  • "This was our first visit and it was GREAT. Service was GREAT! Our server was Ella and she was very friendly. We ordered the lasagna and they were big portions and terrific. Couldn't eat it all and had the rest for lunch the next day. When you are inside, it's hard to imagine the restaurant is located at the end of a shopping strip. I would recommend everyone to stop by and check it out for yourself."

I took her there for our 1 year anniversary and this time I really savored the food. I paid attention to her as well, but I have to admit there were times I had to ask her to repeat herself because the food was so good I kind of drifted off."

We had a nice visit and a very good meal with timely service that allowed us to enjoy dinner and still get to the concert in a timely fashion. We'll be back."

  • "Came in late one evening and was very graciously greeted. There was a large party still eatting and more came in afterwards. No one, especially the staff, seemed inconvenienced by the late arrivals. No wonder, the food was excellent. Had the Lobster Raviolli which was excellently cooked and seasoned. The filling was ample and shrimp in the cream sauce nice sized. Their bread was also excellent. Will definitely return the next time I'm in town."

  • "My penne alla vodka was out of this world. However, I found my father and sister's red sauce to be extremely salty. He did not come close to finishing his meal. The calamari was a bit too salty as well. Our server was incredible. He was extremely polite, polished and knowledgable about the wine list. I will likely return."

  • "The food brings you back. The wine list is adequate but not spectacular beyond their Italian bins. However, the wine prices are in line with the wine selections. I had the seafood & linguine and it was outstanding. The challenge to this dish is the varying cooking times for scallops, mussels, and shrimp. Getting these right and the dish assembled and delivered to table takes care and coordination between kitchen and servers. Doing this for a large group (there were two parties of 10 or more there when we went) takes masterful orchestration and a willingness for everyone to help, including the owner. He treats everyone as special and his affection is not an affectation."

  • "As an Italian transplant from NJ, I have been searching for months (Oct 2013-March 2014) for a good Italian go-to restaurant. Finally I found one. They have generous portions, are reasonably priced and have a great wine list. My only complaint is that their tomato sauce is a bit sweet (I prefer a garlicky tomato sauce to a sweet one heavy on tomato paste). Everything we ordered was cooked perfectly and overall we were satisfied customers and will be returning."

Server asked if we liked it , we said no, she brought another plate of it, but it still was "old tasting" and not up to what we thought it should be. Two of the Three dinners were good, mine was not. Our server was very gracious and helpful, but took some time getting to us with the main meal. We probably won't go back."

  • "Went to celebrate my sister's birthday. I had three people in my party. I checked in at the stand and had no issue; also was the first time I have used Open table. We were seated and the waitress that was serving us that night was very friendly and knowledgeable on the food. We had a few questions and she was kind enough to answer them all. The restaurant itself was nicely decorated nicely. The atmosphere was rather relaxed and casual; there were other diners that were talking among themselves but not so loud that one could hear there conversations. The food was delicious and brought out promptly. They did did give my sister a nice desert and wished her a happy birthday."

In the Hampton Roads area, family/chef-owned italian restaurants only seperate themselves from each other with customer service and atmosphere - most are very similar in taste and presentation. Al Fresco is no different. I will say the bread sticks reminded me of those served by Pizza Hut. All of the pasta dishes were what we expected - nothing special. If you want a solid Italian dinner, it is a nice plae to go. Don't go to be floored with something new and exciting. If you treasure bread, I might suggest going somewhere else. The servers were very good, nice and present without hovering."

  • "This is a small family-owned restaurant that gets you away from your typical chain restaurants. Me and my wife went for our anniversary and enjoyed the quality of the experienced service staff. However I would recommend this more for a large group of people or just a casual friends or family (or even business) gathering rather than for something romantic."

We arrived at 5:30 exactly, but were not served our entree until 6:30 which left us only 40 minutes to eat, get our bill, pay and be on our way at 7:10 for a 7:30 concert. Waiting one hour for an entree is a little excessive."

  • "Al Fresco Italian Restaurant was one of my choices on a recent trip to Hampton VA, and on entering I felt like I was in a big city's Little Italy. I had in mind the Vitello Verbena (veal scallopini with proscuitto, capers and asparagus) so I asked for recommendations for a lighter appetizer, and my server recommended the Melanzane Rollatini (sliced eggplant stuffed with ricotta topped with tomato sauce). The appetizer was a good choice and my entree was excellent. Our reservation was for a Thursday night at 8:30pm and my colleague and I ended up talking business until after 10:15pm, well after all the diners left, but our server was very gracious. Definitely worth a visit, and they take reservations on OpenTable, which is always a plus!"
