked her to add more jalapeno and cilantro...asked for some lemon wedges to perk it up. Food presentation was nice and tasty, but far from the best Mexican we've experienced. While pleasant, would probably not go again. And, glad we didn't have my Mexican husband with us!"

  • "The food at this newish restaurant is really terrific, imaginative but not overdone. Some people will find it too expensive for Mexican food, but there really is a lot going on in the dishes, a true cuisine. The service is good, though a little casual for the price point. We really felt we wanted to go back and try several more items on the menu, especially the fish."

  • "The food was soooo great! The guacamole made table-side is crave-worthy! I had the carne asada and the meat was so tender and juicy! Will most definitely be going there again soon!"

  • "Food was very good quality, good taste, enjoyable atmosphere. I would like to see a little more quantity with the guacamole for the price paid (my only complaint)."

  • "The food was very good, and we had a little mishap my meal and everybody was so nice and friendly and very quick."
    Dined on 3/1/2014
  • "Way too expensive for food that is just not that good. $9 for a bowl of guacamole--I mashed avocado with not enough salt. Fish has tortilla crust that was soggy and 2 sauces, both of which tasted like smashed tortilla chips. Mojito was thankfully delicious but couldn't redeem the food."

  • "I was excited to try a higher end Mexican place. The decor was lovely, the service lousy, and the food just so-so. Our waiter promised to keep an eye on us but did a very poor job. Three of us at the table and not one of us finished our entree's or appetizer, he did not inquire if we were satisfied. Disappointing for the price, which is expensive. Unfortunately Salt Lake still awaits a good high end Mexican Cantina."

  • "Red wine was served very hot and nothing to cool other than changing the taste and put ice in our glass. Our main plate was served before we finished our appetysers. The waitress moved our plates to make room."

  • "Very happy with this place. The table side guacamole is not worth $11 for 1 avocado. We will go back, looking forward to summer to sit on the patio."

  • "Food was excellent. The flavors of the different sauces was really special."

  • "heard great reviews and really looked forward to this evening with my girlfriend. sadly the service was mediocre, the prices too high and the food just good enough. i wouldn't recommend this restaurant - $11 guacamole that had only one avocado! red iguana, and even blue iguana are a better go-to for mexican in SLC."

  • "It's no secret that Salt Lake needs more places where you can get "foodie fit" Mexican fare. Alamexo provides a worthy alternative to Frida's where you can have great food in a comfortable, upscale atmosphere. The service, food and atmosphere are excellent. The downtown location is great and I can't wait to make use of the outdoor seating."

  • "Alamexo is new and I have eaten here a bunch. It is always great and you will not be disappointed. The Chef presentations are like nothing you see in Utah Mexican food. I feel like I step I to Santa Fe, when I eat here."

  • "The scene this evening was even more vibrant than usual, something to do with Sundance and teh Outdoor Retailers I presume. First things first - you have to have the Guacamole made at the table - don't even think about not doing so. The fish dishes are always worth a try, tonight my friend had the Tacos Pescado and was impressed with the quality and freshness of the halibut. I had the Camarones y Chipotle Enchiladas, they were really outstanding, tasty with the just the right amount of heat. My wife had the Budin, which was good as always, though it would be nice to see another vegetarian alternative. After the Guac and a double helping of chips and salsa we had no room for dessert but still managed to enjoy the complimentary churros."

  • "For the price, this upscale mexican restaurant was just okay. The table side guacamole was boring and had no kick (even though we said we like it spicy). The entrees were (Chicken Suiza) was pretty non-memorable. If the prices were lower I would have a different review, but $12 guacamole, I expect more. I did get Root 1 cabernet from Chile - that and the on the house churros at the end were the highlights."

  • "This place converted to Mexican in Oct last year - a shift reflecting the chef's training. Oh Wow! The food is absolutely off the charts. It is Mexican but finely prepared, with lots of Veracruz influence. The table side guacamole and the queso fundido were our starters and both were amazing - departing from the familiar fare with better ingredients and awesome flavors. For dinner we had Pescado Veracruzano, Enchiladas Suiza and Mole Poblano - we had to get busy eating our own dishes and trying to eat each other's dishes because all three were top rate, delicious and packed with excellent flavoring. We will go return. Thank you to the management for making this switch and providing such an excellent Mexican dining option in SLC."

  • "The portions were too small for the price. The table side guacamole was fresh but bland, not enough salt and no garlic or lime juice. The same can be said about the enchiladas. I ordered the daily special which consisted of pork and shrimp with what sounded like a spicy sauce. It was bland, under seasoned, the shrimp were tiny, and I bit down on a large chunk of cartilage which ruined my palate for the remainder of the meal. Also, the sides (rice and beans) came in small containers with tiny portions. The salsa served with the chips and guacamole was also very good. At the end of the meal the complimentary chips with cinnamon sugar with honey was delicious. I was disappointed because the salsa and sides were better than the main course."

  • "Alamexo is something that Utah really needs. It is a great Mexican restaurant and is high quality. This is not your normal rice and beans place, the chef really takes his time and you can tell. We have been twice and amazed both times."

  • "Hmmmm--Duck taco appetizer was delicious! Actually it was all delicious. The roasted, toasty salsa obviously made fresh. Made to order guacamole at the table looked fun although we stuck to appetizers and entrees. I love that they serve rice and beans on the side to share -- and they were not after thoughts but well prepared with traditional flavors. If you're a fan of Rick Bayless-type Mexican, this is your place. Service was attentive and knowledgeable. Restaurant handled groups, couples and families just fine. Will definitely be back!"

  • "finally, a great Mexican restaurant in downtown! The menu is wonderful - great selection of unique preparations. Guacamole prepared tableside was very tasty, the salsa was yummy, and the chips perfect. Every entree we tried was delicious. The atmosphere is nice, the wait staff congenial and knowledgeable. Great dining experience!"
