We all thought our food was ok.
Not great. But the biggest issue was the acoustics. So loud! They would do well to put curtains or some fabric somewhere to absorb some of the noise. "

I thought the food was overall
great. I went here for the first time a few weeks back with a friend who just moved to the city, and then again when two of my friends visited I had to go back. Two of our three dishes really nailed it; the short ribs were incredible while my risotto was bland. Our waiter was attentive and friendly. I will definitely be back with more friends!"

They are innovative, open to any
and all suggestions and are masters of knowing how to make their guests feel comfortable. Food and service are wonderful, and you are almost always sent a special treat from the Chef, who continues to change, add, and surprise with his lovely menu. They are a perfect fit for our beautiful neighborhood."

So good, I return every Friday for
dinner with my mother and relatives."

In picking Ala Romana we were
looking for great food, wine and a social environment that was not too loud so my friends and I could catch up!! This hit them all. The gnocchi melts in your mouth, the homemade chili oil was just the right level of spice and the service was knowledgable and friendly!!!"

Allegro Romano is one of my
favorite restaurants in SFO. But I have avoided coming there due to difficulty of parking and getting a reservation. Parking at Ala Romano is far more difficult than at Allegro Romano, and the food is pretty awful. The pasta was too salty and the pork chop very ordinary. The staff friendliness and professionalism was incredible. But given the many better choices for Italian in SFO and the fact that parking is downright annoying, I don't think this restaurant will pull through. I will go back to Allegro Romano, but only if I don't have to drive."

I can't blame the place for being
in such a hard-to-park neighborhood, but it would've been nice if they had valet because it took us forty minutes to find a spot several blocks away. There were several missteps by the servers, and it was weird that so many different ones came to our table. I considered it a sign of disorganization. But it wasn't just that. There was forgotten food orders, someone who listened to me ask a question and mumbled something and walked away, one who ran into my elbow as she tried to walk past, and an overall careless tone. I could've forgiven all of the above if the food was tasty, but it was mediocre. I don't know how they managed to mess up polenta but they did. I would skip this restaurant."

A neighborhood gem! Ala Romana is
the kind of restaurant that makes me fall in love all over again with dining experiences in San Francisco. While it is hard to find a bad meal in San Francisco (uless you're a tourist in North Beach!) Ala Romana is a reminder that some of the greatest meals don't need to cost a fortune or feel pretentious. The neighborhood charm and friendly service were only surpassed by the comforting, well prepared food. Excellent pastas, pizza and meats. Welcome to the neighborhood Ala Romana!"

There were 4 of us on a rainy
Sunday evening around 8 and the restaurant was not busy so the noise level was low. I say this because I'm sure when it is full it must be pretty noisy as other people have mentioned. All the dishes we had were delicious (puntarelle salad, artichokes, lamb chops, ribolllita, squid pasta, panna cotta) I didn't try my friend;s Margartia pizza. The wine list is pretty standard fare and not very impressive. It's decent, but if you are a wine person you won't be impressed especially living where we do and the sophistication of many restaurant's wine lists in the bay area. On the other hand, you get a very generous pour for a decent price. It's a great neighborhood place, especially if you don't have to find parking."

I hosted a special event for 16
and everyone raved about the food and service. Chris, the head waiter, called me the day before and we worked on a special 6 course menu that was then printed for everyone, wonderful choices, family style until the main course. Wow! He even arranged to park my wife's car as she arrived in the rain at a neighbor's home. What a night!"

Perhaps, the review in the Sunday
Chronicle has put extra pressure on the kitchen and staff. It seemed that everything was hurried and not quite given the time and thought in preparation of the food. The staff seem to be hurrying too much. We will give it another try sometime and hopefully time will help. The menu is looks very promising and delicious but missed on final product."

The squid ink pasta was quite
delightful, but the rest of the food was just so-so, and the wine list (a one pager with wines you could purchase at Safeway) was inexcusable for an Italian restaurant in SF."

Enjoyed the ambiance especially...
nicely designed restaurant and lovely new addition to the neighborhood. Chicory salad and squid ink tonatelli were delicious dishes. Service staff is gracious and will get their rhythm with a bit more experience. We'll be back!"

I went in a group of 4 for a
friend's birthday dinner and we had an excellent time. The restaurant is on the smaller side, but it seems like they can accommodate larger groups if you call ahead. I would definitely recommend making a reservation because the place was completely full. The food was delicious and extremely well priced for what you get. Our table split the prosciutto/burrata appetizer, and I think it's the best burrata I have had outside of Italy. I had the pork chop with parmesan polenta as my main course and highly recommend it. All and all, an excellent evening. The restaurant is dimly lit, which would make it perfect for a romantic date night."

Great pizza, delicious flavors,
unique menu, friendly staff."

This little spot was a great find
on a recent long weekend visit to SF. We shared 3 plates: salad, pasta, meat and a nice bottle of reasonably priced wine ($45) - picked after being offered tastes from the by the glass list. Service was gracious and friendly. No snubs for sharing and coursing our food. Salad was a nice mix of sweet and savory with good quality parm. cheese. Rabbit pasta was al dente - the meat was very flavorful. Pork chop was generous, nicely paired with polenta - all full of flavor."
Dined on 1/19/2014
pizza was delicious - so was the
burrata and the salad. it's slightly cramped seating because the restaurant is so small. also distracting, we had several different people taking out wine order - from the server to two other people - it was a bit distracting and disorienting. service started out not so hot, but got better throughout the evening. it's casual and not pretentious, which is great. restaurant was good but it wasn't a standout , in my view. I won't be going back there in a hurry - there are so many other restaurants in the general area that are just as good with a better price point."
Dined on 1/19/2014
Had the puntarelle salad (OK, a
little bland), nettle and ricotta gnocchi with guinea hen sugo and the pasta with rabbit - both were very good. The service was attentive but not overbearing. Small place which makes it a bit on the noisy side."

Ate here for the 2nd time on
Saturday night. LOVE this place! Food was beautiful - I had the Flank Steak with Salsa Verde .. perfectly cooked, wonderful sauce - My boyfriend had the Lamb Chop and Sausage ... incredible flavor .. we were in heaven! We will be back!!"

Really nice ambience, perfect
noise level for a good conversation. Food is good in general, pasta 'al dente' and tasty. Pizza is below average, considering san francisco standards, so go for something else. very good desserts."

We came here for the Christmas Eve
Eve dinner of just our family of four before we hit the extended families on the 24th and 25th. The staff at Ala Romana were so welcoming and the service was very attentive. Most importantly the food was fabulous. My husband had a lamb chop dish, me the squid ink pasta, and each of my girls had a pasta dish. We split salads before hand and had roasted olives with prosecco (fab combo) for starters. All was wonderful. Really a nice, comforting, neighborhood place. Casually sophisticated. Would definitely come here again. Parking is hard and street only so pray to the parking gods."

Six of us dined here New Year's
week. The restaurant was full. Reservation honored immediately. Staff very attentive. The pastas are creative, served al dente and delicious. Salads are generous (two can share). Reasonable prices with great food--a perfect combination. Will now be hard to choose between Allegro Romano and this new venture."
Dined on 12/30/2013
The food was delicious, but we
didn't like the wine list. The wines were very expensive, by the glass, and we did not like the selection. Plenty of chianti and sangiovese, but those aren't our favorites."

Great neighborhood restaurant…
excellent food, great service."
Dined on 12/23/2013
I was hopeful after reading all
the good reviews, but the fact of the matter is, they are a young establishment and the inexperience showed. Our food took a LONG time. The server was nice enough but not that knowledgeable about their wine selection. And if you didn't know, it's been and wine only. This has a tendency to annoy me. This place had potential, but I'll be waiting a while to come back (if I ever do) because they still have some growing up to do."

Ala Romano is just what the Nob
Hill/Russian Hill neighborhood needed -- a casual, uptempo eatery filled with happy people enjoying excellent, unpretentious food. Recently added pizza Margherita is spot on, with thin crust crunchy at the edges, rich and fresh tomato sauce, and hearty cheese --just one example of many well thought out dishes ranging from pastas to pork chops and fish. The staff was welcoming and efficient, from door to table and throughout the meal. The moderate prices capped off a thoroughly enjoyable evening."

Decent food. Good for the
neighborhood. Way to dark! I like dark restaurants with ambiance but something about this place was so dark it was hard to see anything."
Dined on 12/17/2013
This is a new place. Keeping this
in mind, several of our dishes needed more focus and flavor. The tuna carpaccio was bland and the olive oil cake was mushy and lacked olive oil taste. Flavor levels need to come up."
Dined on 12/16/2013
Food was well done, service was
very attentive, perhaps too much so with overly aggressive water refilling, noise level was extremely high on a Monday night, hard to have a conversation."
Dined on 12/16/2013
The pork chop was tasty as was the
risotto. The whole artichoke was interesting with a nice heart although the few remaining leaves were strangely crisp for this dish. The wine list included several credible reds beginning at $30, a welcome difference from other places that are less generous. We will have to return to pass judgement further."

Ala Romana is a welcome addition
to the Nob Hill neighborhood. Vibrant Roman bistro style dining. The food was excellent."
Dined on 12/9/2013
For years it has been difficult to
find a restaurant of this quality and price in our neighborhood, Nob Hill. Now we have a super place in walking distance both for ourselves and to take guests. Pasta is the best. Menu varies so we can go often."

Recently my date and I dined at
Ala Romana. The food was perfect, really very special and one of the best meals I have had in San Francisco in a while. Loved the artichoke ... wonderful and also had the Mint Fettucine with Lamb Ragu which was absolutely perfect. Our server was lovely and the ambience is modern and unique but also comfortable and friendly. Highly recommended."
