Diner Reviews
  • "Besides great food, great presentation, and great service, the restaurant was void of the noises that restaurants produce. Very quiet."

  • "From my being able to practice my fledgling Italian with the Napolitan bartender to the fabulous dish of homemade pappardelle with mushrooms, this was a sparkling Italian lunch. I can't wait to return."

  • "This is my new favorite business lunch spot -- the sound level allows conversation, the food is excellent and the service is gracious and accommodating. I've already scheduled a second lunch there in less than a week."

  • "Attentive, staff. Very smiley. Impeccable, crazy fresh, ingredient-driven food. All that you would expect of the best Italian cuisine. Simultaneously fine and comforting. Plan to share this place with all of the people that I love."

  • "Delicious food! Excellent Ambiance. Would be great if waiter/waitress was faster, but it was a busy night, so no harm there. Excellent hostess!"

  • "Waiter was rude and rushed us through. Food was very average. It was much better the last time I went there two years ago. Would not go again."

  • "Great italian food with a nice flair. We had the lamb shank and steak filet and they were excellent, I couldn't finish the lamb. The calamari appetizer was a bit small for $12 but was very good. The dessert was a bit pricey but very good for $9. Very good service, friendly staff. Nice atmosphere for a down underground place."

  • "As always, I love going to Al Tiramisu. While this was a business meeting and a quick dinner.....the food (grilled octopus appetizer and a chestnut tortelloni with brown butter and sage), the service and the wine were wonderful. Luigi is always present with his smile and enthusiasm....my favorite restaurant in DC"

  • "When the less expensive wine was ordered, the host's immediate suggestion was that we instead "move up" to a better wine. When we declined he remarked that our requested wine wasn't available. He then brought an unlisted substitute "for the same price" as the originally-ordered wine. Our appetizers were delivered within three minutes of placing our orders, quite chilled and tasteless, suggesting that they had been prepared and refrigerated well in advance. The fusilli with braised lamb sauce, while tasty, was somewhat dry and over-cooked. The background ethnic music (more middle-east than Italian) was overly loud. Desert was delicious. Service is attentive. Ala carte menu is pricey for value No return visit likely."

  • "Tiramisu is is one of DCs little gems. The moment you step in, you are greeted with old world Italian courtesy. the restaurant with its white linen and sparkling crystal is cozy (there is a working fireplace.) The menu is small but all the dishes are excellent. I had the mushroom pasta and it melted in my mouth. My companion had the salmon with orange sauce and thought it was perfect. The waiter was knowledgeable about the wines and suggested one that paired well with the food--and didn't break the bank! I will go back when I am again in DC."

  • "Tight seating; you will hear all neighbors' conversations. Delicious but super fatty food. Wine too expensive. A bit rushed even though we were not slow in leaving. The restaurant clearly had another table behind us ready to be seated."

  • "We were staying at the Dupont Hotel and wanted a place close by for a simple lunch. I'd eaten at Al Tiramisu once before 5-10 years ago and remembered it fondly, so we decided to try it. We were greeted with a hearty "Bon giorno", and it got better from there. A quiet table for two along one wall, simple green salads, gnocchi with a light tomato mozarella cream, papardelle with mushrooms and a few herbs, and glasses of chianti. It was a very, very pleasant lunch. The pasta was the star, not the sauce, and it had a wonderful flavor. If you're looking for innovative, modern Italian cooking, this won't be your place. But if you're looking for simple flavorful Italian in an intimate setting and friendly service, you won't be disappointed."

  • "Good Italian restaurant. Calamari came as breaded steaks on toothpicks instead of the usual fried rings and tentacles. It was good though. Veal pasta was the best main course ordered. Duck in orange sauce was good but not amazing. Linguine with clams was what it claimed to be. I give the restaurant props for not skimping on the clams. However, the portion size of the duck and veal pasta were disappointing, especially considering both were in the $20-$25 range. Chocolate salami desert was interesting. Good if you like rich chocolate deserts. The vanilla gelato that accompanied it was exceptional. The tiramisu was decent, but I am not a huge tiramisu fan in general."

  • "Oh, my, what a lovely experience we had. Luigi's food is perfection ... so authentic, warming, delicious, beautiful. The service was spot-on: friendly and good-humored, but not at all intrusive. We cannot wait to go back. Had crab tortelloni with lobster sauce; husband had the butternut squash ravioli - both of us had the arugula salad, like spring itself. The tiramisu, of course, is a must for dessert. This is what romantic dining is all about."

  • "Overall the food was decent, but not nearly as good as their prices might justify. With the a la carte menu, it's much easier to ring up a large tab than you might expect. We chose this restaurant as a less expensive alternative to some other local, highly rated, price-fixed establishments. Once all was said and done, we spent much more here ($280 for 2 people)than we would have elsewhere where the food is notably better. Another frustrating aspect (which has been noted elsewhere) is that they do not mention the prices of their specials, which, since we knew enough to ask, turned out to be quite a bit higher than the rest of the fare on the menu. This must be intentional on their part. The wine they suggested ($50) wasn't very good either."

  • "The food was delicious and service was wonderful. It's a small restaurant and so the tables are really close to each other. I highly recommend going!"

  • "Cozy. Food was good, not great. Staff was very good."

  • "The food was so flavorful! The portions are moderate, but with bread, an appetizer, entree, and desert, I left full but not hurting."

  • "Just returned from visiting all over Italy, and Al Tiramisu's food is as good or better than any we had there. The papperdelle, pesto, and risotto dishes are all outstanding, gnochi is good but not great. Wine is good but not many cheap options (we paid $55 for one of the cheaper bottles). Food is very well priced though- pasta dishes around $16, the risotto was $29 and worth it."

  • "Some out of town guests wanted to go to an authentic Italian restaurant with good homemade pasta yet small and cozy like Venice. This restaurant was just that. The service overall was good. Two complaints. 1. they sat us next to a very large party (22) and it was extremely loud and at times we had to shout over the table to hear one another. 2. we had taken our last bite of dessert and sipped the last drop of our tea when the check was delivered. We had our check returned by an arrogant young man who said, " I don't mean to be rude but many people are waiting for your table." Don't stack your reservations in a small restaurant if you have to ask someone to leave. I wish that wasn't my last memory of leaving the restaurant."

  • "Authentic italian food it was delicious! Service was also excellent, I barely noticed them. Not too extravagant inside but that's exactly what I was looking for. Restaurant focused on authentic italian cuisine and service =)"

  • "The Pasta was homemade and fresh. The Fish was how one finds it served in Italy. The service was friendly and helpful. The only down side was they would not give us 7:30 reservations on open table and at 7:30 on a summer Sunday night there were many empty tables. This restaurant is worth eating at, you will enjoy, especially if you like authentic Italian food."

  • "This was a great find for us. We really wanted a good authentic italian meal. It delivered. Our waiter was very helpful and efficient. My only complaint would be that the customer should be warned when ordering off the menu that the "special" veal chop was $35.00."

  • "Delicious food, very subdued and quaint atmosphere, and excellent wine selection. It might have been a slow night, though, because the place was almost too quiet and very empty. Would definitely recommend the calamari!"

  • "Al Tiramisu is known for its romantic, quiet ambiance and wonderfully authentic Italian cuisine. Chef Luigi did not disappoint. We celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary at a lovely table "with a view" (a mural of Portofino - or pick an Italian city on the Amalfi Coast). We decided on the tasting menu, in which Chef Luigi designs a 4 course meal starting with an appetizer platter with 5 small samples (roasted stuffed red pepper, tomato/mozz, scallop, etc). Then on to a pasta platter with 2 small samples. Fish (salmon), then venison for the meat dish. All cooked to perfection and beautifully presented. The wine list is excellent, and our waiter wonderfully attentive. We can't wait to go back."

  • "The "special" appetizers were fabulous, the batter on the fried zucchini flowers was just right not greasy. Figs with prosciutto was sweet and salty great texture. Our main course was Lobster with Linguini – the lobster was cooked to perfection – not chewy and the linguini was al dente just like it should be. This gem of a restaurant was highly recommended by our hotel concierge. Great find, will definitely return to this establishment."
